  07/03/21 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Thursday is the first day of the NIL era and multiple Louisville athletes have announced deals already. Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham is partnered with an online service called Dreamfield.co allows athletes to set appearance fees for autograph sessions and more. Cunningham was originally listed on the website with a $275 per hour fee, but it bumped up to $300 around noon. Defensive lineman Dezmond Tell is also on Dreamfield.com and has a fee of $70 per hour. - Courier Journal

  06/21/21 - C.J. AveryrSr/2022, Louisville, 6-0, 230 (DS#42 ILB) + More +

Louisville linebacker C.J. Avery has played 46 games in his four-year college career. In January, he decided he wanted to play at least 12 more and announced his return to Louisville, using the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted athletes due to COVID-19. That was terrific news for a Louisville football team already losing Dorian Etheridge at inside linebacker to the NFL Draft. Avery enters this season as the unquestioned leader of the defense.

He returns after leading the team in tackles in 2019 (93 in 13 games) and in 2020 (78 in 11 games). More than the stats, though, Avery brings a calm and focused demeanor to the field and gives the Louisville coaching staff a player it can rely on the entire game. Returning for a year also gives the Grenada, Mississippi, native a chance to reach the goals he set for himself. "I wanted to end my time here on the right note," Avery said. "I felt like coming back would be the best choice for myself and my family. I wanted to put myself in a better position of trying to achieve my dreams next season." - Courier Journal

  06/13/21 - Malik CunninghamrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-0, 200 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Between running back Javian Hawkins and wide receivers Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell, it is replacing 2,280 yards and 17 touchdowns from a season ago. In the last two years, the three combined for 5,716 yards and 44 touchdowns However, two players return with multiple years of starting experience and more than two touchdowns in Scott Satterfield's offense: tight end Marshon Ford and quarterback Malik Cunningham.

At times last year, Cunningham looked like a one-man offense with 2,617 passing yards, 609 rushing yards, 20 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns. As Louisville begins to transition its offense to a host of new playmakers, Cunningham has taken an even bigger leadership role on the offense. One that he thinks he's embraced this offseason and helped hold himself accountable. "Those guys feed off my energy so if they see me up and ready to go, they're going to work harder and put their best foot forward," he said. "If I'm down, they'll come over and check on me - which I'm never down - but if I am having a long day they'll check on me." - Courier Journal

  06/12/21 - Willie TylerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-6, 310 (DS#50 OT) + More +

Texas transfer Willie Tyler has decommitted from the Syracuse football program, he announced on Friday. Tyler, a 6-foot-7, 335-pound offensive guard, shared his news in a post on Twitter. He could not be immediately reached for comment. "I want to say thank you to Syracuse and the coaching staff for the opportunity to play there! I have decided to decommit," Tyler wrote. I want to say thank you to Syracuse and the coaching staff for the opportunity to play there! Tyler received a scholarship offer from Syracuse on Jan. 19 and almost a week later his primary recruiter, former SU offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh, took a job at Arizona State. Despite the personnel shift, Tyler committed to the program in April due to his relationship with the Orange's new OL coach Mike Schmidt. - The Post-Standard

  05/09/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

The Wildcats closed down spring practices completely to the media, so there's a bit of speculation involved here. However, the time does seem to be ripe for redshirt junior Joey Gatewood, the Auburn signee who mostly sat behind Bo Nix in 2019 and then got minimal time behind Terry Wilson at Kentucky last year. Wilson, the only player in Kentucky history with 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, is using his bonus year of eligibility granted by the NCAA at New Mexico.

Gatewood has a sturdy 6-5, 221-pound frame and is the kind of dual-threat signal caller that looks ideal for newly installed offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who came over from a role as assistant quarterbacks coach with the Los Angeles Rams. Gatewood made one start last season, completing a check-down laden 15 of 25 passes for 91 yards while rushing for 23 yards against Georgia. His ascension to a starting role isn't etched in stone. Redshirt freshman Beau Allen is also in the mix, and Penn State transfer Will Levis, also a run-pass threat, will join the competition over the summer. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/28/21 - Jacques TurnerrSr/2022, Louisville, 6-1, 290 (DS#999 DT) + More +

One day after adding the first player to the 2022 class, Louisville has added an impact transfer, as well. Former Southern Mississippi defensive tackle Jacques Turner entered his name into the transfer portal last week and committed to Louisville on Sunday afternoon. This fills a position of need for the Cardinals. After Jared Goldwire declared for the NFL Draft, Louisville had a major hole in the middle of its defense line. Turner, who had 45 tackles and six sacks in 2019, expects to be a player to help there and throughout the defensive line. Turner, in his three years at Southern Miss, tallied 100 tackles, 31.5 tackles for a loss and 15 sacks. The 6-foot-1 and 289-pound transfer will join Dezmond Tell, Malik Clark, Jared Dawson and Henry Bryant at the interior defensive line position. - Courier Journal

