Spencer Rattler brings a substantial amount of publicity to South Carolina's starting quarterback position this season, and the Gamecocks are hoping the talent that never left him throughout last season's benching at Oklahoma has come with him. It certainly seemed to show itself in the spring game, one glimpse at a time, as neither he nor the coaches needed to display everything in a glorified scrimmage. "We'll build this offense around what we do best, but Spencer is certainly a guy that one, has played a lot of football, and has a lot more experience than those other quarterbacks do, and two, he has a unique skillset," coach Shane Beamer said in the spring. "He has great arm talent but he's athletic enough that he can run around as well." Glowing words. The same kind of illumination, if different terminology, that surrounded Luke Doty. And Ryan Hilinksi. And Brandon McIlwain. And Connor Mitch. Rattler brings skill, poise and presence to the pocket, but the Gamecocks are hoping that square one is stabilized before imagining what he can build on top of it. That means Rattler stays under center for the entire season, instead of handing his ticket to the caretaker of the USC QB Merry-Go-Round. Since 2015, the Gamecocks have had one stretch where they could rely on the same man at quarterback. - The Post and Courier
