  08/10/21 - Cameron BrownrSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-0, 199 (DS#27 CB) + More +

On consecutive plays in a drill early in Ohio State's third preseason practice on Friday, cornerback Cameron Brown knocked the ball out of the grasp of a wide receiver. The pass breakups prompted a shout-out from a staff member who broadcasted the feats on the loudspeakers that surround the practice fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. It felt like affirmation after a long absence. Brown missed most of last season after injuring an Achilles tendon in the Buckeyes' road opener at Penn State and remained limited in spring practices in March and April.

"It's definitely a confidence boost to hear your name yelled and your teammates excited for you," Brown said. His recovery could help a secondary bounce back from an up-and-down stretch in 2020 that saw the Buckeyes rank No. 122 out of 127 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Brown offers experience as he enters his fourth season with the program and makes for an obvious candidate to fill the outside cornerback spot opposite Sevyn Banks, though he has also seen playing time in the slot. "It means everything," defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said. "Cam was playing really well last year. People forget that. He had a good camp. He's playing really well. He's going out there playing nickel, playing man-to-man in some tough situations. It was a heartbreaking injury for him." - Columbus Dispatch

  08/06/21 - Tyler FridayrSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-2, 264 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Ohio State football's young defensive ends may need to make a more immediate impact than expected. Head coach Ryan Day announced after Wednesday's first practice of the preseason that senior defensive end Tyler Friday will miss all of camp and "most" of the season. Day declined to discuss the nature of the injury, saying he had not discussed that with Friday. Friday has started in the past. He recorded seven tackles in five games last season. He projected to serve as veteran depth behind presumed starters Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith. With Friday unavailable, freshmen Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau slide up higher in the rotation, along with another veteran, Javontae Jean-Baptiste. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Palaie Gaoteote, a linebacker who transferred from USC earlier this summer, was on the practice fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center when Ohio State opened its preseason training camp on Wednesday. But the Buckeyes are awaiting clearance before he can step onto the turf for a game when their season begins next month. Coach Ryan Day said they have not yet received a ruling from the NCAA surrounding his eligibility, and at least another week remains before a potential resolution. He's not on scholarship as a result.

Ohio State brought in Gaoteote to help provide additional depth at linebacker after all of last season's starters left and the position was hit hard by injuries in spring practice. He started 14 games over three seasons at USC, more experience than the Buckeyes' returning reserves. Gaoteote went through positions drills during a half-dozen practice periods that were open to reporters, but he is unlikely to see first or second-team reps in team periods until his status is sorted out. "It doesn't make sense," Day said, "because that's wasting reps if he's not available." Day avoided offering much of an early impression on Gaoteote's practice debut, saying it was "too early." - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State signed an agreement with a Florida-based company that will allow players to profit from jersey sales. Ohio State fans will soon be able to buy Buckeye jerseys with the name and number of current players. Ohio State's trademark and licensing services office has signed a group licensing agreement with a Florida-based company, The Brandr Group, that will allow players to use their new name, image and likeness rights to profit from jersey sales. Eventually, the plan is to expand into video games, other apparel, trading cards and bobbleheads. Athletes from all of Ohio State's 36 varsity sports teams will be eligible to opt in. Before NIL rights went into effect last month, retailers were not permitted to sell jerseys with current players' names on them. - Columbus Dispatch

Palaei Gaoteote can participate in team activities for Ohio State, though coach Ryan Day said Friday that it may be a few weeks before his scholarship situation is settled. Day said the transfer linebacker from USC is "paying his own way right now" while Ohio State awaits a resolution from the NCAA regarding his eligibility. Transfers can now play immediately at their new school following an NCAA rules change during the summer. However, Day said the issue did not concern the transfer itself. The only difference right now is whether Gaoteote is on scholarship or considered a walk-on. Gaoteote has been listed in the university directory as a student majoring in Human Development and Family Science since mid-June. Gaoteote recorded 105 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in three seasons at USC. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football's Thayer Munford, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson have been selected as part of the Big Ten's 10-man preseason honors list. The Buckeyes' wide receivers have spent the offseason considered arguably the best tandem in the country following their 2020 production. Olave caught 50 passes for 729 yards and seven touchdowns leading the team in each category. That included reading the 100-yard receiving mark in five of the seven games he played. Wilson caught 43 passes for 723 yards and six touchdowns which was second in each category. He reached the 100-yard mark in four games. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert will attend Big Ten media days in place of star wide receiver Chris Olave, a team spokesman said Tuesday. Olave had been on an earlier list of Buckeyes players who were scheduled to attend media days, which is to be held in Indianapolis on Thursday and Friday. No specifics were given for the switch, though the spokesman said "all is good and there are no issues" with Olave. He participated in a photoshoot at Ohio State on Tuesday following a workout. Ruckert caught 13 passes for 151 yards and five touchdowns and was voted as an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by the league's coaches in 2020 before opting to return for his senior season. - Columbus Dispatch

  07/13/21 - Harry MillerrSr/2024, Ohio State, 6-3, 315 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Harry Miller is expected to replace Josh Myers at center this upcoming season for Ohio State, and he will use the status that gives him to help the needy in Nicaragua. When Ohio State offensive lineman Harry Miller was in middle school, he took a mission trip to Nicaragua with a church group from suburban Atlanta. It left a lasting impression. Getting a glimpse of the country's extreme poverty, he was inspired to return and provide further aid. "As a kid in America, you don't really appreciate how good it is until you go someplace else and you see plastic houses made of scrap cardboard and wood and tin and plastic sheeting that are basically one room with dirt floors and maybe a bed, maybe not," said his mother, Kristina, who accompanied him.

