  07/15/20 - Rod RutherfordSr/2004, Pittsburgh, 6-2, 240 (DS#12 QB) + More +

As a star quarterback at Perry Traditional Academy, Rod Rutherford rushed for 13 touchdowns his senior season. He now has his alma mater scrambling for a new coach. Rutherford, a former standout at Pitt who won a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers, has resigned as Perry's coach due to personal reasons, City League athletic director Karen Arnold confirmed Tuesday. Rutherford could not be reached for comment. A 1999 Perry graduate, Rutherford returned to coach his alma mater in 2017. The Commodores struggled in his three seasons, going 1-7, 3-5 and 3-6. His previous coaching experience all came at the college level, as he held positions at Saint Vincent, Pitt and IUP.

City League teams have not yet started summer workouts, but heat acclimatization begins Aug. 10 and the first day of practice is Aug. 17. Rutherford, 39, is considered one of the greatest players in City League history. He was a two-time Post-Gazette athlete of the year and led Perry to two City League titles and to the PIAA Class 3A championship game in 1997. A quarterback and defensive back at Perry, Rutherford was ranked by scouting services as one of the top players in the country. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Only three Division I college football programs have three players on the 2020 Bednarik Award Watch List released Monday. Pitt is one of them, joining defending national champion LSU and USC. Selected to the list from the Panthers are safety Paris Ford, defensive end Patrick Jones II and defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman. The trio played a large role last season in helping the Pitt defense lead the nation in sacks per game (3.9) and rank ninth in tackles for a loss per game (7.9). Ford and Twyman were first-team All-ACC selections, and Jones was a second-team honoree. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

In response to the NCAA Board of Governor's vote to allow athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL), Pitt football announced Tuesday a partnership with marketing consultant and best-selling author Jeremy Darlow. Pitt's football players will have access to Darlow's online course, The DARLOW Rules, which is dedicated to helping student-athletes develop their personal brands. Members of the football team can speak directly to Darlow, who also has partnered with West Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and UCLA, NFL stars Aaron Rodgers and Von Miller, soccer's Lionel Messi, auto racing's Dale Earnhardt Jr. and rappers Kanye West and Snoop Dogg.

That's in addition to Pitt's current Cathy and John Pelusi Family Life Skills Program, which uses career counseling to help prepare athletes for several post-graduate initiatives, including graduate school and community service. "At Pitt, the young men in our program are far more than just football players," coach Pat Narduzzi said in a statement. "They are students, leaders, citizens and future professionals who will make their mark on the world in many different ways. "We want to equip our student-athletes with skills and knowledge that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Jeremy shares our commitment to developing the total person, and I know our team is going to benefit greatly from his outstanding workshops and experiences." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  05/12/20 - Bub MeansrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-1, 227 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Sifting through the transfer portal to find a big-bodied wide receiver seems to be becoming commonplace for Skip Holtz and his staff. At the beginning of March, Louisiana Tech landed pass-catcher Jerrod Means, who was enrolled at Tennessee during the 2019 season. Recruiting service 247sports officially reported Means' move Tuesday on its website and the Hampton, Georgia native has "wideout at La Tech" listed in his Twitter bio. Means confirmed to The News-Star that he has enrolled and been with the Bulldogs for the past two months.

Due to NCAA FBS transfer rules, he'll have to sit out 2020 but four years of eligibility remaining starting in 2021. "I felt the family atmosphere at Tech and I like what the coaches are building there," he said. After this upcoming season, Tech is set to lose the bulk of its receiving production as big-time playmakers Adrian Hardy and Isaiah Graham on the perimeter and Cee Jay Powell at the slot will all graduate. The addition of Means will help the ease the burden at the position in 2021. - Monroe News Star

  05/10/20 - Keldrick WilsonrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 295 (DS#147 OG) + More +

