  10/12/20 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

First-year wide receivers coach Prentice Gill said the spring practices were especially important for Daniels, the first ASU true freshman to start from the outset of his career. "In this system, you need elite quarterback play," Gill said. "That not just the play itself, that's organizing and moving the pieces around. The seven practices helped Jayden get used to that and when (No.) 5 is used to it even if our guys do get a little lost out there, Jayden can get things done. It was huge. If we didn't have it, it would be really hard to function right now." Daniels averaged 274.8 yards total offense over 12 games in 2019 when ASU finished 8-5. He threw for 2,943 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Now listed at 185 pounds, the 6-3 Daniels said going home to California during early quarantine helped him to put on some weight. "Then come back here and get bigger and strengthen in different areas. I'm still not where I want to be, but to be put on some more muscle mass I'm able to take some more hits and get back up." Daniels seems pleased with the working relationship he is building with Hill. "He asks me what do I like, what do I want to run, and we just have different ways of getting to it. He's going back to the film to see what best fits me. It's very exciting knowing I'm able to go to somebody and talk to him about this is what I want to do or I like this but I don't like this." - Arizona Republic

  10/11/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU, 6-1, 212 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

LSU is out of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 2017 and is the first defending national champion to drop from the rankings in nine years. No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia held steady at the top of the rankings Sunday, setting up a top-three matchup Saturday when the Crimson Tide hosts the Bulldogs. Clemson received 59 first-place votes. Alabama got two and Georgia one. Notre Dame moved up to No. 4 and North Carolina is No. 5. LSU dropped out from No. 17 after falling to 1-2 with a 45-41 loss at previously winless Missouri. The Tigers had been ranked in 43 straight polls, dating to Nov. 5, 2017. That was the seventh-longest active streak in the nation. - AP College Football

The comment from LSU coach Ed Orgeron understandably drew a fair amount of attention. A little more than a week before the start of the Southeastern Conference season, Orgeron was talking about his new defensive coordinator, former Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "We are so much better on defense right now than any part of the season last year," Orgeron said then. Three weeks into this season, results suggest otherwise. It has become abundantly clear LSU won't be defending its national championship and Orgeron's star-turn might be short-lived. The 17th-ranked Tigers fell to 1-2, upset for the second time this season by an SEC underling. First it was Mississippi State. On Saturday, it was Missouri, playing with a freshman quarterback and missing both its starting receivers, that tore up the Bayou Bengals. "We couldn’t stop anybody. Really poor showing on defense," Orgeron said. - AP College Football

The Arizona State Sun Devils have been picked second behind USC in a preseason poll of media members announced Wednesday morning. The Trojans, whom ASU will face in its season opener on Nov. 7, received 220 points and 32 first-place votes while ASU tallied 181 with two first-place votes. Defending South champion Utah was third with 168 but the Utes had four first-place votes. Rounding out the South are UCLA (109), Colorado (63) and Arizona (57). The Sun Devils, 8-5 last season with a win over Florida State in the Sun Bowl, were also picked second in three of the four national football publications. - Arizona Republic

  10/07/20 - Ed IngramSr/2022, LSU, 6-3, 312 (DS#7 OG) + More +

Starting left guard Ed Ingram is "questionable" for LSU's game against Missouri on Saturday, coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Monday, which means the Tigers could be without one of their best and most consistent offensive linemen. Orgeron also said he believes starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal could play against Missouri after missing a game due to an injury. Rosenthal didn't practice all of last week, and Orgeron said he may return this week. "Hopefully he can start practicing this week," Orgeron said. "I'm not sure that he can yet. I think he will be." The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Ingram limped off the field on the final drive of LSU's 41-7 win over Vanderbilt, and he was replaced by true freshman Marlon Martinez. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/05/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Brennan stepped into his throws Saturday night, completing 23 of 37 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns, a stat line that might have looked more impressive if not for several dropped passes. Brennan didn't play a perfect game. In the second quarter, he sailed a pass behind his intended target. Vanderbilt picked off the throw, setting up the Commodores' only touchdown. Brennan also missed a few throws, including one to Kirklin in the end zone early in the third quarter. LSU settled for a field goal on the drive. "Obviously, that interception was not a good decision," Orgeron said. "There was two or three times he could've made better decisions, but he threw some good balls."

