Bye-bye turnover chain. We knew the famed turnover chain wasn't going to be implemented during the 2022 University of Miami season, even though University of Miami coach Mario Cristobal never committed when asked about it after he arrived at UM. But on Thursday at the ACC Football Kickoff media days in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cristobal confirmed to three Miami Hurricanes beat writers that the Canes would not be using the chain, tweeted on Wednesday night by @ActionNetworkHQ's Brett McMurphy. McMurphy said Miami was "dumping the turnover chain," and that Cristobal told him, "It's not part of our culture."

Here's what Cristobal told three local UM beat writers about the subject, when the Miami Herald asked about it, in a private interview session early Thursday: "We're not using it No. 1, but I'd never use a word like 'dumping' because I believe that disrespects things,'' Cristobal said. "I don't judge. It's just really not part of what we're doing - not good, bad or indifferent. "Everything we do unrelated to any turnover chain or any external motivation, our focus has to be on working to get better in every facet of football. We're not using it. But that's kind of been known for a while." Added Cristobal: "It's no knock on anybody or anything, it's just not our way. Let's have a turnover celebration on the sideline, where you don't get a penalty." - Miami Herald

Alabama offensive lineman Javion Cohen shared Tuesday that he has spent the past month at a rehabilitation facility in Massachusetts for "mental health reasons." Cohen, a junior who started at left guard last season, wrote on Instagram, "the pressure we feel as athletes is unsurmountable and can be too much at times." He shared a series of photographs from Herren Wellness, the substance abuse treatment facility founded by former NBA player Chris Herren. One of the photographs shows Cohen reading two books on the facility's grounds, including, "Refuge Recovery: A Buddhist Path to Recovering From Addiction" by Noah Levine. Cohen is the second Alabama offensive lineman to spend time at Herren Wellness in recent months. Freshman Dayne Shor revealed his struggle with mental health after entering the transfer portal in May and later transferred to Connecticut. - Birmingham News

Miami returns the majority of its tight ends from last season. In addition to that, they have the most continuity, coaching-wise, as tight ends coach Stephen Field is the lone member of Manny Diaz's staff who Cristobal kept on his on-field staff. "Coach Field is my guy," tight end Will Mallory said on March 9. "He's been here the last three years and I wouldn't really want to be with anyone else. Him having a previous relationship with coach Cristobal, they work well together. They know how they operate. ... He's just a great coach and great person. I was really happy to have him here.

Mallory, a fifth-year senior, led the group last year, racking up 347 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions. "I want to be more effective in the run game and I want to be that pass-catcher that [quarterback Tyler Van Dyke] can trust all the time," Mallory said. "So that starts with me putting in the work to be able to do that, and I know I can." Mallory missed the spring game and part of spring practice with due to a shoulder injury, but Cristobal said he expected him to be back for the season. - Sun Sentinel

  06/17/22 - Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

James Hardwick was in Bradenton, Florida when he first witnessed the speed of Tyler Harrell. Harrell was a sophomore at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, but he caught the attention of Hardwick at the 2016 state track meet. Coaching for another school, Hardwick watched Harrell grab the baton from a relay teammate and rocket past other runners. "I saw a young man and I said, "God, let me go ahead and get a chance to work with this guy," Hardwick said, "and see what we can do." Hardwick was hired to coach sprinters at Columbus the next season. Hardwick said Harrell wasn't the only reason he joined but the opportunity to coach him was certainly part of it. "He can run," Hardwick said. "I'm not exaggerating. I'm not giving you a bunch of bull. He can move."