When he can't find everything he needs on his roster, Pat Narduzzi is never afraid to look elsewhere to improve his team. Pitt's coach continued what has become an annual event when he nailed down an experienced graduate transfer for his offensive line, getting a verbal commitment Saturday night from Hampton (Va.) University tackle Keldrick Wilson. Wilson, 6-foot-5, 299 pounds, has one year of eligibilty remaining after spending the past four seasons at Hampton. He was a regular starter only during the 2019 season, helping running back Shai McKenzie, formerly of Washington High School, to rush for 1,214 yards. Wilson, 22, is the fourth graduate transfer offensive lineman to join the Panthers in the past four seasons after Narduzzi lured Brandon Hodges (Texas), Stefano Millin (Kent State) and Nolan Ulizio (Michigan) to Pitt. Millin and Ulizio started every game during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, respectively. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  05/07/20 - Melquise StovallrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 5-08, 186 (DS#182 WR) + More +

Melquise Stovall, a dynamic receiver/returner, is on track to being fully reinstated to the Hawaii football team. "He's doing everything I've asked him to do at this point," head coach Todd Graham said. "And as long as he does that, he'll be with us. I've been very proud of his progress so far. I don't want to get ahead of myself, either." Stovall had productive back-to-back games - two touchdowns catches against Boise State and two against Air Force - when he was dismissed from the team on Oct. 21. "There are certain expectations required of a football student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii," then UH coach Nick Rolovich said in an Oct. 21 news release announcing the dismissal.

"We hold all of our student-athletes to these standards and expect them to represent our football program to the highest degree. We wish Melquise the best as he moves forward." Stovall continued to attend classes the remainder of the semester. After Graham was hired to succeed Rolovich, who resigned in January to accept the head coaching job at Washington State, several players lobbied for Stovall's reinstatement. "They said, 'he messed up. He made a mistake,' " Graham recalled. "(Stovall) came in and said, 'I was dead wrong. I want a second chance. And Coach, you will not regret it.' I think everyone deserves that." - Honolulu Advertiser

Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke said Wednesday if the football team is allowed into Heinz Field to play a normal season, fans will be a part of it. "If we're playing the game, we'll be playing it in front of fans," she said, speaking on a Zoom conference call with reporters. "If there is a concern about human contact, we wouldn't be playing the game. "I do feel fans are a part of the experience. Coaches and student-athletes playing the game with no one there, there is definitely something missing. We value that atmosphere.

"The social distancing, if those orders are still in place in the fall, we won't be having games as we know them now. If we're allowed to be around one another, hopefully, we would go back to what we would consider a normal football season." She said all ideas will be considered if and when it becomes necessary to adjust the football schedule. She also doesn't expect any serious schedule conflicts at Heinz Field with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But she said the 12 spring practices that were canceled last month probably won't be made up before training camp opens in August. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  03/22/20 - Phil JurkovecrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 243 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Five days of spring football practice is too limited a sample for a newly-organized coaching staff to make accurate player assessments. That's all Boston College had after first-year head coach Jeff Hafley had to suspend the Eagles' remaining 10 practice sessions and the annual Jay McGillis Memorial spring football game in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the small window, Hafley and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti formed a favorable impression of Notre Dame transfer quarterback Phil Jurkovec. "I just think from practice one to practice five he looked like a different kid," said Hafley during a conference call. "He started to get really comfortable with the system and the players and you could start to see some leadership pop out of him."

Jurkovec, a 6-4, 227-pound, redshirt sophomore from Pittsburgh, performed his tasks under a veil of uncertainty. Jurkovec applied for a waiver to the NCAA's transfer regulation so he could eligible for the 2020 season and is awaiting their decision. Jurkovec will compete for the starting job against incumbent Dennis Grosel, who replaced injured starter Anthony Brown (knee) on Oct. 5 at Louisville. Grosel won three of the five ACC games he started and finished with a Birmingham Bowl loss to Cincinnati. - Boston Herald