Brennan responded on LSU's next possession after the interception. With LSU on its own 49-yard line, Brennan faked a handoff to running back John Emery. He dropped three steps as the play developed. Vanderbilt created pressure on Brennan's blind side. An outside linebacker sprinted around Emery, but as he reached Brenan's feet, the quarterback stepped into a throw, whipping a pass 22 yards downfield. The ball smacked into the hands of wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who ran past four defenders for a 51-yard score. "Myles delivered," Orgeron said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/05/20 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU, 6-6, 263 (DS#25 DE) + More +

Seven different defenders have collected LSU's eight sacks this season, a four-sack-per-game average that's tied eighth nationally. Defensive ends Andre Anthony, Travez Moore and nose tackle Siaki "Apu" Ika each picked up their first against Vanderbilt, and edge rushers Ali Gaye and BJ Ojulari harassed Seals for most of the night. Gaye provoked plenty of first-half pressure, often beating his blocker on the way to rushing Seals into throws. Ojulari's hit on Seals forced his fourth-quarter interception on the goal line. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/05/20 - *Terrace Marshall Jr.Jr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 205 (DS#7 WR) + More +

LSU is playing its 2020 season without a trio that rewrote its record books in their final college season, but the most notable holdovers look poised to challenge them. Through two games, Terrace Marshall has 10 catches for 189 yards from the arm of new starter Myles Brennan -- but more notable are the four touchdown passes he's logged in those opportunities. Marshall only caught two of his four targets in LSU's blowout of Vanderbilt, but both went for touchdowns. The first a strong grab inside two defenders for 16 yards early in the second quarter, then a 51-yard catch-and-run score 4 minutes before halftime. That long pass came shortly after Vanderbilt's lone score of the night. "That's a guy that him and I have been - along with the rest of the receivers - have been working really hard this offseason," Brennan said after the game. "And it's nice to go out there and trust those guys to make the plays as they are doing."

Despite a 1-1 start, LSU's passing attack has been rolling up yardage and touchdowns - with teammate Jontre Kirklin adding two touchdowns of his against Vanderbilt and Brennan tossing seven total through two weeks. But while Marshall and Brennan are one a pace that could challenge school and conference records, they'll be at a slight disadvantage due to the pandemic that has limited LSU's schedule to just a 10-game lineup, all against SEC opponents. With an appearance in the SEC and College Football Championship title game again this season, the most games this year's LSU team could possibly play is 13. The 2019 Tigers had 15 games to roll up their marks. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/05/20 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

The LSU defensive backs vindicated themselves a week after surrendering a Southeastern Conference-record 623 yards passing to Mississippi State's Air Raid. Although Vanderbilt was more committed to running the football, Seals was held to 11-of-25 passing for 113 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. LSU safety Todd Harris, who missed most of the 2019 season with a knee injury, recorded his first interception of the season on second-and-goal in the fourth quarter. True freshman cornerback Eli Ricks also intercepted Seals in the fourth quarter, leaping high for a pass in a pick that looked very similar to his first interception against Mississippi State. Senior safety JaCoby Stevens said he kept his teammates in the secondary from watching any football this week other than Vanderbilt film. No Monday Night Football. Nothing else. "I put us all on punishment," Stevens said. "We were on punishment for how we performed last Saturday. It worked out."

Some of the LSU secondary's success can be contributed to the return of All-American cornerback Derek Stingley, who missed the Mississippi State game after spending the night in a hospital because of an allergic reaction. Stingley had a crucial tackle on Vanderbilt's third drive, when he made a backside tackle on a Commodores misdirection run to the left side of the field. The tackle, which saved a long run, forced a long third down and eventually Vanderbilt's third straight punt to start the game. The versatile Stingley also dazzled with 92 return yards, including a 48-yard punt return in the third quarter in which he paused in the middle of the field, waited, then dashed down the right sideline to the Vanderbilt 20. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Sophomore safety Joe Foucha, who played off the bench for Arkansas, had two interceptions. His first interception came with 1:18 left in the first half. The Bulldogs had a first and 10 at the Arkansas 34 when Foucha intercepted Costello again with 14:20 left in the game. Foucha and Morgan also were credited with stopping Mississippi State running back Jo'Quavious Marks for a 2-yard loss on fourth and 2 from the Arkansas 7 with 4:39 left. "Joe had missed a few days of practice...and he just stayed with it, man," Pittman said of Foucha not starting. "He knew he was going to get in the game, and he came up big. "I'm so happy for him, so proud of him because it was bigger than him. It was about the team, and he tried to go get his job back. He just made it about the team." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/05/20 - Greg Brooks Jr.rSr/2024, LSU, 5-09, 187 (DS#999 FS) + More +

