A targeting penalty in the fourth quarter helped LSU continue its go-ahead drive, scoring with 3:59 left to dispatch Arkansas, 27-24, on Saturday. TJ Finley found Jaray Jenkins for a 13-yard touchdown to put LSU (3-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) ahead by three points. It was the capper to a 10-play, 67-yard drive on which Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon was flagged for a 15-yard targeting penalty and ejected.

LSU sealed the game when Jay Ward got his hands on an AJ Reed 44-yard field goal attempt with 1:24 left, the ball falling well short of the crossbar. Finley threw for 271 yards and two scores, the other in the second quarter on a 30-yard pass to Racey McMath. Arkansas (3-5, 3-5) had taken its first lead late in the third quarter when Feleipe Franks led a 5-play, 95-yard drive. Reed's 22-yard field goal early in the fourth put Arkansas ahead 24-20 ahead of Jenkins' final touchdown. Franks finished 17 of 26 for 339 yards with an interception and a touchdown. He ran for 43 yards and a touchdown, as well. Four of Franks' completions went for more than 50 yards. - LSU/AP College Football

LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall had an uncharacteristically quiet afternoon in what turned into a 48-11 rout against Auburn. Marshall, who entered the game with 21 catches for 512 yards and 9 TDs, finished with just four receptions for 28 yards and a long of 13. The result means Marshall's school-record tying streak consecutive games with a touchdown catch ends at seven, which leaves him tied with two others for the LSU record. With two scores in last week's 52-24 blowout of South Carolina, Marshall tied the mark set by Dwayne Bowe (2005) and matched by Jarvis Landry (2012-13). Marshall entered the game against Auburn leading the Southeastern Conference with 128.0 yards receiving per game. His nine receiving touchdowns topped the league stats and was second in the FBS ranks. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  11/03/20 - Liam ShanahanrSr/2022, LSU + More +

Do not blame LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini for this one. Yes, the defense allowed more than 500 yards for the third time this season as the Tigers lost 48-11 to unranked Auburn Saturday afternoon, but Pelini's unit blanked Auburn in the first quarter and kept LSU in the game into the second quarter. And, hey, that's improvement for that defense. It was LSU's offense, particularly its offensive line, that stunk like old smashed pumpkins in the sun. The Tigers mustered just 32 rushing yards on 27 carries. Tailback John Emery Jr. was LSU's leading rusher with 21 yards on nine carries. Tailback Tyrion Davis-Price, who rushed for 135 yards last week in a 52-24 win over South Carolina, gained zero on three carries. LSU's offensive line allowed four sacks and five hurries. "We got punched in the face," center Liam Shanahan said. "Absolutely killed. It stings. We got embarrassed on a national stage. We just never really got anything going through the entire game." - Daily Advertiser

  11/02/20 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Can Jayden Daniels factor into the running game more than he did last year? That should be a resounding "yes". Last year Daniel tallied 355 yards on 125 tries. His most notable scrambles were the 17-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds that gave ASU a 38-34 win over Washington State and the other a 7-yard run in the closing seconds at Michigan State that set up a game-winning 1-yard touchdown by Benjamin. But ASU ran a conservative offense because of the youth up front and didn't want Daniels taking unnecessary risks. But Daniels has progressed, the line should be better and new coordinator Zak Hill's offense is more tailored to Daniels' strengths and one of those is getting out and improvising when a play breaks down. That is a dynamic the defense is going to have to account for. - Arizona Republic

  10/27/20 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU + More +

If Myles Brennan is healthy Saturday, he has LSU's starting quarterback spot locked down - but if there's any measure of doubt, he's staying on the sidelines while his team plays Auburn. "If Myles is healthy, he's our first team quarterback," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. "But I'm not putting him in if he's not 100 percent." Brennan tore his abdomen muscle when Missouri safety Tyree Gillespie collided hard with his shoulder in the first quarter of the LSU-Missouri game on Oct. 10. He played through the pain that day but did not return to practice once it was over. Even before the game against Florida was postponed, Brennan was not set to start. When LSU faced South Carolina on Oct. 24, freshman TJ Finley took the field instead of Brennan. Finley completed 17 of 21 pass attempts for 265 yards and also rushed for 24 yards. "I was so proud, so pleased with TJ's poise," Orgeron said. "He looked like a veteran out there." Despite his good game, if Brennan is ready, Finley will move to backup quarterback. This week will be all about evaluating Brennan while prepping Finley and freshman quarterback Max Johnson for the possibility Brennan isn't ready. - Montgomery Advertiser

