This wasn't how graduate student Dan Archibong envisioned this year at Temple, a season of losing. Temple has regularly lost games and players to injury and to COVID-19 protocols. Through seven games for the 1-6 Owls, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle is one of five Temple players to start all seven games. The others are defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh, linebacker William Kwenkeu, receiver Branden Mack, and center C.J. Perez. Mack won't play Saturday in an American Athletic Conference game against No. 7 Cincinnati after suffering a thumb injury that will require surgery. So Temple has a small group of regulars who have made it through this strange season. In an added twist, Archibong got in on a few plays at tight end Saturday during a 28-3 loss to East Carolina.

"Showing that versatility is always good, especially for the next level," Archibong said after the game. In this lost season, Archibong has at least delivered a sufficient amount of tape for NFL scouts. No doubt they will look at him playing a second position for a team going nowhere as a positive, still fighting amid this frustration season. Archibong's stats aren't eye-popping. He has 22 tackles, including 3 1/2 for losses. and two sacks. He also has a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Yet he often occupies multiple blockers. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

For the third time in two months, someone who was counted on to play an integral role for the Washington State defense has opted to enter the NCAA's transfer portal. According to Rivals.com, Cougars senior "edge" Will Rodgers III, a 19-game starter the last two seasons and a starter in the team's season opener two weeks ago, entered the portal on Monday. Rodgers hasn't confirmed the news personally, but one day after WSU's 43-29 loss to No. 11 Oregon at Martin Stadium, the defensive lineman posted a tweet with a peace sign emoji and nothing else. Though Rodgers got a starting nod in the opener, the Cougars started Ron Stone Jr. at the "edge" position in the Oregon game. WSU rotates its defensive linemen frequently, so Rodgers still saw playing time, though the senior left the field for the injury tent in the fourth quarter and eventually retreated to the locker room. Rodgers had two assisted tackles in the opener, but none in WSU's most recent game. - Spokesman-Review

Temple's starting tight end from last season, Kenny Yeboah, transferred to Ole Miss, where he has played well with 15 receptions for 355 yards and four touchdowns. The Owls got an impressive performance from his replacement, redshirt sophomore David Martin-Robinson. Known as DMR, the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder had five receptions for 72 yards against Navy. Last year in 13 games, Martin-Robinson had five receptions for 64 yards. "DMR played his best game since he's been at Temple and he's a dynamic dude," Carey said. "I know, Kenny's down there at Ole Miss doing good things and he's a good player too. But DMR, he had five catches for 70- some yards and blocked [well]... He's a really good player." - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Quincy Patterson II came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes and run for another score, leading No. 20 Virginia Tech to a 45-24 victory over NC State on Saturday night. Despite playing without 23 players and four coaches because of coronavirus issues and injuries - including starting quarterback Hendon Hooker - the Hokies (1-0, 1-0 ACC) started quickly in a season opener delayed two weeks because of two COVID-related postponements. Virginia Tech took advantage of an NC State defense missing three starters who were out with injuries,by speeding to a 17-0 lead.

Patterson, the Hokies' No. 3 quarterback, entered the game in the second quarter after starter Braxton Burmeister left with a hand injury. Patterson threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Tayvion Robinson and 16 yards to James Mitchell on the Hokies' final two possessions of the first half. He also scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Khalil Herbert ran for 104 yards and a score for Virginia Tech, which rushed for 315 yards. Devin Leary threw for 165 yards and a score for the Wolfpack (1-1, 1-1). - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

  07/29/20 - RaVon BonnerSr/2022, Temple + More +

Cornerback Caleb Farley says he will not play for Virginia Tech this season because of health concerns and will focus instead on preparing for the 2021 NFL draft. The redshirt junior from Hickory, North Carolina made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, joining Illinois running back Ra'Von Bonner and others in choosing not to play. Bonner, who the school indicated was sitting out for personal reasons, told the Chicago Tribune that seeing teammates test positive for COVID-19 during team workout this summer made him rethink the situation. Bonner's decision is supported by teammates and coach Lovie Smith. - AP College Football

The American Athletic Conference had 17 players selected from its member schools during last week's NFL draft. It was the conference's second highest total in its seven-year history, falling just short of 2018?s record mark of 18 selections. That was the top draft haul among all Group of Five conferences for the sixth straight year. The Mountain West and Conference USA each had 10 draftees in this year's draft.

The AAC has actually been closer to the Big 12 than it has been with other "fellow" G5 schools in terms of recent draft pick totals. Outside of the 2019 draft, where the Big 12 had 26 players taken and the AAC only had 11, the two conferences have had very similar totals in all other drafts since 2017: This year was 21-17 in the Big 12?s favor, 2018 was 20-18 in the Big 12?s favor and the AAC actually had the better total in 2017 (15-14). - Dallas Morning News

Temple center Matt Hennessy was ready to have an in-person interview with the Eagles leading up to the NFL draft when the coronavirus pandemic shut down everything. His scheduled visit was March 13. Temple center Matt Hennessy works equally hard at football and academics. The NFL is next. "I was in Philadelphia and was going to go down to the complex that day and visit with everybody but wasn't able to due to the circumstances," Hennessy said last week by phone. Hennessy eventually had the meeting with the Eagles via Zoom. "I thought the meeting went well, and of course I'd be thrilled to go there," he said. In truth, he would be thrilled to go to any of the 32 NFL teams.