Thanks to Greg Brooks, the University of Arkansas scored on an interception return for the first time in four seasons. The defensive score came on Mississippi State's first possession of Saturday night's game at Davis-Wade Stadium. Brooks, a sophomore nickel back, intercepted a K.J. Costello pass on second and 7 and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown to give Arkansas a 7-0 lead with 11:44 left in the first quarter. The last time a Razorback had a pick-six was a 24-yard return by Santos Ramirez in Arkansas' 31-10 victory over No. 11 Florida in Fayetteville on Nov. 5, 2016. Ramirez's interception on a pass by Luke Del Rio also gave Arkansas a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/03/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Myles Brennan threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns and No. 20 LSU bounced back to beat Vanderbilt 41-7 on Saturday night. The defending national champs never trailed after losing their season opener last week to Mississippi State. LSU also extended its winning streak over the Commodores to nine in a series it leads 24-7-1. The Tigers outgained Vanderbilt 498-266, and the defense came up with two interceptions and a pair of sacks. Terrace Marshall Jr. finished with two TDs on two catches, and Jontre Kirklin had 65 yards receiving and two TD catches, the second a toe-tapper at the back of the end zone off a flea flicker. John Emery ran for 103 yards and a TD.

Vanderbilt (0-2) had its chances with freshman Ken Seals making his home debut. When Randall Haynie picked off an overthrown pass from Brennan, Seals hit tight end Ben Bresnahan with an 8-yard TD pass to pull the Commodores to 14-7 in the second quarter. They never scored again. Freshman Donovan Kaufman, a Louisiana native, returned a kickoff 58 yards, and the Commodores had first-and-goal at the 9. Seals' pass to Chris Pierce on third-and-goal at the 4 was a bit high, and Pierson Cooke pulled a 22-yard field goal wide left. Todd Harris Jr. picked off Seals' pass at the goal line early in the fourth quarter. - LSU/AP College Football

  10/02/20 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU, 6-6, 263 (DS#25 DE) + More +

Inside his apartment last Saturday night, Ali Gaye ate Polynesian food with his roommates and their families. Defensive lineman Soni Fonua's mom brought enough to feed about 40 people, so the players feasted after a season-opening loss to Mississippi State. Gaye, a junior defensive end, felt confident that night LSU would fix its mistakes. He had played well in his first start, using the natural length that pushed him up the depth chart in preseason practice. Gaye brushed off his success. "That's just one game," Gaye told his high school football coach, John Gradwohl, who attended the dinner. "There's lots of room for improvement."

Gaye deflected attention from himself, but he stood out in the midst of a disappointing loss. His final stat line - three tackles, one sack, a tackle for loss and three deflected passes - signaled a breakout performance. Emerging as a force on LSU's defense realized one of Gaye's dreams. He started playing football after his family moved from The Gambia, a small country on the Western coast of Africa, when he was 12. He attended two junior colleges because one of them dropped its football program, and he has lived in four states, moving to pursue his football career. If Gaye develops, coach Ed Orgeron believes he can become an early pick in the NFL draft because of his size. Gaye, who's 6-foot-6, can declare for the draft next spring. "Hopefully he stays for two years," Orgeron said, smiling. "Don't get too good." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/02/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Quarterback Myles Brennan set an LSU record for completions (27), attempts (46) and yards passing (345) by a first-time starter, but he finished with an uneven performance, struggling to spark LSU's offense. Brennan needed to make quicker decisions, coach Ed Orgeron said, and improve his pocket presence. Orgeron wants to see him move up in the pocket. Brennan's ability to do those things will make him a better quarterback and improve LSU's offense. - Baton Rouge Advocate
