  09/28/20 - Luke AnthonyrSr/2024, Baylor, 6-1, 208 (DS#999 QB) + More +

SEPT 28 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Louisiana Tech graduate QB Luke Anthony accounted for six touchdowns after posting five touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown in a 66-38 win over Houston Baptist, becoming the fifth player in program history to account for at least six TDs in a single game. It was only the third time in program history that a LA Tech quarterback has passed for five touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown in a single game. The Dallas native threw four TD passes in the first half to become the first Bulldog QB to do so since Ryan Higgins in 2016 and became the seventh LA Tech quarterback to throw for five touchdowns in a single game.

Anthony threw three passing touchdowns of 40-plus yards against the Huskies with throws of 44, 43 and 41 yards. In his first career start for the Bulldogs, Anthony finished the day 17-of-30 for 314 yards. He has now passed for eight touchdowns in the first two games of the season which is the most by a Louisiana Tech QB in the Division I era of the program (since 1975). His eight passing touchdowns this season currently rank second in the nation. Anthony was also named to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 list of eight outstanding FBS quarterbacks in week four. - Conference USA Football

  09/28/20 - Trestan EbnerrSr/2022, Baylor, 5-11, 209 (DS#42 RB) + More +

Baylor senior running back Trestan Ebner enjoyed a big night as he scored four touchdowns while becoming the first player in school history to return two kicks for touchdowns in the Bears' 47-14 victory over Kansas on Saturday. He also became the first player in Big 12 history to score on a kick return, a catch and a run. "I'm just thankful that I was able to put my name in the Baylor record books, and I'm thankful for the chance to play with these great guys," Ebner said. "They try to give me the ball in multiple different ways. I'm just glad we could come out there and execute it." After running for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter, Ebner grabbed an 18-yard pass from Charlie Brewer for a second-quarter touchdown. His most memorable play was his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half as he broke away from several Kansas tacklers before sprinting down the right sideline for the score. In the fourth quarter, Ebner found a crease along the right sideline again when he returned a kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown following a Baylor safety. - Waco Tribune Herald

The Baylor senior became the first player in the 25-year history of the Big 12 to score three different types of touchdowns in a game, and the first FBS player since 1996 to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and multiple return touchdowns in a game. Ebner finished with 272 all-purpose yards in the Bears' 47-14 win over Kansas, the third-highest total in program history and the most in the nation this season. Ebner scored on a 1-yard run and an 18-yard pass from Charlie Brewer before he ran back the second-half kickoff 100 yards and returned a free kick 83 yards for a score after a safety. Ebner's four touchdowns in Baylor's opener were one off his total of five in 2019. - AP College Football

Trestan Ebner returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards before going 83 yards for another touchdown on a free kick after a safety, and Baylor gave new coach Dave Aranda a win in his long-awaited debut, beating Kansas 47-14 on Saturday night. Ebner also had a 1-yard TD run and an 18-yard scoring catch as the Bears won their latest opener in 56 years after non-conference games against Louisiana Tech and Houston were called off for COVID-19 reasons. Aranda, the defensive coordinator for LSU's 15-0 national championship team last season, took over after Matt Rhule was hired by the NFL's Carolina Panthers. It was the Big 12 opener for both teams. Baylor gave up a 79-yard touchdown drive on the first possession under Aranda, but the defense clamped down while the Bears scored 40 consecutive points to hand the Jayhawks their 50th consecutive loss in a true Big 12 road game. The school announced a crowd of 11,667, about 25% of McLane Stadium's capacity. The largest clusters of fans were in the student sections behind the Kansas bench. - AP College Football

Luke Anthony threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Louisiana Tech to a 66-38 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday night. Anthony threw touchdown passes of 44 and 43 yards Wayne Toussant in the first quarter. Isaiah Graham had two 15-yard TD receptions, the second a juggling catch that gave the Bulldogs (2-0) a 38-14 lead with about 3 minutes remaining before halftime. Anthony added a 41-yard TD pass to Jawaun Johnson and bulled into the end zone from the 1 to stretch the lead to 52-24 late in the third quarter. Anthony finished 17-of-30 passing for 340 yards. Bailey Zappe was 37 of 58 for 406 yards passing and threw five touchdown passes - each from inside the 6 - and had an interception to lead Houston Baptist (0-3).   09/08/20 - Jake BurtonrSr/2021, Baylor, 6-6, 303 (DS#30 OG) + More +

