Dakereon Joyner, South Carolina, Player News

2022 PRESEASON ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: Dakereon Joyner, University of South Carolina,...Joyner, a 6-1, 215-pound redshirt senior from North Charleston, S.C., is a versatile, all-purpose performer who excels with the ball in his hands. He caught a career-high 24 passes for 221 yards a year ago, and is coming off an MVP performance in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl as a quarterback, where he completed all nine of his pass attempts for 160 yards and a touchdown and ran 10 times for 64 yards. - South Carolina Football

There ought to be a Best Dressed Player award at SEC Media Days. South Carolina's Dakereon Joyner would have won for 2022 as soon as he walked into the College Football Hall of Fame from the adjacent Omni Hotel. Joyner credited his mother, Theteka for the fashion concept. "Peach suit, brown shoes, tan socks, gold accessories," Joyner said at his dazzling July 19 appearance. "Shout out to Men's Wearhouse." The former Fort Dorchester High School star quarterback, veteran wide receiver and bowl hero was soaking it in while hitting the circuit of 10 interview rooms at the SEC Media Days circus. What a nice reward for a redshirt senior's up-and-down, four-plus years of university service.

It was head coach Shane Beamer's nod to Joyner's team emphasis previously lauded by former South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp and Fort Dorchester head coach Steve Laprad. And others. The Tuesday timing was extra special, the 22-year-old Joyner said: South Carolina's SEC Media Days turn happened to fall on the 13th anniversary of his father Damond's death. South Carolina's most versatile player was looking forward, too. "The sky's the limit for us," Joyner said. "We have a chip on our shoulder. We're more prepared than we were last year. We're more excited than ever." - Post and Courier

South Carolina has announced the contingent it will bring to SEC media days next week in Atlanta. Head coach Shane Beamer will be accompanied by receiver Dakereon Joyner, offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn and defensive lineman Zacch Pickens. The Gamecocks will begin their media rotations at 1 p.m. on July 19. Joyner finished last year as the hero of South Carolina's 38-21 romp of North Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

The North Charleston product completed all nine of his passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 64 yards rushing on 10 carries. "What I say to other people: Never give up on your dreams," Joyner said after his performance netted him bowl MVP honors. "If you've ever got something out there that you want to get, keep going. Never give up. Adversity is going to come, but it's how you overcome it." - Rock Hill Herald

Dakereon Joyner will talk about the past, because it isn't like there's something to hide. "I think everybody in the country knows what happened," he quipped at South Carolina's Media Day. But a much more personal topic is foremost on his mind. "This the year, man. This is the year," the Gamecocks' fourth-year athlete said. "I just know God is going to do some great things for me. I'm confident, I'm prepared." That's always been the question with Joyner, who had a tremendous high school career at Fort Dorchester High that culminated with the 2017 "Mr. Football" award given to the state's top player. When will the lethality he showed whenever the ball was in his hands in high school manifest itself on the college field? He hasn't been able to do it thus far, mostly because he hasn't had a real opportunity. - The Post and Courier

Dakereon Joyner has been a quarterback his entire life, and a very good one. So it's extremely strange to arrive for practice at South Carolina every day and catch passes instead of throwing them. Ask him and he'd probably say if there was a chance for him to start at quarterback, he'd jump. Yet as he transitions to receiver, a move that started over a year ago but has twice been interrupted by lengthy delays, he's at peace. He's comfortable in his new role at receiver, and comfortable that he's not looking over his shoulder, wondering if he'll again be asked to come back to QB. He wouldn't mind doing it if the Gamecocks' quarterback room was waylaid by some malady (and during these troubled times, that's a distinct possibility), but he's also eager to show what he can do at receiver. "I think it's a big confidence thing for me. I think it has helped me tremendously," Joyner said. "Just got to continue to improve, do what I do best and help the team win." The speed, athleticism and savvy that earned him the state's 2017 "Mr. Football" Award has been a constant in Joyner's career and was a benefit to him last year as he battled Ryan Hilinski for the backup QB job. The staff liked what he could do but Hilinski represented more of what they needed at the spot, so they gently told Joyner that Hilinski would back up starter Jake Bentley. - The Post and Courier
