The Ohio bill granting name, image and likeness income rights to college athletes, including those at Ohio State, passed out of committee Tuesday and moves on to the full senate. The Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee unanimously approved SB 187. State Senator Niraj Antani, Republican of Miamisburg, introduced the bill on May 24. Ohio State coach Ryan Day attended Tuesday's committee meeting and testified in favor of the bill. If approved by the full senate, the bill moves on to the House of Representatives for the same process. If approved by the house, the bill goes to Governor Mike DeWine for signature into law.The legislative process around the bill has come with true urgency. Several other states had already passed NIL compensation bills set to go into effect on July 1 before the Ohio bill was introduced. The NCAA has not passed its own legislation to govern the issue. U.S. senators and representatives - including former OSU football player Anthony Gonzalez - have introduced bills and held hearings. "Today, we took a big step forward in advancing the rights of student athletes in Ohio," Antani said in a news release. "This bill restores the right of each student athlete to their own name, image, and likeness. I look forward to working to pass this through the full Senate." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
