  11/19/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

The College Football Playoff rankings were unchanged at the top this week, with LSU first followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia. The selection committee's third weekly rankings had little movement in the top 10, with Alabama fifth followed by Oregon, Utah, Penn State, Oklahoma and Minnesota. The committee could face an interesting decision with Alabama in the coming weeks. The Crimson Tide lost quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for the season to a hip injury Saturday. Alabama faces Western Carolina this weekend, so playing backup Mac Jones shouldn't make much difference. On Thanksgiving weekend, the Tide will face Auburn with its No. 2 quarterback, which should give the committee a better read on what kind of a team Alabama is now.

"We do not look forward," said committee chairman Rob Mullens, who is also Oregon's athletic director. "Our charge is to rank the teams based on their body of work through week 12, and that's what we did. Obviously, we'll watch the games moving forward and evaluate them after that." Minnesota and Baylor, both of which lost for the first time last weekend, dropped in the rankings. Minnesota went from eighth to 10th after losing at Iowa. Baylor slipped from 13th to 14th after blowing a 25-point lead to Oklahoma. Ohio State and Penn State play this weekend in a game that could essentially eliminate the Nittany Lions from the playoff race. - AP College Football

  11/17/19 - Jabril CoxrSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 232 (DS#6 OLB) + More +

North Dakota State was down two starting linebackers Saturday against the University South Dakota. Strong side linebacker Jabril Cox and weak side linebacker Aaron Mercadel were not in uniform for the Bison's 49-14 victory over the Coyotes in Missouri Valley Football Conference play at the Fargodome.

Cox, a junior, left last week's game against Western Illinois and sat out against the Coyotes in what Bison head coach Matt Entz said was "a swollen knee." Entz said Cox could have played against USD if the game was more in the line of a "one-and-done" playoff scenario. - Inforum

Alabama is fifth in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, behind LSU, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia, which took over the fourth spot in the selection committee's second top 25. LSU replaced Ohio State as No. 1 on Tuesday night after the Tigers won at Alabama on Saturday. The Buckeyes were bumped to No. 2. Clemson moved up two spots to No. 3 after two teams ahead of the Tigers lost for the first time last week, including Alabama. The Crimson Tide fell to 46-41 to LSU and dropped two spots. Penn State, which had been No. 4, lost 31-26 at Minnesota and fell to ninth. The unbeaten Gophers climbed nine spots to eighth, the largest one-week jump in the six-year history of the College Football Playoff.

Georgia moved up two spots to give the Southeastern Conference two of the top four for the second straight week. Selection committee chairman Rob Mullens, the Oregon athletic director, said Georgia's loss to South Carolina (4-6) was noted by the committee, but the Bulldogs' victories against No. 11 Florida and No. 16 Notre Dame pushed them past Alabama. Oregon was sixth and fellow Pac-12 team Utah was seventh. Oklahoma, the highest-ranked Big 12 team at No. 10, dropped a spot after a one-point victory against Iowa State. The Sooners face 13th-ranked Baylor on Saturday. The Bears are the lowest-ranked unbeaten team. - AP College Football

Clyde Edwards-Helaire had seemingly sealed one of the most satisfying victories in the history of LSU football with a tackle-breaking touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Back on the sideline as delirious Tigers fans began to celebrate in Bryant-Denny Stadium, Edwards-Helaire could hardly control his emotions. The junior running back who grew up 20 minutes from Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was practically sobbing as he hugged an assistant coach. His work was not yet done, though. Just like that, Alabama scored again. LSU needed another first down to finally put an end to an eight-game losing streak against its SEC West rival. The Tigers gave the ball to Edwards-Helaire and the 5-foot-8, 209-pounder powered for 12 yards. Game over. "It was just an overwhelming feeling," Edwards-Helaire said.

Justifiably, quarterback Joe Burrow was hailed as the hero of LSU's 46-41 victory against Alabama on Saturday, but the contributions of the Tigers' diminutive workhorse could not be understated. Edwards-Helaire carried 20 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns, and he led the team with nine catches for 77 yards and another score. Time and again, the former three-star recruit made plays that stemmed the Tide's attempt at a comeback. "He creates such a matchup disadvantage for the defense," Burrow said. "He runs great routes. Then you also have to stop him on the downhill runs. He's going to play for a long time." LSU has built its offense around powerful tailbacks in recent years, from Jeremy Hill to Leonard Fournette to Derrius Guice. Edwards-Helaire, who followed Guice at Cathlolic High School in Baton Rouge, has a different skill set -- one that fits perfectly into LSU's new offense. "I came into this year, kinda the starter," Edwards-Helaire said. "Solidified myself, being able to play in these games. Week in and week out, always being doubted. Come in, probably be doubted again next week. But that's something that motivates me." - AP College Football

The LSU-Alabama game drew 16.636 million viewers for CBS, making it the most-watched college football game of the season. CBS said LSU's 46-41 victory against Alabama, a matchup of the AP Top 25's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, scored a 9.7 rating, the highest for any regular-season college football game on any network in eight years. The Tigers and Crimson Tide kicked off in the afternoon for the first time since 2010 because CBS had used its one night game on Notre Dame-Georgia in September. That was the previous most-watched game of the season at 9.349 million viewers. Overall, the "SEC on CBS" is having its best year through 11 weeks since 1990, averaging 7.091 viewers. That's up 39% from last year's 5.088 million. - AP College Football

Joe Burrrow sprinted toward the LSU fans to celebrate a monumental victory, and moments later was hoisted on the shoulders of two beefy teammates. They carried him only partway across the field. The ride isn't finished for Burrow and No. 1 LSU but the quarterback's masterful performance Saturday in a 46-41 victory over nemesis and second-ranked Alabama marked a huge step toward the Tigers' championship goals. Burrow passed for 393 yards and three touchdowns, answered challenge after challenge and helped end the eight-year string of futility that started with the national title game in January 2012. Now, their sights are set on another shot at national and Southeastern Conference championships.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron said that for the first time he told his players pre-Alabama, "You're the better team." "We've finally got the tools that we need to beat those guys," Orgeron said. "To have a championship team, you've got to have a championship quarterback." The Tigers (9-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference, No. 2 CFP) are no longer second fiddle in the SEC West, or maybe in the playoff rankings. And Burrow stamped himself as the Heisman Trophy front-runner with a gutty performance when he answered every challenge from `Bama. And the challenges were plentiful. That came as no surprise to Burrow. "I knew they were going to come back," he said. "That's Alabama on the other side, dynasty. I was really happy with the way we responded." - LSU/AP College Football

Joe Burrow passed for 393 yards and three touchdowns and No. 1 LSU snapped an eight-game losing streak to No. 2 Alabama with a 46-41 victory Saturday. The Tigers (9-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference, No. 2 CFP) are no longer second fiddle in the SEC West, or maybe in the playoff rankings. And Burrow stamped himself as the Heisman Trophy front-runner with a gutty performance when he answered every challenge from `Bama. The Crimson Tide (8-1, 5-1, No. 3 CFP) rallied from a 33-13 halftime deficit to three times to pull within a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The showdown lived up to its billing as a duel between two high-powered offenses and star quarterbacks with President Donald Trump attending. Tua Tagovailoa launched an 85-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith with 1:21 left after the Tigers' own scoring march. Justin Jefferson recovered the onside kick and LSU ran out the clock. Burrow completed 31 of 39 passes and ran for 64 yards. Clyde Edwards Helaire ran for three touchdowns and caught a scoring pass. Tagovailoa, 20 days removed from ankle surgery, was 21 of 40 for 418 yards and four touchdowns with an interception and a fumble. - LSU/AP College Football
