  09/19/21 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Cameron Ward threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns and Incarnate Word beat Texas State 42-34 on Saturday. In a game featuring seven lead changes, Ward threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Darion Chafin with 7:07 left to play for a 35-31 lead and Incarnate Word led the rest of the way. The Cardinals (2-1) used a seven-play, 30-yard drive that lasted 2:19. Incarnate Word's defense set the table for a short field recovering a Texas State fumble on the Bobcats' (1-2) prior drive. Robert Ferrel amassed 132 receiving yards on 10 receptions with two touchdowns, and Taylor Grimes caught 11 passes for 113 yards and a score for Incarnate Word. Brady McBride threw for 278 yards with two touchdowns both going to Marcel Barbee for Texas State. Jahmyl Jeter ran for two touchdowns for the Bobcats. - AP College Football

Jaylin Alderman returned an interception off a tipped pass for a 66-yard touchdown with 13 seconds remaining, giving Louisville a thrilling 42-35 victory over UCF on Friday night. The Knights and their high-speed offense appeared primed to win the back-and-forth battle after intercepting Louisville's Malik Cunningham off a deflection on the previous play for possession at the Cardinals 41 with under a minute to play.

But Alderman, a freshman linebacker, was there to snatch a tip of Dillon Gabriel's pass on the next snap before finding room down the right sideline for the TD to spark a delirious celebration for Louisville. "He's just an instinctive player," linebacker C.J. Avery said of Alderman, who was not available for postgame interviews. "Right before that play, I knew he was going into the game and I just told him, ‘just do your job and you'll make a play.' And he did." UCF (2-1) attempted several laterals on the game's final play before being penalized for an illegal forward pass that closed the victory for Louisville (2-1). Cunningham ran for two touchdowns and threw for another TD in helping Louisville. He was 23-of-38 passing 265 yards and rushed 13 times for 99 yards. The victory was huge for a Cardinals team playing their third game in 12 days and in a second consecutive short week. They trailed twice early but rallied both times and then led twice more before getting the final word on defense. - Louisville/AP College Football

Cameron Ward completed 21 of 38 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns and Incarnate Word took control early on its way to a 40-9 victory over Prairie View A&M in nonconference play on Saturday. Ward hooked up with CJ Hardy for a 16-yard score and a 7-0 lead just 4 minutes into the game. John Scifers added a 49-yard field goal and Marcus Cooper scored on a 16-yard run to put the Cardinals up 17-0 by quarter's end. Kevin Brown scored on an 8-yard run and Ward hit Roger McCuller for a 9-yard TD and a 30-0 halftime lead. Ward connected with Taylor Grimes for an 8-yard TD in the third quarter and Scifers kicked a 45-yard field goal in the fourth to cap Incarnate Word's scoring. Jawon Pass fired a 25-yard TD pass to Colbey Washington in the fourth quarter for the Panthers (1-1). Pass completed 18 of 36 passes for 188 yards with three interceptions.   09/11/21 - CamRon HarrisSr/2022, Miami + More +

A cat survived a scare. So did the Miami Hurricanes. D'Eriq King threw for 200 yards and rushed for 67 more, freshman Andy Borregales kicked a go-ahead 43-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining and No. 22 Miami rallied from a halftime deficit to beat Appalachian State 25-23 on Saturday night. Cam'Ron Harris rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown for Miami (1-1), and Don Chaney Jr. had a rushing score before leaving in the first half with a leg injury.

King led a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the fourth that set up Borregales for what became the winning points. "Obviously, we're going to be happy," Harris said. "I'm not satisfied with the win, but that was a great team that we played." And the Mountaineers - who still get talked about for their stunning win at Michigan in 2007 - put a big scare into Miami. "App State is a really good football team," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "They made it tough on us. We made it tough on ourselves. ... This is what they do. They go on the road and they take down people on the road. But they didn't take us down." Jalen Virgil had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Camerun Peoples had 95 rushing yards and a score for the Mountaineers (1-1), who took a 23-22 lead with 5:48 left when Malik Williams caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Chase Brice. But Appalachian State's last chance stalled near midfield, and Miami got the ball back with 55 seconds left and ran out the clock. "Our players took them down to the wire," Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark said. "It's a gut-wrenching loss." Brice completed 21 of 34 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - Miami/AP College Football

The Miami Herald learned this week that Miami-Dade prosecutors have declined to press charges against UM offensive lineman Delone (DJ) Scaife, 21, who was arrested in early July for carrying a concealed firearm. UM declined comment when asked if Scaife or tight end Larry Hodges, who was arrested in March for carrying a concealed firearm and possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana, would be suspended for any games this season. A Miami-Dade County prosecutor decided not to pursue charges against Hodges. A UM source said UM was aware of the Scaife arrest. - Miami Herald

Cam McCormick's football career the last three years has been a revolving door of surgeries, setbacks, more surgeries and more setbacks. But with less than three weeks until Oregon opens its season at home against Fresno State, the sixth-year senior tight end from Bend is on track to play for the first time since he was the opening-game starter in 2018. When that happens, "I might shed a tear, I don't know," fellow tight end Spencer Webb said recently. "I know what he's been through. I know what his family's been through with that situation. I'm going to be freaking the loudest one on the sideline going crazy. I'll probably run on the field and get a penalty. I'm excited for him and can't wait for that moment." It's been a wild ride for the 6-5, 259-pound McCormick, whose athleticism and pass-catching skills moved him to the top of the depth chart as a redshirt sophomore.

