  10/05/20 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

The LSU defensive backs vindicated themselves a week after surrendering a Southeastern Conference-record 623 yards passing to Mississippi State's Air Raid. Although Vanderbilt was more committed to running the football, Seals was held to 11-of-25 passing for 113 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. LSU safety Todd Harris, who missed most of the 2019 season with a knee injury, recorded his first interception of the season on second-and-goal in the fourth quarter. True freshman cornerback Eli Ricks also intercepted Seals in the fourth quarter, leaping high for a pass in a pick that looked very similar to his first interception against Mississippi State. Senior safety JaCoby Stevens said he kept his teammates in the secondary from watching any football this week other than Vanderbilt film. No Monday Night Football. Nothing else. "I put us all on punishment," Stevens said. "We were on punishment for how we performed last Saturday. It worked out."

Some of the LSU secondary's success can be contributed to the return of All-American cornerback Derek Stingley, who missed the Mississippi State game after spending the night in a hospital because of an allergic reaction. Stingley had a crucial tackle on Vanderbilt's third drive, when he made a backside tackle on a Commodores misdirection run to the left side of the field. The tackle, which saved a long run, forced a long third down and eventually Vanderbilt's third straight punt to start the game. The versatile Stingley also dazzled with 92 return yards, including a 48-yard punt return in the third quarter in which he paused in the middle of the field, waited, then dashed down the right sideline to the Vanderbilt 20. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/05/20 - Joe FoucharSr/2023, LSU, 5-10, 198 (DS#37 SS) + More +

Sophomore safety Joe Foucha, who played off the bench for Arkansas, had two interceptions. His first interception came with 1:18 left in the first half. The Bulldogs had a first and 10 at the Arkansas 34 when Foucha intercepted Costello again with 14:20 left in the game. Foucha and Morgan also were credited with stopping Mississippi State running back Jo'Quavious Marks for a 2-yard loss on fourth and 2 from the Arkansas 7 with 4:39 left. "Joe had missed a few days of practice...and he just stayed with it, man," Pittman said of Foucha not starting. "He knew he was going to get in the game, and he came up big. "I'm so happy for him, so proud of him because it was bigger than him. It was about the team, and he tried to go get his job back. He just made it about the team." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/05/20 - Greg Brooks Jr.rSr/2024, LSU, 5-09, 187 (DS#999 FS) + More +

Thanks to Greg Brooks, the University of Arkansas scored on an interception return for the first time in four seasons. The defensive score came on Mississippi State's first possession of Saturday night's game at Davis-Wade Stadium. Brooks, a sophomore nickel back, intercepted a K.J. Costello pass on second and 7 and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown to give Arkansas a 7-0 lead with 11:44 left in the first quarter. The last time a Razorback had a pick-six was a 24-yard return by Santos Ramirez in Arkansas' 31-10 victory over No. 11 Florida in Fayetteville on Nov. 5, 2016. Ramirez's interception on a pass by Luke Del Rio also gave Arkansas a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  10/03/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Myles Brennan threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns and No. 20 LSU bounced back to beat Vanderbilt 41-7 on Saturday night. The defending national champs never trailed after losing their season opener last week to Mississippi State. LSU also extended its winning streak over the Commodores to nine in a series it leads 24-7-1. The Tigers outgained Vanderbilt 498-266, and the defense came up with two interceptions and a pair of sacks. Terrace Marshall Jr. finished with two TDs on two catches, and Jontre Kirklin had 65 yards receiving and two TD catches, the second a toe-tapper at the back of the end zone off a flea flicker. John Emery ran for 103 yards and a TD.

Vanderbilt (0-2) had its chances with freshman Ken Seals making his home debut. When Randall Haynie picked off an overthrown pass from Brennan, Seals hit tight end Ben Bresnahan with an 8-yard TD pass to pull the Commodores to 14-7 in the second quarter. They never scored again. Freshman Donovan Kaufman, a Louisiana native, returned a kickoff 58 yards, and the Commodores had first-and-goal at the 9. Seals' pass to Chris Pierce on third-and-goal at the 4 was a bit high, and Pierson Cooke pulled a 22-yard field goal wide left. Todd Harris Jr. picked off Seals' pass at the goal line early in the fourth quarter. - LSU/AP College Football

  10/02/20 - Ali GayerSr/2023, LSU, 6-6, 263 (DS#25 DE) + More +

Inside his apartment last Saturday night, Ali Gaye ate Polynesian food with his roommates and their families. Defensive lineman Soni Fonua's mom brought enough to feed about 40 people, so the players feasted after a season-opening loss to Mississippi State. Gaye, a junior defensive end, felt confident that night LSU would fix its mistakes. He had played well in his first start, using the natural length that pushed him up the depth chart in preseason practice. Gaye brushed off his success. "That's just one game," Gaye told his high school football coach, John Gradwohl, who attended the dinner. "There's lots of room for improvement."

