  Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons and Oregon tackle Penei Sewell are among 11 players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America first team who are not slated to play this fall. The team was selected by 47 AP poll voters, who were asked to consider all Division I players - even those who had already opted out of the season or whose teams had postponed football. The results show just how much star power will be missing from this pandemic-altered college football season.

Twelve second-team All-Americans will also not play in the fall, including quarterback Justin Fields from defending Big Ten champion and preseason No. 2 Ohio State. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American and Mountain West conferences have decided to try to play football in the second semester. As of now, Fields has given no indication that he won't be with the Buckeyes if they do. Same goes for Sewell, the Outland Trophy winner and potential top-five NFL draft pick, and Oregon teammate Kayvon Thibodeaux, a sophomore defensive end. - AP College Football

  Nix, a former five-star prospect and the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for Auburn in the modern era, is coming off a successful-yet-uneven 2019 campaign. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and led Auburn to a nine-win season that included wins over Oregon in the season opener and rival Alabama in the regular-season finale, but he struggled with consistency while completing just 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,542 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions, including a handful of untimely ones in key losses.

Nix had to shoulder a lot as a true freshman, and he'll have to navigate a retooled offensive line that must replace four starters as well as a new lead running back in the backfield this fall. Still, with the arrival of new offensive coordinator Chad Morris -- who has a decorated track record of success in developing quarterbacks -- and a full year of experience under his belt, Nix should be positioned to take that next step as a sophomore.   The Pac-12 CEO Group voted unanimously to postpone all sport competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year. The decision was made after consultation with athletics directors and with the Pac-12 COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee who expressed concern with moving forward with contact practice. Student-athletes impacted by the postponement will continue to have their scholarships guaranteed. Additionally, the Pac-12 Conference strongly encourages that the NCAA grant students who opt out of competition this academic year an additional year of eligibility. As part of their guaranteed scholarships, they will continue to have university support, including academic advising and tutoring, among other support services. - Pac-12 Conference

  A group of Pac-12 football players say they will not practice or play until their concerns about playing during the COVID-19 pandemic and other racial and economic issues in college sports are addressed. The players posted a statement Sunday on The Players' Tribune website and social media with the hashtag #WeAreUnited and sent out a press release. The release listed the names of 12 Pac-12 players, including Oregon star safety Jevon Holland, and provided a statement from each one.

It says hundreds of players throughout the Pac-12 are concerned about the risks of COVID-19 and that the conference and NCAA lack transparency, uniformity and adequate enforcement infrastructure. The players' list of demands addresses healthy and safety protections related to COVID-19; protection for all college sports programs from being eliminated by budget cuts; racial injustice in college sports; and economic rights and compensation for college athletes, including 50% of each sport’s total conference revenue distributed evenly among athletes in their respective sport. - AP College Football

  2020 MANNING AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Bo Nix, So., Auburn,...Nix became the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for the Tigers since 1946. He went on to set the Auburn freshman record for passing yards (2,542), pass completions (217) and touchdown passes (16) in a season.   The Pac-12 CEO Group today approved the 2020 Conference-only fall schedule for football, which features a 10-game slate and number of features designed to provide maximum flexibility. Additionally, the CEO Group approved competition start dates and preseason practice policies for Conference-only seasons for men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball, and men's & women's cross country. Practice policies and competition in all cases are subject to the approval of public health authorities and medical advice. Return-to-competition plans for each of these sports were determined following extensive consultation with the Pac-12's Medical Advisory Committee. The health and safety of our student-athletes and those connected to Pac-12 sports is our number one priority, and we are prepared to adjust plans if the health situation changes. In addition, the Conference previously announced that Pac-12 student-athletes who choose not to participate in intercollegiate athletics during the coming academic year because of safety concerns about COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their university and will remain in good standing with their team. - Pac-12 Football

  2020 MANNING AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Dillon Gabriel, So., UCF,...Gabriel set the UCF freshman record and ranks fourth overall on UCF's single-season passing list with 3,653 passing yards in 2019. Starting the final 12 games, he led the UCF offense that ranked second nationally in total offense (540.5), fifth in scoring (43.4) and eighth in passing (316.7). Gabriel was fourth nationally in passing yards per completion (15.48) and 13th in passing efficiency (156.9), 13th in passing yards (3,653) and 17th in passing touchdowns (29). He threw at least one touchdown pass in all 13 games last season, with multiple touchdown passes in 10 games. - UCF Football

  Whoever plays the nickel role in Andy Avalos' defense is critically important to making the entire unit function and when it's played to the level Jevon Holland did in 2019 and is capable of in 2020, it makes him one of the most important defenders on any field in college football. Holland had 66 tackles with 4.5 for loss, four interceptions and four pass breakups last season. He is the first player to lead Oregon in interceptions in back-to-back seasons since Jairus Byrd (2006 & 2007) and enters 2020 tied for third nationally among active career leaders with nine picks. He's long, can cover enormous range, has great instincts, has an eye for the ball and the speed to keep up with any player on the field. Simply put, there aren't too many players like Holland anywhere in college football. That's why he's a preseason All-American and was named to four award watch lists.

Holland is also a huge factor on special teams, which is part of why we have him as the top-rated player in our countdown. His 15.25 yards per punt return on 16 returns last season would've ranked sixth nationally had he qualified statistically. He's one of the leaders in the locker room and over the last two months that was only further solidified as Holland was among the current and former athletes leading in public calls for the denaming of Deady Hall and other matters pertaining to social justice. - The Oregonian

  2020 PRESEASON WALTER CAMP FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DL Kayvon Thibodeaux, Oregon,...Highlighted by an FBS-leading seven sacks in the fourth quarter, Thibodeaux broke the Oregon freshman record with a team-high 9.0 sacks in 2019. His sack total was the most by a Pac-12 freshman since 2009 and he also led the Ducks with 14.0 tackles for loss. Thibodeaux's dominance off the edge was clear over the final six games of Oregon's Pac-12 and Rose Bowl championship season with 24 tackles, 10.0 stops for loss and 6.5 sacks over that span.
