Saturday was never in the plans for Larry Rountree III. Once a three-star football prospect from North Carolina, Rountree came to Missouri with a simple set of goals, none of which included the NFL draft. "My mom and dad, they were just trying to get me into college. The NFL was not a dream," he said Saturday. "It was, 'OK, get in college, get your degree, do what you're supposed to do, take care of your business and don't embarrass our name.' That was the goal. So, this is just a blessing." Four years and nearly 4,000 rushing yards later, Rountree became Mizzou's final NFL draft pick of the weekend, going to the Los Angeles Chargers in the sixth round. Former Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton is staying in the Show-Me State. Bolton was drafted No. 58 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night during the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The Tigers' highest-valued 2021 draft prospect was expected by several online projections to be picked either late in the first round or in the early-to-mid range of the second round. "I feel like I can play in the NFL and be a high-caliber player," Bolton said after Missouri's pro day last month. "So it's about proving myself right every day, believing in myself and trying to get myself in the best situation possible." The Frisco, Texas, native's stock took a major jump in 2019, starting beside Cale Garrett for Missouri. A two-interception performance against West Virginia set the table for a phenomenal year. The 5-foot-11, 237-pound Bolton earned first-team all-Southeastern Conference honors after leading the league with 8.9 tackles per game (107 total, 7.5 tackles for loss) and eight pass deflections in 12 games. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri running back Larry Rountree has found a new home on the West Coast. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday with the No. 198 overall selection in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Rountree finished his Missouri career as the school's all-time leading rusher among running backs with 3,720 yards and 40 touchdowns. Rountree is second on the Tigers' all-time list behind quarterback Brad Smith, who finished with 4,193 rushing yards. "It's crazy because honestly, me coming to college, that (rushing yards record) was never a goal. I never would have thought in a million years that I would be third," Rountree said after passing Brock Olivo for third on the all-time rushing list after Missouri's win over Kentucky in October. "But I knew coming here as long as I ran for my teammates and my mom, then everything will take care of itself."

At the MU pro day in March, Rountree participated in running back drills and also took passes as a wide receiver - a move he hopes helps him stand out among his competition. "I would say I've always been an underdog," Rountree said. "Coming out of high school, I was a two-star. So I've always had a permanent chip on my shoulder...Guys weren't talking about me coming out of high school. Nobody knew about me. That's why it's surprising what I did here at Mizzou. "But still at the end of the day, I can't control how people talk about me. The only thing I can control is how I play...No matter what, if you think another guy's better than me, at the end of the day, I know what I can do. After putting together the kind of season that has come along only once over the last decade-plus, Jalen Catalon had one thing on his mind during the offseason. That was to become a more consistent player, he said Tuesday following Arkansas' 10th practice of the spring. Despite being the first SEC freshman since Tennessee's Eric Berry in 2007 to finish with at least 86 tackles and three interceptions, he's driven to be better. He totaled 99 tackles, broke up 4 passes and forced 2 fumbles although he missed the equivalent of one game in a 10-game All-SEC schedule due to targeting disqualifications.

Catalon, too, was a first-team Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, the first Razorback to earn the nod since Dre Greenlaw in 2015. But he has continued to work as if he was snubbed by voters. "I feel like I led more just by the way I play, but I realized that people pick up off my energy, and I feel like my words hold power to our defense and they listen," Catalon said. "I'm trying to be more of a leader as far as like me communicating that and showing my actions, and just being a consistent player to help my defense. "I feel like I made a lot of plays, but there were also a lot of plays I left out there last year in watching film with my coach this past year." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Of the nine professional hopefuls to compete in the Mizzou Pro Day on Monday, six were on coach Eli Drinkwitz's Missouri football roster this past season. Two others - wide receivers Johnathon Johnson and Jonathan Nance - last played for Missouri in 2019. Joining the eight Tiger alums was Zach Davidson, a former Division II All-American tight end at Central Missouri. Representatives from 29 of the 32 NFL teams converged at the Devine Pavilion to watch on-field drills and the bench press. They made the walk into the Mizzou Athletics Training Complex for other combine-like exercises. Many scouts came to Columbia to get an up-close look at former Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton, a projected first- or second-round NFL Draft selection. Bolton told reporters Monday he's had Zoom meetings with about 75% of league teams.

"I feel like I can play in the NFL and be a high-caliber player," Bolton said. "So it's about proving myself right every day, believing in myself and trying to get myself in the best situation possible." Bolton's on-field workout was led by Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky, who spent several minutes talking with Bolton's family and his agent, Tommy Condon. The Steelers choose at No. 24 and 55 in the draft, set for April 29 to May 1. On the heels of a turnaround season, the University of Tulsa football program has set its four-week spring practice period. The Hurricane will open spring practice March 14 and continue through April 13. A decision as to whether to play the annual spring game has not been made. Tulsa is coming off of a 2020 season in which the Hurricane played in the American Athletic Conference Championship game, the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl and finished the season with a 6-3 record. The Golden Hurricane returns nine starters on offense, 10 on defense and all of its specialists. Three other players who would have been starters but missed the 2020 season are expected back. The Tigers picked up a commitment from Rice linebacker Blaze Alldredge, who recorded 214 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, six sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 30 career games with the Owls. Alldredge entered the transfer portal Saturday and should have two years of eligibility remaining per NCAA relief despite being a graduate transfer. Eli Drinkwitz continues to add playmakers to his Missouri offense, most recently landing a familiar name from the NCAA transfer portal. Former Ohio State wide receiver Mookie Cooper, a 2020 four-star recruit from Trinity Catholic High School in St. Louis, committed to join the Tigers, Cooper announced Tuesday on social media. Cooper was rated the No. 2 prospect in Missouri in the 2020 recruiting class by Rivals.com when he signed with the Buckeyes and the nation's 58th-ranked player overall. Cooper barely gave Mizzou much consideration at the time and enrolled early at Ohio State last January.
