  08/06/21 - C.J. PerezrSr/2022, Temple + More +

Temple is projected to finish 10th in the American Athletic Conference's football preseason rankings, two spots below the team's predicted finish from a year ago. The Owls finished second to last in the conference with a 1-6 record last year, playing an abbreviated season and the fewest total games of any team in the conference. Their 46 points in this year's preseason poll are their fewest since they joined the conference in 2013. Cincinnati was appointed the early favorite to win the AAC title thanks to 22 first-place votes from select media members. Last season's conference championship was the first for the Bearcats (9-1l, 6-0) since they joined the AAC. They were led by quarterback Desmond Ridder, the conference's 2020 offensive player of the year.

Central Florida, SMU, Houston, and Memphis round out the top five projected finishers among the conference's 11 member institutions. The conference's preseason favorite has ended up winning the league title twice since its inception in 2013, Cincinnati tying for the title in 2014 and UCF winning it in 2018. Temple graduate center C.J. Perez received individual recognition, being named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the nation's best center. This is the second consecutive year he's been named to the list. The only other Owl named to a similar list is Re-al Mitchell. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

  05/06/21 - C.J. PerezrSr/2022, Temple + More +

Temple center C.J. Perez has taken quite a journey in college football, and because of the NCAA's ruling that last season didn't count on a player's eligibility, he has gotten one final chance to prolong his playing career. Many colleges will have older players in their programs this year with many opting for a sixth season because of the effects of the coronavirus. There are some even eligible for a seventh. Perez is at his third school but finishing up yet another degree. Temple has seven players who are entering their sixth college season. Four of them have spent all their time with the Owls: safety Amir Tyler, receiver Randle Jones, linebacker William Kwenkeu, and cornerback Freddie Johnson. Perez is among three others who started at another school and are now in their sixth season. The others are defensive end Manny Walker, who began his career at Wake Forest, and offensive lineman Michael Niese (Dayton). - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Sanders had eight catches for 111 yards this season and nearly matched those totals Saturday. He caught seven balls from quarterback Jeff Sims for 105 yards, four of them for first downs, to set career highs for both categories. Against Duke last week, the junior caught his first touchdown pass. Collins was delighted with Sanders' success, extolling his work ethic and competitiveness. "And the cool thing is, whether he had had seven catches for 105 yards or he had had two catches for 20 yards, Adonicas Sanders would have still worked and ran his routes and blocked at a high level, regardless of getting the rock or not," Collins said. "And it was just one of those nights that he got it." Sanders became the fifth Tech player to lead the team or tie for most receptions in a game this season, after Gibbs, Brown, Jalen Camp and Malachi Carter. "He works hard throughout the week, every day, all day," Sims said of Sanders. "He just came and showed what he can do on the field." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  12/07/20 - RaVon BonnerSr/2022, Temple + More +

Former Sycamore High School football standout Ra'Von Bonner, who opted out of the 2020 season at Illinois, has committed to play for the Temple Owls. "I committed to Temple," Bonner said by text Monday morning. "I'll be playing my fifth year there." The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Bonner cited "having people that I trust" as the key reason he was drawn to Temple. He played three seasons at Illinois before opting out of the current season over the summer. Bonner has his degree from Illinois and was on scholarship this past fall despite opting out of the 2020 season with coronavirus concerns back in July. That seemingly put him out of favor at Illinois and Bonner entered the NCAA transfer portal in early November. - Cincinnati.com

Florida redshirt sophomore running back Iverson Clement has entered the transfer portal. Clement, a four-star recruit from Mount Holly, N.J., rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries in three years with the Gators. He's appeared in five games this season, carrying the ball five times for 29 yards. He joins safety Quincy Lenton in the portal from UF. Lenton put his name in the portal last month and did not play for the Gators in 2020. Clement played running back in all three seasons at UF, but lined up at another position as an early enrollee in 2018. Due to injures that spring, he moved to safety. Clement also played on special teams. - Gainesville Sun

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente announced that backup quarterback Quincy Patterson has entered the transfer portal. The only other player to enter the transfer portal during the off week was receiver Darryle Simmons. Fuente attributed the timing of Patterson's decision - Tech has two games left to go in the regular season - to a hand injury he suffered against Pittsburgh. Patterson couldn't grip a football last week and likely wouldn't have been available to play this week against Clemson.

