  05/14/20 - *Thaddeus MossrSo/2020, LSU, 6-2, 250 (DS#6 TE) + More +

LSU had a record-tying 14 players selected in the 2020 NFL draft, but there was at least one notable figure missing from that group. Tight end Thaddeus Moss, the son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss, was not taken and instead signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent. "Ultimately all I could ask for is the opportunity, but it was definitely a slap in the face," Moss said in a video news conference with reporters Wednesday. "I put a lot of work in, years of football. We (LSU) went undefeated and won a national championship. I played my best ball in our biggest games, so I definitely felt like it was a slap in the face not getting drafted, having kickers and punters and special teams guys get picked over me. I definitely felt some type of way over it. "But it's no difference. I've always had to prove myself my whole life. Having the last name that I've had, I've had to prove everybody else wrong, or prove myself right." In his lone year of action at LSU after transferring from North Carolina State and redshirting in 2018, Moss recorded 47 catches for 570 yards and four touchdowns. He notched nine catches for 135 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers' two College Football Playoff victories. - The News-Star

  05/11/20 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

A year ago at this time, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow wasn't listed by Las Vegas oddsmakers as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson was, along with Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez and Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello. But not the guy who would shatter Heisman Trophy voting records: Burrow. The LSU senior opened the season with a five-touchdown performance against Georgia Southern. And, voila, Vegas caught on. He was immediately listed as a 28:1 pick, still behind Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy and Patterson. The point is, we don't know who will win the 2020 Heisman Trophy. I hope it is one of the 100 players on today's list. But based on last season, I wouldn't be stunned if it was someone else. According to oddsmakers, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is the current favorite, followed by Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler. - News Gazette Tribune

LSU football fans will get a chance to go behind of the scenes of the Tigers' national championship season and Joe Burrow's Heisman run with the release of a new documentary. The SEC Network will broadcast an hour-long show starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday called "One for the Ages." It's produced by Jim Jorden Productions, the creative team behind SEC Inside, according to ESPN. The show will immediately be followed by a replay of LSU's win over Clemson in the national championship game. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins Jr. once competed for the starting quarterback job at Ohio State. They are set to duel as NFL quarterbacks this fall when the Cincinnati Bengals visit the Washington Redskins on Nov. 22. The Week 11 matchup was announced Thursday night as the league unveiled its 2020 regular-season schedule amid the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. The kickoff time for the game is 1 p.m. Cincinnati selected Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft last month, while Haskins will enter his second season in Washington after he was the franchise's first-round pick last year. Neither has secured the top spot on the depth chart, but will enter preseason training camp as their teams' presumptive starters. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  05/05/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU, 6-1, 212 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

Going into last season, the motivation for the LSU football team was that it was chock full of players and coaches who no one else wanted. The record-tying 14 Tigers selected in last month's NFL draft seemed to contradict that notion, but there is new motivation for 2020, senior safety JaCoby Stevens says: The Tigers don't want to be perceived as "one-hit wonders." "For spring ball, we were ready to get back and prove people wrong," Stevens said Monday night on LSU's in-house radio show "LSU Sixty." "As soon as we won they said we were one-year wonders. For those of us who were coming back, it was time to step up and take that to heart. "When it comes time for us to prove them wrong, we're going to do that."

LSU spring practice came to an abrupt halt in March after just three of the NCAA-mandated 15 sessions because of the coronavirus pandemic, with the spring game set for April 18 at Southern's A.W. Mumford Stadium also canceled. Now Stevens, who has been working out on his own, hopes the mantra will carry over to when the Tigers begin practicing for the 2020 season. He did not speculate on when that would be. "The smart thing to say would be history repeats itself," he said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  05/05/20 - Joe BurrowrSr/2020, LSU, 6-4, 221 (DS#1 QB) + More +

The impact of Joe Burrow's golden career at LSU may be transforming the reigning national champions into the next Quarterback U. LSU received a commitment from the No. 6-ranked pro style quarterback in the nation on Monday - Garrett Nussmeier (6-foot-2, 182 pounds) of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Also on Monday, the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the nation - Caleb Williams (6-1, 200) of Gonzaga High in Washington D.C. - narrowed his choices to LSU, Oklahoma, and Maryland over such schools as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. "I've been getting a good impression from the LSU coaches," Williams said to Rivals.com. Williams has been recruited by LSU offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Steve Ensminger, who also has recruited Nussmeier. Nussmeier, whose father Doug Nussmeier is the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys, committed to LSU over such schools as Texas, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU. - Daily Advertiser