Burton was a two-year starting right tackle for the Bruins, and is eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer. Aranda quickly saw how eager Burton was to play after he arrived in Waco. "As soon as he could be around and visiting with us, he was," Aranda said. "I remember specifically, I was getting my second cup of coffee, and I see Jake trying to find where (offensive line coach Joe) Wickline's office is. I take him over there and he's meeting there at 6 a.m., and that was about every morning." Since getting cleared to practice, Burton has shown how much his football knowledge and experience can help a Baylor offensive line that's looking for major improvement after allowing a Big 12-high 38 sacks last season.

"We're in a practice, and the defense lines up with a certain look, and O-line-wise we need to make a call to fan out of protection," Aranda said. "Jake makes it and is taking control like he's been here the whole time. I was standing in the back with the rest of the offense as we're watching that, and guys are going 'How does he know to say that? He's already running it. Who told him that? "So it's a credit to him, it's a credit to Coach Wickline. When you watch Jake play, he's able to illustrate that he's been coached, he's been trained, and there's a maturity about him. I'm really excited about the prospects for our O-line." - Waco Tribune Herald

  09/07/20 - Gavin HolmesrSr/2023, Baylor, 5-10, 200 (DS#73 WR) + More +

After starring for the Bears for three seasons, Denzel Mims is gone to the NFL after the New York Jets selected him in the second round of the draft. But there's still considerable talent and depth on board as veterans like Tyquan Thornton, R.J. Sneed and Josh Fleeks will play more prominent roles. At 6-3 and 180 pounds, Thornton is a tall target with outstanding receiving skills, and is Baylor's top returning receiver after making 45 catches for 782 yards and five touchdowns last season. Sneed often proved his toughness over the middle as he made 42 catches for 437 yards and three touchdowns while Fleeks should become a bigger factor after making 25 catches for 262 yards and a score last season.

Senior receiver Jared Atkinson has size and speed while Gavin Holmes has enjoyed a tremendous preseason camp after missing most of the last two seasons with ACL knee injuries. "For those that have played sports, you realize it's not easy to come back from an injury like that," Brewer said. "And especially two back-to-back. That takes a lot of mental toughness to get through that, and he's done it day by day for the past two years and shows up with a positive mindset. He's had a fantastic fall camp too. He's a guy that is going to have a big impact this year." - Waco Tribune

  09/07/20 - Raleigh TexadarSr/2022, Baylor, 5-10, 191 (DS#63 CB) + More +

Though senior cornerback Raleigh Texada is the only returning starter in the secondary, Baylor's prospects aren't as dire as they might appear. Junior cornerback Kalon Barnes, a former state sprint champion at Silsbee, saw considerable time in a backup role as he made 22 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception. Sophomore cornerback Mark Milton played in all 14 games last season and has been impressive during camp. Texada's experience will be valuable after making 20 starts over the last two seasons, including all 14 games last year when he amassed 45 tackles and five pass breakups. "Raleigh gives us the ability to play some zone concepts," Aranda said. "I think press (coverage) is something that he's really attacked. I'm so encouraged just by his enthusiasm and his desire to learn something new and really improve. He's one of my favorite guys to watch, just his speed and excitement, his want and his ability to grow and learn is very impressive." - Waco Tribune

  09/04/20 - Trestan EbnerrSr/2022, Baylor, 5-11, 209 (DS#42 RB) + More +

Baylor completed its list of 10 players who will wear single digits this season as voted on by the team. On Tuesday, Baylor announced No. 4 safety Christian Morgan, No. 6 receiver Gavin Holmes, No. 8 safety-linebacker Jalen Pitre, and No. 9 receiver Tyquan Thornton. Last week, six players were awarded single digits: No. 0 receiver R.J. Sneed, No. 1 running back Trestan Ebner, No. 2 linebacker Terrel Bernard, No. 3 cornerback Raleigh Texada, No. 5 quarterback Charlie Brewer, and No. 7 running back John Lovett. Former Baylor coach Matt Rhule began the single-digit awards, and first-year coach Dave Aranda has continued the tradition after his players requested it. - Waco Tribune Herald

  09/02/20 - Jalen PitrerSr/2022, Baylor, 5-11, 195 (DS#1 SS) + More +

First-year Baylor coach Dave Aranda likes the versatility his defensive backs bring to the table. "The five DBs, there is an element of being positionless," Aranda said. "There are certain strengths. The ability to be kind of nameless and interchangeable in today's game allows for quite a bit of hidden successes, and we're looking for those in offenses that we face." Baylor's fifth position in the secondary is the "star" position, a hybrid safety-linebacker spot that features senior Jairon McVea and fourth-year junior Jalen Pitre. Both players have shown the ability to cover receivers and handle tackling duties. "Jairon has really been able to cover well in the slot and be able to do zone concepts that we want for him to execute as well as the man principles, the man coverages that are so dependent on his technique," Aranda said.

