  09/23/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

With all that LSU has lost, plus the lost time in the offseason, the efficiency and chemistry of the passing attack with new quarterback Myles Brennan and his new wide receivers simply isn't there yet. "He's learning the offense," Orgeron said of Brennan. "I think the spring kind of hurt for him not being with us, or us not practicing with his receivers, but I think he did a good job of catching up during COVID and catching up in the summertime. He was very accurate with the football in all three scrimmages. The only thing that we don't know, and I do believe that he's going to do very well, is how he's going to do in the fire. The only way to know that is put him in the fire. "I think that takes time for him and his receivers to get the timing down and hopefully he can improve in that throughout the year." No Joe Burrow, no Ja'Marr Chase, no Justin Jefferson, even no Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the running back who often got split out wide to the boundary in LSU's five-receiver sets. That obviously changes things immensely. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/23/20 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU, 6-6, 263 (DS#25 DE) + More +

Two positions stood out in LSU's first official depth chart. The Tigers provided some clarity on the open cornerback spots, and they listed junior college transfer Ali Gaye as a starter at left defensive end. Senior Travez Moore entered preseason practice as a starter at defensive end, but Gaye overtook him. He'll start opposite senior Andre Anthony against Mississippi State. "He's earned that starting position," coach Ed Orgeron said. "I think he's going to have a great season for us." Most of the depth chart resembled what Orgeron said throughout preseason practice, but the coach called Moore a starter the last time he discussed defensive ends.

Gaye, a 6-foot-6 and 262-pound junior, transferred from Garden City Community College. In his only season there, Gaye registered 44 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble as he became the No. 2 rated junior college defensive end in the country. "Thank God we got Ali from junior college," Orgeron recently said. Orgeron likes Gaye's range and physicality. Early in LSU's final scrimmage last Friday, Gaye batted a pass into the air, creating an interception. He'll split time with Moore - Orgeron said they'll have equal reps - but Gaye will start the game. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/23/20 - Neil Farrell Jr.rSr/2022, LSU, 6-4, 339 (DS#17 DT) + More +

Neil Farrell will have to practice exceptionally this week to break into the defensive tackle rotation for LSU's season-opener against Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium. Orgeron said the senior, listed at 6-foot-4, 319-pounds, "still has some conditioning to do" since Farrell returned to the team last week after initially opting out due to coronavirus concerns. Before Farrell opted out, he was expected to challenge for a starting spot. He led the defensive line with 46 tackles in 2019, adding seven tackles for loss and three sacks. "Obviously, we all know Neil can play," Orgeron said. "How fast he returns and how fast he works his way up the depth chart is basically up to him. He's coming back with a great attitude. Wants to work. If Neil is in shape, and he's working, Neil can possibly be a starter for us. He's that good. But I can see him starting to get some game reps. I don't know if he's gonna be ready." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/16/20 - *Tyler ShelvinrJr/2021, LSU, 6-2, 350 (DS#8 DT) + More +

One LSU defensive lineman has already decided to opt back in for the 2020 season and it's possible he may not be the only one to do so. Tigers coach Ed Orgeron acknowledged Tuesday that he's heard "rumblings" that star defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, who opted out of the season in late August, is considering returning to the team and playing this year. "His family has called me and I know people are talking to him," Orgeron said. "I have not spoken to Tyler. I think some of his teammates are talking to him. But there's not been a decision yet...We'd take him back obviously and we want him back." Getting him back would be significant. Shelvin was the top defensive lineman on LSU's 2019 national championship team and had been viewed as one of the top defensive linemen in the SEC entering this season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/16/20 - *JaMarr ChaseJr/2021, LSU, 6-0, 201 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Former LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase officially declared Tuesday for the 2021 NFL draft. Chase announced the decision on his Twitter account. Chase opted out of the 2020 college football season two weeks ago. Though expected to prepare for the draft, he didn't specify his future plans, only saying he looked forward to returning to the field next year. Chase, a junior, had one season left of eligibility. After a record-setting year in which he won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver in 2019, mock drafts have projected him as an early first-round pick. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/15/20 - Neil Farrell Jr.rSr/2022, LSU, 6-4, 339 (DS#17 DT) + More +