The NCAA announced last week its name/image/likeness reform that basically will allow athletes to be compensated for endorsements. The initial theories say the rich will get richer in college football, that endorsements will flow in markets that are eat up with the sport. In Birmingham and Oklahoma City and Columbus, a commercial with a campus quarterback might sell a car or two. In Los Angeles and Chicago and New York, not so much. But a few days before the NCAA announcement came an event that sheds more light on the subject of parity. In the NFL Draft, 14 LSU players were selected. Ten each from Michigan and Ohio State went. Toss in the nine draftees from Alabama, and 16.9 percent of the 255 players drafted were from four schools.

In the 27 years since the NFL Draft was reduced to just seven rounds, only thrice have the 10 programs with the most picks in a particular draft accounted for more than 30 percent of the total selections: 30.6 percent in 2006, 31.2 percent in 2017 and 32.5 in 2020. The two most top-heavy drafts in NFL history have come in the last four years, which parallels the advent of the four-team College Football Playoff. The playoff has gained stature; the rest of the college football post-season, including major bowl games when they're not the national semifinals, have slipped. - Daily Oklahoman

Southeastern Conference leaders are hopeful for an on-time start to the 2020 football season, with all other FBS conferences on board. During an interview with Jacksonville, Fla., radio station 1010XL, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday he is "preparing to play football Labor Day weekend as scheduled," but added, "I don't know what will happen between now and then that's going to guide us." "The hope is (all conferences would) move along together, and to date that's been the conversation and collective thinking about how we might have to adjust," Sankey said.

There are 10 conferences and seven independent schools that make up the NCAA's largest football-playing division, the FBS. During an April 15 conference call with Vice President Mike Pence, the commissioners of those conferences, along with Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick, expressed a desire to begin the football season on the same weekend nationwide, according to The Associated Press. Last week, Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek said the SEC office and athletics directors have been in engaged in conversations about a variety of scenarios on the conference and national levels. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  04/29/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

With Burrow, wide receiver Justin Jefferson and starting tailback Clyde Edwards-Helaire all taken in the first round of last week's NFL draft among eight departed 2019 starters, the offensive task before LSU looks daunting. But that hasn't stopped Ensminger from throwing down a challenge to his offensive players. "I challenged out offense last year with the goal of being No. 1 in the country," he said. "I challenged this group to break every record we set last year. I don't know if we can achieve it, but we're going to go after it." What Ensminger doesn't want is for new starting quarterback Myles Brennan to try to be what Burrow was.

"I've told him, 'You don't have to be Joe Burrow. Just be the best Myles Brennan you can be and it will be good enough, I promise you," he said. Ensminger said he has seen a lot of growth in Brennan as Burrow's understudy. "I think it's his composure, competitiveness and his study of football," he said. "I know he can throw the ball. In the three (spring) practices we had he was patient in the pocket and had a great demeanor, checking to plays and sliding the center to put us in the right protection. I look forward to him keeping it going." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/29/20 - Liam ShanahanrSr/2022, LSU, 6-5, 305 (DS#14 C) + More +

LSU has signed Harvard graduate transfer and offensive lineman Liam Shanahan, a source confirmed with The Advocate. The news was first reported by The Athletic. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Massachusetts native will count toward LSU's 2020 class and add depth to a Tigers offensive line that lost four starters from its national championship team. Shanahan played both guard and tackle at Harvard. In three seasons, Shanahan had 16 starts at right guard, 11 starts at right tackle and two starts at left guard. He had nine starts at right guard in 2019, one at right tackle, and he started all 10 games at right tackle in 2018. He had seven starts at right guard in 2017, with two starts at left guard. Shanahan was an All-Ivy League first team selection in 2019, and he won the team's Joseph E. Wolf Award for top interior lineman. An All-Ivy League second-team selection in 2018, Shanahan played in all of Harvard's 10 games in the last three seasons. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/26/20 - *Clyde Edwards-HelaireJr/2020, LSU, 5-07, 207 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach texted his quarterback, Pat Mahomes, to gauge his thoughts on who the team should select with their first-round pick. "I said, 'Give me a name and don't think about it,'" Veach said. "He said, 'Clyde.' I said, 'Good.' " When the time came for the 32nd and final pick of Thursday's first round of the NFL draft, the reigning Super Bowl champions had their man, scooping up the LSU and Catholic High star ahead of such highly regarded running back prospects like D'Andre Swift of Georgia and Wisconsin's Jonathan Taylor. "Once I heard it was the Chiefs," Edwards-Helaire said, "my heart just dropped." Once he heard about what Mahomes said, his heart was full. "It just made me feel wanted," Edwards-Helaire said. "I immediately thought of the competition and how intense everything would be. But I'm more than happy. This is a franchise that just won the Super Bowl. It's time to go in and work immediately. I like working. "They drafted a great guy." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/26/20 - *Grant DelpitJr/2020, LSU, 6-2, 213 (DS#1 SS) + More +

