  Dillon Gabriel accounted for five touchdowns, including three TD passes to Jacob Harris, and UCF beat South Florida 58-46 on Friday night in the season finale for both teams. Gabriel was 22-of-36 passing for 336 yards and four touchdowns with an interception and scored on a 12-yard run late in the third quarter. Harris finished with five receptions for 110 yards. Greg McCrae had 25 carries for 130 yards and a score and Ben Thompson added 110 yards rushing and two TDs on 16 carries for UCF (6-3, 5-3 American Athletic Conference). Jordan McCloud had 404 yards passing and four touchdowns with no interceptions for the Bulls. Bryce Miller had 11 receptions for 121 yards and two TDs and DeVontres Odoms-Dukes had scoring catches of 23 and 14 yards. Dwayne Boyles intercepted a pass by Gabriel near midfield and three plays later Brian Battie scored on a 1-yard run to trim USF's deficit to 45-38 with 10:10 to play.

The Bulls defense then forced UCF to go three-and-out but, on the next play from scrimmage, Divaad Wilson forced fumble that was recovered by Keenan Hester. Three plays later on fourth-and-7 at the USF 37 - with the Knights clinging to a 7-point lead - Gabriel hit O'Keefe for a 12-yard gain. After USF was penalized for having 12 men on the field, McCrae scored on a 20-yard run to make it 52-38 with 6:34 remaining. UCF, which recovered two Bulls fumbles, went into the game leading the nation with 20 forced turnovers and 11 fumble recoveries.   "Ya'll saw the explosive plays he was making," fellow receiver Johnny Johnson III said on Tuesday. "That's just a result of how he practiced the last two weeks and the work he's put in every day. We've seen it as a whole group and now you saw it on Saturday." Next up for Williams and the No. 9 Ducks (3-0) is Friday's 4:30 p.m. rivalry game against Oregon State at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. The Beavers (1-2) are plenty familiar with Williams, whose transfer saga last fall first led him to Corvallis. After entering the transfer portal two games into the 2019 season, Williams initially signed with the Beavers, who announced his commitment with great fanfare. Two days later, Williams had second thoughts and switched his commitment to Oregon and he was practicing with the team soon after while utilizing his redshirt season.

Last Saturday, Williams got his first start for the Ducks, filling in for Mycah Pittman, who hasn't played since the season-opening win against Stanford. At 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, the Lancaster, Calif., native gives quarterback Tyler Shough an explosive and big downfield target. "It's definitely a huge advantage just because he's got that long framework where you feel like you can just throw a jump ball and put it pretty much high or anywhere outside the body because he's got that radius for sure," said Shough, who is averaging 291 yards and nearly three TDs a game in his first season as a starter, thanks in no small part to the talent of receivers like Williams. "He's just using his size to his advantage, getting out of breaks and getting jump balls," Shough continued. "He's just getting better every day. All of our wideouts are.   Oregon safety Jordan Happle was named the Pac-12 defensive player of the week after leading the Ducks with 11 tackles and returning an interception for a 58-yard touchdown on the final play of the first half. The Boise State graduate transfer, who started against UCLA because Nick Pickett had to sit out the first half due to a targeting penalty at Washington State, is tied with Pickett for the team lead in tackles (17) this season. "For Jordan to jump in here and do what he's done, he's a remarkable young man and he's been resilient in so many ways," said Avalos, who coached Happle at Boise State. "It's never an easy transition, but he's done an unbelievable job, played multiple positions for us back there where we've absolutely just needed it." - Register Guard

  Oregon's defense forced four turnovers that led to 28 points and came up with the game-saving stop on the Bruins' final drive with 19 second left with Sewell watching from the sideline on crutches. After the Ducks improved to 3-0, coach Mario Cristobal was cautiously optimistic the talented true freshman's lower-leg injury was not as serious as it looked. Sewell, who leads the team with three tackles for loss and two sacks, returned to practice on Monday as No. 9 Oregon gears up for Friday's rivalry game at Oregon State. "Noah looks good," Cristobal said. "Looks normal to me." Sewell, the younger brother of Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble against the Bruins before the injury.   Dillon Gabriel threw a pair of touchdown passes to Marlon Williams and Central Florida rolled to a 38-13 victory over Temple on Saturday night. Gabriel was 12 of 22 for 268 yards passing without an interception. Williams had four catches for 102 yards. The duo connected on touchdowns of 23 and 21 yards in the third quarter. Jaylon Robinson finished with four receptions for 113 yards for UCF (5-2, 4-2 American Conference). Greg McCrae had touchdown runs of 7 and 1 yard, and Otis Anderson had a 14-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Tayvon Ruley ran 23 times for 90 yards for Temple (1-5, 1-5). Onasis Neely had a 5-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The Knights have won four straight against the Owls. - AP College Football

  Alabama freshman wide receiver Traeshon Holden was part of an encounter with Baton Rouge, Louisiana police last weekend in which Holden's friend, LSU wide receiver Koy Moore, claimed he was violated by the officers. Moore made the incident public Sunday with a statement posted to Twitter. The Tigers freshman said police officers drew their guns and unzipped his pants looking for weapons, even though Moore said he was not armed. Moore did not mention Holden in his statement, but Holden posted Sunday to Twitter that the officers had "guns in our face" and "didn't care" that Moore played for LSU. Holden's tweet was in response to Tunmise Adeleye, an Alabama recruiting target in the 2021 class, suggesting Moore could have been killed if he did not identify himself as an LSU player.

