For the second consecutive week, Ridder started the game with a turnover. On the fourth play of the Bearcats' first drive against USF, Ridder had a miscommunication with running back Charles McClelland. On a scramble play, Ridder pointed to McClelland to move to his left and get away from the Bulls' defense. But USF safety Mac Harris also saw Ridder point, and he picked off the pass. At one point in the middle of the second quarter, Ridder had 40 passing yards and two interceptions. "I'm concerned with the turnovers," Fickell said. "But I think we've got to do a better job as a staff to find some ways to give him some opportunities." Fickell added, "Sometimes his head is down and (he) played (his) butt off."

According to Fickell, there's always competition between Ridder and backup quarterback Ben Bryant for the starting spot. But in all likelihood, Ridder will remain the starter for the foreseeable future. The Bearcats will likely need Ridder's best to win the American Athletic Conference title this season. In three weeks, UC will travel to face Southern Methodist University and early Heisman Trophy candidate Shane Buechele. Seven days later, the Bearcats play No. 25 Memphis, the reigning AAC champions. A matchup against No. 11 UCF looms in November. With seven games left in the regular season, Ridder still can redefine his junior season. "He knows he can do better," Fickell said, "and he wants to do better." - Cincinnati Enquirer