The numbers back it up. At the Louisville pro day, he was hand-timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.19 seconds and officially clocked at 4.24. The record at the NFL combine is 4.22. Hardwick said in their discussions every week that he and Harrell talk about wanting him to be one of the fastest in the 40. "We want to run low 4.1s," Hardwick said. "That's our goal." Finish with an official time in that range, and Hardwick will be the first of many in Harrell's career lining up to get a chance to work with the speedster. "He wants to catch some touchdowns from Bryce Young, and carry the legend the receivers have built through the years," Hardwick said. "He wants to be the next great receiver to come through Alabama." - Montgomery Advertiser

  06/15/22 - Mohamed TourerSr/2026, Miami, 6-1, 236 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

Mohamed Toure is officially out for the fall. Speaking to reporters at his charity golf outing in Bedminster on Monday, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano confirmed that the fourth-year defensive end will miss the 2022 season after having surgery to repair an injury he suffered during spring camp. "Mo had surgery, so he is going to be out for the year," Schiano said. "Which is sad but he's going to rehab, he's got a tremendous attitude and we'll see him in 2023." Suspected in the moment and now confirmed, the injury is a devastating blow to a Rutgers defense that lost another linebacker for the year when four-star freshman Moses Walker tore an ACL in practice in the spring.

Toure, who led the Scarlet Knights with 4.5 sacks in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, was poised to be a key piece on a promising defensive line. The unit brings back veteran defensive tackles Mayan Ahanotu and Ifeanyi Maijeh and emerging young players like Aaron Lewis, Kyonte Hamilton and Cam'Ron Stewart while adding highly-touted defensive end prospects Q'yaeir Price and Kenny Fletcher from its 2022 recruiting class. - Star Ledger

After perhaps the most explosive word war in recent memory, it's easy to forget the previous controversy. Back on May 5, a quote in a 247Sports story from Louisville coach Scott Satterfield implied some funny business when receiver Tyler Harrell transferred to Alabama. Nick Saban denied any tampering occurred when asked to respond to Satterfield's remarks at last Wednesday's Regions Tradition Pro-Am in Birmingham. Now, an interview with Satterfield Published Friday morning in the (Louisville) Courier Journal added the next chapter in the saga. "I didn't call Coach Saban out," Satterfield told the Courier Journal. "I'm talking about generalities, talking common sense here. When a guy gets in the transfer portal and a couple days later he announces where he's going, what's going on?"

The Harrell transfer story began when he entered the portal April 12. The Louisville 247Sports site reported the same day the speedy receiver was expected to land at Alabama. Ten days later, he officially committed to the Crimson Tide. That led to the Satterfield tampering quote to 247Sports on May 5 which received plenty of attention in the college football world. "I think it's not only (Harrell), it's happened before here," Satterfield told 247Sports. "Last year we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." - Birmingham News

University of Miami standout safety James Williams is laser focused about being "great.'' He also loves his threads. Williams, the 6-5, 218-pound former nationally heralded five-star recruit out of Plantation American Heritage, has entered the world of Name, Image and Likeness. Represented by marketing agent Eric Dounn of LAA Sports & Entertainment, Williams has signed a two-year merchandise and memorabilia deal to be the "lead ambassador" of CanesWear in Davie.

He is starting his own clothing line that will be promoted and branded as #BeGreat - Williams' well-known slogan on social media. "I'm very excited about it," Williams, who grew up in Opa-locka, told the Miami Herald on Sunday. "I like whatever I wear to stand out - and mean something. For me it will represent the people in this community and hopefully aspire the kids in South Florida to be great." Williams, his marketing agent Eric Dounn of LAA Sports & Entertainment and CanesWear founder Brett Gittelman said the two-year deal with CanesWear is worth "at least $30,000." It will include store appearances, autograph signings, promotional videos and anything else he can do to promote Gittelman and double-UM grad co-owner Ken Graff's business. - Miami Herald

  05/12/22 - Tyler HarrellrSr/2024, Miami, 6-0, 193 (DS#55 WR) + More +

Alabama coach Nick Saban on Wednesday denied that his program had contact with Louisville transfer Tyler Harrell before the wide receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal last month, committing 10 days later to join the Tide. "We don't tamper with anybody, so I don't know about anything or anybody that tampered with him," Saban said Wednesday in Hoover before participating in the Regions Tradition Pro-Am.

