New wide receiver Jacob Cowing and returning safety Christian Young will represent Arizona at Friday's Pac-12 Media Day in Los Angeles, the league announced Monday. Cowing, Young and coach Jedd Fisch will talk to the media at 10:45 a.m.; the news conference will be available to watch on Pac-12.com as well as on the Pac-12 Insider and the Pac-12 Now app. A 6-foot-3-inch junior from Houston, Young has 107 career tackles and two forced fumbles. Cowing, a transfer from UTEP, boasts a résumé unlike any receiver on the Wildcats' roster. He led all Conference USA freshmen in receiving yards as a freshman. His 2021 season was his best: He caught 69 passes for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns for Miners coach Dana Dimel, a former UA assistant. Cowing has been named an early-season candidate for both the Maxwell Award, given annually to the best player in college football; and the Biletnikoff Award, given to the best receiver. - Arizona Star News

  07/06/22 - *Scooby Wright IIIJr/2016, Arizona, 6-0, 239 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

Scooby Wright of the Birmingham Stallions said it best when he told me that his season of football in the new USFL felt like summer camp. "Just hanging with all my homies all day," he said. And for months and months. Or, as we say in Birmingham, munts and munts. USFL Season One was a wild and wacky experiment in sports entertainment. The league, all the teams and the TV rights are owned by Fox Sports, and so to save money the entire regular season was played in Birmingham. Players, coaches and support personnel lived in hotels or rental properties around town. All the games were played at Protective Stadium. Players ate lunch together, and then one of the guys was kicked off a team because he didn't want chicken salad for lunch. Who doesn't like chicken salad? It was all a little insane. And then the craziest part of it all is that it actually worked.

The final product? Pretty good. The championship game? There were multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter, dramatic story lines and game-winning heroes. It doesn't get much better than that. The Birmingham Stallions defeated the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 on national television on the Sunday night before Independence Day. Sounds like a new holiday tradition to me. "The Birmingham Stallions win the inaugural USFL championship, baby," Wright said during his post-game interview on the field. Giddy up. They used to call Birmingham the Football Capital of the South. I'd say that reputation still fits. By multiple degrees, the USFL was a huge win for Birmingham. It's worth celebrating. Best of all, the league is returning next year. It's not clear how many teams will be in Birmingham in 2023, but USFL Season Two is reportedly scheduled to begin in mid-April. - Birmingham News

A former Arizona Wildcat helped deliver a championship in the inaugural season of the revived USFL. With the Birmingham Stallions leading the Philadelphia Stars 26-23 with 3:03 left to play in the USFL championship game in Canton, Ohio on Sunday, former UA star linebacker and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Scooby Wright intercepted quarterback K.J. Costello's - who was substituting for the injured former Northern Arizona Lumberjack Case Cookus - pass and returned it for a touchdown, to extend Birmingham's lead and win the title.

Wright, who returned to the gridiron this season after becoming a mixed-martial artist and firefighter, joined the Stallions after stints in the XFL and AAF. "After playing in two failed spring leagues and finally having to play one all the way through, this means a lot," Wright said on the Fox broadcast after the game. "There's been a lot of uncertainty with football and stuff, and I'm just glad this day is here, allowing me to play for the people I love my teammates." Birmingham finished the season 11-1, with its lone loss against former Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin and the Houston Gamblers. - Arizona Star News

  06/17/22 - DJ WilliamsrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-10, 225 (DS#57 RB) + More +

The Arizona Wildcats have added another member to an already-crowded running back room, picking up a commitment from Florida State graduate transfer D.J. Williams. Williams announced his commitment via his Twitter page Tuesday afternoon. This will be the third stop for the 5-foot-10, 205-pound back out of Lake Placid, Florida. Williams was originally a four-star recruit and the No. 16 running back in the 2019 class.

