  09/12/21 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Malik Cunningham ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Louisville, which cruised to a 30-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night. In guiding the Cardinals (1-1) to their first victory of the season, the redshirt junior quarterback completed 15-of-23 passes for 277 yards. He got some early help from special teams. Marvin Dallas recovered a muffed punt return at the Colonels 25, leading to Cunningham's first score, a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:27 left in the first quarter.

Braden Smith made it 13-0 with a 49-yard punt return for a score with 10:15 left in the first half. Cunningham would have had another touchdown, but freshman Ahmari Huggins-Bruce dropped the ball on the EKU 1 on what would have been a 95-yard touchdown pass with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter. The ball rolled into the endzone, and the Colonels recovered for a touchback. "It's unfortunate," Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said of Huggins-Bruce, who finished with a Louisville true freshman record 150 receiving yards on four catches. "He did the hard part. The heavy lifting was outrunning the whole defense. Then the easy part, anybody in this room could just carry the ball across the line, but… he still had a great night." - Louisville/AP College Football

  09/11/21 - Jack PlummerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 215 (DS#18 QB) + More +

Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer threw four touchdown passes in the first half, three to wide receiver David Bell, as the Boilermakers rolled over winless UConn 49-0 Saturday afternoon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium. After punting on its first possession, Purdue (2-0) scored touchdowns on each of its next five to take a 35-0 lead at halftime. "While things weren't as great as we wanted on the first series or two, we found a way to regroup and played well from there," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. The Boilermakers, a 34-point favorite by most sports books, scored two more touchdowns with their first two drives in the second half with many second-stringers in the lineup. Plummer completed 16 of his 20 passes, racking up 245 yards and four touchdowns. Bell caught six of the passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Both were replaced to start the second half.

In their first game under interim coach Lou Spanos, who took over Monday following Randy Edsall's abrupt retirement, the Huskies advanced inside Purdue's 20-yard line only once in the game. "We feel awful. Our team feels awful that we're not executing. We're just disappointed for our fans," Spanos said. "But our players, they're teammates to each other. We're getting closer as a team. Now, we've got to make sure it transfers on game day. We do good stuff in practice, but we have to do better on game day." UConn (0-3) has lost 28 of its last 29 games against FBS competition. "It was great to see our guys come through and do what we needed to do in this game," Brohm said. "When you face a team that's going through some adversity, you have to make sure your guys come ready to play and understand that on any given day anybody can win. That's college football." It was UConn's most lopsided shutout loss since a 49-0 loss to New Hampshire Nov. 7, 1931. - Purdue/AP College Football

  09/04/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Tyler Shough accounted for two touchdowns, Tahj Brooks rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and Texas Tech beat Houston 38-21 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Shough finished 17 of 24 for 231 yards passing with a touchdown and ran for another score in his debut for the Red Raiders. The Oregon transfer scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with eight minutes left in the third quarter to start a streak of 31-unanswered points for Texas Tech.

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said Shough was solid and had good eyes. "He saw what he needed to see and communicated it clearly," Wells said. "He was calm. … He was accurate and scrambled a little bit. I think the sky's the limit for him." Erik Ezukanma had seven catches for 179 yards for Texas Tech, which outgained Houston 376-251. Houston's Clayton Tune finished 27-of-38 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted four times. Nathaniel Dell caught seven passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  09/04/21 - Jack PlummerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 215 (DS#18 QB) + More +

Purdue coach Jeff Brohm promised to make changes heading into this season. On Saturday, it paid dividends. Now, he's hoping it keeps working. Jack Plummer threw for 313 yards and two late touchdowns while the Boilermakers' revamped defense made sure it held up for a 30-21 victory over Oregon State to cap the 500th game played at Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue has won 291 games since its home venue opened in 1924 and this one came in prime time and in front of the largest home crowd in 644 days - thanks largely to the Boilermakers defense. "I think they played really hard, tough, had a couple huge fourth-down stops," Brohm said. "We did what we had to do." It was good enough to snap a four-game losing streak and bring some relief to a program that hasn't played in a bowl game since 2018. The difference: Two fourth-down stops in the second half, which Purdue (1-0) converted into 10 points and Brohm's willingness to throw it deep late in the game. Plummer finished 29 of 41, sealing the victory with a 50-yard TD pass to a wide open Payne Durham with 2:09 left. - Purdue/AP College Football

  08/29/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

Kentucky quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood has received a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility to play this season at UCF, a team source told the Orlando Sentinel Friday night. Gatewood, who will wear the No. 7 for the Knights, according to the team's online roster, enrolled at UCF this past Monday after announcing his decision to transfer to the Orlando school last weekend.

