  Bryson Young had a breakout senior season at the Stud position, which is always productive in Avalos' defense. Mase Funa is the clear favorite to take over as starter and Isaac Townsend and Treven Ma'ae are both coming off redshirt seasons but spent time with the second and third-team defenses, respectively, during the spring. Most of Funa's disruptive plays came against weaker nonconference play, but that has more to do with Young's ascent into a dominant force than anything. With more reps should come more explosive and disruptive plays from Funa, who will get to face a comparatively weaker mix of offensive tackles due to player graduations and opt outs. - The Oregonian

  Oregon's top outside cornerback isn't leaving for the NFL just yet. Deommodore Lenoir, the Ducks' starting boundary corner who declared for the NFL Draft last month, announced he's opting back in and will return to Oregon for the 2020 season. Lenoir had 47 tackles with 2.5 for loss, seven pass breakups, an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery last season. As a sophomore, he had 52 tackles with three for loss and nine pass breakups. - The Oregonian

  The Oregon secondary is losing yet another starter. Brady Breeze, who had a breakout second half to the 2019 season en route to earning Rose Bowl defensive MVP accolades, is opting out of the 2020 season and declaring for the NFL draft. Despite serving as a backup for the first eight games last season, Breeze had a career-high 62 tackles, two interceptions, three fumble returns including a touchdown, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. He made 40 of those tackles, both interceptions, two of his three fumble returns, three pass breakups and forced a fumble during the final six games and took over as the starter at boundary safety. Breeze was expected to start for the Ducks this fall, but instead becomes the fifth Oregon player to opt out. - The Oregonian

  It was an off night for UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who completed 28 of 51 passes for 330 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He started off hot, finding Jacob Harris for a 12-yard touchdown for the first score of the game. But Gabriel went 1-of-8 during a stretch that included his second interception of the season on a ball batted up at the line of scrimmage and picked off by Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. Gabriel threw two interceptions against the Golden Hurricane during last season's 34-31 loss. "I put this one on me," Gabriel said after dropping to 11-4 as a starter. "I've got to be better at QB play and we have to execute at a higher level. It shows when you don't do that what happens." Heupel said the entire team was responsible for breakdowns that cost the Knights a win. "Last year, we were 0-3 in those one-score games," he said. "You do the things we did tonight - coaching staff and players - that's how you end up on the wrong side of it." - Orlando Sentinel

  Accountability was important after the Tigers' loss, and quarterback Bo Nix stepped up and took responsibility for what he considered a fall short of the mark on Saturday. Nix, who was 21-of-41 passing for 177 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, and who had eight rushing yards, shouldered the blame for taking pressure at different points against the Bulldogs, elaborating that he didn't slide the right way to help his linemen pick up that pressure. Nix also refused to place any blame on his receivers for drops and instead said he made some throws that the sophomore deemed "pitiful." When asked where Auburn needs to improve the most, Nix again placed the brunt of that burden on himself. "Just quarterback play," Nix said. "He needs to do a better job of moving the offense, being a better leader and completing passes when they are there." - Opelika-Auburn News

  Oregon safety Brady Breeze is a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy, presented annually to the top scholar-athlete in college football. Breeze is among a record 199 players who are semifinalists for the award, which goes to a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility who has a GPA of at least 3.2, "outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor" and displays strong leadership. Oregon's Justin Herbert won the award, which comes with a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship, last year. Breeze, who was previously named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, had a career-high 62 tackles, three interceptions, three fumble returns including a touchdown, three pass breakups and a forced fumble during a breakout junior season in 2019. He's expected to start for the Ducks at boundary safety this fall. - The Oregonian

  Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has had the challenge of preparing for Nix the last two seasons. For Smart, the biggest change he's seen from freshman Nix to sophomore Nix is his ability to make quick decisions, a natural result of having a year of playing under his belt. "You can put no price tag on experience. I saw that with Jake Fromm. The first year, you saw these simple mistakes, and then the next year it was like, 'OK, I know the down and distance better. I know where the yard marker is. I know I'm in field-goal range, don't take a sack. I know where I'm going with the ball. I've seen this defense already about eight times. I know exactly what to do with the ball,'" Smart said. "It's very obvious that his learning curve is really fast in terms of being able to understand his offense, how to use it. He made some decisions in the last game that last year he wouldn't have made that decision that fast. "He's done a tremendous job, and he's a really good football player." - Opelika-Auburn News

  CJ Verdell is far and away the conference's leading returning rusher and coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Verdell has proven himself to be the bell cow for Oregon each of the last two years. He's versatile, a great pass protector and runs hard downhill. The one lingering question remains Verdell's durability. When he can stay on the field, he's one of the best running backs in all of college football. But for two straight years he's had to leave numerous games due to an array of minor injuries. Having said that, Verdell is still tough as nails as none of those ailments has caused him to miss a game entirely. - The Oregonian