However, late in the first quarter against Bowling Green at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 1, 2018, McCormick caught a pass from Justin Herbert and was tackled for a 2-yard loss that sent him into a three-year tailspin. McCormick broke his fibula and tore the deltoid ligament in his ankle on that play, sidelining him for what he assumed would be just the rest of the season. It became a considerably longer recovery. - Register Guard

  08/22/21 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami + More +

A longtime NFL scout with front-office experience, who is respected in the industry, told me recently that among UM players who could turn pro next spring, the only two whose tape and NFL measurables would warrant a selection in the first half of the draft, in his view, are left tackle Zion Nelson (if he continues to improve) and safety Bubba Bolden. But the scout said he has some doubts about Bolden, believing he has been "overhyped" and expressing concern about the unevenness in his play in 2020. (To his credit, Bolden has acknowledged the need to improve as one reason he returned for 2021.) That scout saw Bolden as a player with the potential to rise to late in the second day of the draft if he performs more consistently this year. For now, he called Bolden a mid third-day pick (fifth-round range). - Miami Herald

  08/21/21 - Zion NelsonrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Offensive tackle Zion Nelson and defensive tackle Nesta Silvera - two key pieces of UM's lines - haven't been spotted during practice media access this week, but there's apparently no cause for concern. Coach Manny Diaz said neither had surgery and both are on track to play in the Sept. 4 opener against Alabama. "Both guys are experiencing soreness from a previous situation," Diaz said. "Being held out, precautionary. Both guys have a lot of experience. I would expect when we start game prep next week, I would expect both to be back with us." Asked if everyone will be available for the Alabama game, Diaz said: "We'll have pretty much a full complement of our guys."

Nelson has not participated in at least the past four practices attended by media, going back to early last week. He was not at Tuesday's and Thursday's practices during the media's 40 minutes of viewing. Nelson, 6-5 and 316 pounds, started seven games last season at left tackle, including the last six of the season. He has been projected by various college football analysts as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. - Miami Herald

  08/17/21 - Will MalloryrSr/2023, Miami + More +

The always charismatic, always outspoken, mostly upbeat Brevin Jordan was the Hurricanes tight end you couldn't help noticing, whether on the field making NFL-type moves, on the sideline injured or in a Zoom teleconference prompting hearty laughs. Now, it's Will Mallory's stage, and Jordan's 6-5, 245-pound talented close friend and former roommate, who missed the spring recovering from shoulder surgery, is back at full strength and determined to make a grand entrance.

"It's definitely different," Mallory, a 22-year-old fourth-year junior, told reporters last weekend at fall camp, when asked about the void left by Jordan, drafted in the fifth round by the Houston Texans. "Been living with Brevin - I've been with him since I got here. But being the main guy is exactly why I wanted to come here. "It's my shot, my turn, I'm ready for it. I've got a great group of guys behind me, too, that can contribute. I'm excited for the opportunity to step up for this team." Last season, while Jordan was catching 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns and dragging defenders along with him in eight games, Mallory was catching 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games. - Miami Herald

It's been over 1,000 days since Cam McCormick has played in a football game. One thousand and seventy to be exact. And if you have to ask who's counting, you've missed the tumultuous and brutal journey of the oft-injured Oregon tight end. Nearing three years since he broke his fibula in the 2018 season opener against Bowling Green, having missed the 2019 season due to a broken ankle and last season as well, McCormick was back on the practice field as a full participant with the Ducks when they opened fall camp Friday morning at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex.

"He looked really good," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "It's very promising watching him run around out there. Cam's journey in particular has been a roller coaster but there's a lot of heart there. There's certainly a lot of logged reps, a lot of football experience, a good football IQ and a want-to. He's gone through what he's gone through to be able to do it. "The time is here now. We feel very optimistic this is going to be a really good season for him. So let's take it day by day, move forward and hopefully we'll get a good season for Cam and the Ducks." It was the first time outside observers had seen McCormick fully participate in a practice since the 2019 preseason. - The Oregonian

Antonio Moultrie is a dude. The redshirt junior was unrecognizable as UAB opened fall practice Tuesday, shedding more than 20 pounds of weight and sporting a freshly toned physique that accentuated his lean and imposing frame. He was also missing from the defensive line rotation and working at outside linebacker with the Blazers' elite pass-rushing unit. "It's different but at the same time pretty much the same," Moultrie said. "At the end of the day, it's just football. You go after the ball and make a play, you play your assignment and put in a good team effort."

