  Dillon Gabriel threw five touchdown passes - three to Marlon Williams - and UCF's top-ranked offense rolled in a 51-34 victory over Tulane on Saturday. Gabriel was 26-of-40 passing with 422 yards a week after throwing for a school-record 601 yards that included five touchdowns in a 50-49 loss to Memphis. Williams made nine catches or 174 yards. His longest reception was a 54-yarder in which he sidestepped a couple of defenders on his way to the end zone. Greg McCrae ran for 162 of the Knights' 267 yards rushing, including a TD, with UCF (3-2, 2-2 American Athletic Conference) finishing with 689 yards offense to Tulane's 340. UCF came in averaging over 636 yards offense, tops in the nation. The Knights scored touchdowns on all four of their second-quarter drives as they turned a four-point first-quarter deficit into a 37-14 halftime lead. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for UCF, its longest since 2016. Michael Pratt was 14 of 24 for 215 yards passing, three touchdowns and an interception for the Green Wave (2-4, 0-4), who have lost three straight.   Auburn quarterback Bo Nix directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, capped by a 42-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 1:11 left, to lift the Tigers to a 35-28 comeback win over Mississippi on Saturday. Auburn (3-2 Southeastern) rallied from a 28-27 deficit on its final offensive series, covering 80 yards in six plays. Williams, finishing with eight catches for 134 yards, caught Nix's pass in front of the Auburn sideline, twisted away from two tacklers and turned up the sideline to easily race for the decisive touchdown. Ole Miss (1-4) reached the Auburn 29-yard line in the final 10 seconds. Auburn forced an incomplete pass and preserved the win on a game-ending Ole Miss infraction as quarterback Matt Corral advanced past the line of scrimmage before throwing a desperation pass that would have counted as a Jordyn Peters interception without the penalty. Tank Bigsby had touchdown runs of 4 and 18 yards and finished with 129 yards on 24 carries as the Tigers finished with a turnover free 462 yards of total offense.   While Nix's unimproved road play in Year 2 could be cause for concern, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn appeared confident Tuesday that Nix will get things corrected with three road games - at Ole Miss, at Mississippi State and at Alabama - remaining on the schedule this year. "We played Georgia and they've got an extremely talented defense," Malzahn said. "That was a challenge. But like I said, up until this point Bo has done a really good job of protecting the football, even going back to last year and the (consecutive passes without an interception) streak and all that. He was trying to make a play. We'll do better moving forward in that situation. I'm very confident we won't make the same mistakes again."

Despite Nix's three interceptions against South Carolina, Malzahn applauded his quarterback's competitiveness in the losing effort, though he believes the Tigers can make things easier on him by being more balanced and not necessarily putting as much on his shoulders. Against the Gamecocks, Nix had the 47 pass attempts and added 15 rushing attempts-meaning he had the ball in his hands for 62 of the team's 83 plays from scrimmage, and that's without accounting for RPO plays in which he made the decision to hand off the ball. "(Balance is) really what we're going to focus on," Malzahn said. "That will help everything." Nix proved to his teammates Saturday that, despite his struggles and turnover problems, he's going to keep fighting until the end. - Birmingham News

  Nix tossed three interceptions last week in a loss at South Carolina, and now goes on the road to play the next youngest starter in the SEC West, Ole Miss redshirt sophomore Matt Corral. Corral is coming off a six-interception loss at Arkansas. We already know that Nix has the ability to perform well under pressure, and that's why it was difficult to see him struggle against the Gamecocks. This is going to sound crazy, but he kinda looked like a still-young quarterback whose offense didn't have a spring practice with a new coordinator. Malzahn even said it. "You know, it could be just Game 4 and not going through spring, I don't know, but if you look at the stat sheet, we wanted to be balanced, and for the most part we were," Malzahn said. All true. Nix's three picks were the game. After the brutal loss at Georgia, Nix is playing like this season is a mulligan. There was the boneheaded mistake at the end of the Arkansas game, and then his decision making in the second half against South Carolina once again looked like a player lacking focus. People want to know what's wrong with Nix. He's playing like an underclassman in a season that doesn't count against his eligibility. Every coach in the country was worried about motivating underclassmen going into this season. - Birmingham News

  Despite a career-high, Hunter Kampmoyer beat himself up after the Rose Bowl. The Oregon tight end, who had two catches for 24 yards in the Ducks' win over Wisconsin, was disappointed in himself for a critical dropped pass on third down with less than 4:30 to go in a one-point game. It didn't end up costing Oregon, which held on for a 28-27 win, but the potentially game-sealing nature of the play wasn't lost on Kampmoyer. "After that one in the Rose Bowl I was kind of hard on myself for a little bit, but all I can do is improve and get better and put that behind me," he said. "I've been working all offseason, getting better and more confident and I do feel much better catching the ball and more confident. I'm moving on from that and excited to play football this year and see what I'm capable of doing."

