  Oregon's defense forced four turnovers that led to 28 points and came up with the game-saving stop on the Bruins' final drive with 19 second left with Sewell watching from the sideline on crutches. After the Ducks improved to 3-0, coach Mario Cristobal was cautiously optimistic the talented true freshman's lower-leg injury was not as serious as it looked. Sewell, who leads the team with three tackles for loss and two sacks, returned to practice on Monday as No. 9 Oregon gears up for Friday's rivalry game at Oregon State. "Noah looks good," Cristobal said. "Looks normal to me." Sewell, the younger brother of Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble against the Bruins before the injury. He is listed as the co-starter with Dru Mathis at middle linebacker on this week's depth chart. - Register Guard

  Dillon Gabriel threw a pair of touchdown passes to Marlon Williams and Central Florida rolled to a 38-13 victory over Temple on Saturday night. Gabriel was 12 of 22 for 268 yards passing without an interception. Williams had four catches for 102 yards. The duo connected on touchdowns of 23 and 21 yards in the third quarter. Jaylon Robinson finished with four receptions for 113 yards for UCF (5-2, 4-2 American Conference). Greg McCrae had touchdown runs of 7 and 1 yard, and Otis Anderson had a 14-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Tayvon Ruley ran 23 times for 90 yards for Temple (1-5, 1-5).   Alabama freshman wide receiver Traeshon Holden was part of an encounter with Baton Rouge, Louisiana police last weekend in which Holden's friend, LSU wide receiver Koy Moore, claimed he was violated by the officers. Moore made the incident public Sunday with a statement posted to Twitter. The Tigers freshman said police officers drew their guns and unzipped his pants looking for weapons, even though Moore said he was not armed. Moore did not mention Holden in his statement, but Holden posted Sunday to Twitter that the officers had "guns in our face" and "didn't care" that Moore played for LSU. Holden's tweet was in response to Tunmise Adeleye, an Alabama recruiting target in the 2021 class, suggesting Moore could have been killed if he did not identify himself as an LSU player.

Moore's attorney, Ryan Thompson, told AL.com on Thursday that he has not been contacted by Nick Saban or anyone at the University of Alabama about Holden's encounter with police. "I want Alabama, the Tide, to know - Coach Saban to know - that this is a good kid," said Thompson, who is not yet representing Holden but has been authorized by his family to speak about his involvement. "He conducted himself as we would expect someone, a law-abiding citizen, to conduct himself. He was very cool, calm and collected. "He was actually trying to defuse the police officers by just complying, agreeing with them. He did nothing wrong." - Birmingham News

The five-star recruit made his Oregon debut in the first quarter, with his first tackle being for a 2-yard loss.   If luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation, then DJ Johnson made his own fortune on Saturday. The Oregon tight end, who converted from defensive end during the spring and was fourth on the depth chart this week, got the opportunity to start due to multiple injuries at the position. Johnson's preparation amounted mostly to having played tight end in high school and practicing during the offseason, though his work with the starting offense only began late in the week after it was clear Hunter Kampmoyer and Cam McCormick would be out of Saturday's season opener. Despite the short time table, Johnson had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown in his first career start to help lead No. 12 Oregon in a 35-14 win over Stanford at Autzen Stadium.

"Some guys just weren't available and DJ was and DJ stepped up, did it in the run game, did it in the pass game, did it in protection as well," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "We asked a lot of a guy that was playing defense a year ago, had a pretty significant injury in the summertime, and just kept chopping wood and kept finding ways to just find work, learn the system, get healthy, and then it showed up tonight with not only with the touchdown, but with some other really significant important plays." Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 258-pound redshirt-junior, said he prepares every day as though he's going to play. "It wasn't nothing really different the first play running through it like we go through in practice every day and we've been going through it since we got the go ahead to start practicing," Johnson said. - The Oregonian

  Oregon's secondary will have it depth tested at Washington State. Ducks starting field safety Verone McKinley III was called for targeting early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against Stanford and disqualified. McKinley, whose helmet hit the face mask of Stanford tight end Tucker Fisk and was called targeting upon a booth review, was disqualified and will miss the first half next week.   If there's a single adjective offensive linemen want most associated with their name it's "tough." It goes with the territory of playing in the trenches. Pass blocking and paving the road in the run game are not for the faint of heart. They're inglorious tasks, moving other 300-pound men against their desired path so that your team can reach its destination. T.J. Bass is good at those things; it's why the 6-foot-5, 318-pound Washington native was a junior college All-American and was ranked the top JUCO guard prospect in the country last year. It's also why his new position used the same term four times in 51 words to describe what Bass brings to Oregon's offensive line.