"He's covering the slot receiver, kind of their go-to guy. It's been really exciting to see McVea play the way he has." Pitre has been a fan favorite since he was the only player from the 2017 signing class who was recruited by former coach Art Briles that kept his commitment to Baylor after Briles was fired. After appearing in 15 games and starting nine during his first two seasons at Baylor, Pitre redshirted last year after playing in four games. "You've got Pitre who can bring in a blitzing aspect that can set edges against the run, that can cover as well," Aranda said. "So I think that combination of star athletes enables us to really be dynamic and really play into each other strengths." - Waco Tribune Herald

  09/02/20 - Siaki IkarJr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 347 (DS#8 DT) + More +

Who will replace Shelvin? Since preseason camp opened Aug. 17, Orgeron has been optimistic about LSU's depth at defensive tackle. Former starting defensive end Glen Logan has moved inside to tackle, and it's possible that he pushes for starting time. However, Siaki "Apu" Ika is more built like Shelvin. A powerful former nose tackle listed at 6-foot-3, 346 pounds, Ika shared Shelvin's struggle to keep his playing weight down, but he showed promise in 13 games last season with 17 tackles and 1½ tackles for loss. Orgeron has also repeatedly praised true freshmen Jacobian Guillory and Jaquelin Roy, both four-star recruits who were going to see plenty of playing time anyway. "I think with the defensive line, we have a lot of depth," Orgeron said when preseason camp opened. "We can rotate those guys." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/28/20 - William Bradley-KingrSr/2021, Baylor, 6-4, 252 (DS#24 DE) + More +

During his last two seasons at Arkansas State, William Bradley-King gained a reputation as a fierce pass rusher with a habit of unnerving quarterbacks. Now he'll have his sights set on chasing down Big 12 quarterbacks. Coming to Baylor as a graduate transfer, Bradley-King is expected to emerge as one of the most impactful new players in the Big 12 this fall. Surrounded by a lot of other skilled Baylor defenders, Bradley-King expects to raise his own bar. "I always maximize my potential and always get better," Bradley-King said. "That's where my focus is. I'm around a lot of freaks. Here I'm going to complement all the great players that we have."

The chance to play for first-year head coach Dave Aranda is another key reason Bradley-King decided to spend his final year of college eligibility at Baylor. During Aranda's four years as LSU's defensive coordinator, Bradley-King noticed how aggressively the Tigers' defensive ends pursued quarterbacks. He expects to play a similar role at Baylor. "I've always been a fan of LSU and their defensive ends," Bradley-King said. "I just feel like it was a dream come true to be able to play like that. Just talking to the (Baylor) coaches, and knowing the plan they had for us, how they were bringing in a new defensive scheme, I felt like it fit me well. I feel like it fit me way better than me playing a three-man front." - Waco Tribune

  08/26/20 - Jake BurtonrSr/2021, Baylor, 6-6, 303 (DS#30 OG) + More +

UCLA won't play football this fall, but some of its players might. Starting right tackle Jake Burton entered the transfer portal Tuesday with hopes of finding a new team that will compete in the coming months. "I was looking forward to finishing my college career with my Bruins teammates," Burton said in a tweet announcing his departure. "Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, that is not possible this year. After much thought, I have decided to enter the portal in hopes of gaining the opportunity to play football this Fall."

The most likely destination for Burton is expected to be a team in the Southeastern or Atlantic Coast conferences, which are forging ahead with plans to play despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that forced the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences to abandon their hopes of a fall season. The departure of Burton, a redshirt senior, means the Bruins must replace three of their starting offensive linemen from last season. Center Boss Tagaloa graduated and guard Christaphany Murray entered the transfer portal earlier this year. - Los Angeles Times
