The heart and soul of Oregon State's defense is Rashed Jr. The redshirt senior was likely to go within the first two rounds of last year's NFL Draft, but returned to Corvallis for one more season because he felt like he had unfinished business with the Beavers. Rashed Jr. was a first-team All-American in 2019 and led the nation with 22.5 tackles for loss. He has put on 10 pounds leading up to this season in order to become an even more disruptive force, and he will be a nightmare to gameplan around for opposing offensive coordinators. - Gazette Times

Oregon State was hoping to get some good news this week in regards to junior wideout Tre'Shaun Harrison. It got the opposite. Smith said Monday that Harrison's appeal to play this fall has been denied and he will have to sit out the season. Harrison, a former four-star athlete out of Garfield High School in Washington, played 24 games over two seasons at Florida State before transferring out of Tallahassee. The Beavers are still waiting for news on the appeal of running back Trey Lowe, who also is hoping to play this season after transferring from Washington. Smith said Lowe's appeal is still pending. - Gazette Times

Oregon State's Jermar Jefferson is coming off a sophomore season where he ran for 685 yards and eight touchdowns. Not terrible, but not what Jefferson had in mind following a record-setting freshman year in 2018. Injuries and health played a big role in Jefferson's production decrease. So shortly after the 2019 season ended, Jefferson went to work on a game plan. Jefferson's big problem, it turned out, was simple. Eat. Eat more. What college boy doesn't like to eat, and eat a lot? Jefferson, for one. It's not that he was opposed to food. Just wasn't a priority. "I was barely eating twice a day," Jefferson said of his diet in 2019. "Honestly, I don't know why. I just wasn't hungry, I guess."

Jefferson said it's ideal for him to weigh around 215 to 217 pounds during the season. Jefferson struggled to maintain that weight last season, which he felt went back to his eating habits. OSU's strength and conditioning staff reviewed Jefferson's food intake, and told him it's simply not enough. What Jefferson was eating was OK - he says fast food was only a meal or two a week, though he's trying to cut that to zero - he just needs more of it. Now Jefferson is eating three meals a day, and then some with addition of snacks. His calorie intake has increased significantly. - The Oregonian

Elijah Jones' responsibilities within the Kansas football defense have become a lot more extensive this summer. Now in his third year with the program, the cornerback who joined the Jayhawks as a junior college transfer in 2018 could find himself in a starting role this fall, after playing infrequently as a reserve in 2019. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back from Cape Coral, Fla., thinks his game has developed enough since the end of his redshirt junior year that he'll be able to not only get on the field more as a senior, but also execute at a consistent enough level to maintain his spot.

"I've just got to stay mature, stay level-headed," Jones said during a video conference with reporters this week. "Keep focused and keep doing my job every single play. Keep going out there and making plays and just listen to what my coach has got going for me out there." That coach Jones referenced is Chevis Jackson, the one-time LSU standout entering his second season working for his former head coach, Les Miles. "Coach Jackson is showing us and teaching us the ropes," Jones said, "and showing us how to do that since he's been in our shoes before." - Lawrence Journal World

Sam Noyer is a fifth-year senior for the Colorado Buffaloes. After playing safety last year, he's returning to quarterback. When Sam Noyer put his name in the NCAA transfer portal last winter, he figured his time with the Colorado Buffaloes was done. After a coaching change and a few months of pondering his future, Noyer is back - although it's unclear when he'll actually be able to compete again because of the coronavirus pandemic pausing football until at least January.

During a virtual press conference Thursday, the fifth-year senior quarterback spoke to reporters for the first time since deciding to rejoin the Buffs in the spring to battle for the starting job. "I just felt like it was the right opportunity and the right time to compete with Tyler (Lytle) and Brendon (Lewis)," Noyer said. That was not on his mind last winter, though. "I had some other schools lined up and, to be honest, I really did not think I would come back to Colorado," Noyer said. - Daily Camera

Oregon State junior Jaydon Grant is the Beavers' front man for the Pac-12 Football Unity, a movement by a group of players asking the conference for change when it comes to COVID-19 safety, race issues and revenue sharing. Grant told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he's "willing to sit" out part or all of the 2020 football season if their COVID-19 protocols aren't put in place for player safety. Asked how much support there is among Oregon State players for the movement, Grant said he would "only speak for myself, but I'm willing to stand on what I believe in. Yeah, I'm willing to sit if there isn't the right precautions, and the right protocols in place to where we feel comfortable and feel assured that our health and safety will not be compromised by the pandemic." Grant said he spoke with Oregon State coaches regarding his belief on this matter, even before it became public Sunday. "I didn't want them to feel like they've been blindsided," Grant said. "They've told me they're proud of me, told me they support me. They understand it's really not about Oregon State but it's about the system." - The Oregonian
