Spencer Rattler brings a substantial amount of publicity to South Carolina's starting quarterback position this season, and the Gamecocks are hoping the talent that never left him throughout last season's benching at Oklahoma has come with him. It certainly seemed to show itself in the spring game, one glimpse at a time, as neither he nor the coaches needed to display everything in a glorified scrimmage. "We'll build this offense around what we do best, but Spencer is certainly a guy that one, has played a lot of football, and has a lot more experience than those other quarterbacks do, and two, he has a unique skillset," coach Shane Beamer said in the spring. "He has great arm talent but he's athletic enough that he can run around as well." Glowing words.

The same kind of illumination, if different terminology, that surrounded Luke Doty. And Ryan Hilinksi. And Brandon McIlwain. And Connor Mitch. Rattler brings skill, poise and presence to the pocket, but the Gamecocks are hoping that square one is stabilized before imagining what he can build on top of it. That means Rattler stays under center for the entire season, instead of handing his ticket to the caretaker of the USC QB Merry-Go-Round. Since 2015, the Gamecocks have had one stretch where they could rely on the same man at quarterback. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina has announced the contingent it will bring to SEC media days next week in Atlanta. Head coach Shane Beamer will be accompanied by receiver Dakereon Joyner, offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn and defensive lineman Zacch Pickens. The Gamecocks will begin their media rotations at 1 p.m. on July 19. Joyner finished last year as the hero of South Carolina's 38-21 romp of North Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

The North Charleston product completed all nine of his passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 64 yards rushing on 10 carries. "What I say to other people: Never give up on your dreams," Joyner said after his performance netted him bowl MVP honors. "If you've ever got something out there that you want to get, keep going. Never give up. Adversity is going to come, but it's how you overcome it." - Rock Hill Herald

Spencer Rattler wanted a fresh start when he decided to enter the NCAA's transfer portal after spending three seasons at Oklahoma. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback said he found that destination when he moved to South Carolina. "It's a great opportunity to get a fresh start with a great team," Rattler said while attending the Manning Passing Academy held at Nicholls State on Friday. "A lot of people don't realize how many weapons we have. I'm excited to get the ball into those guys hands and try to get them farther." Rattler played a major role in Oklahoma's success in recent seasons.

He played in 23 games over three seasons at Oklahoma, posting a 15-2 record in those starts. He completed 70.1% of his passes (361-for-515) for 4,595 yards with 40 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed 127 times for 260 yards. Rattler helped guide the Sooners to the 2020 Big 12 Championship in this redshirt freshman season. He was among the Heisman Trophy favorites heading into 2021 but was benched in the middle of the season. Rattler said it was tough to leave Oklahoma, but he believes it was the right move. "The biggest thing I learned from my time at Oklahoma was fighting through adversity," Rattler said. "Playing quarterback is always going to put you through adversity. We had a lot of success at Oklahoma. We won a lot of games and conference championships. I had a great time there, but it was time to move on and help out someone new." - Daily Oklahoman

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said on Tuesday at the SEC coaches meetings that he found some NIL deals since committing to the Gamecocks, but none of that was agreed upon before he announced his commitment - including quarterback Spencer Rattler. "From our end, none," Beamer said, via Emerson. "Now I know he's worked out some deals since he got to South Carolina, and good for him. But on the front end, nothing." Rattler began his career at Oklahoma, and he turned into a Heisman contender following a strong 2020 season. But Rattler was disappointed with the Sooners and was eventually benched in favor of Caleb Williams, then entered the portal. Rattler played under Beamer before, so the two had a prior relationship when the quarterback hit the portal. - The State

South Carolina revealed its first three kickoff times for the 2022 football season on May 26. The Gamecocks will host Georgia State at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3; start at noon on Sept. 10 at Arkansas; and kick off at noon on Sept. 17 when defending national champion Georgia comes to Williams-Brice Stadium. The Georgia State game will be on ESPN Plus/SEC Network Plus. Arkansas and Georgia will each be on ESPN.

The rest of the season's kickoffs will be announced 12 days before each game. It will be the first meeting between the Gamecocks and Georgia State, the Panthers starting their program in 2010 under the leadership of longtime SEC head coach Bill Curry. Familiarity dots the matchup as the Panthers are now led by Shawn Elliott, the Gamecocks' former offensive line coach and interim head coach for the final six games of the 2015 season, after Steve Spurrier quit. - The Post and Courier

Quarterback Todd Ellis' passing numbers for the Gamecocks rank among the best in program history. If all goes according to plan, though, they might just be touched in 2022. With the import of former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, the University of South Carolina football team arguably boasts its biggest-armed passer since Ellis patrolled the huddle at Williams-Brice Stadium in the late 1980s. But that certainly doesn't bother Ellis, who's spent the better part of 30 years as the radio voice of USC football and was celebrated Monday for his 2020 induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. “You don't want to step in there early and say, ‘By the way, I'm Todd Ellis, the leading passer all-time and the voice of the Gamecocks. - Rock Hill Herald