  04/18/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

As soon as Tyler Shough's name hit the NCAA transfer portal, the suitors lined up for the Oregon quarterback. In a process where things like personal relationships and geography play big roles, Shough choose Texas Tech as his next landing spot. He had met coach Matt Wells - once - at a high school recruiting camp when Wells was still at Utah State. That's about it. "I did my own research on the coaching staff here and the guys," Shough said recently, "but I didn't really have any connection." The bigger question is about the connection that Shough has developed, with Tech's spring scrimmage set for Saturday in Lubbock and the quarterback competition still in progress.

In a crowded quarterback room, Shough and Henry Colombi, who started four games last season, bring the most experience. Like so many coaches, Wells is not handicapping the race outside of what he wants in a quarterback. Wells says he values their leadership and accuracy, while holding greater regard for accuracy over arm strength. The decision is likely to come in preseason camp and has major ramifications for the program. Tech hasn't had a winning football season since 2015 and hasn't been .500 or better in the Big 12 since 2009, Mike Leach's final season in Lubbock. - Dallas Morning News

  04/12/21 - Willie TylerrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-6, 310 (DS#50 OT) + More +

Willie Tyler, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman, will transfer from Texas to play football at Syracuse University, he announced Thursday. Tyler, a 6-foot-7, 335-pound lineman, opted not to participate in the 2020 season because of the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. As a senior at Racine Lutheran (Wisconsin), Tyler recorded 45 tackles (23 solo), 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three blocked kicks and two interceptions as a defensive lineman in 2016. He was rated three stars coming out of high school, according to 247Sports. Tyler previously told Syracuse.com he decided to transfer from Texas because he was looking for an opportunity somewhere he can make an impact. He has three years of eligibility remaining. - The Post-Standard

  04/07/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Covering more than 1,200 miles, all on the road from Oregon to Arizona, gives a man plenty of time to think. Time to hear recruiting pitches. Time to ask questions. Time to choose where to take the next turn on the road. All those hours are welcome if you're a high-profile player in college football's NCAA transfer portal. That's where Tyler Shough found himself in mid-February: in the portal, on the road, hearing his cell phone buzz. Something about Matt Wells and Sonny Cumbie, the research Shough had done on the Texas Tech coaches and the Red Raiders' roster, persuaded him more than anything else. "It was a long process," Shough said this past week.

"That was when I was driving back from Oregon to Arizona, a 21-hour car ride. I was pretty much on the phone that entire time. It really came down to...the opportunity to come in and compete, a coaching staff I had a good relationship with and a good supporting cast around me. "It obviously wasn't an easy decision, because there were a lot of schools that had that offer (extended), but Texas Tech was the best opportunity and overall team that I wanted to be a part of and wanted to grow in. So I'm definitely happy with it and excited to get better." Shough, who started all seven games Oregon played last year during his sophomore season, joined his new team two weeks ago. The Red Raiders have had nine of the allotted 15 sessions of spring practice, Shough having arrived in time to take part in the past seven. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound junior finished degree requirements at Oregon in March. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

  04/03/21 - YaYa DiabyrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-3, 263 (DS#11 DE) + More +

A newcomer last season, Diaby was an impact player for the Cardinals when he was on the field. He tallied 18 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in eight games. He missed a few games with an injury and was also part of the defensive line that was out due to COVID-19 protocols. That set him back, he said. But he came into the spring with a new mentality and it's helped him. "I just put in my mind that last season as not a big season for me. I had to adjust myself and tell myself that I needed to come this spring with a better mentality and eager to play and perform better for my team," Diaby said. Diaby is a lock to start at defensive end again next season, barring any kind of injury, and Ivey expects a lot out of the Atlanta native.

He's added about 12 pounds of muscle, but has been more explosive and agile throughout the practices. "I expect an outrageous year out of Yaya as long as he keeps competing like he is," Ivey said. "In my opinion he's one of the guys that is in the hunt for conference and whatever it is. He should be an amazing player this year." Entering the 2021 season, his redshirt junior year, Diaby has high hopes of himself, as well. He knows in order to accomplish those goals, he has to put the work in starting now. By all accounts, he's done just that. "I feel like I've been more consistent and that's all I've been trying to be. Be more consistent, violent and come off the ball strong," he said. - Courier Journal

  03/24/21 - Tyler ShoughrSr/2025, Louisville, 6-5, 219 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Texas Tech announced Monday that former Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough has arrived on campus and will be in uniform with the Red Raiders when they resume spring practice on Tuesday. Shough announced on Feb. 12 that he was having his name put into the NCAA transfer portal and committed to Tech on Feb. 22, but still had to earn a degree at Oregon to leave as a graduate transfer. He completed coursework this month with dual undergraduate degrees in criminal justice and political science, Tech's announcement said. Tech had its first two spring workouts last week and has 13 of the allotted 15 remaining. When former Tech starter Alan Bowman departed as a transfer, it left the Red Raiders with four-game starter Henry Colombi and a cast of talented but inexperienced candidates at quarterback.

