Gabriel completed 27 of 41 passes for a career-high 417 yards and four touchdowns, becoming the fifth player in program history to throw for more than 400 yards with four TDs in a game.   SEP 20 WALTER CAMP NATIONAL FBS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DILLON GABRIEL, UCF, Sophomore, Quarterback, Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani,...Dillon Gabriel completed 27-of-41 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns as 13th-ranked UCF defeated Georgia Tech, 49-21. Gabriel also rushed for 30 yards and led UCF to 660 yards of total offense.   Dillon Gabriel made sure Central Florida didn't let another game slip away on the road. The sophomore threw for a career-best 417 yards and four touchdowns, leading the No. 14 Knights to a 49-21 victory over Georgia Tech in their season opener Saturday. It was a rewarding performance for UCF, coming off the uncertainty of the pandemic-affected summer and a bit of a disappointing season by its standards in 2019. The Knights lost three games - all on the road - by a total of seven points.

After falling behind 28-7, Georgia Tech closed within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. But Gabriel led a dominating performance the rest of the way, finishing 27 of 41 to eclipse his previous career high of 365 yards in a game last season at East Carolina. "We had so many guys making plays all over the field," Gabriel said. "When that happens, you see what we can do." UCF bounced back after giving up a long return on the opening kickoff and falling behind less than a minute into the game. Tre Nixon and Marlon Williams each hauled in a pair of TD passes. Showing off its running back depth, UCF got touchdowns on the ground from Greg McCrae, Otis Anderson and Bentavious Thompson. Gabriel, a left-hander from Hawaii who claimed the starting job early in his freshman year, is the one who makes the fast-paced offense go. - Central Florida Football

  In announcing his decision to return for his senior season in January, Lenoir said he wanted to improve on "maturity, growing as a leader and off coverage," which was a reference to the 81-yard touchdown he gave up on third-and-16 in Oregon's loss to Arizona State last season. Lenoir becomes the second Oregon player to opt out of the 2020-21 college football season and declare for the draft in as many days, joining offensive lineman Penei Sewell. His departure leaves Oregon with 84 scholarship players and backup corners Mykael Wright and DJ James, who were expected to take over for Lenoir and Thomas Graham Jr. after this season, will vie for the starting job. - The Oregonian

  The best offensive lineman in college football is moving on to the NFL without playing his junior season. Penei Sewell, Oregon's starting left tackle and the reigning Outland Trophy winner, announced he is opting out of the 2020-21 season to prepare to for the 2021 NFL Draft. Sewell, a unanimous All-American last season, is widely projected as a top five pick in next year's draft. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Sewell did not allow a sack last season, had eight games without allowing a pressure, hit or hurry and allowed just seven quarterback pressures in 466 pass-blocking snaps en route to becoming the third unanimous All-American in Oregon program history. He was the first sophomore offensive lineman and first Duck to ever win the Outland Trophy. - Oregon Live

  The 2020 Bo Nix looks like a "whole different person." Auburn wide receiver Anthony Schwartz has seen a noticeable change in the way Nix holds himself from his freshman to sophomore year. Nix has always looked composed, Schwartz said. In his first college game ever, he was able to lead the team on a last-minute drive that led to a comeback win over Oregon. His composure led to people across the nation remarking on how cool and collected he was. But this year, Schwartz said Nix looks confident, comfortable and relaxed on top of cool and collected. The confidence, which has grown through the 2019 season and the 2020 offseason, is evident at practice as Nix's voice carries itself through drills and scrimmages, shouting both directions and playful trash talk. "He's talking way more," Schwartz said. "He's been going back and forth with the defense, just talking talking. But it's just all fun for him."

