  05/04/21 - RB Larry Rountree IIISr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 211 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Saturday was never in the plans for Larry Rountree III. Once a three-star football prospect from North Carolina, Rountree came to Missouri with a simple set of goals, none of which included the NFL draft. "My mom and dad, they were just trying to get me into college. The NFL was not a dream," he said Saturday. "It was, 'OK, get in college, get your degree, do what you're supposed to do, take care of your business and don't embarrass our name.' That was the goal. So, this is just a blessing." Four years and nearly 4,000 rushing yards later, Rountree became Mizzou's final NFL draft pick of the weekend, going to the Los Angeles Chargers in the sixth round. Earlier Saturday, three Mizzou teammates heard their names called during the final day of the draft, bringing MU's three-day total to five, the program's biggest draft class since 2015. - Post-Dispatch

  05/02/21 - RB Larry Rountree IIISr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 211 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Missouri running back Larry Rountree has found a new home on the West Coast. The Raleigh, North Carolina, native was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday with the No. 198 overall selection in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Rountree finished his Missouri career as the school's all-time leading rusher among running backs with 3,720 yards and 40 touchdowns. Rountree is second on the Tigers' all-time list behind quarterback Brad Smith, who finished with 4,193 rushing yards. "It's crazy because honestly, me coming to college, that (rushing yards record) was never a goal. I never would have thought in a million years that I would be third," Rountree said after passing Brock Olivo for third on the all-time rushing list after Missouri's win over Kentucky in October. "But I knew coming here as long as I ran for my teammates and my mom, then everything will take care of itself."

At the MU pro day in March, Rountree participated in running back drills and also took passes as a wide receiver - a move he hopes helps him stand out among his competition. "I would say I've always been an underdog," Rountree said. "Coming out of high school, I was a two-star. So I've always had a permanent chip on my shoulder...Guys weren't talking about me coming out of high school. Nobody knew about me. That's why it's surprising what I did here at Mizzou. "But still at the end of the day, I can't control how people talk about me. The only thing I can control is how I play...No matter what, if you think another guy's better than me, at the end of the day, I know what I can do. So it's more a fact of how I take it." - Columbia Daily Tribune

2020 ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): RB Larry Rountree, Missouri,...Rountree earned all-conference honors for the first time in his storied career as he has produced 972 rushing yards on 209 attempts with 14 TDs in his senior campaign to become the first Tiger running back to earn all-conference honors since Henry Josey in 2011. His 14 rushing TDs rank third in the SEC and seventh nationally, while his 972 rushing yards rank fourth in the SEC and 13th nationally. The Tiger tailback will go down as one of the most prolific rushers in school history, as he currently ranks second in career rushing yards (3,720), rushing TDs (40) and 100-yard games (14). - Missouri Football

After surrendering the lead in the most excruciating way possible, Missouri drove the field in the final 43 seconds and beat Arkansas 50-48 on Saturday when Harrison Mevis made a 32-yard field goal as time expired. The Tigers (5-3) erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead, only to give it up in the final minute. Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson threw a touchdown pass to Mike Woods to cut Missouri's lead to 48-47, and coach Sam Pittman elected to go for a 2-point conversion. Jefferson's pass bounced off the chest of linebacker Jamal Brooks and landed in Woods' arms. But Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak had plenty of time to dissect Arkansas' reeling defense and set up Mevis for his fifth field goal of the day. Larry Rountree rushed 27 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers, and Tyler Badie added six carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns - both in the fourth quarter. Bazelak completed 32 of 49 passes for 380 yards. Keke Chism caught six passes for 113 yards. Jefferson started in place of the injured Feleipe Franks for Arkansas (3-6). He completed 18 of 33 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown. Treylon Burks caught 10 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. Trelon Smith carried 26 times for 172 yards and three touchdowns. - Missouri/AP College Football

Sarah Fuller made history, but her barrier-breaking kickoff was the only highlight for Vanderbilt as Missouri dominated the Commodores 41-0 on Saturday. Fuller became the first woman to participate in a Power 5 conference football game when she kicked off to start the second half. Fuller delivered a low kick that bounced to the 35-yard line, where Missouri pounced on it. She never got the chance to attempt a PAT or field goal, as the Tigers (4-3) rarely allowed the Commodores (0-8) to cross midfield in the Southeastern Conference game.

Larry Rountree rushed 21 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Connor Bazelak completed 30 of 37 passes for 318 yards. Running back Tyler Badie had seven catches for 102 yards and scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. True freshman quarterback Brady Cook got his first snaps of the year in mop-up time and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Damon Hazelton. Vanderbilt gained just 196 total yards against a stingy Missouri defense that has held three of its last four opponents to 10 points or less. Ken Seals completed 11 of 19 passes for 79 yards. Keyon Henry-Brooks rushed 15 times for 64 yards but lost a fumble in Missouri territory to end a rare promising drive for the Commodores to open the third quarter. - Missouri/AP College Football