Shough, a nationally sought recruit three years ago, started all seven games Oregon played last season. "We're excited to add a quarterback with Tyler's ability and experience to our quarterback room," Red Raiders coach Matt Wells said in Tech's announcement. "I'm looking forward to watching all of our quarterbacks compete this spring under coach (Sonny) Cumbie, and Tyler will only help in making that position better." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

  03/24/21 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

Only one of the quarterbacks currently on campus, Joey Gatewood, has started a game for UK. Beau Allen made brief appearances in two separate games last year. Reading much of anything into how they performed last season is somewhat trivial; they're getting a crash course this spring in new offensive coordinator Liam Coen's system, which puts an increased premium on footwork and has them taking snaps predominantly under center rather than in a shotgun formation. Through three practices, they've adapted well. "Our quarterbacks, they really know where to go with the football," head coach Mark Stoops said following Saturday's scrimmage, in which players wore pads. "Our completion percentage is extremely high, which I really like to see. Very few drops, very few footballs on the ground. I'm pleased with what I'm seeing."

Gatewood is not a stranger to learning a new offense or coaching at the quarterback position. At Auburn, where he played eight games between the 2018 and 2019 seasons before transferring to Kentucky, he had two offensive coordinators: Chip Lindsey, who left to become the head coach at Troy following the 2018 season, and Kenny Dillingham, who bolted for Florida State following the 2019 campaign. Coen is Gatewood's fourth coordinator in as many seasons at the college level. "From Auburn to Kentucky, Kentucky last season to now with a new OC, I'm putting everything together and really just trying to make it one," Gatewood said. "I feel like if I could get that done and I keep on striving every day as well as my teammates with me, I think we'll be pretty good." - Herald Leader

  03/18/21 - Shai WertsrSr/2022, Louisville, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Former Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts decided at the end of his fourth year of starting in Statesboro that it was time for change. Werts knew that if he was to have a better chance at a job in the NFL, he needed to switch positions. The Louisville Cardinals sat at the ready to pluck him from the transfer portal, led by wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer, who had been waiting to coach Werts since 2016, when Brewer was in the same position at North Carolina. "I had the pleasure of recruiting him at North Carolina, along with a lot of other Power Five and ACC schools that wanted him to play receiver at that time," Brewer said. "He wanted to live the dream playing quarterback, and I don't blame him, went to a place that really fit him well."

Brewer was full of praise for Werts' work ethic and knowledge of the game, saying he was a great fit for the Cardinals. Werts made good as a quarterback at GS, guiding the Eagles to three bowl games and earning MVP awards in the 2018 Camellia Bowl victory against Eastern Michigan and in the 2020 New Orleans Bowl win over Louisiana Tech. Werts finished his GS career with 3,777 yards passing, 3,083 rushing and 68 total touchdowns in the Eagles' run-first option offense. - Savannah Morning News

  03/13/21 - Kenderick DuncanrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 217 (DS#22 SS) + More +

When Kenderick Duncan Jr. entered the transfer portal, he was worried about starting over. A redshirt junior at Georgia Southern, Duncan was an All-Sun Belt Conference player for the Eagles. Still, he decided to enter the transfer portal after the 2020 season and found his place at Louisville with defensive coordinator Bryan Brown. In Brown's system, Duncan feels comfortable because it's similar to what he ran at Georgia Southern. "After talking to coach Brown and coach (Scott) Satterfield, it made me feel that if I come to Louisville, I will be at home," Duncan said. "I don't have to feel out of place. I won't feel like a random kid. They treat me like I was part of the family. They made me feel welcome and we adapted to everything."

On paper, it was a perfect partnership. Duncan gets his chance to play Power 5 football and Louisville gets a safety with in-game experience to lead the backend of its secondary. A few months into the change, Duncan has impressed many people at Louisville through his play on the field - and off. "He looks it but he also plays like it," Brown said. "He's a smart cat that understands what we are doing. He was in a similar defense before so he's able to teach our younger guys calls and checks." - Savannah Morning News
