  05/08/21 - Brandon TurnagerSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-0, 190 (DS#87 CB) + More +

Another one of Alabama's backup cornerbacks is set to transfer. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Turnage entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday afternoon, AL.com has learned. The former four-star recruit was a third-team cornerback during the Crimson Tide's spring game in April after playing in just three games as a reserve last season. The Turnage news comes two weeks after fellow backup cornerback Ronald Williams entered the transfer portal. - Birmingham News

  04/25/21 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

As the Cowboys wrapped up their first week of spring practice, the message to Spencer Sanders - who is in his fourth year in the program and third as starting quarterback - was clear. "We want to be a top-10 passing team in the country," OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. "Plain and simple. So we've got to be able to throw the football. And that's the direction it's going." Spencer Sanders' passing statistics were remarkably similar from 2019 to 2020. In both seasons, Sanders completed exactly 155 of 247 passes, for 2,065 yards in 2019 and 2,007 yards in 2020, with a TD/interception ratio of 16/11 in 2019 and 14/8 in 2020. Holding the MVP trophy from the Cheez-It Bowl in December, Spencer Sanders had firmed up his grip on Oklahoma State's starting quarterback job. Sanders turned in his best performance of the year in the season's final game, showing the consistency, accuracy and game management the Cowboys needed from their leader. - Daily Oklahoman

  04/24/21 - Spencer SandersrSr/2024, Mississippi, 6-1, 209 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Spencer Sanders will close the door on his third year in the OSU program with the Cowboys' spring game at noon on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. But Sanders has missed out on some key developmental periods during his career. He missed the final six weeks of his redshirt freshman season because of a thumb injury, and was robbed of spring ball last year. Then he missed a few more weeks at the start of the 2020 season with an ankle injury. With all that taken into account, Sanders is in that wheelhouse of two-and-a-half to three years where Gundy says the quarterback should start to solve the Rubik's Cube.

"I'm seeing things now that I didn't see from him last year," Gundy said of Sanders. "Now, he just needs to continue to do it, we need to keep things simple, let him play fast and do what he does. Let him roll." Adding to Sanders' comfort in the offense, he's working with the same coordinator and quarterback coach in consecutive seasons for the first time in his OSU career. So rather than building relationships and learning a new voice, he's rolling forward with the momentum he gained toward the end of last season - particularly in the Cowboys' 37-34 win over Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl. "I've been through three coaches, so I've been through different technique, different footwork," Sanders said. "I would say from fall camp to spring ball, I feel like I'm a lot more comfortable. I feel like the offense is a lot more comfortable. I feel like we're moving good and we're knowing each other." - Daily Oklahoman

  04/18/21 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

One of the most fascinating storylines to come out of spring practice has been J.J. Pegues's role on the team. After making a splash as a freshman tight end, Pegues came into spring listed in the same spot. But his new coaches felt he could make a difference elsewhere on the field and started moving him around all three units. He officially stayed a tight end through the first half of spring but made the move to defensive tackle once they came back from their weeklong break. The tight ends decided not to kick him out of their group chat, but Pegues is now officially under the wing of Colby Wooden and the other defensive linemen. He's still at the very start of his transition, but keep an eye out for how that natural ability translates to the defensive line. - Birmingham News

  04/13/21 - Jake SpringerrSr/2022, Mississippi, 6-0, 201 (DS#46 SS) + More +

A 6-foot, 205-pound transfer defensive back from Navy, Jake Springer sat out last season but is working with the first-team defense at safety and nickelback this spring. Springer told the media he's comfortable at those positions and thinks his versatility is a major asset, which is something Jones agreed with. "He really could play everywhere," Jones said. "He's a guy that could play the run, could cover and be a ball hawk. He's definitely a vital piece in this defense. I look forward to playing with him this year." It's hard to separate the two junior college defensive line transfers from one another. Both missed time early in camp. But returned to make impressive sacks in two-minute drills in last Saturday's scrimmage. Both, according to Kiffin, are rotating between inside and outside positions. "Obviously everybody was wondering about the new cats that came in," Springer said. "They've been getting after it. I think all of our defensive line really has a confidence. We've got them on the back end, and they can go do those things." - The Clarion Ledger

  04/06/21 - Lakia HenryrSr/2022, Mississippi, 5-11, 231 (DS#33 ILB) + More +

As high as the expectations are for Ole Miss football in 2021, senior linebacker Lakia Henry believes they should be higher. "It bothers me," Henry said. "We should be at the top 10, top 5 in my opinion. And we've got the people to do it. We just have to do it." There are no official rankings of football teams five months before the start of the season, of course. But after Ole Miss won four of its last five games to end 2020, including an Outback Bowl victory over a top-10 opponent, the Rebels' program is engulfed by hype. Or at the very least, intrigue. - The Clarion Ledger