  11/24/20 - RB Larry Rountree IIISr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 211 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Missouri running back Larry Rountree III struggled getting past the line of scrimmage through most of the first half, but his longest run made history. An 11-yard dash off the left side gave Rountree 19 yards for the night, just what he needed to pass former Tiger running back Zack Abron for second place on the school's career rushing list. Rountree began the season sixth on the list and made his surge with consecutive 100-yard games against Louisiana State and Kentucky. By halftime, his career total stood at 3,216 yards, second only to former Mizzou quarterback Brad Smith in team history. Smith, the Tigers' QB from 2002-05, has a safe lead for the all-time record with 4,289 career yards. Without two regular starters along the offensive line, the Tigers rarely controlled the line of scrimmage and only averaged only 2.9 yards per carry. Rountree finished with 58 yards on 21 attempts. - Post-Dispatch

On the verge of becoming the most prolific running back in Mizzou history, Larry Rountree III couldn't get untracked against the Gators. Coming off consecutive 100-yard rushing games, Rountree finished with just 36 yards on 14 carries. The senior co-captain came into the game needing 54 yards to match Zack Abron for No. 2 on MU's all-time list and the most among running backs in the program's history. Rountree was effective in the passing game, catching a team-high six passes for 26 yards. - Post-Dispatch

Larry Rountree carried 37 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns, leading Missouri to a grinding 20-10 victory over Kentucky on Saturday. The Tigers (2-2 Southeastern Conference) played stingy defense and converted enough third- and fourth-down plays to control the ball with lengthy drives. Missouri held the ball for 43 minutes and ran 56 more plays than the Wildcats (2-3). Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak completed 21 of 30 passes for 201 yards, and Jalen Knox caught five passes for 60 yards. The Tigers converted 10 of 20 third downs and 4 of 5 fourth downs. Defense was the only thing keeping Kentucky in the game early, as the Wildcats managed only 65 total yards in the first half. At the end of the half, Kentucky held Missouri out of the end zone on two plays from the 1-yard line, causing the Tigers to settle for an 18-yard Harrison Mevis field goal and a 10-3 halftime lead. - Missouri/AP College Football

One of Drinkwitz's biggest confessions in his postgame press conference was he needs to get his senior running back more involved. Yes, Rountree didn't make a huge impact in the first half, but once he found his rhythm in the second half, he picked up bunches of yards that kept the Crimson Tide honest. In turn, Rountree's efforts opened up the entire offense. Rountree finished the game with 14 carries for 67 yards and passed Henry Josey for fifth all-time in rushing yards at Missouri. If the senior from Raleigh, North Carolina, gets more involved in the offense sooner in games, it could be a positive sign for the season to come. "He's a fighter," Drinkwitz said of Rountree. "He runs tough. He runs physical. It means the world to him, and I've got to do a better job feeding him." - Columbia Daily Tribune

If you can forget for a moment that COVID-19 still threatens to sabotage the upcoming college football season and instead focus on the storylines that could command attention on the field this fall, Missouri's Larry Rountree III is a strong starting point. The senior running back might be the most important player on new coach Eliah Drinkwitz's 2020 roster. With a quarterback situation in flux and a shortage of established wide receivers and tight ends, Rountree is the closest thing to a sure bet in Drinkwitz's collection of playmakers, especially given the Tigers only had three spring practices before the coronavirus pandemic shut down all team activities three months ago.

With a passing game short on continuity and chemistry, a proven running back of Rountree's caliber is a treasured asset. With 2,748 rushing yards over three seasons, Rountree ranks sixth all time on Mizzou's career rushing list with a strong chance to become the program's most prolific rushing back in team history - by October. Here's the good news for Rountree: In Drinkwitz's brief but successful career calling plays, he's always had a productive, high-volume running back. "Obviously we know the importance of that position and what it means and how it balances," Drinkwitz said, "especially for a new quarterback so that he doesn't have to feel like every play he has to be 100 percent right. He can turn around and hand off to the tailback and he can get you yards." - Post-Dispatch

  09/15/19 - RB Larry Rountree IIISr/2021, Missouri, 5-11, 211 (DS#13 RB) + More +

After a humbling performance in the season opener, Missouri's defense has taken out its frustration on two straight opponents, including a 50-0 shutout of Southeast Missouri on Saturday night. The Tigers (2-1) held the Redhawks (1-2) to 94 total yards. "Our defense played with good urgency, made things happen and got off the field on third downs, put them in position behind the sticks most of the night, controlled the line of scrimmage and were really aggressive in our coverage," Missouri coach Barry Odom said.

The Tigers were haunted by missed tackles in their season-opening loss at Wyoming. They rebounded by holding West Virginia to just 171 yards and seven points last week before dominating SEMO. For the second straight week, Missouri scored a defensive touchdown. This time, linebacker Cale Garrett intercepted a Daniel Santacaterina pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. That was part of an early all-phases assault by Missouri. The Tigers opened a 27-0 first-quarter lead. In addition to Garrett's score, Larry Rountree III rushed for a 3-yard touchdown, Kelly Bryant floated a 3-yard TD pass to tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and Richaud Floyd took a punt 71 yards to the end zone. Rountree finished with 142 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Bryant completed 15 of 20 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown. - Missouri/AP College Football