"I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told the website when asked about Harrell. "Last year we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going. You can look at that and know that something went on before they were in the portal." Harrell entered the transfer portal April 12. The same day, 247 Sports cited three sources in reporting, "the expectation is that Harrell will transfer to Alabama." Harrell visited Alabama the following weekend for its spring game, then committed the ensuing Friday in an Instagram post. Alabama has not yet added Harrell to its online roster and the school does not formally announce incoming transfers. - Birmingham News

Louisville head football coach Scott Satterfield told 247Sports he believes tampering took place with receiver Tyler Harrell, who entered the portal and committed to Alabama. The in-depth piece examines one the of biggest unintended consequences of the transfer portal: Tampering. Another word being used for the back-channeling to get a player from another program's roster is poaching.

Such is the case with Louisville and receiver Tyler Harrell, at least that's what Satterfield said. Satterfield "believes it occurred," the report states, but, there is nothing he can prove. "I think it's not only him, it's happened before here," Satterfield told 247Sports. "Last year, we had a few guys that jumped into the portal and the next day they're announcing where they're going.   04/28/22 - Cam WardrSr/2025, Miami, 6-2, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Fans attending Washington State's Crimson and Gray spring game were eager to get a sneak preview of the team's new offense and highly touted transfer quarterback. They didn't leave disappointed. Cameron Ward led WSU's newly installed Air Raid attack with accuracy and poise, guiding four touchdown drives in his six possessions Saturday afternoon as the Cougars wrapped up spring camp with a two-hour mock game in front of a few thousand spectators at sunny Gesa Field. Teams were divided by offense and defense. The defenders "scored" by forcing turnovers, three-and-outs, punts and missed field goals.

WSU's offense prevailed 56-51 on a 50-yard walk-off touchdown from reserve QB Chris Irvin to outside receiver Tsion Nunnally. With Ward in the lineup, the Cougar offense outscored its defensive counterparts 28-9. "It's tough for a guy that's never played in this environment, in this stadium before with this capacity and atmosphere, and I think he handled it well - he handled himself," slot receiver Lincoln Victor said of Ward, the sophomore who left FCS program Incarnate Word after two prolific seasons and immediately captured starting duties at WSU. "He rallied the troops when we needed it. He was himself. He wasn't trying to be Superman and do things out of the ordinary. He was Cam Ward and I commend him for being who he is...It's only going to rise from here and he's only gonna get better. Fans should expect a lot from him." Ward completed 21 of 30 passes for 246 yards and tossed four touchdowns. He didn't commit any turnovers and didn't force anything, making good use of quick, precise passes and sprinkling in the occasional shot while operating the up-tempo offensive system with grace during a promising debut for the WSU faithful. - The Spokesman-Review

  04/26/22 - Caleb JohnsonrSr/2023, Miami, 5-11, 228 (DS#20 ILB) + More +

The Canes defense just got instantly better. Standout UCLA middle linebacker Caleb Johnson announced on Friday evening that he is transferring to Miami, immediately bolstering UM's most vulnerable position group and becoming the 10th player from the transfer portal to choose UM since head coach Mario Cristobal was hired in December. "Committed!!,'' Johnson, listed as 6-1 and 230 pounds, posted on social media just after 6 p.m. to which Cristobal immediately tweeted #GoCanes with a GIF of former UM star Santana Moss.

Johnson chose UM over Texas, where he played three games in 2019 before transferring to UCLA entering the 2020 season. He is from Murrieta, California, and also previously played at Fullerton College, a two-year community college. Johnson, who has one season of eligibility remaining, started 17 games at inside linebacker the past two seasons for the Bruins. In a pandemic-shortened 2020, he led UCLA with 44 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks and was second with 7 tackles for loss in seven games. Last season, when UCLA finished 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-12, Johnson had 45 tackles, with one interception and three pass breakups. - Miami Herald
