  10/11/21 - DEriq KingrSr/2022, Miami + More +

Miami quarterback D'Eriq King needs surgery to repair his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, a major blow to the reeling Hurricanes and their hopes of contending in the Atlantic Coast Conference. King was injured in the second half of Miami's loss to Michigan State last month, a game that may end up marking the last appearance of his college career. He left the field after getting hurt, then returned and didn't miss a series but was clearly laboring.

The Hurricanes learned the following day that he likely needed surgery, but both they and King were holding out hope that rehabilitation would give him a chance of playing again this season. That hope is now gone, coach Manny Diaz said Monday. “We're now however many weeks out, and I think in D'Eriq's mind we've exhausted that opportunity, that possibility,” Diaz said on his weekly radio show on WQAM-AM. “So, he's going to get the surgery on his shoulder and it's going to be Tyler Van Dyke's team.” King, who was in his sixth college season — taking advantage of a redshirt year at Houston and the NCAA decision to give everyone an extra year of eligibility in response to playing through a pandemic last season — completed 66% of his passes in three games for Miami this season. He entered the year widely touted as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks, is the most accurate passer in Miami history and has accounted for 111 college touchdowns, 76 of them passing, 32 more rushing and three receiving. No player in college football over the last 20 years has had as many touchdowns in each of those categories. - AP College Football

Ward added a 17-yard touchdown pass to Hardy and a 54-yard strike to Kevin Brown that put the Cardinals (4-1, 2-0) up 28-13 at intermission. Ward was 25-of-37 passing but was picked off twice. Brown carried 15 times for 81 yards, and he caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. Cooper carried eight times for 64 yards and two scores.   Cameron Ward passed for 352 yards with two touchdowns as Incarnate Word scored in every quarter and shut out McNeese 31-0 Saturday to open Southland Conference play. The Cardinals (3-1) had closed their nonconference slate last week with a historic 42-35 defeat of Texas State, UIW's first win against an FBS program. Incarnate Word took the opening kickoff 75 yards in 12 plays to lead 7-0 when Kevin Brown ran the final 14 yards to score. Ward completed a 5-yard pass to Darion Chafion to convert a fourth-and-2 near midfield to keep the drive going.

Ce'Cori Tolds recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and the Cardinals scored a second touchdown four plays later on a Cameron Grimes run from the 1. Late in the game UIW's Rashon Davis intercepted McNeese's Cody Ogeron to end a Cowboys threat. Incarnate Word converted the turnover into a short field goal. Ogeron was 22-for-36 passing for 215 yards. McNeese was held to 75 yards rushing on 27 carries. Mason Pierce, who became the first Cowboy football player in the 78-year history of the program to take the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown when he sprinted 100-yards a week ago, was held to 30 yards on two kickoff returns Saturday. - AP College Football
