 Caleb Johnson, Miami, Player News

  04/26/22 - ILB Caleb JohnsonrSr/2023, Miami, 6-0, 235 (DS#44 ILB) + More +

The Canes defense just got instantly better. Standout UCLA middle linebacker Caleb Johnson announced on Friday evening that he is transferring to Miami, immediately bolstering UM's most vulnerable position group and becoming the 10th player from the transfer portal to choose UM since head coach Mario Cristobal was hired in December. "Committed!!,'' Johnson, listed as 6-1 and 230 pounds, posted on social media just after 6 p.m. to which Cristobal immediately tweeted #GoCanes with a GIF of former UM star Santana Moss.

Johnson chose UM over Texas, where he played three games in 2019 before transferring to UCLA entering the 2020 season. He is from Murrieta, California, and also previously played at Fullerton College, a two-year community college. Johnson, who has one season of eligibility remaining, started 17 games at inside linebacker the past two seasons for the Bruins. In a pandemic-shortened 2020, he led UCLA with 44 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks and was second with 7 tackles for loss in seven games. Last season, when UCLA finished 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-12, Johnson had 45 tackles, with one interception and three pass breakups. - Miami Herald

Phil Austin has this to say about Caleb Johnson, and he means it in the kindest way possible: "He was just a freak," the Fullerton College assistant coach said of his former player. When Johnson starred at Fullerton, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker was a devastating hitter, could rush the passer and easily dropped into coverage. He out-ran defensive backs and chased down receivers. And he was one of the strongest players on Fullerton's undefeated 2017 team. But before Johnson could parlay his athletic gifts into a UCLA scholarship, he found another use for his skillset: working weekends as a bouncer at bars in downtown Fullerton. "I've seen some crazy stuff when I was working," Johnson said, recalling the seemingly nightly routine of removing at least one customer from the premises. Now instead of throwing rowdy patrons out of bars, Johnson is tossing opposing players to the turf for a UCLA defense trying to turn a corner in the third year under Chip Kelly. The redshirt junior linebacker has 12 tackles, which ranks tied for fourth on the team, with 3 1/2 tackles for loss and 2 1/2 sacks. - Los Angeles Times