While Fuente normally doesn't say much about players leaving the program, he went out of his way to praise Patterson on Monday before taking any questions. "I just want to publicly thank Quincy for his time here," Fuente said. "Just a fantastic young man. He played a vital role in our football team. Quincy knows how I feel about him and his folks. We stand ready to help him in anyway we can moving forward. I'm sure when the news hits his phone will be blowing up with a lot of people trying to find out about him and our phones will be blowing up too. We'll have nothing but great things to say about him moving forward. I look forward to watching him play and watching him get on the field on a more consistent basis." - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech backup quarterback Quincy Patterson has decided to transfer. Coach Justin Fuente made the announcement Monday, shortly before Patterson confirmed his decision in a Twitter post. "Through thought, prayer and countless discussions with my parents and other important people in my life, I felt it was in my best interest to enter my name in the transfer portal," Patterson said in the tweet. "Despite the weird timing, my decision wasn’t made hastily." Fuente said he and Patterson have had numerous conversations with the redshirt sophomore about his future. "I just want to publicly thank Quincy for his time here. Just a fantastic young man," Fuente said Monday. "He played a vital role in our football team. Quincy knows how I feel about him and his folks. We stand ready to help him in any way we can moving forward." He said Patterson wants a chance to play more, and is certain he will have numerous suitors. - AP College Football

This wasn't how graduate student Dan Archibong envisioned this year at Temple, a season of losing. Temple has regularly lost games and players to injury and to COVID-19 protocols. Through seven games for the 1-6 Owls, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle is one of five Temple players to start all seven games. The others are defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh, linebacker William Kwenkeu, receiver Branden Mack, and center C.J. Perez. Mack won't play Saturday in an American Athletic Conference game against No. 7 Cincinnati after suffering a thumb injury that will require surgery. So Temple has a small group of regulars who have made it through this strange season. In an added twist, Archibong got in on a few plays at tight end Saturday during a 28-3 loss to East Carolina.

"Showing that versatility is always good, especially for the next level," Archibong said after the game. In this lost season, Archibong has at least delivered a sufficient amount of tape for NFL scouts. No doubt they will look at him playing a second position for a team going nowhere as a positive, still fighting amid this frustration season. Archibong's stats aren't eye-popping. He has 22 tackles, including 3 1/2 for losses. and two sacks. He also has a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Yet he often occupies multiple blockers. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

For the third time in two months, someone who was counted on to play an integral role for the Washington State defense has opted to enter the NCAA's transfer portal. According to Rivals.com, Cougars senior "edge" Will Rodgers III, a 19-game starter the last two seasons and a starter in the team's season opener two weeks ago, entered the portal on Monday. Rodgers hasn't confirmed the news personally, but one day after WSU's 43-29 loss to No. 11 Oregon at Martin Stadium, the defensive lineman posted a tweet with a peace sign emoji and nothing else. Though Rodgers got a starting nod in the opener, the Cougars started Ron Stone Jr. at the "edge" position in the Oregon game. WSU rotates its defensive linemen frequently, so Rodgers still saw playing time, though the senior left the field for the injury tent in the fourth quarter and eventually retreated to the locker room. Rodgers had two assisted tackles in the opener, but none in WSU's most recent game. - Spokesman-Review

Temple's starting tight end from last season, Kenny Yeboah, transferred to Ole Miss, where he has played well with 15 receptions for 355 yards and four touchdowns. The Owls got an impressive performance from his replacement, redshirt sophomore David Martin-Robinson. Known as DMR, the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder had five receptions for 72 yards against Navy. Last year in 13 games, Martin-Robinson had five receptions for 64 yards. "DMR played his best game since he's been at Temple and he's a dynamic dude," Carey said. "I know, Kenny's down there at Ole Miss doing good things and he's a good player too. But DMR, he had five catches for 70- some yards and blocked [well]... He's a really good player." - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Quincy Patterson II came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes and run for another score, leading No. 20 Virginia Tech to a 45-24 victory over NC State on Saturday night. Despite playing without 23 players and four coaches because of coronavirus issues and injuries - including starting quarterback Hendon Hooker - the Hokies (1-0, 1-0 ACC) started quickly in a season opener delayed two weeks because of two COVID-related postponements. Virginia Tech took advantage of an NC State defense missing three starters who were out with injuries,by speeding to a 17-0 lead.

Patterson, the Hokies' No. 3 quarterback, entered the game in the second quarter after starter Braxton Burmeister left with a hand injury. Patterson threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Tayvion Robinson and 16 yards to James Mitchell on the Hokies' final two possessions of the first half. He also scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Khalil Herbert ran for 104 yards and a score for Virginia Tech, which rushed for 315 yards. Devin Leary threw for 165 yards and a score for the Wolfpack (1-1, 1-1). - Virginia Tech/AP College Football