  03/29/21 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said players of Pegues' ability and short-area burst are typically playing on the defensive line. Bobo complimented the way tight ends coach Brad Bedell has prepared Pegues so far this spring, and the first-year play-caller explained how different the situation is for Pegues this year compared to last year. "He was just the off-the-ball guy last year. He's been off the ball and on the ball for us. This is new stuff for him, but he is athletic and he's over 300 pounds," Bobo said. "He's going to be able to move some people at the point of attack, and he's going to be able to get out and be able to run routes and stretch the field vertically, too. He can do that. The thing for him is just getting him in shape to where he can do it for a whole game. "I've been pleased with J.J., how he's worked. You're right - he's the true definition of an athletic big man." Pegues made one of the highlight-worthy plays of Saturday's open practice when he sent linebacker Zakoby McClain flying on a block. While Harsin pointed out the Tigers weren't "live" in that practice, he added that Pegues showed some of his strengths during Thursday's scrimmage. - Birmingham News

  03/28/21 - JJ PeguesrSr/2025, Mississippi, 6-3, 309 (DS#36 DT) + More +

Auburn offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has never seen anyone quite like J.J. Pegues. In his 21-year career, Bobo has coached and coached against players who have an impressive combination of size, athleticism and quickness, but all of those players played along the defensive line. They were all guys people said "He can play tight end, he's that' athletic," Bobo said, but none of them ever actually did. Pegues, however, is already a real-life tight end. Pegues can contribute at other positions, as he demonstrated during his freshman season. His versatility allows him to run the ball, catch the ball, and even throw the ball.

He had 14 yards on five carries, and while those aren't huge numbers, several of them were on third-and-short, and he helped the team move the chains. He had one completion on one attempt, finishing with a passer rating of 100. And he made seven catches for 57 yards. "He's the true definition of an athletic big man," Bobo said in his first press conference as an Auburn coach. The numbers alone don't show just what a wonder this 6-foot-3, 308-pound tight end is. Yes, he rushed for 14 yards, but those gains included spin moves and hurdles. Ok, he made seven catches, but he leapt and dove to secure the ball. And some of his best highlights were ones that never show up in the stat sheet - like his ability to destroy an opponent with his blocking. - Birmingham News

  03/26/21 - *Elijah MooreJr/2021, Mississippi, 5-10, 178 (DS#5 WR) + More +

Ole Miss wide receiver Elijah Moore showed off his athleticism at his pro day Thursday. Moore ran his 40-yard dash in 4.32 seconds on his only attempt. He also ran his short shuttle in 4.00 seconds and finished the three-cone drill in 6.65 seconds. Moore's 40-yard dash time would've been the third-fastest at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine and his three-cone time would've been the fastest of any wide receiver since 2018. "I did well," Moore said. "I wanted to do more on the bench. But the 40 was around the area I wanted and the routes, I felt like I was very efficient. I'm just thankful. I can't thank God enough." Moore also ran routes and caught passes from former Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly. Moore also participated in running back drills and in punt return drills to show off the diversity of his skill set.

In 2020, Moore was voted first-team All-America by the Associated Press after catching 86 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games. Draft analysts widely vary on Moore's stock, ranking him anywhere between a first- and fourth-round pick. "Of course I have dreams and aspirations to go in the first round," Moore said. "Of course I want to go to the right position. But I've been praying a lot on top of that that whatever position I do fall into is the right position. I let God lead me. You can't go wrong whenever you do that." - The Clarion Ledger

  03/24/21 - *Jerrion EalyJr/2022, Mississippi, 5-08, 187 (DS#21 RB) + More +

Starting running back Jerrion Ealy is one of four Ole Miss football players who coach Lane Kiffin does not expect to practice at all this spring because of injury. Ole Miss held its first spring practice Tuesday, after which Kiffin addressed the media for the first time since National Signing Day in February. Tight end Casey Kelly, safety Daylen Gill and defensive back Demarko Williams are the other three players who will be absent because of injuries. "Obviously there are a bunch of other guys who will be limited or will be back at some point," Kiffin said. "But we expect everybody else to be available at some point this spring."

Ealy, who was Ole Miss' leading rusher in 2020, had offseason surgery that is keeping him off the football field and the baseball diamond this spring. Kiffin did not disclose what the injuries keeping the other players out are. Gill made 18 tackles in nine games last season and Kelly caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Williams is a freshman who early enrolled from Westlake High School in Atlanta. Additionally, Ole Miss will be without quarterback John Rhys Plumlee this spring. Plumlee is an outfielder for the baseball team who has started three games and played in 13 this season. - The Clarion Ledger

  03/19/21 - Ben BrownrSr/2022, Mississippi, 6-5, 312 (DS#20 OG) + More +

Ole Miss has 35 seniors on the roster. Thirteen were seniors last season but opted to return for an extra season as allowed by the NCAA after the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight of those 13 were starters last season. No SEC West team returns more COVID seniors or brings back more returning starters among COVID seniors than Ole Miss. Throw in traditional seniors like Ben Brown, Jacquez Jones, MoMo Sanogo and Keidron Smith, who have three years of starting experience as well, and this team is loaded with veterans. - The Clarion Ledger
