UCF head coach Gus Malzahn addressed the addition of quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood to the Knights football program on Tuesday and had high praise for his former player at Auburn. "First of all, Joey is an excellent human being," Malzahn said about Gatewood. "He's a very talented young man that obviously I coached before." Gatewood, who is now officially listed on the team's roster online, announced his decision to transfer to UCF over social media and enrolled at the university on Monday. Gatewood will the wear the uniform No. 7 for UCF according to the roster.

Although he's part of the team and enrolled, it's unclear if Gatewood will be able to earn eligibility to play this season at UCF. The Bartram Trail product began his college career at Auburn under Malzahn taking a redshirt as a freshman in 2018. The following year, Gatewood lost out on the starting quarterback spot to then-freshman Bo Nix, and decided to transfer to Kentucky for the 2020 season. Last year for the Wildcats, Gatewood played in seven games, rushing 25 times for 62 yards and completing 17-of-35 passes for 109 yards with one interception after becoming eligible to play on Sept. 30. Because he's transferred once before, Gatewood needs to apply for a waiver to see the field this season for the Knights due to NCAA rules. "He's not eligible now," Malzahn said. "We'll look at waivers and all that, see what that looks like in the future." - Orlando Sentinel