Nix isn't just talking to the defense for fun, he's also taking command of the entire team. Wide receiver Eli Stove said Nix has always been vocal, but now he's also a leader. He's speaking up for both the offense and the defense, saying "everything he's got to say." The defense has taken note. Linebacker K.J. Britt, who is the "quarterback" for the opposite side of the ball and one of the leaders on the defense, sees Nix play with the confidence born from "knowing that he's the quarterback here at Auburn University." Britt can see that Nix has settled into his offense and is taking pride in it. He's out there helping coach his teammates. Nix is able to be that type of leader, one who coaches teammates and directs the players around him, because he has gained a new level of experience and knowledge of the game. - Birmingham News

  Dillon Gabriel burst onto the college football scene last season, setting UCF records for a true freshman quarterback. The southpaw went from a virtual unknown to a household name after earning the starting job during the second game of the 2019 season. As Gabriel prepares for his second season, there's plenty of room for improvement. "Year 1 to Year 2 for a quarterback, there's a ton of growth," UCF coach Josh Heupel said Thursday. "There is every year, but there's a ton of growth there that can happen." Gabriel set the school's single-season record for passing yards with 3,653 while throwing 29 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He led the Knights to a 10-3 mark. Gabriel earned Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Gasparilla Bowl after passing for 260 yards and earning three touchdowns during the Knights' 48-25 win over Marshall.

"He had a really good grasp of what we're doing, but just complete knowledge and control over what's going on," Heupel said. "His ability to check at the line of scrimmage when the play's not right, to understand those checks and to get us into a good play and to change protections. It changes what you're able to do offensively when your quarterback has that kind of command because he can get you out of the bad situations. "Year 1 as a play caller, you're trying to protect him a little bit. We're ultimately still really aggressive but you want to make sure you put him in advantageous situations and try to allow him to feel comfortable." - Orlando Sentinel

  Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell are among 11 players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America first team who are not slated to play this fall. The team was selected by 47 AP poll voters, who were asked to consider all Division I players - even those who had already opted out of the season or whose teams had postponed football. The results show just how much star power will be missing from this pandemic-altered college football season.

Twelve second-team All-Americans will also not play in the fall, including quarterback Justin Fields from defending Big Ten champion and preseason No. 2 Ohio State. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American and Mountain West conferences have decided to try to play football in the second semester. As of now, Fields has given no indication that he won't be with the Buckeyes if they do. Same goes for Sewell, the Outland Trophy winner and potential top-five NFL draft pick, and Oregon teammate Kayvon Thibodeaux, a sophomore defensive end. - AP College Football

  Nix, a former five-star prospect and the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for Auburn in the modern era, is coming off a successful-yet-uneven 2019 campaign. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and led Auburn to a nine-win season that included wins over Oregon in the season opener and rival Alabama in the regular-season finale, but he struggled with consistency while completing just 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,542 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions, including a handful of untimely ones in key losses.

Nix had to shoulder a lot as a true freshman, and he'll have to navigate a retooled offensive line that must replace four starters as well as a new lead running back in the backfield this fall. Still, with the arrival of new offensive coordinator Chad Morris -- who has a decorated track record of success in developing quarterbacks -- and a full year of experience under his belt, Nix should be positioned to take that next step as a sophomore.   The Pac-12 CEO Group voted unanimously to postpone all sport competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year. The decision was made after consultation with athletics directors and with the Pac-12 COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee who expressed concern with moving forward with contact practice. Student-athletes impacted by the postponement will continue to have their scholarships guaranteed. Additionally, the Pac-12 Conference strongly encourages that the NCAA grant students who opt out of competition this academic year an additional year of eligibility. As part of their guaranteed scholarships, they will continue to have university support, including academic advising and tutoring, among other support services. - Pac-12 Conference

  A group of Pac-12 football players say they will not practice or play until their concerns about playing during the COVID-19 pandemic and other racial and economic issues in college sports are addressed. The players posted a statement Sunday on The Players' Tribune website and social media with the hashtag #WeAreUnited and sent out a press release. The release listed the names of 12 Pac-12 players, including Oregon star safety Jevon Holland, and provided a statement from each one.

It says hundreds of players throughout the Pac-12 are concerned about the risks of COVID-19 and that the conference and NCAA lack transparency, uniformity and adequate enforcement infrastructure. The players' list of demands addresses healthy and safety protections related to COVID-19; protection for all college sports programs from being eliminated by budget cuts; racial injustice in college sports; and economic rights and compensation for college athletes, including 50% of each sport’s total conference revenue distributed evenly among athletes in their respective sport. - AP College Football
