On consecutive plays in a drill early in Ohio State's third preseason practice on Friday, cornerback Cameron Brown knocked the ball out of the grasp of a wide receiver. The pass breakups prompted a shout-out from a staff member who broadcasted the feats on the loudspeakers that surround the practice fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. It felt like affirmation after a long absence. Brown missed most of last season after injuring an Achilles tendon in the Buckeyes' road opener at Penn State and remained limited in spring practices in March and April.

"It's definitely a confidence boost to hear your name yelled and your teammates excited for you," Brown said. His recovery could help a secondary bounce back from an up-and-down stretch in 2020 that saw the Buckeyes rank No. 122 out of 127 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Brown offers experience as he enters his fourth season with the program and makes for an obvious candidate to fill the outside cornerback spot opposite Sevyn Banks, though he has also seen playing time in the slot. "It means everything," defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said. "Cam was playing really well last year. People forget that. He had a good camp. He's playing really well. He's going out there playing nickel, playing man-to-man in some tough situations. It was a heartbreaking injury for him." - Columbus Dispatch