Hennessy, who earned his degree in finance in December, was a redshirt junior, but bypassed his final season at Temple. Since then, he played in the Senior Bowl and participated in the NFL scouting combine, where the 6-foot-4, 307-pound Hennessy ran a 5.18 40-yard dash and bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times. He has been at home during the pre-draft process in Rockland County, New York, about 20 minutes from Manhattan. "We're in New York in one of the hotter [coronavirus] zones, but I'm just staying in the house and staying away," he said. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Video chatting with draft prospects is nothing new for NFL teams. It once was part of a process that included having a maximum of 30 prospects visit team facilities, attending college pro days, and staging individual workouts. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, however, virtual face-to-face conversations are now the only kind the league will permit as clubs do their homework for the April 23-25 draft. To give a sense of how much meeting with prospects matters, the Bills drafted three of the 30 who reportedly visited their facility last year: defensive tackle Ed Oliver, tight end Dawson Knox, and linebacker Vosean Joseph. The sessions generally cover the same ground as they did before the health crisis. Player-personnel types and coaches seek to get to know as much as they can about the prospects, personally and football-wise.

Position coaches gauge their football acumen by showing them diagrams of plays, which can be tricky in a video-conferencing environment where imaging is reversed, and discuss schemes. "It's one thing when you get on with somebody from the front office who wants to talk background and stuff, that's pretty easy," Temple center Matt Hennessy told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's more challenging when you get on with a coach who wants to talk scheme as well, because then they have to pull up the whiteboard for FaceTime...Things will be flipped through the camera. "Communication becomes a little more difficult. I guess overall, it's not too much different from doing it in person, there's just that barrier. I'm in my living room and the coach is at his house, too, so it seems like a casual setting, but at the same time, it's still a job interview." - Buffalo News

Temple center Matt Hennessy expected to meet with a number of NFL teams in preparation for next month's entry draft. What Hennessy didn't foresee was that those visits would take place in his mother's living room in Bardonia, N.Y., with Hennessy staring into his laptop's camera. The league has shut down all team facilities because of the coronavirus pandemic, and has forbidden teams from holding their usual 30 prospect visits, which usually are supplemented by visits from local prospects who don't count toward the 30. Hennessy had planned to meet with Howie Roseman, Doug Pederson and the Eagles as a local prospect. Now he's a virtual prospect instead. As is the case with hundreds of other draft hopefuls nationwide. Teams, agents and prospects are worried about more than just the optics of taking part in such an exercise in a time of crisis. Teams are working with less information on prospects than in recent memory. Evaluators always say they base their decisions mostly on a prospect's game film. This year, that might be more true than at any time in the past few decades.

"It's so far less than ideal, I can't tell you," said agent Brett Tessler, who is based in South Florida, and whose clients include a lot of self-made players who weren't high picks. Will less-well-known prospects suffer from this truncated process? "It's your non-combine, diamond-in-the-rough type guy who's really going to get screwed the most," Tessler said. "I'm in my living room, and the coach is at his house, too, so it seems like a casual setting. But at the same time, it's still a job interview." Another agent, who didn't want to be quoted by name in the wake of Goodell's dictum, said he had spoken to a number of general managers and personnel people on this issue. "They should not have the draft," the agent said. "Nobody wants the draft to go on in four weeks. Nobody is prepared." - Philadelphia Inquirer

  03/16/20 - Zack MesdayrSr/2020, Temple + More +

Temple defensive end Zack Mesday could be the longest of long shots, but he refuses to give up, working out twice a day to chase his professional football dream. He certainly isn't like most prospects who have had their entire college tuition paid for them. The first thing he would do if he signed a professional contract? "It would help me pay off my student loans," he said. Mesday, who will earn his master's degree from Temple in May, just completed his last season of eligibility in the fall. It was quite an end to a career that certainly had a bleak beginning. He attended prep school for a year, walked on at Temple, had two ACL surgeries on his right knee in each of the first two years, changed his position from fullback, finally earned a scholarship in his fifth year and was a key contributor at defensive end last season, his sixth at Temple.

Now he was hoping to catch the eye of NFL personnel at pro days, except the coronavirus changed all of that. Mesday has been making himself bigger, stronger and faster, but he took a moment to display his frustration on Twitter last Thursday when it was announced that Temple's pro day has been postponed because of the virus. I understand the severity of the situation & see the bigger picture when it comes to public safety. With that being said, players like myself rely on Pro Day to make a push at the NFL. Hope this is resolved soon, because God knows what I've been through to make it to this point. - Philadelphia Inquirer

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Matt Hennessy, C, Temple,...Once the 2019 season ended, Hennessy had been a three-year starter (35 starts in the past three seasons), one of three finalists for the Rimington Trophy (given to the best center in college football), an All-American, and earned his bachelor's degree in finance. Immediately following the team's Military Bowl game, he announced that he was going to forego his final season of eligibility and prepare for the 2020 NFL Draft. - Temple Football

2019 ALL-PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): OL Michael Niese, Dayton,...Redshirt senior center Tim Roell and senior guard Michael Niese were the Flyer linemen named to the first team. The Dayton offense is ranked first in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in scoring offense (42.5 points a game) and red-zone offense (94.5% efficiency). That starts up front, and four of UD's offensive linemen were named All-PFL. (Two on the first team, and another two on the second team.). - Dayton Football