Grant Delpit is tired of questions about his tackling. They've become inevitable. They've been lobbed at the LSU safety since he returned from a high ankle sprain in the middle of the 2019 season. It was no surprise that it was the fourth question Delpit fielded after the Cleveland Browns selected him with the No. 44 pick in the second round of the NFL draft. "I'm so tired of hearing that I can't tackle," Delpit said Friday night. "I might tackle you for asking that question." Delpit laughed. But the frustration is real. NFL executives, coaches and scouts all had similar questions.

They were most certainly the reason a former unanimous All-American, the 2019 Thorpe Award winner for nation's top defensive back, fell to the second round. Delpit was the third safety selected in the draft. He followed Alabama's Xavier McKinney to the New York Giants (No. 36) and Lenoir-Rhyne's Kyle Dugger to the New England Patriots (No. 37). "It was a humbling experience," Delpit said. "It was." In Cleveland, Delpit will be in familiar company. He's joining former LSU wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, plus former teammates cornerback Greedy Williams and linebacker Jacob Phillips, who the Browns selected No. 97 overall in the third round. Delpit said Cleveland is turning into the "LSU of the North," where he and Williams will make up "the best" secondary in the NFL. "Headline it," Delpit said. "All caps." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/26/20 - Kristian FultonSr/2020, LSU, 6-0, 197 (DS#3 CB) + More +

Kristian Fulton's NFL draft slide finally ended on Friday in a Titans hat. The LSU cornerback was a popular projection as a first-round pick but didn't hear his name called through 32 picks on Thursday. Fulton then waited through 29 picks of the second round before Tennessee sent in his name at No. 61 overall. Fulton was the seventh former LSU player selected in the virtual NFL draft, with teams and players connecting from remote locations due to social distancing requirements enacted to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. "It was the best moment I ever had," Fulton said of hearing his name alongside his family in New Orleans after the long wait. Fulton spoke about his grandfather, Louis, who died from coronavirus: "Feel like he was watching over me the whole time" - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/26/20 - Lloyd Cushenberry IIIJr/2020, LSU, 6-3, 312 (DS#1 C) + More +

Lloyd Cushenberry handed Joe Burrow the ball for every LSU record the star quarterback set in his Tigers career. On Friday Cushenberry was the one making a bit of history. The Denver Broncos selected Cushenberry in the third round of the NFL draft at No. 83 overall. With the pick he became the ninth Tigers player taken in the 2020 draft, tying the program record for any draft. They'd need just three more picks over the final four rounds of the draft to tie the SEC record of 12 set by Alabama in 2018. Cushenberry was the fourth LSU player picked on Friday. Safety Grant Delpit landed at No. 44 overall in the second round, cornerback Kristian Fulton went in the third round at No. 61 overall, followed shortly by former LSU guard Damien Lewis at No. 69 overall. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/26/20 - *Jacob PhillipsJr/2020, LSU, 6-3, 229 (DS#4 ILB) + More +

LSU's leading tackler is headed to join a few familiar SEC faces with the Cleveland Browns after Jacob Phillips' named was called at the tail-end of the third round. The Browns selected Phillips with the No. 97 overall pick, a compensatory selection awarded to the Browns. Phillips will join LSU teammate Grant Delpit with the Browns, who have spent all four of their picks on SEC players. Cleveland picked up Alabama OT Jedrick Wills in the first round and Missouri DT Jordan Elliott earlier in the third. He also joins former LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, and a pair of former LSU wide receivers in Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. Phillips was marked the fifth former LSU player picked on Friday, marking the second consecutive day the program had that many players drafted. The 10 total picks broke the program record that had been set at nine in the 2013 draft and matched the following year in 2014. - Baton Rouge Advocate