"He's tough," offensive line coach Alex Mirabal said. "He's tough. (From) up in the Washington area, up there in Deming. He's tough. He's strong. He's a good athlete. If you had a basketball team made out of football players you want to pick him. He's got really good athleticism. He's got really good feet. He's physical. He's tough." Bass enrolled at Oregon in January and immediately began working with the second-team offense during spring practice. It didn't take long into fall camp for Bass to showcase his skills further and put himself in position to be the Ducks' starting left guard. "T.J. Bass is going to be an outstanding football player," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal declared during fall camp. "He is powerful. He's massive. He's smart, tough, diligent, all those things.   Entering his fourth season, Alex Forsyth is naturally one of Oregon's most veteran offensive linemen. He's also one of its most experienced. But those are relative terms for the Ducks this year as they replace the most experienced offensive line in the country, featuring Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell, NFL Draft picks Shane Lemieux and Jake Hanson, undrafted free agents Calvin Throckmorton and Brady Aiello and starter Dallas Warmack. Forsyth is the vocal leader of the new starting five, significantly important since he's taking over at center, a position he's never played in a game. Yet only redshirt-senior Sam Poutasi has been at Oregon longer than Forsyth and only redshirt-sophomore Steven Jones has played more snaps, that's that's only 170 compared to 91.

"I think Alex would've started at probably every other school in the country last year," said Ryan Walk, his roommate and fellow offensive linemen. "He was ready to play and if we needed to call on him last year he was going to be absolutely ready to go. I think that's a testament to him as a person and as a player. "He prepares as hard or harder than every single person on this team every single week. Whether he was with the ones, twos or threes he was going into every single game like he needed to start and play 75 snaps. He's carried that over to this year where he's a guy now, he's a leader and he's stepped into that role really well. I think that's really important for our offensive line to have a guy like that." - The Oregonian

  As Bo Nix walked the sideline after his final touchdown Saturday, a 91-yarder to Anthony Schwartz that pushed Auburn's lead over LSU to 48-3, the sophomore quarterback got some love from his head coach. A low five from Gus Malzahn as the two passed by each other. It was well deserved. After an up-and-down start to the season, Nix had unquestionably his best game of the year and likely the best game of his Auburn career in leading the Tigers to their 37-point win over the defending national champs. Nix finished 18 of 24 with a season-high 300 passing yards, a game-high 81 rushing yards, four total touchdowns and no turnovers. - Birmingham News

  Bo Nix looked up into the jaws of the LSU defense. He wanted the ball in his hands. He wanted to attack. Nix came to play. Nix pulled the football on an option keeper in that moment, dashing left before he powered through a defender grasping at his shoulder pads, then dove for the pylon to score his third touchdown - undeniable on a stellar day for the sophomore. If he had something to prove, he proved it. "I think it's huge for Auburn to have a big win like that," Nix said. Two weeks after maybe the worst game of his college career at South Carolina, Nix led the Auburn offense to a record-setting beatdown against LSU. He threw for three touchdowns, ran in that hard-earned rushing score in the third quarter to put Auburn up big, then fired a 91-yard touchdown bomb to Anthony Schwartz in the fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on Auburn's statement day.

Nix finished with 381 total yards and four total touchdowns - staring down a rival and a national champion and never flinching. "He got beat up pretty bad two weeks ago, and he's establishing himself as one of the best in our league," Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said of Nix after the game. "I think it's about time people start recognizing that. It's something we can build upon - running the football, play-action shots. He made some really good moves with his feet - and third downs, we won the third-down battle today by quite a bit." Nix threw three interceptions in that loss at South Carolina that Malzahn mentioned, and he's been under the microscope in the public eye ever since. But Saturday he completed 18 of 24 passes for 300 passing yards and three throwing scores while rushing for 81 more yards and another touchdown on 11 carries. And he led the team to score the most points Auburn has ever scored against LSU. - Opelika-Auburn News

  Dillon Gabriel passed for 328 yards and two touchdowns, UCF rushed for another 300-plus and the balanced, high-octane offense swamped Houston 44-21 on Saturday. Gabriel, who leads the nation in yards passing per game, was 19 of 33 for 328 yards with a pair of TD passes to Ryan O'Keefe. Otis Anderson (170 yards rushing), Greg McCrae (107) and Ben Thompson (87) each ran for touchdowns as the Knights (4-2, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) piled up 681 yards of offense. Gabriel has thrown 166 passes without an interception.

Houston (2-2, 2-1) lost for the first time in conference with Clayton Tune throwing two interceptions that resulted in 14 UCF points. Tune was 21-of-41 passing for 263 yards and a touchdown. Tune capped a quick, 82-yard fourth-quarter drive with a touchdown toss and two-point conversion pass, closing to 37-21 with 4:17 remaining. The Cougars onside kick attempt failed, and McCrae made a huge third-and-long conversion with a 20-yard gain that led to Anderson's 28-yard touchdown, icing the game. UCF starting defensive back Antwan Collier did not make the trip.
