  08/23/21 - Cam McCormickrSr/2025, Miami, 6-5, 248 (DS#58 TE) + More +

Cam McCormick's football career the last three years has been a revolving door of surgeries, setbacks, more surgeries and more setbacks. But with less than three weeks until Oregon opens its season at home against Fresno State, the sixth-year senior tight end from Bend is on track to play for the first time since he was the opening-game starter in 2018. When that happens, "I might shed a tear, I don't know," fellow tight end Spencer Webb said recently. "I know what he's been through. I know what his family's been through with that situation. I'm going to be freaking the loudest one on the sideline going crazy. I'll probably run on the field and get a penalty. I'm excited for him and can't wait for that moment." It's been a wild ride for the 6-5, 259-pound McCormick, whose athleticism and pass-catching skills moved him to the top of the depth chart as a redshirt sophomore.

However, late in the first quarter against Bowling Green at Autzen Stadium on Sept. 1, 2018, McCormick caught a pass from Justin Herbert and was tackled for a 2-yard loss that sent him into a three-year tailspin. McCormick broke his fibula and tore the deltoid ligament in his ankle on that play, sidelining him for what he assumed would be just the rest of the season. It became a considerably longer recovery. - Register Guard

  08/22/21 - Bubba BoldenSr/2022, Miami, 6-2, 209 (DS#16 SS) + More +

A longtime NFL scout with front-office experience, who is respected in the industry, told me recently that among UM players who could turn pro next spring, the only two whose tape and NFL measurables would warrant a selection in the first half of the draft, in his view, are left tackle Zion Nelson (if he continues to improve) and safety Bubba Bolden. But the scout said he has some doubts about Bolden, believing he has been "overhyped" and expressing concern about the unevenness in his play in 2020. (To his credit, Bolden has acknowledged the need to improve as one reason he returned for 2021.) That scout saw Bolden as a player with the potential to rise to late in the second day of the draft if he performs more consistently this year. For now, he called Bolden a mid third-day pick (fifth-round range). - Miami Herald

  08/20/21 - Carson BeckrSr/2026, Miami, 6-4, 220 (DS#4 QB) + More +

JT Daniels locked down UGA football's starting quarterback job with the way he sparked the offense in his four games to end last season. So the question at the position now isn't about the No. 1 spot. It's about which guy is in position to be the backup for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs heading into the Sept. 4 opener against No. 2 Clemson in Charlotte. Redshirt freshman Carson Beck has the inside track for the job based on his showing this spring including the G-Day spring game.

Second-year offensive coordinator Todd Monken left some wiggle room when asked Thursday about the No. 2 QB. "Well, we're working through that right now," he said. "We left spring with Carson as our No. 2 quarterback, but we're working through that now." Beck, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder from Jacksonville, completed 22 of 31 passes for 236 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the spring game when he worked as the No. 2 quarterback. "I'm excited about Carson Beck's future," coach Kirby Smart said at SEC Media Days in July. "He's a very bright young man. He's done the right things off the field in terms of classroom and doing what he's supposed to do. He's improved in that area. He's talented. He's really got good composure. He's a guy that can stand in the pocket with confidence and make throws." - Athens Banner-Herald

  08/17/21 - Will MalloryrSr/2023, Miami, 6-5, 239 (DS#11 TE) + More +

The always charismatic, always outspoken, mostly upbeat Brevin Jordan was the Hurricanes tight end you couldn't help noticing, whether on the field making NFL-type moves, on the sideline injured or in a Zoom teleconference prompting hearty laughs. Now, it's Will Mallory's stage, and Jordan's 6-5, 245-pound talented close friend and former roommate, who missed the spring recovering from shoulder surgery, is back at full strength and determined to make a grand entrance.

"It's definitely different," Mallory, a 22-year-old fourth-year junior, told reporters last weekend at fall camp, when asked about the void left by Jordan, drafted in the fifth round by the Houston Texans. "Been living with Brevin - I've been with him since I got here. But being the main guy is exactly why I wanted to come here. "It's my shot, my turn, I'm ready for it. I've got a great group of guys behind me, too, that can contribute. I'm excited for the opportunity to step up for this team." Last season, while Jordan was catching 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns and dragging defenders along with him in eight games, Mallory was catching 22 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games. - Miami Herald

  08/10/21 - Cam McCormickrSr/2025, Miami, 6-5, 248 (DS#58 TE) + More +

It's been over 1,000 days since Cam McCormick has played in a football game. One thousand and seventy to be exact. And if you have to ask who's counting, you've missed the tumultuous and brutal journey of the oft-injured Oregon tight end. Nearing three years since he broke his fibula in the 2018 season opener against Bowling Green, having missed the 2019 season due to a broken ankle and last season as well, McCormick was back on the practice field as a full participant with the Ducks when they opened fall camp Friday morning at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex.