Over the past seven years, Miller has traveled nearly a dozen times to Nicaragua on similar trips. He brought along teammate Tommy Eichenberg as recently as last year, prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. So as it became permissible this month for college athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness, Miller had an idea. He started an online pop-up store selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and baseball caps that feature a logo of his personal brand. The logo includes the letter "H" within a curved shield. All of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to Mission for Nicaragua, a nonprofit for which Miller is one of five board members and which was formed by members of Miller's church group. - Columbus Dispatch

  07/06/21 - Steele ChambersrSr/2024, Ohio State, 6-1, 226 (DS#15 OLB) + More +

A social media post Monday night is the most official word so far that Ohio State football's linebacker corps has two new members. Both former running back Steele Chambers and USC transfer Palaie Gaoteote were included in a series of photos from a gathering of the linebackers posted by the OSU football Twitter account. Chambers' potential move to linebacker has long been rumored. However, he remained a running back by all appearances through spring practice.

OSU running backs coach Tony Alford on March 23 shot down that speculation, saying he had not discussed that with Chambers' family or coach Ryan Day. Yet Chambers was seen working with linebackers at one of OSU's day camps last month. The 6-1, 220-pound Chambers averaged 7.89 yards over 21 carries across his first two seasons. The abundance of depth at running back, though, assured someone would be left out. It remains to be seen whether Chambers has a more direct route to playing time at linebacker, though a fit at the hybrid bullet position might make the most sense. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  07/02/21 - Jaylen HarrisrSr/2022, Ohio State, 6-4, 215 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Wide receivers Jaylen Harris and Elijah Gardiner are no longer members of the Ohio State football program. Both players were recently removed from the Buckeyes' online roster. A team spokesperson said both players graduated and opted to move on. Lettermen Row reported earlier this month that neither were still playing football. Last spring, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said Harris "had his best offseason" and complimented his work ethic and maturity. Harris, though, played sparingly in 2020 and did not have a reception. The Buckeyes' receiving corps saw an influx of young talent in the 2020 and 2021 classes. Gardiner's only career reception came in 2019. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State apparently has added a former five-star linebacker from the University of Southern California as a transfer. Though Ohio State has not confirmed the addition of Palaie Gaoteote IV, he is listed in the OSU student directory as a human development and family science major. Gaoteote attended powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, which produced current OSU defensive tackle Haskell Garrett. According to Gaoteote's USC bio, Garrett is his cousin. Gaoteote's addition would give Ohio State another option at linebacker. The Buckeyes' top four linebackers from 2020 - Tuf Borland, Baron Browning, Pete Werner and Justin Hilliard - graduated. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/18/21 - Chris OlaveSr/2022, Ohio State, 6-1, 185 (DS#3 WR) + More +

Ohio State football's annual preseason All-American haul has officially begun. Living up to those accolades, though, has not always been as easy. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - one of the five organizations whose postseason list determines consensus and unanimous All-Americans - named receiver Chris Olave, offensive lineman Thayer Munford and defensive tackle Haskell Garrett to its preseason first team list. Olave, a senior, led Ohio State in receptions (50), receiving yards (729) and touchdowns (seven) last season. He and junior teammate Garrett Wilson are considered by many the best receiver duo in the country. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Ohio bill granting name, image and likeness income rights to college athletes, including those at Ohio State, passed out of committee Tuesday and moves on to the full senate. The Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee unanimously approved SB 187. State Senator Niraj Antani, Republican of Miamisburg, introduced the bill on May 24. Ohio State coach Ryan Day attended Tuesday's committee meeting and testified in favor of the bill. If approved by the full senate, the bill moves on to the House of Representatives for the same process. If approved by the house, the bill goes to Governor Mike DeWine for signature into law.

The legislative process around the bill has come with true urgency. Several other states had already passed NIL compensation bills set to go into effect on July 1 before the Ohio bill was introduced. The NCAA has not passed its own legislation to govern the issue. U.S. senators and representatives - including former OSU football player Anthony Gonzalez - have introduced bills and held hearings. "Today, we took a big step forward in advancing the rights of student athletes in Ohio," Antani said in a news release. "This bill restores the right of each student athlete to their own name, image, and likeness. I look forward to working to pass this through the full Senate." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/08/21 - Noah RugglesrSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-2, 190 (DS#999 K) + More +

Ohio State found another potential replacement for kicker Blake Haubeil on Wednesday when graduate transfer Noah Ruggles announced he had committed to the Buckeyes. Ruggles handled placekicking at North Carolina in 2019 as a sophomore, but lost the role last season to Grayson Atkins, who had transferred from Furman, and did not attempt a field goal. He made 19 of 27 field-goal attempts in 2019, including a career long of 49 yards. - Columbus Dispatch

  05/25/21 - *Garrett WilsonJr/2022, Ohio State, 6-0, 184 (DS#1 WR) + More +

A Miamisburg state legislator is proposing a bill making it legal - for the first time in history - for Ohio's college athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness, regardless of what NCAA rules say. Such opportunities could include sponsorships, endorsements, social media influencing, private lessons and autograph sessions, under the bill proposed by Republican state Sen. Niraj Antani. A bedrock of the NCAA's amateurism identity has been that its athletes do not profit financially from their status as athletes. Momentum for reform has been building for years, though, and similar bills already passed in other states - coupled with the inaction of the NCAA - forced the hand of Ohio and other states that could be left behind.

Antani expressed confidence the bill will pass despite the fast six-week timetable for its effective date of July 1. That date is not coincidental. Five other states - including some with college football powerhouses - have name, image and likeness laws set to take effect on July 1. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and New Mexico have already passed laws that take effect that date. A bill making its way through the Texas state legislature could also go into effect on that date. Other states that passed laws that go into effect later are reportedly considering moving up their effective dates as well. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
