  09/02/20 - Racey McMathSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 211 (DS#44 WR) + More +

Chase's departure is the most recent blow in a difficult preseason camp for the Tigers. Since practice began Aug. 17, two starters have opted out, needed to monitor Hurricanes Marco and Laura, and, on Wednesday, all but four LSU offensive linemen were quarantined after they either tested positive for COVID-19 or were determined to have high-risk exposure. Meanwhile, while many conferences have postponed fall sports, six Football Bowl Subdivision leagues are moving forward with football this fall, including the SEC, which will play a 10-game, league only schedule. LSU is scheduled to open the 10-game season Sept. 26 at home against Mississippi State.

Now, projected starting quarterback Myles Brennan has lost his most dangerous target. Terrace Marshall, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior, becomes the team's top returning receiver. Marshall caught 46 passes for 671 yards and 13 touchdowns in 12 games, missing three because of a foot injury. LSU's offense has regularly used at least three wide receivers at a time, since the Tigers switched to a spread attack last season. LSU coach Ed Orgeron has often spoke of senior Racey McMath as the group's third option, and it's likely that the 6-foot-3, 224-pound New Orleans native will step into a bigger role. McMath caught 17 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns last season, which includes a 60-yard reception. Orgeron has praised his speed and ability to make plays. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin will opt out of the 2020 college football season, a source confirmed with The Advocate on Monday afternoon. Shelvin was expected to start at defensive tackle in new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's 4-3 scheme, and the 6-foot-3, 346-pound junior is expected to be one of the top defensive linemen taken in the 2021 NFL draft. Shelvin is yet another key departure from LSU's roster, which, now only has five total returning starters from the lineup that won the College Football Playoff national championship in January. - The Advocate

WVUE-FOX 8's Garland Gillen confirmed the news first reported by CBS Sports HQ. Chase won the 2019 Biletnikoff Award, given to the top receiver in the nation, en route to a 2-touchdown performance in the Tigers' National Championship win over Clemson.   08/25/20 - Aaron MoffittrSr/2022, LSU, 6-2, 232 (DS#999 FB) + More +

LSU has been hit with its first major injury of preseason camp. Reserve tight end Aaron Moffitt, a redshirt junior, has suffered a torn ACL, a source told The Advocate. It is the second time Moffitt has sustained the injury. He tore an ACL in October of 2018 in the week leading up to the Georgia game, and he returned in a special teams role in 2019, when he recorded two tackles. The 6-foot-2, 237-pound Catholic High graduate is the son of LSU head strength coach Tommy Moffitt. He signed in 2017 as a three-star defensive end, and moved to tight end during his freshman season. Moffitt tweeted a message Monday afternoon that hinted at his injury. "God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers," Moffitt wrote. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/24/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

LSU is the first defending national champion to start the following season outisde the top five since Auburn in 2011 (post-Cam Newton, the Tigers were ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll). LSU lost a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, too, in Joe Burrow. Myles Brennan is the new QB for the Tigers, who had 14 players selected in the last draft, including five in the first round. There is plenty of talent coming back with All-America receiver Ja'Marr Chase, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., and nose tackle Tyler Shelvin. The Tigers will try to become the first back-to-back national champions since Alabama in 2011 and '12. - AP College Football

  08/20/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU, 6-1, 212 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

The Southeastern Conference has launched a league-wide council dedicated to racial equity and social justice, the league announced Thursday. The council is made up of players, administrators, coaches and SEC staff. The council will include more than 60 athletes who are in the SEC's existing student-athlete engagement program, plus administrative leaders from each campus and head coaches from each sport. Dr. Dereck Rovaris, LSU's Vice Provost for Diversity and the school's Chief Diversity Officer, and volleyball head coach Fran Flory will represent LSU on the council.