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn, who originally coached Gatewood at Auburn in 2018 and 2019, called the quarterback "extremely talented" this week. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn, taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. - Orlando Sentinel

  08/28/21 - Jack PlummerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 215 (DS#18 QB) + More +

As Jeff Brohm looks to push Purdue's program forward after back-to-back losing seasons, he'll begin this important year with a starting quarterback who can add mobility while leaning on his experience. Jack Plummer features both and has earned the starting job for the Sept. 4 season-opener when the Boilermakers host Oregon State at Ross-Ade Stadium. Plummer won a close competition with Aidan O'Connell, last year's opening-day starter, and Austin Burton, a transfer from UCLA prior to last season but has yet to play. Just the threat of a running quarterback should help expand Brohm's offense to a different level. With struggles in the running game the last two seasons, the Boilermakers need a threat on the ground, even if it comes from the quarterback position.

The mobility of Plummer, along with Burton, has always been appealing to Brohm. The option of having a dual-threat at quarterback opens up Brohm's playbook and gives the offense an opportunity to keep defenses off-balanced and produce more big plays. Plummer will be asked to use his legs more in key situations - third down plays and in the red zone. "We think the quarterback position has to have that threat with the ball in his hands and the defense has to honor him and respect him," Brohm said. "It's something we always have to have in the game plan. "We feel like it has to be an option and we have to utilize it. Taking care of the football when that's being done and protecting yourself when you do run and get yards and get positive plays and get down when you have to. If the down and distance require you to go get the first down, that's what you have to do." - Journal and Courier

  08/27/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn addressed the addition of quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood to the Knights football program on Tuesday and had high praise for his former player at Auburn. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." Gatewood, who is now officially listed on the team's roster online, announced his decision to transfer to UCF over social media and enrolled at the university on Monday. Gatewood will the wear the uniform No. 7 for UCF according to the roster.

Although he's part of the team and enrolled, it's unclear if Gatewood will be able to earn eligibility to play this season at UCF. The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year, Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix, and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. Last year for the Wildcats, Gatewood played in seven games, rushing 25 times for 62 yards and completing 17-of-35 passes for 109 yards with one interception after becoming eligible to play on Sept. 30. Because he's transferred once before, Gatewood needs to apply for a waiver to see the field this season for the Knights due to NCAA rules. "He's not eligible now," Malzahn said. "We'll look at waivers and all that, see what that looks like in the future." - Orlando Sentinel

  08/26/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells on Tuesday officially named Tyler Shough to be the Red Raiders' starting quarterback, confirming an outcome that had been expected for weeks. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior from Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton transferred to Tech in March from Oregon, where he started all seven games the Ducks played last season. He's been competing primarily with Henry Colombi, who started four games for the Red Raiders last season and was a 1,000-yard passer. The others in the conversation since training camp began have been redshirt freshman Donovan Smith from Frenship and true freshman Behren Morton from Eastland, the latter a consensus state top-50 signee.

The Red Raiders also have two-time NJCAA passing leader Parker McNeil, who came to Tech as a walk-on transfer from Troy, and former state top-100 recruit Maverick McIvor. "As I've said for several months now, this is the most talented our quarterback room has been since we arrived here at Texas Tech," Wells said in a statement Tech released. "After evaluating the entire body of work, we feel as a staff that Tyler gives this team the best chance to win. He is well-respected by his teammates, a tireless worker and has developed a strong understanding of what we want to do as an offense. "Tyler's arrival has only increased the competitiveness of our quarterback room as Henry Colombi has put together possibly the best camp of his career. Our staff has confidence in Henry's ability to lead this offense, and I know he will continue to prepare with the same mindset. Donovan and Behren both have bright futures here at Texas Tech, and they will continue to battle for backup reps." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

  08/25/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

Another former Auburn player will be joining Gus Malzahn at UCF. Quarterback Joey Gatewood, who started his career on the Plains before transferring to Kentucky, announced Sunday afternoon that he has committed to UCF following his departure from Lexington, Ky. Gatewood entered the transfer portal Aug. 15 after Kentucky coach Mark Stoops named Will Levis as the Wildcats' starting quarterback for the 2021 season. "Fired up about the opportunity and ready to get to work," Gatewood said in a tweet announcing his decision.

