As a star quarterback at Perry Traditional Academy, Rod Rutherford rushed for 13 touchdowns his senior season. He now has his alma mater scrambling for a new coach. Rutherford, a former standout at Pitt who won a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers, has resigned as Perry's coach due to personal reasons, City League athletic director Karen Arnold confirmed Tuesday. Rutherford could not be reached for comment. A 1999 Perry graduate, Rutherford returned to coach his alma mater in 2017. The Commodores struggled in his three seasons, going 1-7, 3-5 and 3-6. His previous coaching experience all came at the college level, as he held positions at Saint Vincent, Pitt and IUP.

City League teams have not yet started summer workouts, but heat acclimatization begins Aug. 10 and the first day of practice is Aug. 17. Rutherford, 39, is considered one of the greatest players in City League history. He was a two-time Post-Gazette athlete of the year and led Perry to two City League titles and to the PIAA Class 3A championship game in 1997. A quarterback and defensive back at Perry, Rutherford was ranked by scouting services as one of the top players in the country. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette
