Hamilcar Rashed Jr.'s Oregon State career has come to an end. On Tuesday, Rashed announced on social media that he will forgo playing one more season for the Beavers and will enter the 2021 NFL Draft. In 2019, Rashed delivered one of the greatest seasons ever by an Oregon State player. He set school records with 14 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss and was named a first team All-American. He was slowed by injuries this fall and finished the year with 15 tackles, two tackles for loss and no sacks.

Even though he was a senior, Rashed would have been eligible to return to the Beavers in 2021 because all Division I fall athletes were granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rashed was expected to be selected in the first or second round if he had entered the draft at the end of the 2019 season. Several recent mock drafts have him projected to go in the second or third round. - Gazette Times

Hamilcar Rashed Jr. doesn't want to make excuses, and nobody inside the Valley Football Center is going to let him. But it's no secret that the star linebacker hasn't had the type of season many expected when he announced he was returning to Oregon State for his senior season, and it's starting to become apparent that injuries are a partial reason. A first-team All-American last season, Rashed Jr. set school records with 22.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. One of the most disruptive defensive players in all of college football, he figured to be a one-man wrecking crew again in 2020. It hasn't quite worked out that way, though.

Rashed Jr. has recorded just one TFL and no sacks in four games. It came out a few weeks back that he battled multiple injuries during training camp and he's picked up another knock within the past two weeks. "I've gotta be better. Obviously there's a lot of things going on behind closed doors that not a lot of people know," Rashed Jr. "But that's no excuse for not making a lot of plays." Oregon State's coaches and players typically don't reveal much about injuries - coach Jonathan Smith likes to keep that information at a minimum. But when asked to elaborate on what he meant by "behind closed doors" Rashed Jr. was candid. "Honestly, I'm just a little banged up and stuff like that. It's been a grind of a year. But that's not really important right now," Rashed Jr. said. He dealt with thumb and ankle injuries early in the season and, according to defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar, didn't start to hit his stride until the week leading up to Oregon State's home matchup with Cal. - Gazette Times

The heart and soul of Oregon State's defense is Rashed Jr. The redshirt senior was likely to go within the first two rounds of last year's NFL Draft, but returned to Corvallis for one more season because he felt like he had unfinished business with the Beavers. Rashed Jr. was a first-team All-American in 2019 and led the nation with 22.5 tackles for loss. He has put on 10 pounds leading up to this season in order to become an even more disruptive force, and he will be a nightmare to gameplan around for opposing offensive coordinators. - Gazette Times

Oregon State officially greeted Beavers athletes back to campus Monday, albeit with masks, gloves, testing equipment and physical distancing when possible. Athletic director Scott Barnes estimated that between 100 and 110 OSU athletes from various sports returned to campus Monday. That number will grow over the next several weeks to allow time for quarantine periods and testing for coronavirus. Barnes said it won't be until at least Thursday when athletes are cleared to take part in voluntary workouts at the school's Sports Performance Center. Since the campus was closed due to the pandemic in mid-March, Barnes said OSU had one positive test among athletes, but didn't specify the sport. Barnes said the school would provide updates when there are positive cases among its athletic population. - The Oregonian

Hamilcar Rashed Jr. is like more than 80 percent of Oregon State's football roster, living far away from the Corvallis campus with athletic facilities closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. It matters little to the record-setting senior outside linebacker. Rashed leaves his mother's home in Chandler, Ariz. each morning with a workout mission. Rashed is either in the weight room or running hills near Discovery Park every day but Sunday. Some days, it's a double workout. Whether he's in Corvallis or in the Arizona heat of Chandler, a coronavirus outbreak or not, only one thing matters to Rashed. "Coronavirus probably shifts a lot of people's mindsets," Rashed said. "But me, my mindset is the same. I'm going to wake up every day, whether we have football or no football in the fall, and I'm going to do everything I can to prepare myself for that."

Rashed ended his spectacular junior season in 2019 with a thud, playing the final two games with a heavily-protected broken thumb. Prior to the injury, Rashed was as dominant as any defensive player in the Pac-12, racking up school-record highs for sacks (14) and tackles for loss (22 1/2). Rashed reports the thumb injury is nearly behind him; he only needs the seal of approval from a doctor's visit to proclaim it completely healed. In the meantime, Rashed said he's been able to go full out on workouts the past two months. Rashed, who opted to return for his senior year at OSU rather than take early entry into pro football, says he watched the first day of NFL Draft coverage in April. Rashed's day is likely to come next spring, particularly if he can continue the production of his junior season. - The Oregonian

Having seen his team dominate California all game, Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith felt it was appropriate that linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. put an emphatic stamp on the day with with a game-ending sack. It was the season-high ninth sack by Smith's defense and helped erase any lingering memories the Beavers had after suffering a 45-point loss one week earlier. "Overall for our defense to be able to finish it that way was huge," Smith said after Oregon State's 21-17 win over California on Saturday. "We talked about putting the previous game to rest and I thought our guys did it. Had a great week of work, energy and attention to detail, and it played out today."

B.J. Baylor scored on a 13-yard touchdown run with 4:41 remaining for the game-winning score after Oregon State blew a 14-point lead. Jake Luton threw a pair of touchdown passes, Artavis Pierce ran for 80 yards to help the Beavers (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) win for the second time in three games. "We're not the same Oregon State team as last year," said defensive end Jordan Whittley, referring to the Beavers' 49-7 loss to the Golden Bears in 2018. "Different team." Especially on defense. Rashed had three sacks and four tackles for losses, tied for third-most in school history. Riley Sharp also had three sacks. "It's the most fun I've ever had," Sharp said. "Because our run defense was really, really good today, in some situations they were forced to pass which allowed us to run some play calls that allowed multiple blitzers coming off the edge and different schemes to help us get to the quarterback." - Oregon State/AP College Football