Gaye deflected attention from himself, but he stood out in the midst of a disappointing loss. His final stat line - three tackles, one sack, a tackle for loss and three deflected passes - signaled a breakout performance. Emerging as a force on LSU's defense realized one of Gaye's dreams. He started playing football after his family moved from The Gambia, a small country on the Western coast of Africa, when he was 12. He attended two junior colleges because one of them dropped its football program, and he has lived in four states, moving to pursue his football career. If Gaye develops, coach Ed Orgeron believes he can become an early pick in the NFL draft because of his size. Gaye, who's 6-foot-6, can declare for the draft next spring. "Hopefully he stays for two years," Orgeron said, smiling. "Don't get too good." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/02/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Quarterback Myles Brennan set an LSU record for completions (27), attempts (46) and yards passing (345) by a first-time starter, but he finished with an uneven performance, struggling to spark LSU's offense. Brennan needed to make quicker decisions, coach Ed Orgeron said, and improve his pocket presence. Orgeron wants to see him move up in the pocket. Brennan's ability to do those things will make him a better quarterback and improve LSU's offense. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/01/20 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

LSU's All-American cornerback Derek Stingley missed Saturday's game against Mississippi State after spending Friday night in a hospital due to an illness. His father, Derek Stingley Sr., shared moments, in an interview Tuesday morning with WNXX-FM 104.5's "Off the Bench," from what he called a "scary" night, when the star defensive back had "a reaction" that led to his hospitalization. LSU's defense struggled in Stingley's absence, surrendering a Southeastern Conference single-game record 623 yards passing. On the CBS broadcast, announcer Brad Nessler said LSU officials told them they believed it was an allergic reaction.

Stingley Sr. said his son was released before the game and it was never a possibility that he could play. "It was a rough night," Stingley Sr. said. "But bottom line, Derek had a reaction to something that caused him to have to go to the hospital. When we got there, they were just running some tests on him, making sure they were ruling out everything. So we knew that he was fine. He was actually ready to go right before the game started. They started doing discharge papers to get him out of the hospital." "So it was scary," he continued, "but it wasn't as bad as we thought it was when we first got the call and all that. But he's good to go. I'm pretty sure they're going to probably take it easy with him this week. But I'm pretty sure he may wind up playing as well. It's one of those moments where, me, personally, I would hate to relive or go through it again. But he's good. He's healthy. He's ready to go." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/01/20 - Zach Von RosenbergSr/2021, LSU, 6-4, 235 (DS#7 P) + More +

LSU punter Zach Von Rosenberg was named the Ray Guy Award punter of the week, the Augusta Sports Council announced Tuesday morning. The 30-year-old Zachary High graduate's seven punts in LSU's 44-34 loss to Mississippi State averaged a distance of 49.43 yards, and five punts landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Von Rosenberg's longest punt traveled 58 yards, but his 53-yard punt in the second quarter pinned Mississippi State at its own 9. The field position allowed LSU to play aggressive on defense, and, three plays later, linebacker Jabril Cox returned an interception 14 yards for a defensive touchdown. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/01/20 - Jay WardrSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 188 (DS#10 FS) + More +

Sophomore cornerback Jay Ward, one of the young defensive backs who struggled in LSU's 44-34 loss to Mississippi State, played Saturday after missing two weeks in preseason camp following knee surgery on a torn meniscus. LSU coach Ed Orgeron had said before that Ward missed practice, and, in an interview Tuesday morning with WNXX-FM 104.5's "Off the Bench," he revealed the details of Ward's injury. "Jay Ward had a meniscus tear and had a slight operation on his knee and was just coming back," Orgeron said in the interview. "And hadn't practiced at all. There were some things there that we were hampered by."

It isn't often that Orgeron reveals the details of an LSU player's injury, but the update offers more explanation why Ward missed practice and was in a precarious position when he helped fill in for All-American cornerback Derek Stingley. Stingley missed the game after spending Friday night in a hospital with an acute illness, and Orgeron told WNXX that he still expects Stingley to return to the team Tuesday or Wednesday after medical clearance. "We didn't even know (Ward) could play," Orgeron told reporters Monday. "He played a lot of snaps. I thought he did a fairly good job, but obviously was a little rusty there." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/30/20 - Glen LoganrSr/2022, LSU, 6-3, 298 (DS#38 DT) + More +

Starting defensive tackle Glen Logan will not be playing in the team's next game against Vanderbilt, Orgeron said. The senior did not dress out for the Mississippi State game on Saturday. Orgeron did not offer specifics for why Logan will not be playing, but he said Logan will be back for LSU's Week 3 home game against Missouri. "Glen Logan will not be available this week and he will be available for Missouri," Orgeron said. The 6-foot-3, 339-pound Destrehan High graduated moved inside from defensive end, where he recorded 20 tackles, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks in 2019. The Tigers' four-man defensive front was already entering the season without its other projected starting defensive tackle, Tyler Shelvin, who opted out of the season to prepare for the NFL draft. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/28/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU, 6-1, 212 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

LSU allowed a Southeastern Conference-record 623 yards passing against Mississippi State on Saturday in Tiger Stadium, and while preventing such production requires the entire defense, the Tigers' secondary struggled in a season-opening 44-34 loss. Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello torched LSU's defensive backfield. Playing his first SEC game since transferring from Stanford, Costello thrived in the Bulldogs' new Air Raid offense by attacking No. 6 LSU's young defensive backs. Costello threw five touchdown passes. "Embarrassing," senior safety JaCoby Stevens said. "It's like going into a boxing ring and getting knocked out."

LSU had to play without sophomore All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who was hospitalized overnight Friday after becoming "acutely ill," LSU said in a statement released Saturday morning. Stingley, whose condition wasn't related to the coronavirus, was suddenly unavailable. The absence of one of the best cornerbacks in college football forced LSU to rely on inexperienced players, and they faltered in man coverage. Coach Ed Orgeron said LSU had "too many missed assignments," allowing Mississippi State players to run wide open. "We have no excuses," Orgeron said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/28/20 - Darren EvansSr/2022, LSU, 6-2, 179 (DS#58 CB) + More +

Without Stingley, the Tigers' starting cornerbacks - sophomore Cordale Flott, graduate transfer Darren Evans and freshman Eli Ricks - had one combined career start at LSU. Evans, the player with the most experience, transferred from Nicholls State earlier this month. "When you're missing one of the best corners in the nation," Stevens said, "it's going to hurt." Mississippi State beat LSU with crossing routes and deep passes down the sidelines. Coach Mike Leach expected LSU to play loose coverage. When LSU instead crowded near the line of scrimmage, Leach said Mississippi State decided "we ought to go over the top." Costello picked apart the secondary. On a touchdown drive in the second quarter, he completed a 34-yard pass behind Flott. Three plays later, Costello threw a 31-yard touchdown over Evans' head. Sophomore Jay Ward later replaced Evans, even though Ward missed two weeks of practice before the game. Ward broke up three passes, but the substitution didn't change much. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  09/28/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU, 6-1, 212 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

The new scheme in Bo Pelini's return to the program as defensive coordinator flopped in its debut. Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello set a single-game SEC record with the yardage total, and his five touchdown passes often exploited young and inexperienced LSU defensive backs that couldn't keep up in man coverage. "We couldn't stay with their guys," Orgeron said. Yes, LSU played without its All-American cornerback, Derek Stingley, who spent Friday night in a hospital with a non-coronavirus related illness. Yes, Stingley was initially replaced by Nicholls State graduate transfer Darren Evans, who joined the program less than a month ago. Yes, sophomore Jay Ward didn't practice in camp for two weeks after a "minor operation," Orgeron said, and "was a little behind." But Stevens said the excuses wear out as the points and the yardage starts to pile on. The conversation on the sideline started with "keep your head up, go to the next play," Stevens said. "But as the game goes on, you've got to tell those guys, 'Hey, it's time to step up. You're not a young guy anymore. You've got to represent Louisiana. You're playing for LSU." "We had too many missed assignments," Orgeron said, "and we've got to look at why we're having the missed assignments, what's causing them. Too many guys are running free. Too many guys are getting beat one-on-one. We've just got to go back to looking at if we can cover man-to-man. If we can't, we've got to make a decision to play some zone." - Baton Rouge Advocate
