Dominic Richardson showed up to Oklahoma State football media day on Saturday with a new tattoo of leaves around his neck. It symbolizes the laurel wreaths worn throughout history by kings, emperors and gods of ancient Greek mythology. And maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but perhaps it also represents Richardson's position as the crown prince of Oklahoma State's running back room.

He's set to take the throne as the Cowboys' feature back when the season begins on Sept. 1. "He's thick enough and physical enough to do that," head coach Mike Gundy said of Richardson's potential to be an every-down back. "He is physical. He's mature. He's been around a while, which is going to help him. He's a different type of runner. He's more of a slasher, he's gonna drop his pads and try to run through somebody and then take off and go. "I don't worry about his attitude. I don't worry about his toughness. We just need him to be durable and to give us 18 carries a game." - Daily Oklahoman

Spencer Sanders looked relaxed as he opened his fifth preseason camp as a Cowboy, and fourth as the starter. That look speaks to his comfort level, not his intentions for the OSU offense. When the season goes live, speed is the key in Sanders' mind. "I like playing with tempo," he said. "I like the defense on their heels. I like to keep them guessing. The more I keep you guessing, the more I keep on your heels, you don't know what to call, you don't know what to say. "The better I can keep you edgy, you've got to make quick play calls because I can move the offense pretty fast." Mike Gundy calls Spencer Sanders a 'magician' Twice already this preseason, head coach Mike Gundy has described Sanders as a "magician" in the Cowboy offense based on his in-depth knowledge of the system as a fifth-year senior. Last year, Gundy called Sanders the Tasmanian Devil of quarterbacks.

The amalgam of those two traits could be the special sauce that gets the Cowboys back to running track meets rather than huddling and milking clock and shortening games. Gundy and Sanders never desired to slow the offense down the past two seasons. But rampant injuries and inexperience at positions like offensive line and wide receiver hindered the pace. If you want to know what they would prefer the offense look like, flip on tape of the second half of the Fiesta Bowl, when Sanders led a rally from 21 points down for a 37-35 win over Notre Dame. Sanders threw the ball a career-high 51 times for 371 yards and four touchdowns, but also rushed for 125 yards in the most magnificent performance of his career. "Spencer can play fast," Gundy said. "That's the advantage we have with him. "Playing fast is the responsibility of the quarterback. If we stay healthy, it gives us an opportunity." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy offered up a new adjective to describe quarterback Spencer Sanders. "He has now become a magician in our offense," Gundy said from the stage on Wednesday at Big 12 Media Days at AT&T Stadium. Magician. Strong word, but not out of bounds for a guy who is entering his fourth year as the Cowboys' starting QB. It's also a bit of ammo for Sanders' vocal detractors, mostly from the social media realm - those who might believe Sanders disappears a little too often. Like, for instance, the last time he was in this stadium, when he threw four interceptions in the 21-16 loss to Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game. Such is life with Sanders, whose inconsistencies early in his career made him a polarizing figure among Cowboy fans. Many support their quarterback. Others find it hard to live with the mistakes.

Sanders knows the haters are out there. "There's gonna be people that still hate me to this day because of that game," Sanders said. "I carry the chip on my shoulder, I put a smile on my face. I wake up and call my mom every day, and I go to work." Sanders made strides in his level of consistency last year. He set career highs for passing yards (2,839), passing touchdowns (20) and rushing yards (668), plus a career low for missed games, sitting out only the opener because of COVID-19 protocols. Prior to last season, he had never gone two consecutive games without a turnover, but did it three times. And he had just two turnovers during a six-game stretch from mid-October to late November when the Cowboys thrust themselves into the College Football Playoff race. "Spencer has been fantastic for us," Gundy said. "He knows (the offense). He can run it fast. He understands. The middle toward the end of last year he started to make really quality decisions in a short amount of time, which is very important in quarterback play in our opinion." - Daily Oklahoman
