  08/22/22 - Storm DuckrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-0, 195 (DS#55 CB) + More +

North Carolina cornerback Storm Duck changed numbers this season, and it may prompt fans to ask, "Who's this?" because he has missed so many games the past two seasons. Duck played in just a combined eight games the past two years because of an array of injuries that kept him sidelined. The Tar Heels sorely missed his presence after a promising freshman campaign in 2019 in which he played in every game and started nine. Duck, who switched jerseys from No. 29 to No. 3, even missed the start of fall camp for undisclosed reasons, but he said he's ready to play in the Heels' season opener on Aug. 27 against Florida A&M. He enters this season confident he can return to form when he was considered the best cover corner on the Heels' roster.

"Obviously, over the last few years it's been hard, but I'm over that hump now," Duck said. "I'm feeling mentally 100 percent confident, physically 100 percent confident since I got back started playing." The last time Duck was truly confident was at the beginning of his sophomore year. He ended his freshman year on high note, with a pick-6 interception return against Temple in Carolina's Military Bowl win. The talk of a potential NFL future for Duck was prevalent as he started the 2020 season. But he suffered a lower-body injury in the fourth quarter of UNC's win at Boston College in the second game of the season and missed the Heels' remaining 10 games. - Raleigh News Observer

  08/22/22 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Tyler Shough has been named Texas Tech's starting quarterback by new coach Joey McGuire. The announcement Sunday came just less than two weeks before the Red Raiders play their season opener Sept. 3 against Murray State. Shough, a senior in his second year with the Red Raiders after transferring from Oregon, was picked as the starter over sophomore Donovan Smith and redshirt freshman Behren Morton. "I first want to praise all three of our quarterbacks as this was an unbelievable competition," McGuire said. "Tyler has played well and put our offense in position to be effective consistently throughout camp, which has earned him the right to be our starting quarterback. Tyler has a great football IQ and has really captured what we want this offense to look like with the type of responsibility we put on the quarterback." Shough completed 64 of 92 passes (69.6%) for 872 yards and six touchdowns in Texas Tech's four games last season before breaking a collarbone. He had started 11 games at Oregon before joining the Red Raiders. - AP College Football

  08/13/22 - Tyler HudsonSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 196 (DS#81 WR) + More +

Louisville isn't without experienced players heading into Season 4 under Scott Satterfield. The Cardinals return seven players with starting experience on offense and 10 on defense after going 6-7 in 2021. Still, the team lost valuable players like CJ Avery to graduation while others like Tyler Harrell opted to hit the transfer portal. The Cardinals don't have to worry, though, given the host of new players available to help fill in those spots.

When the Cardinals experienced a good amount of turnover among their wide receivers, they turned to the transfer portal to address their need for bodies and experience. Tyler Hudson made the transition from the FCS level at Central Arkansas to Louisville after finishing fourth nationally in receiving yards with 1,242 on 62 catches in 2021. His height (6-foot-2) and experience will be key in helping to bolster Louisville's passing game. - Courier Journal

Whenever "the drive" is discussed from the 2021 Iron Bowl, usually it's in relation to Bryce Young and his Heisman moment. It makes sense, considering Young led the Alabama football offense on a 97-yard march down the field, capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds left. However, it was also a significant moment for the player on the receiving end of the catch that sent the game to overtime. Ja'Corey Brooks, then a freshman receiver, had only two catches before that game and no touchdowns. Then he became an Alabama hero.

Brooks hadn't spoken to the media until Monday because Alabama freshmen aren't usually made available to reporters, so much of his time at the podium was spent reflecting on that game. "I'm from Florida, so I didn't know how big the Iron Bowl was," Brooks said. "I just went out there and took it play by play. After I got to the sideline, (Jameson Williams) was telling me it was a great catch. During that play, I just tried to execute and do my job." Brooks not only made the catch but did so in a somewhat difficult fashion. Young placed the throw in a perfect window over Brooks' shoulder with a defensive back stuck to him in coverage. Brooks managed to stay in bounds as he secured the catch in the end zone. "In practice, Coach (Holmon Wiggins) tells us to get to the jugs machine multiple times a day," Brooks said. "It's really repetition. Just kept practicing that throughout the week." - Montgomery Advertiser

New Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire has announced is targeting about two weeks out from the Sept. 3 opener against Murray State to name a starting quarterback. "You know, I want to get to two scrimmages," McGuire said. "We've had a good spring now. They're way ahead in the playbook. And so there's no excuses." Senior Tyler Shough, who won the job last season after transferring from Oregon only to get injured four games into the season, is competing with sophomore Donovan Smith and redshirt freshman Behren Morton. Smith started Tech's final four games including the Liberty Bowl win over Mississippi State. - Dallas Morning News

  08/03/22 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

A good portion of Malik Cunningham's spring was devoted to getting him more comfortable passing in the pocket as opposed to being more prone to run. He showed progress in that during the spring and continued the work over the summer. Part of that was developing even more confidence in his receivers group, which was built both on and off the field. With more at his disposal, the hope is that Cunningham can do less while still being a dynamic, dual-threat quarterback for the Cardinals. Last year, Cunningham totaled a team-high 1,031 rushing yards - fifth-most in the ACC - becoming the second Cardinals quarterback to reach 1,000 rushing yards after Lamar Jackson accomplished the feat in 2016 and 2017. Cunningham also threw for 2,941 yards, becoming the second player in school history to eclipse 2,800 yards with 19 rushing and passing touchdowns in a season for a combined total of 39.

His numbers helped Louisville's total offense to rank No. 14 in the country, though it didn't always translate into wins for the squad. The Alabama native will have one last fall camp with the Cardinals to make the necessary adjustments to his game to not just help himself and preserve his longevity, but also to use the depth he has around him. "A lot of receivers that we're going to have this year didn't really play last year, didn't have really much production. A couple of them did, so just working on the things that I'm going to be doing in the game, simulate game-like stuff, just getting those throws in and working on all aspects of the game," Cunningham said of his offseason focus. "Moving in the pocket, throwing off platform, going through all my reads, checking down to the running backs, not looking to run - things like that." - Courier Journal

Louisville underwent five coaching changes during the offseason. The team brought back Nic Cardwell to coach the offensive line, in addition to hiring Wesley McGriff to coach the secondary and serve as co-defensive coordinator and Josh Stepp to take over the tight ends room. Greg Gasparato moved from coaching safeties to outside linebackers and Lance Taylor became the new offensive coordinator. It is Taylor's job to ramp up the receivers so quarterback Malik Cunningham can run less and pass more.   Two Louisville football players - guard Caleb Chandler and cornerback Kei'Trel Clark - have garnered high praise ahead of the upcoming season, appearing on the preseason All-ACC team. A redshirt senior and three-year starter, Chandler is picking up where he left off last year after being the Cardinals' first offensive lineman to earn All-ACC honors since 2019. He was one of the driving forces behind a Louisville offense that averaged 212.9 rushing yards per game, which ranked 22nd in the country. The conference nod was Chandler's third of the preseason accolade after being named to the Sporting News and Athlon Preseason All-American teams.

Clark, meanwhile is a two-time All-ACC performer who appeared in eight games before suffering a season-ending injury. The Richmond, Virginia, native registered 40 tackles and led the squad with three interceptions. He picked off a pair of passes in a 30-3 win over Eastern Kentucky and one against Florida State. As a sophomore in 2020, he closed the year with 36 tackles and was ranked second in the ACC and 12th nationally with 11 passes defensed. - Courier Journal
