  11/04/19 - Michael Divinity Jr.Sr/2020, LSU, 6-2, 242 (DS#20 ILB) + More +

LSU coach Ed Orgeron says pass-rushing outside linebacker Michael Divinity has left the team for personal reasons. The announcement on Monday of Divinity's departure comes just six days before the No. 1 Tigers travel to second-ranked Alabama on Saturday in a clash of unbeaten teams with College Football Playoff implications. While Divinity tied for the team lead in sacks in 2018, he has played a reduced role this season because of the return of top edge pass rusher K'Lavon Chaisson and the emergence of Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen at inside linebacker spots. Divinity also has missed three games. Divinity had three sacks and a forced fumble in the five games he has played this season. Orgeron says LSU "should be fine" because Chaisson takes the majority of snaps at the position Divinity also plays, and the coach expressed confidence in backups Andre Anthony and Ray Thornton. Orgeron also says he won't "close the door" on the possibility of Divinity returning this season. - AP College Football

  10/27/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

The No. 1 vs. No. 2 game between Alabama and LSU in two weeks looks set, though the order of the Crimson Tide and Tigers changed in the AP Top 25 in one of the closet votes ever. Heading into an off date for both teams, LSU flip-flopped with Alabama on Sunday to become the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll presented by Regions Bank. The Tigers received 1,476 points, two more than Alabama, for the closest margin between 1 and 2 since No. 1 Florida State was two points ahead of Auburn on Oct. 5, 2014.

No. 3 Ohio State was not far behind with 1,468 points. Eight points separating first from third is the fewest during a regular-season poll since the current point system went into place in 1978. The previous low was Dec. 3, 1979, when No. 1 Ohio State was 10 points ahead of No. 3 Southern California, with Oklahoma in between, two back of the Buckeyes. Alabama received the most first-place votes this week with 21. LSU and Ohio State both got 17 first-place votes. No. 4 Clemson received seven first-place votes. There have now been three No. 1 teams this season and none of them have lost. - AP College Football

  10/27/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow bounced up immediately from a high-speed hit that looked like it could have given the LSU quarterback whiplash as he was sent crashing into the Auburn bench area. Trotting resolutely back to the line of scrimmage, Burrow resumed his school-record eighth career 300-yard passing performance in a tense, top-10 clash that put a premium on grit and perseverance. Burrow passed for 321 yards and a touchdown, ran for 47 yards and another score, and second-ranked LSU edged No. 9 Auburn 23-20 on Saturday. The victory ensured LSU would be unbeaten heading into its highly anticipated Nov. 9 tilt at Alabama, which entered this weekend ranked No. 1. - AP College Football

"If your quarterback shows toughness like that, it can kind of get your team going," Burrow said. "If you lay down on the field and don't hop right back up, it shows your team that you are not really into it."

The victory ensured LSU (8-0, 4-0 SEC) would be unbeaten heading into its highly anticipated Nov. 9 tilt at Alabama, which entered this weekend ranked No. 1. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 136 yards and touchdown for LSU, which wasn't able to put away Auburn (6-2, 3-2) until Derrick Dillon recovered an onside kick with 2:31 left. "It was a gut check tonight," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said, praising the way his players stuck together. "They didn't want to be denied." While LSU's prolific, up-tempo spread offense rolled up 508 yards, the unit didn't approach its 50.1-point scoring average against an Auburn defense that thwarted LSU drives into its territory with a pair of fourth-down stops and an interception. "They fought their guts out and our defense played unbelievable," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "We had opportunities and we didn't seize the moment. We just didn't get it done offensively." - LSU/AP College Football

  10/22/19 - *Grant DelpitJr/2020, LSU, 6-2, 213 (DS#1 SS) + More +

Grant Delpit's numbers are down this season compared to the big-play bonanza he produced during his 2018 All-America campaign -- and that makes perfect sense to fellow LSU safety Jacoby Stevens. "He's a unanimous All-American, so a lot of people aren't going to test him," Stevens said. "Stats don't tell the whole game. He can shut down a whole side of the field," Stevens added, noting that opposing teams apparently weren't fooled by Delpit's jersey switch this year from No. 9 to No. 7. "You can see it on film sometimes. Quarterbacks kind of look and they see 7 and they just go the other way. He can't get a stat on that. He's a good ball player. He hasn't changed."