LSU safety JaCoby Stevens initiated a player-led movement in early June for every football player to register to vote. Stevens said LSU coach Ed Orgeron has been actively supporting, addressing it in team meetings, sending out text messages making sure the players registered. "Right now, we're just kind of waiting for the time to vote," Stevens said Wednesday. "With Coach O, he's kind of taken charge of it and he really backed us on it." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/20/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

LSU football had its second Heisman winner in school history last season in Joe Burrow, but another Tiger will be in contention to make it back-to-back years for the program. Burrow's presumed successor, Myles Brennan, currently has the third best betting odds to win college football's most prestige individual award, according to BetOnline.ag. Brennan's odds as of Thursday were 14/1, meaning a bet of $1 would net $14 in profit. Those odds falls behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence at 2/1 and Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler at 9/1. Miami's D'Eriq King and Texas' Sam Ehlinger both have 14/1 odds. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/18/20 - Andre AnthonyrSr/2022, LSU, 6-3, 245 (DS#31 DE) + More +

Defensive end Justin Thomas has left the LSU football team, coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday. Thomas, a junior, entered preseason camp as a possible starter in LSU's new 4-3 defense. Orgeron did not say why Thomas left the team. "Justin Thomas will not be with us," Orgeron said. "He left the team, and we wish him the best." Without Thomas, Orgeron said former outside linebackers Andre Anthony and Travez Moore are starting at defensive end. LSU has options at the position this season with junior college transfer Ali Gaye, freshman Phillip Webb, freshman BJ Ojulari and junior TK McLendon in the mix for playing time. "At defensive line, we have a lot of depth," Orgeron said. "We can rotate those guys." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/18/20 - *Cordale FlottJr/2022, LSU, 6-1, 178 (DS#47 CB) + More +

Coach Ed Orgeron made a point Tuesday to mention sophomore defensive back Cordale Flott. As an LSU assistant communications director opened Orgeron's virtual press conference to questions at the end of an opening statement, Orgeron interrupted. He had forgotten Flott's name while listing LSU's starting cornerbacks. "Excuse me," Orgeron said. "Excuse me. One guy I forgot to mention is starting at cornerback is Cordale Flott." With that, Orgeron began answering questions about preseason practice. But Orgeron made sure Flott didn't go overlooked. Flott has pushed for playing time throughout the offseason, and he will likely start at either cornerback or nickel this fall. "Cordale has had a tremendous camp and a tremendous summer," Orgeron said. Flott played in 14 games his freshman year. He started once, when nickel Kary Vincent Jr. played sparingly against Ole Miss because of an injury. Flott finished his first season with 15 tackles and four passes defended. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/18/20 - Austin DeculusrSr/2022, LSU, 6-5, 322 (DS#34 OT) + More +

LSU starting right tackle Austin Deculus did not practice when preseason camp began Monday, and coach Ed Orgeron said the third-year starter is going to be out for "a little bit." Orgeron told WNXX-FM, 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench" that true freshman Marcus Dumervil and redshirt freshman Charles Turner are practicing at the position in place of Deculus. Orgeron later told reporters in a news conference that sophomore Cameron Wire was also moved to right tackle to help with depth. "Those guys, they're doing good," Orgeron said Tuesday morning. "Young guys that are doing well, filling in. Again, Austin's going to be our starter. But those guys gotta be able to provide depth in the rotation. So this is good for us." Deculus is the only returning starter on the offensive line from LSU's national championship season. He started in 13 games, missing Ole Miss and Arkansas due to an injury, and he started in 11 games as a sophomore in 2018. The 6-foot-6, 311-pound Wire played in six games in 2019, and the East Ascension High graduate's experience exceeds the others backing up Deculus. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The Southeastern Conference has established September 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Thursday. The 2020 SEC football season will be comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game will be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of December 5. The schedule will include one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on December 12 for all schools.

"This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," Sankey said. "This new schedule supports the safety measures that are being taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities." This action was taken following extensive discussions and thorough deliberation among the SEC's Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, Conference Office staff, and medical advisors, led by the SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force. - SEC Football