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here ares On3.com ratings - No. 1. Spencer Rattler, South Carolina (from Oklahoma). The easiest layup among the 11 transfers, as Rattler cemented his hold on the Gamecocks' starting job the second he arrived in Columbia. The preseason Heisman Trophy favorite a year ago, Rattler could make South Carolina history with a big 2022 season - becoming the school's first All-SEC quarterback ever. The focus this summer is for Rattler to continue to grow comfortable in Marcus Satterfield's offense, building rapport with a new group of wideouts and tight ends. - On3.com

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings. No. 7 - Robby Ashford, Auburn (from Oregon). The former two-sport star from Mobile (Ala.) had a nice A-Day showing playing behind an iffy Tigers' offensive line, emerging as a potential X-factor in the battle with incumbent TJ Finley and fellow transfer Zach Calzada. Ashford is the best athlete in the room, and could totally win AU's job since the Tigers lack real explosiveness at the skill positions. How well Ashford continues to improve operating Harsin's offense will go a long way in determining where he sits in the Tigers' pecking order though. - On3.com

South Carolina's NFL Draft history is semi-limited compared with some of its Southeastern Conference counterparts, but the 2022 season may be a major step toward changing that. Quarterback Spencer Rattler, cornerback Cam Smith and wide back Jaheim Bell could all conceivably be in play as first-round selections should they live up to their respective preseason hype. And while there's still a season to be played, the added attention on those in Columbia isn't something the Gamecocks are shying away from. "There's no doubt when high school recruits are watching the NFL Draft and they see players from your school getting drafted, that's a great thing," head coach Shane Beamer said ahead of a Gamecock Club event in Anderson on Tuesday.

South Carolina hasn't ever been an NFL factory in the way programs like Alabama, Georgia and Florida have been over the past 20 years, but USC isn't devoid of recent draft history by any stretch. The Gamecocks have had at least one player selected in the first round in three of the past five drafts. South Carolina has also had at least one prospect taken in 19 of the past 20 NFL Drafts - including one or more every year between 2002 and 2017. - Rock Hill Herald

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Former Oklahoma starting quarterback Spencer Rattler appears poised to take over the Gamecocks offense. South Carolina would love it if he could replicate a terrific redshirt freshman season in 2020. Rattler was 15-2 as a starter for the Sooners, completing 70.1% of his passes for 4,595 yards. He passed for 40 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. - AP College Football

The pass was completed and a teammate already had South Carolina receiver Josh Vann wrapped, but Sherrod Greene ran over to help get Vann to the ground. Quarterback Luke Doty took another snap and couldn't find his man, so he kept the ball and began to run. Greene, a mischievous grin stretched around his mouthpiece, bee-lined toward him on an arrow's trajectory. Doty knew he was supposed to step out of bounds and did, which was fine. Greene wasn't really going to smack him. Probably. "Pretty much, my main goal is just staying healthy," South Carolina's "super senior" sixth-year linebacker said. "I know if I have a full complete season, I got big plans ahead of me." His energy and unfettered enthusiasm in the Gamecocks' Garnet and Black Spring Game weren't surprising.

It's what head coach Shane Beamer wants to see no matter if it's a meaningless scrimmage. But after playing in only four games over the past two seasons, Greene learned that every chance to play can't be discounted. He's spent far too much time on the sideline, willing to give up anything he'd be asked to sacrifice if he could get just one more play. "Having back-to-back season-ending injuries, it can take a toll on you. I had good support in my corner," he said. "My family and my mom kept my head on straight. It wasn't as bad as it may seem, but it was a good trial for me." - The Post and Courier

South Carolina's all-time leading scorer is heading to the NFL. Former Gamecocks kicker Parker White will participate in a rookie mini-camp with the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week, he told The State on Monday. Such a mini-camp is essentially a three-day tryout. In a perfect world, he'll only need the first weekend to land a spot on a roster. He surpassed Elliott Fry as the school's all-time leading scorer with a 30-yard field goal against North Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Dec. 30. He finished his six years at South Carolina with 368 career points.

He also finished his college career ranked among the top three in program history in made field goals (T1st-72), field goals attempted (1st-99), extra points made (2nd-152) and extra point attempts (2nd-154). "He's automatic. He's clutch," head coach Shane Beamer said in November. "I don't know if there's a better kicker in the country." White concedes that the sixth year of eligibility he received via the NCAA's decision to grant another year to all players who played during the COVID-19 pandemic was a blessing in disguise. - Rock Hill Herald
