Alabama coach Nick Saban on Wednesday denied that his program had contact with Louisville transfer Tyler Harrell before the wide receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal last month, committing 10 days later to join the Tide. "We don't tamper with anybody, so I don't know about anything or anybody that tampered with him," Saban said Wednesday in Hoover before participating in the Regions Tradition Pro-Am.

"I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told the website when asked about Harrell. "Last year we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." Harrell entered the transfer portal April 12. The same day, 247 Sports cited three sources in reporting, "the expectation is that Harrell will transfer to Alabama." Harrell visited Alabama the following weekend for its spring game, then committed the ensuing Friday in an Instagram post. Alabama has not yet added Harrell to its online roster and the school does not formally announce incoming transfers. - Birmingham News

Louisville head football coach Scott Satterfield told 247Sports he believes tampering took place with receiver Tyler Harrell, who entered the portal and committed to Alabama. The in-depth piece examines one the of biggest unintended consequences of the transfer portal: Tampering. Another word being used for the back-channeling to get a player from another program's roster is poaching.

Such is the case with Louisville and receiver Tyler Harrell, at least that's what Satterfield said. Satterfield "believes it occurred," the report states, but, there is nothing he can prove. "I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told 247Sports. "Last year, we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." - Birmingham News

  04/28/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami + More +

Fans attending Washington State's Crimson and Gray spring game were eager to get a sneak preview of the team's new offense and highly touted transfer quarterback. They didn't leave disappointed. Cameron Ward led WSU's newly installed Air Raid attack with accuracy and poise, guiding four touchdown drives in his six possessions Saturday afternoon as the Cougars wrapped up spring camp with a two-hour mock game in front of a few thousand spectators at sunny Gesa Field. Teams were divided by offense and defense. The defenders "scored" by forcing turnovers, three-and-outs, punts and missed field goals.

WSU's offense prevailed 56-51 on a 50-yard walk-off touchdown from reserve QB Chris Irvin to outside receiver Tsion Nunnally. With Ward in the lineup, the Cougar offense outscored its defensive counterparts 28-9. "It's tough for a guy that's never played in this environment, in this stadium before with this capacity and atmosphere, and I think he handled it well - he handled himself," slot receiver Lincoln Victor said of Ward, the sophomore who left FCS program Incarnate Word after two prolific seasons and immediately captured starting duties at WSU. "He rallied the troops when we needed it. He was himself. He wasn't trying to be Superman and do things out of the ordinary. He was Cam Ward and I commend him for being who he is...It's only going to rise from here and he's only gonna get better. Fans should expect a lot from him." Ward completed 21 of 30 passes for 246 yards and tossed four touchdowns. He didn't commit any turnovers and didn't force anything, making good use of quick, precise passes and sprinkling in the occasional shot while operating the up-tempo offensive system with grace during a promising debut for the WSU faithful. - The Spokesman-Review

The Canes defense just got instantly better. Standout UCLA middle linebacker Caleb Johnson announced on Friday evening that he is transferring to Miami, immediately bolstering UM's most vulnerable position group and becoming the 10th player from the transfer portal to choose UM since head coach Mario Cristobal was hired in December. "Committed!!,'' Johnson, listed as 6-1 and 230 pounds, posted on social media just after 6 p.m. to which Cristobal immediately tweeted #GoCanes with a GIF of former UM star Santana Moss.

Johnson chose UM over Texas, where he played three games in 2019 before transferring to UCLA entering the 2020 season. He is from Murrieta, California, and also previously played at Fullerton College, a two-year community college. Johnson, who has one season of eligibility remaining, started 17 games at inside linebacker the past two seasons for the Bruins. In a pandemic-shortened 2020, he led UCLA with 44 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks and was second with 7 tackles for loss in seven games. Last season, when UCLA finished 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-12, Johnson had 45 tackles, with one interception and three pass breakups. - Miami Herald

Not only did former Hurricanes defensive end and Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick Jaelan Phillips play for UCLA before arriving at UM, but so did 6-4, 250-pound Mitchell Agude, a star defensive end who observed several UM spring practices and the spring game from the sideline. Agude announced his commitment to Miami in late March. In two seasons at UCLA, Agude started 15 games and had 78 tackles, 15 1/2 tackles for loss, 4 1/2 sacks and nine forced fumbles. Besides Agude and Johnson, the other eight players who have transferred or are in the process of transferring to Miami are offensive linemen Logan Sagapolu (Oregon) and Jonathan Denis (Oregon); running back Henry Parrish (Ole Miss); receiver Frank Ladson (Clemson); cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. (West Virginia); defensive tackles Antonio Moultrie (UAB), Jake Lichtenstein (USC) and Akheem Mesidor (West Virginia). - Miami Herald

It took just one word for talented former West Virginia defensive tackle Akheem Mesidor to excite the Miami Hurricanes and their fans Wednesday night. "Committed!!!" the 6-2, 272-pound lineman posted on his Twitter account Wednesday night. Mesidor, who is from Ottawa, Ontario, went to high school at Clearwater Academy and was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2021 as a sophomore.

As a freshman All-American in 2020, Mesidor led West Virginia in sacks with five and was third in tackles for loss with 6 1/2. He had 32 tackles that season. In 2021, Messidor added 4 1/2 sacks and 33 quarterback pressures. He is the fourth Hurricane defensive lineman to transfer to Miami under new coach Mario Cristobal and joins another West Virginia transfer, cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. The other linemen who transferred: Antonio Moultrie (UAB), Jake Lichtenstein (USC), Mitchell Agude (UCLA). - Miami Herald

Alabama went back to the portal for receiver talent, and for a second straight year, it may have landed one of the fastest receivers in the sport. Tyler Harrell, formerly of Louisville, committed to the Crimson Tide on Friday. He joins former Georgia receiver Jermaine Burton as incoming transfers but likely compares more to last year's arrival, Jameson Williams. Like the former Buckeye, Harrell will bring game-changing speed to Bryce Young's menu of targets. The 6-foot, 197-pounder was reportedly clocked running a 4.24 in the 40 at last spring's pro day in Louisville.

Harrell was a three-star prospect coming out of Columbus High School in Miami. He was rated 135th by 247Sports among receivers in the 2018 class that also included No. 5 Jaylen Waddle. Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Cincinnati and East Carolina were among the top contenders in his first recruitment. His impact at Louisville was minimal early on, redshirting his freshman season after playing in two games. A year later, he played in just two games, none in 2020 before having a breakout season last fall. Harrell caught 18 passes for 523 yards with six touchdowns in 2021, following that up with an impressive spring. - Birmingham News
