  09/03/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Jayden de Laura threw four touchdown passes, three to fellow transfer Jacob Cowing, and Arizona beat San Diego State 38-20 on a sizzling Saturday to spoil the debut of Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs (0-1) waited two years for their new stadium to be built next to where 70,000-seat SDCCU Stadium once stood, and then were embarrassed by the Wildcats (1-0) on a 100-degree day. SDSU announced a sellout of 34,046. Many seats were empty at kickoff and the east stands, totally exposed to the sun, were mostly empty by the fourth quarter.

Arizona avenged a 38-14 loss to SDSU in its home opener last year during a 1-11 season. De Laura, who transferred from Washington State, completed 22 of 35 passes for 299 yards. He was intercepted once. Cowing, a transfer from UTEP, had eight catches for 152 yards. The Wildcats sacked transfer Braxton Burmeister on the first play from scrimmage, forced SDSU to punt and then scored the stadium's first points on Tyler Loop's 25-yard field goal. De Laura, the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year at Washington State last season, hit Cowing for on a 17-yard pass for a 10-0 lead and then found freshman Tetairoa McMillan on a 4-yarder to make it 17-3 midway through the second quarter. - Arizona/AP College Football

  08/21/22 - Tyler LooprSr/2025, Arizona, 5-11, 191 (DS#5 K) + More +

Tyler Loop didn't miss a kick last season. He went 12 for 12 on extra points and 12 for 12 on field goals. Loop didn't make every kick during spring practice, and he didn't handle it well. So dealing with failure became a primary focus during the offseason for the third-year Arizona Wildcat. "I was a little bit of a headcase in the spring," Loop said Thursday. "I'd miss a kick, and I'd trip out a little bit. That was something that he (special-teams coach Jordan Paopao) kept telling me: 'Hey, we gotta work on this. I know you haven't missed in a game, but this is still an area you gotta keep up.' "So this summer I spent a lot of time with our sports psychology team, working on seeing a kick objectively. Like, 'Hey, I made it or I missed it, but I got a next kick. I gotta go.' "One thing we talk about big time right now is, 'Play the next play.' Keeping that on the forefront of my mind has really helped." Expectations are high for Loop as he heads into his third season.

The kicking job is all his after he shared it with Lucas Havrisik last year. Loop made the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, among other preseason accolades. Loop knows that he's bound to miss a kick in a game at some point. How he approaches the next one will be the true test. "I was always super emotionally invested, played with a ton of passion growing up, and still do," Loop said. "Now it's all about, 'How do you keep that passion without letting it affect the next thing?' So that's what I've had to get a lot better at. We've seen big improvements there." - Arizona Star News

  08/14/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Asked whether he expected to touch the ball a certain number of times per game in his first season as an Arizona Wildcat, Jacob Cowing said exactly what you'd expect him to say: "Not at all. I'm a team-first guy. As long as us as a team are getting the job done and we get the win (that's) what matters to me. I don't really care about personal stats. I just want to get the win and turn this program around." Cowing's sincerity about winning games and turning UA football around can't be questioned. The other part, though? "He's lying to you," receivers coach Kevin Cummings said, laughing. "He wants the ball every play. He's a competitor that way." Cowing didn't come to Arizona to be a decoy, although he could be an effective one at times. He came, at least in part, because he knows Jedd Fisch can help elevate his game and boost his NFL draft stock. Just ask Stanley Berryhill III, Cowing's predecessor as a slot receiver and all-around weapon in Fisch's offense. Berryhill caught 83 passes for 744 yards last year, becoming just the sixth player in school history to have 80-plus receptions in a season.

Berryhill also had 19 rushes and 18 punt returns. All told, that's 120 touches, or 10 per game. Cowing is expected to be Arizona's primary punt returner. He's also in the mix to return kickoffs. Fisch wants to get him the ball as much as possible in as many ways as possible. The transfer from UTEP will line up in the slot, on the outside, maybe even in the backfield at times. He'll go deep, catch bubble screens and run fly sweeps. "There are not many limitations to his game," Cummings said. "He can go vertical. He can win man on man. And he's got the smarts and the savviness to adjust to some of that stuff in the slot, some of those zone coverages, slip defenders. "It's on us as a staff to put him in as many different spots as we can to use those skill sets. For him, he's just going out there playing, and wherever we line him up, he's done a great job of figuring out where he needs to be and how to run it." - Arizona Star News

  08/10/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Considering the other suitors for wide receiver Jacob Cowing, Arizona's ability to land the wide receiver might just have been the highlight of an already incredible offseason. The Maricopa native garnered offers from LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Oregon, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Louisville and Arizona State, among others, after deciding to leave UTEP following three seasons. He could've gone to "The Swamp," "Death Valley" or Autzen Stadium. He could've played in the "Air Raid" offense, heaven for a wide receiver. Instead, Cowing chose an Arizona program that's only won one game in the last two-plus years.