"He looked really good," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "It's very promising watching him run around out there. Cam's journey in particular has been a roller coaster but there's a lot of heart there. There's certainly a lot of logged reps, a lot of football experience, a good football IQ and a want-to. He's gone through what he's gone through to be able to do it. "The time is here now. We feel very optimistic this is going to be a really good season for him. So let's take it day by day, move forward and hopefully we'll get a good season for Cam and the Ducks." It was the first time outside observers had seen McCormick fully participate in a practice since the 2019 preseason. - The Oregonian

  08/07/21 - Antonio MoultrierSr/2023, Miami, 6-4, 275 (DS#110 DT) + More +

Antonio Moultrie is a dude. The redshirt junior was unrecognizable as UAB opened fall practice Tuesday, shedding more than 20 pounds of weight and sporting a freshly toned physique that accentuated his lean and imposing frame. He was also missing from the defensive line rotation and working at outside linebacker with the Blazers' elite pass-rushing unit. "It's different but at the same time pretty much the same," Moultrie said. "At the end of the day, it's just football. You go after the ball and make a play, you play your assignment and put in a good team effort."

A consistent force as an interior defensive lineman the last two seasons, Moultrie started 10 games in 27 appearances while amassing 55 tackles (2.5 for loss), four pass breakups and an interception. He was also an All-C-USA second-team pick last year while helping lead UAB to another top 10 defensive ranking. Moultrie was officially at 290 pounds at the conclusion of the 2020 season and is currently listed at 265 pounds, a stark physical contrast considering his 6-4 physique. "That's probably a more comfortable weight for him and that's what we try to do," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "We let guys be in a weight that fits them. That outside linebacker, it's a little bit leaner, and he's got a lot of versatility and can do a lot of different things." - Birmingham Post Herald

  08/03/21 - Javion CohenSr/2024, Miami, 6-4, 324 (DS#11 OG) + More +

Alabama experienced a mass exodus for the NFL draft on offense, and only a couple starters return. The offensive line has two of those; three if you count Owens, who has starting experience. Neal is expected to slide over to left tackle, a position at which he has experience from high school. He played right tackle last year after spending his freshman year at left guard. With his experience and talent, he'll serve as the anchor of the new group while he protects Bryce Young's blindside.

Owens could continue right where he left off, stepping in to start at center in place of Dickerson, who was injured and could not play in the national championship game. But he's not a long-entrenched starter at the spot. Ekiyor will likely start at right guard again this season. As for left guard, Cohen will probably be the starter, coach Nick Saban said at SEC Media Days. He added that Cohen has "developed very nicely." Randolph got the start at right tackle in the spring game, but it's not guaranteed he will be the guy at that spot against Miami. - Montgomery Advertiser

  07/29/21 - Lou HedleyrSr/2023, Miami, 6-3, 222 (DS#11 P) + More +

Hurricanes fans know them both well, and both were honored Tuesday when the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its All-ACC Preseason Football Team. Australian punter Lou Hedley, a tattoo-covered, 6-4, 225-pound redshirt junior regarded as the top returning punter in the nation, joined 6-3, 204-pound redshirt junior safety Bubba Bolden on the team. Miami quarterback D'Eriq King was runner-up in the ACC Preseason Player of the Year voting, but the winner, North Carolina junior quarterback Sam Howell, won that honor in a landslide.

King received 11 votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year, while Howell garned 114. Preseason honors were awarded through a vote of 147 media members. Hedley, a native of Mandurah, Australia, has been a gem since he began playing for Miami in 2019. Hedley was one of three national finalists for the Ray Guy Award in 2020, and had the Hurricanes ranked No. 1 in the nation in net punting at 44.9 net yards a punt. He ranked second in the nation in FBS punting at 47.2 yards a punt. - Miami Herald

  07/28/21 - Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Louisville football has a major question mark entering fall camp: Who is going to step up at wide receiver? With Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick gone to the NFL, there's a major hole of production in the Cardinals' passing game. A hole that amounted to 1,458 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Likely replacements are Justin Marshall, Braden Smith, Jordan Watkins and Shai Werts, among others. Leaving the Wake Forest game on Dec. 12, those were the names you heard the most heading into the offseason. And those are still the players expected to contribute this season with Marshall starting for a second straight year and Smith set to take Atwell's slot receiver role. But Tyler Harrell walked off the field against Wake Forest, fresh off his first season at Louisville without a catch or snap, and knew he had work to do. There was an opportunity in front of the speedy receiver from Miami, Florida, to jump into the wide receiving corps.

That was all the motivation he needed. "Knowing somebody has to step up so you're going to work hard every second of every hour to improve yourself to perform," Harrell said. Since that game, he's surprised nearly every coach at Louisville not just with his speed (which was clocked at 4.24 seconds and 4.19 seconds, hand time, in the 40-yard dash), but also with just his overall improvement. It's no surprise to himself, though, because Harrell has been focused on the smallest details on his game this offseason, ready to make a difference. - Courier Journal

  07/25/21 - Mike HarleyrSr/2022, Miami, 5-10, 179 (DS#48 WR) + More +

The parade of preseason award nominees marched onward Thursday. And for the University of Miami, it seemed only fitting that all three Hurricanes who represented UM at the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff this week were the first three Canes honored. The third major Miami preseason award watch list Hurricane, senior receiver Mike Harley Jr., was nominated for the Biletnikoff Award.