Kampmoyer is one of five scholarship tight ends for the Ducks, who are deeper at the position than most FBS teams. He is the most experienced in the group, which also features Cam McCormick, Spencer Webb, Patrick Herbert and DJ Johnson. They each bring unique skill sets to the field and though offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead also operates primarily out of 11 and 12 personnel (one back and either one or two tight ends), he's shown a consistent willingness to utilize those players in the passing game. A converted defensive linemen, Kampmoyer has been called upon mostly as a blocker but is hoping to showcase his catching abilities more this fall. "They want to give us the ball in this offense," Kampmoyer said. "Explosive plays, also use us in the run game with blocking. It's creating a lot more opportunities for us to get the ball and we're all excited about that." - The Oregonian

  The offseason addition of Chad Morris was supposed to help evolve Auburn's passing offense, but through four games this season the Tigers' passing attack has lagged behind. After a brutal performance against South Carolina, when Bo Nix threw three costly interceptions and completed just 24 of his 47 pass attempts for 272 yards, Auburn's passing offense is among the worst in the SEC an toward the bottom nationally among the 77 FBS teams already playing this season. The Tigers are averaging 217.3 passing yards per game, which is an increase from last season, but ranks 10th in the SEC this year and 51st nationally. The uptick in passing yards is also coming at a bit of a cost, with Auburn's passing efficiency the second-worst in the SEC and 66th nationally at 112.23. That's on pace to be the worst of the Gus Malzahn era (124.47 in 2015). It's something Auburn will need to address - whether it's scaling back the pass-heavy nature of the offense or finding a way for Nix to elevate his game and get the receivers on the same page - if it hopes to find more consistency on offense as the second half of the season approaches. Fortunately for Auburn, its next opponent, Ole Miss, features the SEC's worst pass efficiency defense and third-worst passing defense overall. - Birmingham News

  It's been more than seven decades since the Gamecocks beat Auburn, and it certainly hadn't happened since South Carolina joined the SEC. Auburn jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, but quarterback Bo Nix struggled mightily from that point on. Nix threw three interceptions and topped the day off with a unwise scramble on fourth down during Auburn's final drive in the final seconds. South Carolina fans recognized that kind of inept late-game management. The Gamecocks did not have to deal with any of that on Saturday, taking care of the football and taking advantage of Auburn's miscues. - Daily Advertiser

  OCT 19 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dillon Gabriel, UCF, So., QB, Mililani, Hawaii,...Gabriel set American Athletic Conference single-game records for passing yards and total offense in the Knights' 50-49 setback to Memphis. He completed 35 of 49 passes for 601 yards and five touchdowns, adding 49 rushing yards and another TD to account for 650 yards of total offense. His 601 passing yards broke the previous conference mark of 557, set by Cincinnati's Hayden Moore against Memphis in 2015, while his 650 yards of offense bettered the old mark of 635, set by SMU's Garrett Gilbert against Temple in 2013.   Oregon coach Mario Cristobal says he's been impressed with the Ducks' new players. Oregon's 2020 recruiting class will start having an impact on the field right away. Mario Cristobal said five-star prospects Justin Flowe (linebacker), Noah Sewell (linebacker) and Dontae Manning (cornerback) have a chance to live up to their billing like defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux did last season, albeit without the benefit of a full spring practice and offseason due to the pandemic. With so many key players from last year's Pac-12 championship team graduating or opting out, the Ducks will also lean on transfers to help reload.

"If you're going to try to bring a guy that's a grad transfer or a junior college player into your program, you're doing it because they already are physically mature and you certainly want to target guys that are mentally mature," Cristobal said Wednesday after Oregon's fifth fall camp practice. "(Players) that, from a cultural standpoint, they understand that they are joining a new family. They have to adapt, they have to come full throttle to make it work." T.J. Bass, who transferred from Butte College, reminds the coaching staff of a more versatile Shane Lemieux. The 6-foot-5, 318-pound junior has been competing at both tackle positions and was the top-ranked junior college guard prospect. Cristobal said Bass could also play center, if needed. "T.J. Bass is going to be an outstanding football player," Cristobal said. "He is powerful, he's massive, he's smart, tough, diligent, all those things.   Oregon senior Johnny Johnson is expected to be Tyler Shough's No. 1 wide receiver this season. Of course Johnny Johnson watched Justin Herbert steal the Monday Night Football spotlight. Oregon's leading returning wide receiver knows what it feels like for Keenan Allan, Mike Williams and the other skill players the Los Angeles Chargers' rookie quarterback is featuring on the highlight reel. "I've watched every game," Johnson said of Herbert's hot start in the NFL. "He's going to be a 10-plus (years) guy in the league, and I'm excited to see what he can do in the future."