He committed to Auburn and spent two seasons with the Tigers, rushing for 599 yards on 122 carries and scoring five touchdowns in 19 games. He also had 72 receiving yards on 12 catches. Williams ran for a career-high 130 yards against No. 2 LSU during the 2019 season. Williams transferred to FSU for the 2021 season, but was used sparingly. He appeared in six games, carrying the ball 10 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. - Arizona Star News

  06/10/22 - Jabar TriplettrSo/2025, Arizona, 6-0, 215 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Jabar Triplett, a former three-star recruit in the 2020 class, announced Wednesday that he's putting his name in the transfer portal. "Due to current situations, and after praying and talking with my family, a big decision was made," Triplett wrote on Twitter. "I'll be entering my name in the NCAA transfer portal." The ex-UA linebacker never appeared in a game in two seasons at Arizona due to multiple injuries. Triplett tore an Achilles tendon in the spring of 2020, causing him to miss the shortened six-game season. He suffered a knee injury in January 2021 and needed season-ending surgery. On June 3, Triplett posted a workout video at Arizona Stadium going through agility drills with a brace on his left knee. He has four years of eligibility remaining. - Arizona Star News

  05/31/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

In a play-action heavy UTEP attack, WR Jacob Cowing needed only 69 receptions to gain 1,354 yards and score seven times. He immediately becomes one of the most dangerous slot receivers in the Pac-12. Cowing was a highly touted wideout in the transfer portal. He played three seasons at UTEP, recording 141 catches for 2,595 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added 75 yards rushing and one touchdown in just four attempts. In his last season at UTEP, Cowing's 1,354 receiving yards ranked ninth in all of college football. He will have Washington State transfer quarterback Jayden de Laura throwing him the football. Cowing joins freshman WR Tetairoa McMillan, the No. 5 wideout in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.com. - ArizonaSports.com

  05/26/22 - Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Arizona's Sept. 3 game at San Diego State will start at 12:30 p.m. and air on CBS, the Aztecs announced on Wednesday morning. It'll be the first-ever game played at the Aztecs' new Snapdragon Stadium, which sits on the site of the old Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego's Mission Valley. SDSU's football program played the last two seasons in Carson, more than 100 miles away, while the new stadium was built. The 35,000-seat Snapdragon Stadium is half the size of the Aztecs' old home at Qualcomm. Expectations are higher this season for Arizona, which went 1-11 last season and winless in 2020. But a tough nonconference schedule could provide a hurdle for the Wildcats and their best-in-program-history freshman class. - Arizona Star News

For the fifth time in the past 10 years, no Arizona Wildcats were selected in the NFL draft, which concluded Saturday. That figure is easily the highest in the Pac-12. It was also the second time in the past three years that no UA players were picked. Last year, two Wildcats went with back-to-back selections in the sixth round - defensive tackle Roy Lopez (Houston Texans) and running back Gary Brightwell (New York Giants). Only one other Pac-12 school, Colorado, failed to have a player selected this year. UCLA led the league with six picks, starting with tight end Greg Dulcich, who went to the Denver Broncos in the third round. Arizona State and Washington tied for second with four selections apiece. ASU had its most picks since 2015 (also four). Oregon and Utah - who squared off in the Pac-12 Championship Game - each had only one player selected. But both were first-round picks (Kayvon Thibodeaux, Devin Lloyd). The Pac-12 had 25 players drafted, the fewest since the league expanded to 12 teams, per longtime league chronicler Jon Wilner. - Arizona Star News

  05/04/22 - Jalen JohnsonrJr/2024, Arizona, 6-2, 209 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Jalen Johnson is transferring, a presumed casualty of the Arizona Wildcats' sudden and impressive depth at wide receiver. In a lengthy social media post, Johnson - a rising junior from Corona, California - thanked former coaches Kevin Sumlin and Taylor Mazzone and praised God for giving him a chance in Tucson. Johnson played in nine games last season, catching four passes for 37 yards. He appeared in 10 games as a true freshman in 2019, catching seven balls for 79 yards and a score. He did not see the field during the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. - Arizona Star News