  After looking at what Nix and his receivers did in the 29-13 win over Kentucky, Georgia's Kirby Smart noted that Auburn has an ability to use its skill positions and get the ball to them from different locations. As the leader of the offense, Nix's skill is an essential component of that. And Nix has plenty of skill. Smart listed off Nix's attributes saying he has a vertical passing game, a great arm and great athleticism. That helped him complete 16 out of his 27 pass attempts for 233 yards and three touchdowns against Kentucky. He completed one of the throws with his legs wrapped up by a defender, and launched another deep ball from off his back foot. Nix doesn't just have an arm. He's also got a serious set of legs. "People don't understand how good of a runner he is," Smart said.

In Auburn's season opener, Nix was the team's leading rusher. He picked up 34 yards on five rushing attempts, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. He went for 13 yards on one of his runs. But out of all of his skills, Nix's decision-making ability is one of the most critical pieces of his success as a quarterback. As a coach's son, Smart said Nix has been around the game all his life and shows an he knows what good decisions look like. It has helped Nix to go six straight games without throwing an interception. He has made 220 pass attempts since his last interception, which was intercepted by Derek Stingley in the LSU game. "I think the dink-and-dunk is the decision making he has, and it gives him the opportunity to not throw picks," Smart said. "Quarterbacks avoid picks because they don't throw into situations that are adverse." - Birmingham News

  Auburn quarterback Bo Nix was named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for his performance against Kentucky, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Monday. Nix was versatile for the Tigers in their season-opening 29-13 victory against Kentucky. He was 16-of-27 passing for 233 yards and three touchdowns, rushed five times for 34 yards and punted twice with an average of 38.5 yards. His second punt came to a stop on the Kentucky 2-yard line. Nix was named to the honor roll along with Baylor senior running back and return specialist Trestan Ebner, who scored four times three different ways in the Bears' 47-14 victory over Kansas. - Opelika-Auburn News

Gabriel completed 32 of 47 passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns, becoming the first UCF player in program history with back-to-back 400-yard games.   It wasn't the way UCF wanted to start its road contest against East Carolina, but the Knights overcame mistakes and penalties to blow out the Pirates 51-28 Saturday. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw four touchdown passes for the second consecutive game and at one point completed a school-record 18 consecutive passes as the offense generated more than 600 yards during back-to-back games. It was the 41st straight game that the Knights scored at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown. It was another inauspicious start for No. 13 UCF (2-0, 1-0 AAC), which gave up a touchdown after a 75-yard kickoff return to Georgia Tech on the opening drive last week. During Week 2 against East Carolina (0-1, 0-1 AAC), pre-snap penalties crushed the Knights' early momentum. UCF committed false starts during its first four offensive plays of the game, a trend that proved tough to shake. The Knights set a school record with 19 penalties for a loss of 139 yards. UCF trailed in the first quarter for the second consecutive week after a 17-yard Darius Pinnix touchdown run gave East Carolina an early 7-0 lead. But it would be all Knights the rest of the way, with UCF scoring 41 consecutive points.   The Pac-12 CEO Group announced today that based upon updated Pac-12 COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee recommendations that take into account material changes to testing capabilities, the prevalence of COVID-19 and cardiac issues, along with updated state and local health official guidance, the Conference will resume its football, basketball and winter sport seasons. The football season may now commence for those teams that have the necessary state and local health approvals on November 6, men's and women's basketball on November 25 consistent with the NCAA's official start date for these sports, and other winter sports consistent with the NCAA season dates for those sports. - Pac-12 Football

  Less than 48 hours after proclaiming his team as the best in Florida, UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel did what any pure passer worth his eye black would do. He held firm in the proverbial pocket. Gabriel stood by his proclamation during a brief session with reporters Monday, two days after his 417-yard, four-touchdown performance in the Knights' 49-21 romp of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The week before, the Yellow Jackets defeated FSU, 16-13. "I said what I said, and I was confident in it," said Gabriel, whose performance thrust him into early Heisman chatter. "It's up for you guys to feel whatever you guys want to feel. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but I still feel we're the best team in Florida, and that's all I've got to say." To this point, only four of the state's seven Division I-A programs have played a game. Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International are slated to open their seasons this weekend. Following UCF's win Saturday, it moved up one spot - to No. 13 - in the latest Associated Press rankings, behind No. 12 Miami (2-0) and the fifth-ranked Gators. - Tampa Tribune