Moore's attorney, Ryan Thompson, told AL.com on Thursday that he has not been contacted by Nick Saban or anyone at the University of Alabama about Holden's encounter with police. "I want Alabama, the Tide, to know - Coach Saban to know - that this is a good kid," said Thompson, who is not yet representing Holden but has been authorized by his family to speak about his involvement. "He conducted himself as we would expect someone, a law-abiding citizen, to conduct himself. He was very cool, calm and collected. "He was actually trying to defuse the police officers by just complying, agreeing with them. He did nothing wrong." - Birmingham News

  If luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation, then DJ Johnson made his own fortune on Saturday. The Oregon tight end, who converted from defensive end during the spring and was fourth on the depth chart this week, got the opportunity to start due to multiple injuries at the position. Johnson's preparation amounted mostly to having played tight end in high school and practicing during the offseason, though his work with the starting offense only began late in the week after it was clear Hunter Kampmoyer and Cam McCormick would be out of Saturday's season opener. Despite the short time table, Johnson had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown in his first career start to help lead No. 12 Oregon in a 35-14 win over Stanford at Autzen Stadium.

"Some guys just weren't available and DJ was and DJ stepped up, did it in the run game, did it in the pass game, did it in protection as well," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "We asked a lot of a guy that was playing defense a year ago, had a pretty significant injury in the summertime, and just kept chopping wood and kept finding ways to just find work, learn the system, get healthy, and then it showed up tonight with not only with the touchdown, but with some other really significant important plays." Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 258-pound redshirt-junior, said he prepares every day as though he's going to play. "It wasn't nothing really different the first play running through it like we go through in practice every day and we've been going through it since we got the go ahead to start practicing," Johnson said. - The Oregonian

  Oregon's secondary will have it depth tested at Washington State. Ducks starting field safety Verone McKinley III was called for targeting early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against Stanford and disqualified. McKinley, whose helmet hit the face mask of Stanford tight end Tucker Fisk and was called targeting upon a booth review, was disqualified and will miss the first half next week.   If there's a single adjective offensive linemen want most associated with their name it's "tough." It goes with the territory of playing in the trenches. Pass blocking and paving the road in the run game are not for the faint of heart. They're inglorious tasks, moving other 300-pound men against their desired path so that your team can reach its destination. T.J. Bass is good at those things; it's why the 6-foot-5, 318-pound Washington native was a junior college All-American and was ranked the top JUCO guard prospect in the country last year. It's also why his new position used the same term four times in 51 words to describe what Bass brings to Oregon's offensive line.

"He's tough," offensive line coach Alex Mirabal said. "He's tough. (From) up in the Washington area, up there in Deming. He's tough. He's strong. He's a good athlete. If you had a basketball team made out of football players you want to pick him. He's got really good athleticism. He's got really good feet. He's physical. He's tough." Bass enrolled at Oregon in January and immediately began working with the second-team offense during spring practice. It didn't take long into fall camp for Bass to showcase his skills further and put himself in position to be the Ducks' starting left guard. "T.J. Bass is going to be an outstanding football player," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal declared during fall camp. "He is powerful. He's massive. He's smart, tough, diligent, all those things.   Entering his fourth season, Alex Forsyth is naturally one of Oregon's most veteran offensive linemen. He's also one of its most experienced. But those are relative terms for the Ducks this year as they replace the most experienced offensive line in the country, featuring Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, NFL Draft picks Shane Lemieux and Jake Hanson, undrafted free agents Calvin Throckmorton and Brady Aiello and starter Dallas Warmack. Forsyth is the vocal leader of the new starting five, significantly important since he's taking over at center, a position he's never played in a game. Yet only redshirt-senior Sam Poutasi has been at Oregon longer than Forsyth and only redshirt-sophomore Steven Jones has played more snaps, that's that's only 170 compared to 91.

"I think Alex would've started at probably every other school in the country last year," said Ryan Walk, his roommate and fellow offensive linemen. "He was ready to play and if we needed to call on him last year he was going to be absolutely ready to go. I think that's a testament to him as a person and as a player. "He prepares as hard or harder than every single person on this team every single week. Whether he was with the ones, twos or threes he was going into every single game like he needed to start and play 75 snaps. He's carried that over to this year where he's a guy now, he's a leader and he's stepped into that role really well. I think that's really important for our offensive line to have a guy like that." - The Oregonian