While a big year statistically would help Delpit's already considerable NFL draft credentials next spring, he can appreciate that having a big year individually can still be unsatisfying if team goals aren't met. This season, Delpit has one interception, one fumble recovery, no sacks, 1 + tackles for loss and four passes defended through seven games. But LSU is unbeaten, ranked second in the Top 25 poll and very much in the CFP conversation. "I'm pretty tough on myself to make a lot of plays. But I kind of understand you can't make all the plays, all the tackles and all the interceptions," Delpit said. "Just as long as I'm doing my job, as long as we're playing great as a defense, it doesn't matter who makes the play or anything like that - just as long as we win." LSU coach Ed Orgeron calls Delpit "very unselfish." - AP College Football

  10/19/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Joe Burrow didn't necessarily show his best side Saturday. While being dragged to the ground by his pants during his third sack of the game, the LSU quarterback's rear end was briefly exposed. "I heard there was supposed to be a full moon in Starkville tonight," Burrow joked. The rest of his performance was anything but obscene. Burrow threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns to break the LSU season record with 29 in the No. 2 Tigers' 36-13 victory over Mississippi State. "It's a testament to him, the receivers, the offensive line, the coaches," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. "But we're just getting started. Our team is not satisfied." In his postgame comments, Burrows placed himself squarely in that category.

"If we play like this next week (versus No. 11 Auburn), we'll lose," Burrow said. "I think we're going to have to execute much better in the red zone than we did this week, because I don't think we'll get as many chances." On paper, it's hard to find fault in the final results. LSU (7-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) had 415 yards of total offense and averaged 6.9 yards per play. The Tigers forced three turnovers, including a momentum-shifting interception right before half. Burrow was 25 of 32 and again threw prolifically to Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase. Jefferson had eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Chase had five catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. Racey McMath and Derrick Dillon also caught TD passes. - LSU/AP College Football

  10/18/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

LSU hasn't been known for offensive fireworks this decade. But all of that has changed this season, particularly with the addition of passing game coordinator Joe Brady. The Tigers are averaging an FBS-leading 52.5 points. Burrow got particular satisfaction out of putting up more 511 yards and 42 points against a Florida defense that rated among the best in the SEC coming into Tiger Stadium last week. "The first five games were great, but everybody says we didn't play the best competition on defense," Burrow said, recalling the narrative he heard before facing the Gators. "We just played the best competition and played very, very well...We knew we could do this." - AP College Football

LSU tailback Clyde Edwards-Helaire ranks seventh in the SEC with 82.3 rushing yards per game and is tied for the SEC lead with seven touchdown runs. That kind of balance has made life difficult for opposing defenses trying to slow down LSU's offense. - AP College Football

  10/17/19 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels has surpassed expectations. He's averaging 301.3 yards of total offense per game, ranking first among freshmen nationally. He's also averaging 268.3 yards passing to rank among the top 20 quarterbacks overall nationwide. He's thrown eight touchdowns and just one interception. "We recruited him really hard out of high school," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He's a talented kid. He's not the biggest guy, only about 180 pounds, so he hasn't filled out yet, but he's doing a really nice job running the offense." - AP College Football

  10/16/19 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, who is on a record-breaking pace during the first half of the season, and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor highlight The Associated Press midseason All-America team released Tuesday. No. 2 LSU, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 12 Oregon each placed three players on the first team, tying for the most of any school on the team presented by Regions Bank. Burrow, whose 79.6% completion rate would be an NCAA record if he can keep it up, is joined on the first team by Tigers defensive backs Grant Delpit and freshman Derek Stingley.

Taylor, who leads the nation with 18 touchdowns, is joined by Badgers center Tyler Biadasz and linebacker Zack Baun. Oregon has two first-team offensive lineman in tackle Penei Sewell and guard Shane Lemieux, plus tight end Jacob Breeland, who was lost for the season to an injury in his last game. No. 4 Ohio State placed a total of five players on the first and second teams, most of any school. Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah were first-team selections. No. 1 Alabama had four overall selections, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the second team. Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard, the nation's leading rusher, joins Taylor in the first-team backfield. No. 5 Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb and Alabama's DeVonta Smith were the first-team selections at receiver. - AP College Football
