  07/01/22 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Just as those leadership qualities in cultivating relationships are second nature to Malik Cunningham, so is being a mobile quarterback. As nice as it is to have another threat in the backfield, Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield wants to continue working on Cunningham's ability to throw in the pocket as opposed to taking off and running, emphasizing that during the spring when Cunningham was barred from escaping the pocket. It's something Cunningham has been improving for a while. In some ways, it also goes against his nature. "I actually played running back growing up, so the running part comes natural," he said. "I had to grow the passing ability, which I have over the past couple years just working with different guys and just believing in myself that I can be a quarterback and I just run it."

Last season, Cunningham led the ACC and was fourth in the country with 20 rushing touchdowns and became the program's second quarterback and 14th overall player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season with a team-high 1,031 yards. He threw for 2,941 yards with 19 more TDs through the air as well. That made him the second player in school history with at least 2,800 passing yards and 19 rushing and passing touchdowns in a season. Even with the outside time the Cardinals have spent getting to know each other, they've still been practicing at least twice a week. "This summer, I think, that's where they're gonna get their chemistry, throwing and catching all summer long," Satterfield said. "Malik's really confident in those guys and I think that's key. As a quarterback, you better have that confidence." - Courier Journal

  06/16/22 - Quincy RileyrSr/2025, Louisville, 5-11, 194 (DS#11 CB) + More +

A lack of bodies in the secondary did Louisville no favors in 2021. By the end of the 6-7 season, the Cardinals had given up 3,193 passing yards (fourth-most in the ACC), an average of 245.6 per game (fifth) and 20 touchdowns (10th). On the other side, team had 10 interceptions, led by cornerback Kei'Trel Clark's three. Head coach Scott Satterfield targeted experience in the offseason to address the problem. Out of the 13 players the Cardinals have signed from the transfer portal during the offseason, six are either a cornerback or safety.

"We needed to really get some more depth in the secondary last year," said Satterfield, who's going into his fourth year at the program's helm. "We had some injuries and then it really showed whenever young guys are having to play, so to have those guys, we got some experience coming in." U of L added two players with an ACC background in former Duke safety Jalen Alexander, who recorded five starts and 75 tackles in 2021, and former Florida State cornerback Jarvis Brownlee, a former four-star recruit from Miami who started in 11 of 12 games played last year for the Seminoles. Former Jacksonville State safety Nicario Harper also adds starting experience having started 12 of 13 games played in 2020. One of the Cardinals' biggest gets was former Middle Tennessee cornerback Quincy Riley, who 247Sport ranked as the No. 13 cornerback in the transfer portal. The Columbia, South Carolina, native totaled five interceptions in 2021, which was first in Conference USA and tied for fourth nationally, to go along with 33 tackles and nine pass breakups. - Courier Journal

  06/10/22 - Jack PlummerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 215 (DS#18 QB) + More +

The Bears brought in veteran Purdue QB Jack Plummer through the transfer portal to compete with redshirt frosh QB Kai Millner and redshirt soph Zach Johnson to take over for four year starter Chase Garbers. Plummer arrived on campus in January and has been participating in player led workouts. They also made a developmental add in the late signing period with the addition of Miami QB Fernando Mendoza and added two preferred walk-on QBs, one a transfer and one a prep. Plummer transferred to Cal via the transfer portal from Purdue, after playing in 21 games with 13 starts over the final three seasons of his four years with the Boilermakers, completing 319-of-492 passes (64.8%) for 3405 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 136.35 quarterback rating. - Bearinsider.com

  05/26/22 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Shough's first season in Lubbock was lackluster. The junior threw for six touchdowns and three interceptions before breaking his collarbone four games into the year. The arm talent is obvious, but the decision making was questionable at best during his short season. That pattern repeated itself in Texas Tech's spring game, where Shough through an all too familiar pick-six while projecting a throw to the sidelines. Shough needs to be better, and he can be. All eyes should be on No. 12 to be QB1 heading into August. - Dallas Morning News

  05/05/22 - Caleb ChandlerrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-4, 299 (DS#23 OG) + More +

Caleb Chandler has what it takes to be an NFL offensive lineman this year though he might not have been a first-round pick. The 6-foot-4 and 300-pound lineman is a versatile player but he's also very fundamentally sound. A first-team All-ACC honoree last season, Chandler returns with a lot of experience, but also NFL upside. He has the chance to vault himself into a high-end pick as well and be the first offensive lineman selected since Mekhi Becton went in the first round to the New York Jets. - Courier Journal

  05/05/22 - KeiTrel ClarkrJr/2023, Louisville, 5-10, 181 (DS#18 CB) + More +

Kei'Trel Clark was a player who could have declared for the 2021 draft, but he decided to return to Louisville after a season-ending knee injury. Clark will come back as one of the best corner backs in the ACC and a good draft prospect next season. In two years at Louisville he has 76 tackles, four interceptions and 12 pass deflections. He was more physical as a tackler last year before his injury, which was a question of concern going into the NFL Draft. - Courier Journal

  05/05/22 - Yasir AbdullahrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 237 (DS#9 OLB) + More +

Yasir Abdullah is a physical freak who could launch his NFL Draft stock into outer space this season. He was good in 2020 with three sacks, seven tackles for a loss and 33 tackles, but he was dominant last season with 61 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks. He returns as the best pass rusher in the ACC, only Florida State's Jermaine Johnson was better and he was drafted in the first round No. 26 overall in the NFL Draft on Thursday.

Abdullah has that type of upside with his athleticism and competitive drive. If he puts together another All-ACC year, he could compete for ACC Defensive Player of the Year and watch his stock rise. He could give Louisville two potential first-round picks if he and Clark play up to expectations. - Courier Journal

  05/03/22 - Jack PlummerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 215 (DS#18 QB) + More +

One of three key transfer portal additions in the offseason, 6-5/215 redshirt junior quarterback Jack Plummer finds himself in a strong position in his battle to take over as starting QB for departed 4-year starter Chase Garbers at Cal. The fifth-year QB from Gilbert, Arizona earned honorable mention All-USA Arizona honors as a 2017 senior, completing 195-of-335 passes (58.2%) for 2861 yards and 35 touchdowns with seven interceptions, while also rushing for 404 yards and eight additional touchdowns. "Out of high school, my top two were Purdue and South Carolina," said Plummer. "The Purdue connection started from my defensive coordinator in high school who played at Louisville with the Brohm's (former Louisville and current head coach and OC Jeff and Brian Brohm). He slid them my film and they were recruiting me the hardest. I thought it was a good fit playing for a head coach and offensive coordinator who both played quarterback in the NFL." Plummer started 13 games in his time at Purdue, completing 319-of-492 passes (64.8%) for 3405 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 136.35 quarterback rating. - Bearinsider.com

The identity of Tech's starting quarterback for the Liberty Bowl is an unanswered question. Tech quarterback Tyler Shough is not yet medically cleared to return from the broken collarbone he suffered Sept. 25 at Texas, running backs coach DeAndre Smith said Thursday. "We're still working through that," Smith said. "What you try to use bowl practices for is to evaluate the guys as you go. So we're going to evaluate them all through bowl prep, and then we'll make a decision later on down the road." Shough started Tech's first four games of the season, Henry Colombi the next five and Donovan Smith the past three. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
