Fans who attended the Virginia Tech-North Carolina game certainly got their money's worth Saturday evening. The Hokies themselves actually got much, much more. In a game that took six overtimes and more than four hours to play, Virginia Tech finally put away the Tar Heels when third-team quarterback Quincy Patterson's two-point conversion run in the sixth overtime propelled the Hokies to a wild 43-41 victory in the longest game in ACC history. The victory enabled the Hokies (5-2, 2-2 ACC) to keep pace in the race for the ACC's Coastal Division crown and kept the Tar Heels (3-4, 2-2) from jumping to the top of the division.

"I'm just proud of those kids," Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente said. "It goes back to a couple of weeks ago (after a 45-10 loss to Duke), and we had to look ourselves in the mirror and talk about how we would handle tough situations. We were certainly in our fair share of them tonight. If they had made one more field goal or whatever, I would still feel the same way about our team. If it had gone another way, I still would've been up here talking about how proud I am of our guys' ability to battle." Both teams squandered opportunities to win in earlier overtime periods, as Virginia Tech kicker Brian Johnson missed game-winning attempts from 41 and 42 yards and North Carolina kicker Noah Ruggles missed from 35 yards and had a 44-yard attempt blocked. The game marked the debut of college football's new overtime rules, which now call for going for two points after the fourth overtime. In the fifth overtime, Virginia Tech had the ball first, but Patterson's pass to Damon Hazelton was broken up by the Tar Heels' Storm Duck, giving the Tar Heels an opportunity to win the game. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

The Temple defense forced three turnovers and recorded a 74-yard touchdown by safety Benny Walls during a 24-2 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Owls also generated 198 yards on the ground thanks in large part to Re'Mahn Davis, who had 29 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Temple (3-1) spoiled the return of former head coach Geoff Collins, who posted a 15-10 record over two years as Owls coach before agreeing to take the head coaching job at Georgia Tech in December 2018. Collins was replaced by former Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey, who is 3-1 in his first four games at Temple.

Walls recorded two turnovers in the second half, including a 74-yard fumble recovery score on the opening drive of the second half to swell the Owls lead to 21-0. In the fourth quarter, he would intercept James Graham's pass in the end zone to halt the final legitimate threat for a Georgia Tech comeback. Georgia Tech (1-3) got its only score on a third quarter safety on a tackle of Davis following a 1-yard loss in the end zone. - Temple/AP College Football

Anthony McFarland was already stuffed at the goal line once by Temple. With the Maryland running back needing inches again to put the Terps ahead, he should have known what was coming. Shaun Bradley wrapped up McFarland in the backfield for one more clutch hit for Temple's defense. Bradley flexed his muscles, pounded his chest and let loose toward Temple fans howling in delight. "It was the best feeling ever, man," Bradley said. Kenny Yeboah had put Temple ahead on a one-handed touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter, and the Owls used two stops at the goal line - Bradley's was one of them - to hold off No. 21 Maryland 20-17 on Saturday.

The Owls (2-0) defeated an unbeaten Maryland team for the second straight season and got coach Rod Carey off to a nice start in his first season on Temple's sideline. "Everything you're supposed to do to lose a game, we did," Carey said, "yet, we still executed well enough to overcome that." Minus awful special teams, the Owls were nearly flawless in the fourth quarter. Yeboah used his outstretched right hand to snag Anthony Russo's pass with 7:27 left in the game to put Temple ahead 20-15, but Maryland wasn't going down easy - and Temple's D pushed back. The game program cover boy, Bradley stopped McFarland on fourth-and-goal with 3:27 left to seemingly seal the win. But Temple got the ball back and Adam Barry shanked a punt from the end zone to give Maryland first-and-goal at the 10. - Temple Football