Right now Johnson is focused on finishing his four-year career with the Ducks. As other key players opted out of the 2020 season to focus on turning pro, the senior announced publicly that he was playing. With Herbert taking the snaps last season, Johnson finished with a team-high 57 receptions for 836 yards and seven touchdowns to bounce back from a sophomore slump. "It was hard seeing some of my brothers leave. That was tough," Johnson said. "I always wanted to play for four years here. That was something I wanted to do." Oregon will have a new starting quarterback for the first time since Herbert established himself as the No. 1 QB during the 2016 season. When the Ducks were sent home in March due to the pandemic, Johnson spent a lot of time working out with fellow Arizona import Tyler Shough, the favorite to win the job. "He has a heart for the game and he gets guys together and gets guys juiced and ready to play," Johnson said of Shough after Tuesday's fall camp practice. "I'm excited to see what he can do this year. He's doing a great job right now. We'll see how this thing goes." - Register Guard

  Jordon Scott shed 14 pounds this offseason, more than any other returning Oregon player, and dropped a number from his jersey from 34 to 3. Fat Mac, as the 311-pound nose tackle goes by, is now more of a Big Mac and he's aspiring to be Fast Mac. "Losing weight definitely was a conscious decision," Scott said. "Talking to a lot of the scouts, they all say they want to see me pass rush and get up field more. I hope that'll help me this year." Scott's transformation was one of several among Ducks defensive tackles this summer. Four returning UO interior defenders lost a combined 46 pounds, not including freshman Jayson Jones dropping 40 pounds from his listed 350 as a recruit. "We shed some weight but if you look at our body (compositions), our body comps are considerably better than what they've been before," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "We've added muscle mass, we've shed some fat, we move better, we're more explosive and we range anywhere from as light as the 278s to as heavy as the 325-330s.   The Auburn Tigers, given a gift inadvertent whistle on a botched spike in the closing seconds, sent Anders Carlson out for a second try at a game-winning field goal Saturday. This time the junior did not miss. Carlson booted a 39-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to give No. 13 Auburn a controversial 30-28 victory over the University of Arkansas on a rainy, muddy afternoon before a crowd of 17,490 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Arkansas (1-2), which fought back from a 17-0 deficit to take a 28-27 lead in the fourth quarter, nearly pulled off its second road win over a ranked team in as many weeks.

The controversy over Auburn quarterback Bo Nix's muffed snap and spike in the game's final half-minute is certain to live long in the lore of the series between the SEC West rivals. On a third-down play from the Arkansas 19 with the clock dropping below 30 seconds, Nix fumbled the snap, grabbed the ball from the grass and clearly spiked it behind him. As the officials flagged Nix for intentional grounding and began blowing their whistles, Arkansas safety Joe Foucha pounced on the loose ball. After a lengthy replay review, referee Jason Autrey announced that it confirmed the call of intentional grounding, and the officials actually ran 10 seconds off the clock for the grounding flag to rub salt in the Hogs' wound. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  Kayvon Thibodeaux was the best pass rusher in the Pac-12 by the end of last season and he enters this fall in the same place. Even in a short season, Thibodeaux should have every opportunity for ample production. The Pac-12 North lost a lot of very good offensive linemen, which sets up as a potential feeding frenzy for Thibodeaux. The depth behind him at defensive end is less certain. Mase Funa is the projected starter at Stud and Austin Faoliu at defensive tackle, though both could move to end as well. Bradyn Swinson spent the spring at defensive end and the freshman will clearly be in the mix for early playing time. The interior of the defensive line returns starters in Faoliu and Jordon Scott and though there are hits to the two-deep, Oregon actually is arguably in a better position in terms of talent. Along with Thibodeaux, Faoliu and Scott give the Ducks their top three tacklers back on the defensive line. But the tackles need to be more consistent pass rushers and have a short sample to show that before trying to make it to the NFL. - The Oregonian

  Former Boise State safety Jordan Happle is heading home to Oregon to finish his college football career. Happle is from Portland, Oregon, and on Monday, he announced on Twitter that he's heading to the University of Oregon, where he'll be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer. Boise State confirmed on Sept. 24 that Happle was in the transfer portal. He was limited to five games last fall due to injuries, but he was expected to compete for a starting spot this season in the Broncos' secondary, which already has to replace safeties Kekoa Nawahine (graduation) and D'Andre Pierce, who transferred to Arizona State. - Idaho Statesman
