During the summer prior to Jordan Magee's junior year at Dover High School in Dover, Delaware, the redshirt-sophomore linebacker tore his meniscus in offseason workouts and was unsure of what his playing status would be going forward. "That injury put a lot of stress on me," Magee said. "Thinking back on it now, I feel like it taught me a lot about resilience and how everytime that I get knocked down, to just get back up and just fight with my brothers." Magee established himself as a leader on the Owls' defense, tied for the team lead in tackles with 45, and tied for third on the team in sacks with three. Magee has demonstrated exemplary leadership both on and off the field and was named a single digit recipient by head coach Stan Drayton prior to the season. - Temple-News.com

Temple quarterback Quincy Patterson, a transfer from North Dakota State whom coach Stan Drayton calls a natural leader, has been making a name for himself early in camp. Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf sees Patterson as a player who can run well and has good size at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds. "You see a real team player," Langsdorf said. "Doing whatever he needs to do to help the team win...He just has a really good personality, very open and helpful to the guys. He's a team player all the way." Langsdorf added that a starter from last season, D'Wan Mathis, has improved his throwing accuracy. The quarterback competition will continue. - Philadelphia Inquirer

One of the recent 11 transfer additions at Temple is former Illinois running back Jakari Norwood, who had 27 carries for 120 rushing yards last season. He's still waiting for his paperwork to be cleared but could be joining the Owls any day, according to Drayton. "He's got versatility," Drayton said. "He can catch the ball out of the backfield. He's tough on contact, but he's got the fifth gear...He's a guy that can hit a home run, so something that we felt we needed in that group and I'm hoping that he can bring that." The running back room features returners Edward Saydee, who took the bulk of carries last season, Darvon Hubbard, and Trey Blair. Drayton mentioned that the halfbacks have improved since the spring, when they learned new blocking schemes. - Philadelphia Inquirer

  08/03/22 - Xach GillrSr/2023, Temple + More +

During Stan Drayton's first team meeting as Temple's coach, he noticed one player in particular who was sitting in the front row. "Not knowing his name, not knowing who he was," Drayton said, "I just saw this one individual staring at the back of my skull trying to grab onto everything that I was saying." It was senior nose guard Xach Gill, who hasn't played a live snap of football since he appeared Dec. 12, 2020, in a win over Miami. At the time, he played defensive tackle and special teams for North Carolina. Expectations are high for Gill in his first season taking the field at Temple, both as an anchor on the defensive line and a leader within the locker room. And there's added pressure as Temple's season opener kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at Duke, just 45 minutes from Gill's hometown.

In three seasons at North Carolina - he redshirted his freshman year - Gill appeared in 25 games and offered defensive line depth. He made 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, recorded two sacks, and had one fumble recovery. He was recruited by former Temple coach Rod Carey's staff and committed to the Owls in January 2021. During winter workouts he suffered an Achilles injury that sidelined him for the year. Gill was officially cleared to play near the end of last season and was "full go" for the start of spring practices. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Jaylen Lewis isn't lacking confidence. The freshman defensive back at the University of Arkansas plans to be a player fans will have etched in their memories before he leaves campus. "I bring a swagger, a toughness," Lewis said last week. "Maybe it's something Arkansas ain't never seen before. The way I play, the way I move, the way I talk, it's different between anybody else that came through Arkansas. "No disrespect on anybody. No disrespect on Mo[ntaric] Brown, Joe Foucha, Greg Brooks, [Jalen] Catalon, Simeon Blair, all them guys."

Lewis and his friend Anthony Brown, a fellow west Tennessee defensive back, joined the Razorback secondary as early enrollees in the spring. The 6-0, 180-pound Lewis repped at cornerback and nickel back and he could start the season at the No. 2 nickel in the diverse and multi-positional secondary directed by coordinator Barry Odom and corners coach Dominique Bowman that features returning starters in the safeties Blair and Catalon, nickel Myles Slusher as well as corners LaDarrius Bishop and Hudson Clark. "Right now, I'm hopefully going to play," Lewis said. "I'm on the second spot on the depth chart so right now just praying and continuing to work and whatever happens just happens." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Temple has set itself up for an intriguing preseason quarterback competition. Quincy Patterson committed to the Owls on May 18, arriving at what he says will be his last stop with two years of eligibility remaining. His final two choices were Temple and Troy. "I probably talked to 40 schools and I just told them all the same thing," Patterson told The Inquirer. "They're all like, 'What do you want?' I said, 'I just want a chance to compete." First-year coach Stan Drayton said during spring practice that Temple could look to the transfer portal to add some competition at quarterback. Patterson will duke it out with returning starter D'Wan Mathis, who transferred from Georgia for the starting job in December 2020. Patterson played in 11 games over three seasons at Virginia Tech (2018-20). He left feeling as if there wasn't much more he could do to sniff a starting spot in Blacksburg, Va., so he transferred to North Dakota State in December 2020.

The 6-foot-3, 242-pound quarterback went 7-0 as a starter in his lone season before suffering an injury to the AC joint in his throwing shoulder. Patterson only saw the field in run packages thereafter, as backup Cam Miller took over duties under center. Miller led the Bison to an FCS national championship, leaving Patterson feeling some deja vĂș. He didn't see a path to a legitimate quarterback competition. There was plenty of open dialogue about the situation, but Patterson understood that North Dakota State was unlikely to bench its championship quarterback. The day after Patterson entered the transfer portal for a second time on May 10, he got a call from Temple's wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Jafar Williams, who held a similar position while they were both at Virginia Tech. - Philadelphia Inquirer