  03/18/20 - Maurice FfrenchSr/2020, Pittsburgh, 5-11, 197 (DS#56 WR) + More +

Maurice Ffrench is trying to kill time like the rest of us. Except instead of playing Fortnite or Call of Duty for an inordinate amount of time, Pitt's single-season receptions leader is lifting trash bags filled with books and running stairs, doing what he can to get himself ready for the NFL ... within the confines of an unofficial national quarantine. Ffrench is back in Pittsburgh. He left town on Jan. 2, a week after the Panthers' 2019 regular season wrapped up, to train at the Michael Johnson Performance facility in McKinney, Texas. There, he prepared for the Hula Bowl, a senior showcase game on Jan. 27 in Honolulu, and, perhaps more importantly, his pro day. A pro day that probably isn't happening. As previously scheduled, Ffrench returned to his old house in Oakland last Saturday ahead of Pitt's pro day, which was supposed to take place Wednesday at the Panthers' indoor facility on the South Side. But Ffrench received word from Pitt that the event wouldn't go on due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ffrench, who caught 96 passes for 850 yards last season, was told by those same scouts not to stress over missing out on pro day. The possible Day 3 pick's tape is good enough for the teams interested to stay interested, he said. "But everybody wants to have their pro day to show your talent and your skills. It was kinda disappointing," Ffrench added. "But you've got to prepare for the worst, especially when I started hearing about the virus and the cancellation of things. It was always on my mind. But I just kept working." And Ffrench is still working - while practicing social distancing. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

  03/05/20 - Rashad WeaverrSr/2021, Pittsburgh, 6-4, 259 (DS#13 DE) + More +

Weaver - the Panthers' 2018 leader in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (14) - said it's "not a question" if he'll be fully healed from a torn ACL in time for the 2020 campaign. He's confident he'll be full-go in the fall after going down last August and missing the 2019 season. And he's looking forward to eventually linking up with a front four that guided Pitt's nationally ranked sack brigade. "I think I can step in and come back to where I left off," Weaver said. "Everybody at camp and on the team knows where I was at before I got hurt, and they know where I'm at now. And at the end of it, I didn't really lose a step. It's just going to keep getting better until August when I need to be ready."

Keyword there being "need." Weaver doesn't need to be ready for contact in March. So he's mostly taking it easy this spring. The redshirt senior practiced with the team for the first time Monday, when Pat Narduzzi's squad opened spring camp. "Helmet was tight," Weaver said with a laugh. "Hasn't been worn in a while." For what it's worth, though, he looked crisp. He knocked out individual drills, showcasing the first-step quickness and hand power that gave offensive tackles fits in previous seasons. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

The University of Pittsburgh football and men's basketball programs have been placed on probation for three years by the NCAA for a series of level II violations between 2015 and 2018. Former men's basketball coach Kevin Stallings was given a three-year show-cause order by the NCAA as part of the punishment announced Thursday. The NCAA found that Stallings - who coached at Pitt from 2016-2018 - allowed three noncoaches to perform coaching duties, meaning the school went over its allotment of practices. The NCAA also found that Stallings developed an alert system to make sure the noncoaches would not be caught on the practice floor. Stallings also ordered personnel to delete practice video to prevent the illegal practices from being discovered by the school administration.

The NCAA also found that football coach Pat Narduzzi was present at the team's practice facility when "three former quality control staff members performed coaching duties, resulting in the program exceeding the allowable number of permissible coaches." Narduzzi must sit out two days of practice next August. Narduzzi also served a one-week ban for off-campus recruiting from Dec. 1, 2019, through Feb. 1, 2020. Pitt, which self-reported the violations, was fined $5,000 and 0.5% of the men's basketball and football budgets. - AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Taysir Mack with 47 seconds left and Pittsburgh held on to beat Eastern Michigan 34-30 in the Quick Lane Bowl on Thursday night. After taking its first lead of the game, Pittsburgh (8-5) then forced Eastern Michigan (6-7) to turn it over on downs from its 40. That sealed Pitt's first bowl victory in five appearances under coach Pat Narduzzi. The Eagles came up just short in a closely contested game just as they did in three previous bowls under coach Chris Creighton. Eastern Michigan quarterback Mike Glass was ejected with 10 seconds left after throwing punches at two players. Eagles cornerback Kevin McGill was ejected earlier for unsportsmanlike conduct. Glass was 28 of 50 for 311 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The senior also ran for 83 yards and a score. Pickett completed 27 of 39 passes for 361 yards and three scores, including a school-record, 96-yard TD pass to Maurice Ffrench. Ffrench finished with 12 catches for 165 yards, most of which came on the tying score in the second quarter. - AP College Football