A consistent force as an interior defensive lineman the last two seasons, Moultrie started 10 games in 27 appearances while amassing 55 tackles (2.5 for loss), four pass breakups and an interception. He was also an All-C-USA second-team pick last year while helping lead UAB to another top 10 defensive ranking. Moultrie was officially at 290 pounds at the conclusion of the 2020 season and is currently listed at 265 pounds, a stark physical contrast considering his 6-4 physique. "That's probably a more comfortable weight for him and that's what we try to do," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "We let guys be in a weight that fits them. That outside linebacker, it's a little bit leaner, and he's got a lot of versatility and can do a lot of different things." - Birmingham Post Herald

Alabama experienced a mass exodus for the NFL draft on offense, and only a couple starters return. The offensive line has two of those; three if you count Owens, who has starting experience. Neal is expected to slide over to left tackle, a position at which he has experience from high school. He played right tackle last year after spending his freshman year at left guard. With his experience and talent, he'll serve as the anchor of the new group while he protects Bryce Young's blindside.

Owens could continue right where he left off, stepping in to start at center in place of Dickerson, who was injured and could not play in the national championship game. But he's not a long-entrenched starter at the spot. Ekiyor will likely start at right guard again this season. As for left guard, Cohen will probably be the starter, coach Nick Saban said at SEC Media Days. He added that Cohen has "developed very nicely." Randolph got the start at right tackle in the spring game, but it's not guaranteed he will be the guy at that spot against Miami. - Montgomery Advertiser

  07/29/21 - Lou HedleyrSr/2023, Miami + More +

Hurricanes fans know them both well, and both were honored Tuesday when the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its All-ACC Preseason Football Team. Australian punter Lou Hedley, a tattoo-covered, 6-4, 225-pound redshirt junior regarded as the top returning punter in the nation, joined 6-3, 204-pound redshirt junior safety Bubba Bolden on the team. Miami quarterback D'Eriq King was runner-up in the ACC Preseason Player of the Year voting, but the winner, North Carolina junior quarterback Sam Howell, won that honor in a landslide.

King received 11 votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year, while Howell garned 114. Preseason honors were awarded through a vote of 147 media members. Hedley, a native of Mandurah, Australia, has been a gem since he began playing for Miami in 2019. Hedley was one of three national finalists for the Ray Guy Award in 2020, and had the Hurricanes ranked No. 1 in the nation in net punting at 44.9 net yards a punt. He ranked second in the nation in FBS punting at 47.2 yards a punt. - Miami Herald

Louisville football has a major question mark entering fall camp: Who is going to step up at wide receiver? With Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick gone to the NFL, there's a major hole of production in the Cardinals' passing game. A hole that amounted to 1,458 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Likely replacements are Justin Marshall, Braden Smith, Jordan Watkins and Shai Werts, among others. Leaving the Wake Forest game on Dec. 12, those were the names you heard the most heading into the offseason. And those are still the players expected to contribute this season with Marshall starting for a second straight year and Smith set to take Atwell's slot receiver role. But Tyler Harrell walked off the field against Wake Forest, fresh off his first season at Louisville without a catch or snap, and knew he had work to do. There was an opportunity in front of the speedy receiver from Miami, Florida, to jump into the wide receiving corps.

That was all the motivation he needed. "Knowing somebody has to step up so you're going to work hard every second of every hour to improve yourself to perform," Harrell said. Since that game, he's surprised nearly every coach at Louisville not just with his speed (which was clocked at 4.24 seconds and 4.19 seconds, hand time, in the 40-yard dash), but also with just his overall improvement. It's no surprise to himself, though, because Harrell has been focused on the smallest details on his game this offseason, ready to make a difference. - Courier Journal

  07/25/21 - Mike HarleyrSr/2022, Miami + More +

The parade of preseason award nominees marched onward Thursday. And for the University of Miami, it seemed only fitting that all three Hurricanes who represented UM at the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff this week were the first three Canes honored. The third major Miami preseason award watch list Hurricane, senior receiver Mike Harley Jr., was nominated for the Biletnikoff Award.

The speedy Harley, listed as 5-11 and 180 pounds, had his best season in 2020. He chose to return to UM for a fifth season instead of entering the NFL Draft after leading the Hurricanes with 799 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 57 catches. He averaged 14 yards a catch and also returned 10 kickoffs for 213 yards. The Biletnikoff awards college football's top receiver at the end of the season. Any player who catches a pass, regardless of position, is eligible. "God does everything for a reason,'' Harley said Wednesday. "I do all the things right, the little things right...It's going to translate to the field." - Miami Herald