A former four-star prospect in the 2018 class, Gatewood was rated as the No. 49 overall recruit in the country coming out of Bartram Trail High in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the highest-rated signee for Auburn in that recruiting class, and he redshirted during the 2018 season while serving as the Tigers' third-team quarterback behind Jarrett Stidham and Malik Willis. Gatewood appeared in just one game as a true freshman, rushing for 28 yards in Auburn's Music City Bowl win against Purdue at the end of the season. - Birmingham News

  08/24/21 - Storm DuckrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-0, 195 (DS#55 CB) + More +

North Carolina sophomore Storm Duck hasn't played a meaningful snap since being injured in the second game of last season at Boston College. When he left the lineup, he was the Tar Heels' shut down corner. As he returns healthy and practicing again, UNC cornerbacks coach Dre Bly believes Duck could actually be better than he was the last time he played in a game. "He was a guy that we felt like could take away a side of the field," Bly said. "But that didn't come because of the skill set, that came because of where he was mentally and the knowledge that he had gained through being a starter his first year. He didn't lose that." Duck said he doesn't dwell on the injuries that have kept him out of the lineup citing his faith for not letting them get him down. He said there haven't been any lingering effects so he hasn't had a major transition period once he got cleared to return to practice. "As far as like the physical aspect, coming to work, I haven't lost a step or anything," Duck said. "I feel like I'm getting out of breaks really good and just being who I was in the beginning -- being a better player than that." - Raleigh News Observer

  08/22/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

It may seem daring to claim that someone who's been slotted as a top pick in the 2022 NFL draft will be better than advertised. But even with all the buzz that Shough has created, he's been met with cautious optimism from Red Raider fans. The quarterback position at Texas Tech has been a lackluster revolving door since the Patrick Mahomes Era. But after a handful of grim seasons in Lubbock, Shough appears to have the tools to take the program's offense back to something that resembles its glory days.

He looks the part of an NFL quarterback, standing at 6-5 and weighing in at 220 pounds. He threw for 1,559 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions last season - numbers that display the talent of his arm, and also the room for improvement in areas like decision making. His legs are serviceable, something new offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie will likely utilize. Behind an experienced offensive line and with reliable targets at receiver, Shough should have a much-improved campaign this season. Expect Texas Tech to have their first 3,000+ passing yard QB for the first time in Matt Wells' tenure. - Dallas Morning News

  08/22/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

Former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood is now looking for a third school. Gatewood will enter the NCAA transfer portal for a second time, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said on Sunday. Stoops named Will Levis the Wildcats' starting quarterback for the Sept. 4 season-opener vs. Louisiana-Monroe, adding that Gatewood had chosen to leave the program. "I told him how much I appreciated how hard he's worked. I know he's been through this before so I knew it would be especially tough. Tough decision, not what he wanted to hear," Stoops said, via 247 Sports. "We had that discussion, had a good talk. He handled it completely professional and really appreciate him." Gatewood left Auburn in middle of the 2019 season after losing out to then-freshman Bo Nix for the starting quarterback job, and transferred to Kentucky the following January. He played in six games for the Wildcats in 2020 - starting a 14-3 loss to Georgia - completing 17 of 35 passes for 109 yards and an interception while also rushing for 62 yards on 25 carries. - Herald Leader

  08/10/21 - Marshon FordrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 220 (DS#6 FB) + More +

Louisville's star tight end Marshon Ford is a local product shining on the national stage for his hometown team. In two years, after walking on and earning a scholarship with the Cardinals, Ford has scored 13 touchdowns. The Ballard graduate has made his mark at the high school and college level athletically and now the latest NIL legislation is allowing him to make his mark on local businesses. Ford has signed a partnership with Dan-O Seasoning according to Danny Mosby, who is representing Ford. They also worked on a Tik Tok commercial filmed at Ballard High School, Friday afternoon. "I am blessed to team up with a local company that's doing huge things, in Dano's Seasoning," Ford said. "I look forward to our partnership, growing together, and representing Louisville to the best of our ability." "We are thrilled to announce our partnership and officially welcome Marshon to the 'Dan' Family," said Meredith Lawrence, executive vice president of Dan-O's Seasoning. "We love supporting hometown heroes! Marshon's hard work and dedication is inspiring, and we look forward to working together" - Courier Journal

  08/09/21 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

The most important player for the Louisville football team to have success in 2021 starts with "QB1" himself. There is no quarterback battle. His starting job is not in jeopardy. Malik Cunningham will be the starting quarterback when the Cardinals take the field in Atlanta in the season opener against Ole Miss. Cunningham hasn't always had it easy. He had to be a quarterback under arguably the biggest shadow ever. Heisman Trophy winner and NFL superstar Lamar Jackson. Despite odds being against him at times with coaching changes and more, he's been really good for U of L. Passing for 5,153 career yards and 43 touchdowns and rushing for 1,588 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career proves how good he's been. Turnovers were an issue in 2020, but I don't think that will be an issue this year. How far will this team go in 2021? A big answer to that question will be on how Cunningham plays. - Courier Journal