The speedy Harley, listed as 5-11 and 180 pounds, had his best season in 2020. He chose to return to UM for a fifth season instead of entering the NFL Draft after leading the Hurricanes with 799 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 57 catches. He averaged 14 yards a catch and also returned 10 kickoffs for 213 yards. The Biletnikoff awards college football's top receiver at the end of the season. Any player who catches a pass, regardless of position, is eligible. "God does everything for a reason,'' Harley said Wednesday. "I do all the things right, the little things right...It's going to translate to the field." - Miami Herald

  07/24/21 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Miami quarterback D'Eriq King is fully vaccinated, almost fully healed from his torn ACL and meniscus and judging by his words and those around him Wednesday at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff, ready to take that first hit against Alabama on Sept. 4 in the season opener. Make that 18-point favorite defending champion Alabama. The bigger the bark, the more fun the challenge. "I kind of laugh at it,'' King told three ACC beat writers, when asked during a private interview what he thinks of the 18-point spread. But be assured that he's not laughing at Alabama.

"I like the underdog mentality,'' he said. "My whole life I've been an underdog. So I've taken and run with it. It's just motivation. Obviously, I'm looking forward to every single game, but being an 18-point underdog to the defending national champ Week 1, you've got something to look forward to." King, a sixth-year senior who was a Maxwell Trophy semifinalist last season, threw for 2,686 yards with 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions in his 10 1/2 games before the injury. He also rushed for 538 yards and four scores. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes and his 3,224 total yards for the 8-3 Hurricanes ranked 11th in the nation. - Miami Herald

Here come the preseason awards lists, and for University of Miami quarterback D'Eriq King, they will be plentiful. King was named to the watch list Monday for the 2021 Maxwell Award that honors college football's player of the year. The high-profile King will be among three players representing the Hurricanes on Wednesday at the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. The other two are senior receiver Mike Harley and redshirt junior safety Bubba Bolden. Bolden was already named a preseason candidate for the Bednarik Award.

King, a sixth-year senior, was a Maxwell semifinalist last season after throwing for 2,686 with 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions, while rushing for 538 yards and four scores. He completed 64.1 percent of his passes, the second-best single-season completion percentage in school history. His 3,224 total yards for the 8-3 Hurricanes ranked 11th in the nation. - Miami Herald

  07/03/21 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami, 5-09, 197 (DS#55 WR) + More +

UM quarterback D'Eriq King made history just after midnight on Thursday morning, becoming the first Hurricanes athlete to agree to a sponsorship deal under new NCAA legislation that permits players to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness. King agreed to a deal to promote two Tampa-based companies: College Hunks Hauling Junk & Moving and Murphy Auto Group. King received a combined $10,000 signing bonus from the two companies and will receive monthly compensation as well. The value of the deal tops $20,000, according to Omar Soliman, the co-founder of College Hunks. College Hunks had 150 franchises nationally; the idea for the company was hatched in a UM student business plan competition in 2004. Murphy owns five car dealerships in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. - Miami Herald

  06/21/21 - Zach McCloudrSr/2022, Miami, 6-2, 246 (DS#42 OLB) + More +

After five years at outside linebacker, the position at which he was recruited, McCloud is expected to switch to defensive end. And it wasn't some long, thought-out plan. If anything, the switch started by accident. McCloud started to dabble in defensive line ahead of the bowl game against Oklahoma State this past December. And he really had no intention to try something new. "I was like, 'Man, coach, I can do that.' I was being cocky and making a joke, but he perked up and was like, 'Really?' and it kind of turned into a serious thing," McCloud said in March. "I took my first reps at D-end that day and then just started rolling in at practice as a D-end. (It) went from being just that third-down package to, 'Well, if I get caught on the field in base, I have to know that technique.' … It just happened naturally." Defensive end is no small undertaking for McCloud to somewhat jokingly proclaim he can play. Especially at a place such as Miami. The defensive end spot is a big deal at Miami in its 4-3 base system. Just this past year alone, the Hurricanes had three defensive ends drafted into the NFL, two in the first round in Greg Rousseau and Jaelen Phillips. - Montgomery Advertiser

  05/23/21 - Justice OluwaseunrSr/2023, Miami, 6-3, 336 (DS#92 OG) + More +

The Miami Hurricanes are getting another big body. UNLV offensive lineman Justice Oluwaseun, who previously played for Miami offensive line coach Garin Justice when Justice coached at UNLV, announced Saturday that he is transferring to the Hurricanes. He chose UM over schools that included Baylor and Houston. Oluwaseun, 6-3 and 325 pounds, has played both sides at tackle as well as guard. He started UNLV's six games in 2020 at right tackle. In 2019, he started 11 games. This will be his second redshirt junior year because the NCAA allowed all players to maintain their eligibility status in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the Hurricanes return all five starting linemen from last season, not including standout Navaughn Donaldson (sat out most of last season after major knee surgery), Oluswaseun will be a boost for a line not expected to have left guard Jakai Clark back after undergoing surgery on the AC joint of his right shoulder. - Miami Herald