Proximity to home was key - though it wasn't the only factor. "I have a baby in the Chandler-Gilbert area, so I wanted to be closer to him and spend that time during my last few years of college football, and also my friends and family in the Chandler-Gilbert area as well," said Cowing, who will lead the Wildcats into their Sept. 3 season opener at San Diego State. "I wanted them to be a part of the last few years...U of A was also one of my dream schools growing up, so why not go out with a bang for these last few years of college football." - Arizona Star News

  08/09/22 - Jordan MorganrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-5, 311 (DS#2 OG) + More +

Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan answers questions during Tuesday's media day at the Davis Sports Center on campus. The Marana High School product is expected to anchor the Wildcats' offensive line this fall. Brennan Carroll, Arizona's offensive coordinator and O-line coach, put it bluntly: "We need him to be great." Carroll was talking about Jordan Morgan, a big, talented local product who has everything you could want in a tackle on this level or the next one. Expectations for Morgan this season are as massive as the player himself; he's listed at 6 feet 5 inches and 320 pounds.

Now all Morgan has to do is live up to them. Morgan has positioned himself to do just that. He's had an exceptional offseason in the weight room and strength-and-conditioning program. His body and mind are in a good place. That wasn't always the case last season. Morgan suffered a high-ankle sprain during training camp last year. He said in spring that it bothered him throughout and even after the season. "I came back a little hesitant," Morgan said this week. "My pass set was kind of messed up. I was opening up. I wasn't trying to apply a lot of pressure on it." - Arizona Star News

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Luke Wysong, New Mexico,...Wysong led the Lobos and all Mountain West freshmen in 2021 in receiving yards, catches, kickoff returns and punt returns, and could very well lead the way in 2022 as well. Wysong added around 15 pounds of muscle in the off-season and is still one of the fastest players in the league, starring in the 60-yard dash at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. - New Mexico Football

  08/01/22 - Christian YoungrSr/2023, Arizona, 6-1, 221 (DS#47 OLB) + More +

In its annual season-preview magazine, Athlon Sports ranked the Wildcats' defensive backfield as the third worst in the Pac-12. The members of the UA secondary don't see themselves that way. Nor should they. Start with the fact that Arizona ranked second in the conference in passing yards allowed last season. Then recall spring practice, when the secondary produced a bevy of interceptions under new defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen.

Fisch sees NFL-caliber talent throughout that unit, which includes Young, fellow safety Jaxen Turner and cornerbacks Christian Roland-Wallace and Treydan Stukes. Young and Roland-Wallace made the initial watch list for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. Young casually referred to the UA defensive backfield as "the best secondary in the Pac-12" during spring ball. That's probably a stretch. Opponents had a 25-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio against Arizona last year. But the Wildcats might be closer to first in the league than 10th. - Arizona Star News

  08/01/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Although he was one of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal, Jacob Cowing arrived in Tucson with relatively little fanfare. UA fans were swept up in the recruitment of top-50 prospect Tetairoa McMillan. The acquisition of quarterback Jayden de Laura also demanded big, bold headlines. But make no mistake: Cowing is at worst Arizona's second-most important offseason pickup, behind de Laura, and he'll make an instant impact for an offense desperate for playmakers. One of Arizona's two player representatives at Media Day, along with senior safety Christian Young, Cowing comes to L.A. as a preseason second-team All-Pac-12 selection.

He exploded at UTEP last year, catching 69 passes for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns. He chose Arizona for two primary reasons: the relationship he quickly built with Fisch and Tucson's proximity to the Chandler area, where Cowing's 2-year-old son, Chase, lives. Cowing attended Maricopa High School. He was a two-star recruit. Now he's on the verge of stardom. - Arizona Star News

  07/29/22 - Taylor UpshawrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-4, 246 (DS#25 DE) + More +

The departures of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo have left a hole in Michigan's defense. A huge one. The two defensive ends combined for 25 sacks, 28 1/2 tackles for loss and became a major problem for opposing quarterbacks. Hutchinson wound up being a Heisman Trophy finalist, while Ojabo emerged as an All-American and first-team all-Big Ten selection. Together, the two comprised the best edge-rushing duo in the country. But with both now gone, how will the Michigan defense go about replacing them? In spring, first-year coordinator Jesse Minter acknowledged the tough task ahead. He said it wouldn't be one or two players who make up the lost contribution. It's going to take multiple.

But who will they be? Taylor Upshaw and Mike Morris figure to be the front runners, along with Kris Jenkins, outside linebacker Jaylen Harrell and Braiden McGregor as a pass-rush specialist. Expect multiple players to see extensive playing time this fall, a departure from Hutchinson seeing the field on nearly every play of every game. Some players will specialize on first and second down (Morris, Upshaw), while others (Harrell, McGregor) could be brought in for third-and-long situations. It might be the biggest question mark facing Michigan this offseason, and one we really won't have an answer for until Week 1. - Ann Arbor News