LSU defensive lineman Neil Farrell, the first Tiger to choose to sit out the season because of the coronavirus pandemic, is back at the LSU facilities and plans on opting back into the season, coach Ed Orgeron told The Advocate. The news was first reported by The Athletic. Defensive coordinator Bo Pelini's four-man front is still missing its biggest piece, defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, who opted out at the end of August. Orgeron said Shelvin is considering returning to the team, but it's uncertain whether the 6-foot-3, 346-pound junior will follow Farrell in his return back to the team. Farrell first announced his decision to leave the program on Twitter in early August. He said the virus had hit his family hard and that his grandmother was battling COVID-19 in the hospital. Farrell provided an update on Twitter on Thursday that said, "My grandmother is getting better each and every day & I thank God for that...I miss football." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/12/20 - Ray ParkerrSo/2024, LSU, 6-4, 245 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Before LSU announced the suspension of football player Ray Parker Wednesday morning, the redshirt freshman defensive end was arrested in Baton Rouge on battery of a dating partner and simple criminal damage to property. Parker, 20, was arrested by LSU police and booked in jail around 8 a.m, according to an LSU Police Department arrest document. LSU coach Ed Orgeron announced Wednesday morning through a team spokesman that Parker was indefinitely suspended for violation of team rules. According to the probable cause affidavit, an LSU police officer was dispatched to an on-campus apartment at approximately 2:34 a.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, the document said, the victim stated she and Parker were involved in a dating relationship which lasted roughly a year. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/09/20 - *Kayshon BoutteJr/2023, LSU, 5-11, 195 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Orgeron told reporters Tuesday morning that true freshman Kayshon Boutte is all but officially the team's third receiver. "I think that's locked in," Orgeron said. LSU football takes 'full-speed' approach to preseason tackling in coronavirus era, Ed Orgeron says It was the last true position battle on offense. Myles Brennan has long been the projected quarterback; Orgeron is once again committed to a running-back-by-committee until someone emerges; the offensive line rotation has not wavered since Harvard grad transfer Liam Shanahan moved to center in the summer; and no one was expected to challenge five-star tight end Arik Gilbert, last year's high school Gatorade National Player of the Year. The depth chart seemed stable at the start of August.

Then, star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase announced he was opting out of the 2020 season last week, and, suddenly, Boutte and a group of about five other receivers were pushing for a starting spot. In LSU's first practice without Chase, Orgeron said Boutte had his best performance. The day after, Orgeron mentioned unprovoked in his opening remarks that Boutte "had a great day." Speed, versatility and a history of explosive plays appear to have given Boutte the edge. He was a five-star prospect out of Westgate High, a 6-foot, 185-pound track sprinter who was the nation's No. 2 wide receiver of the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/09/20 - Darren EvansSr/2022, LSU, 6-2, 179 (DS#58 CB) + More +

Former Nicholls State defensive back Darren Evans announced Tuesday evening that he has transferred to LSU. Starting nickel safety Kary Vincent announced in August he was opting out of the upcoming season, and, last week, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said he was looking to use the team's final scholarship spot of the 2020 recruiting cycle to boost depth in the defensive backfield. "We're looking for players right now, obviously," Orgeron said. "We have some needs...We're looking for a cornerback, and I think we're going to use it on a cornerback. It should be happening soon." Evans, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound Baton Rouge native, started in all 14 games at cornerback for Nicholls State in 2019, and he was named second team All-Southland Conference in 2018. Evans started at corner in 32 total games at Nicholls, and he recorded 100 tackles, four interceptions and 27 pass breakups in his three-year career in Thibodaux. "They say Home is where the heart is," Evans posted Tuesday afternoon on Twitter. - Baton Rouge Advocate