  10/27/20 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU + More +

Penn State running back Noah Cain will miss the rest of the season with an injury, another blow to the the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions' backfield as they prepare to face No. 3 Ohio State. Penn State coach James Franklin declined to give specifics of Cain's injury, but the sophomore left Saturday's overtime loss to Indiana early and reportedly was seen on the sideline later with a walking boot on his left leg. The loss of Cain, who ran for 443 yards and eight touchdowns last year, comes about a week after Penn State announced its leading rusher from last season, Journey Brown, could miss this entire season with an unspecified medical condition. With Brown out, Cain was expected to take on a larger role. He had one carry for 3 yards in the season opener against Indiana. Sophomore Devyn Ford ended up being Penn State's lead back against the Hoosiers, carrying 20 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Ford scored the touchdown Indiana conceded when it was trying to get the ball back in the final two minutes of regulation. - AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Noah CainrSr/2024, LSU + More +

In 10 games last season, Cain rushed for 443 yards on 84 attempts with eight touchdowns. He also had seven receptions for 52 yards. Ford appeared in 12 games and had 294 rushing yards on 52 attempts with three touchdowns. He also contributed five receptions for 30 yards. "Obviously, I think (running back coach Ja'Juan Seider) has done a really good job of not only recruiting but also developing at that position," Franklin said. "There's an identity and a mentality at that position...We've got a number of guys there whether you're talking about Devyn or whether you talking about, obviously, Noah Cain (who) did so many significant things for us last year." Further down the depth chart are Caziah Holmes and Keyvone Lee. "Then two guys that we're really excited about behind those guys with Caziah and Keyvone. I feel like we've got a really good group there," Franklin said. "Obviously, Keyvone and Caziah haven't done it in a collegiate setting yet. Replacing Brown won't be easy, and it appears it will take a committee to do so. "But we do feel like Noah has the ability to carry the load and feel like Devyn has a chance to do that as well," Franklin said. "We'll see how close those two young guys are ready to play based on how they prepared this week. But you'd love to get them in the game and see how they'll do in that setting. We feel very confident with Noah and feel very confident with Devyn." - Tribune Review

  10/16/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU + More +

Orgeron said he's pleased with the team's pass rush - tied 18th nationally with an average of three sacks per game - but changes may be made to stop the run. "I think it's all about playing bigger guys up front and playing better technique," Orgeron said. The coaching staff is also still trying to find the best way to use starting safety JaCoby Stevens. Orgeron didn't mention any specific moves, but he said he had Monday meetings with both Stevens and his coaching staff. "They know that we need to put him in better positions for him to make plays and use the talents that he has," Orgeron said. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior has been a hybrid playmaker for LSU. Sometimes Stevens plays deep, but he's mostly used as a rusher near the line of scrimmage. Orgeron has said Stevens plays best closer to the ball, and, so far, Stevens is LSU's second-leading tackler (22) and leads the team in sacks (2). - Baton Rouge Advocate

Sophomore cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. sprained his ankle in a "freak accident" against Missouri and played the rest of the game, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Monday. Stingley tripped over the down marker after making a tackle in the second quarter. Asked if Stingley played at 100% the entire game, Orgeron said "no." "He sprained his ankle on the down marker coming off the field," Orgeron said. "He was playing - I don't know what part of the game that happened - but after that, he was playing on a sprained ankle." Athletic trainers tended to Stingley on the field. Stingley returned two plays later, but he clearly looked hobbled the rest of the game. Stingley finished with five tackles. "He didn't look the same," Orgeron said. "Some people would've been out the game, but he wanted to play. Just a freak accident on the down marker." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Terrace Marshall's 235 yards were the most by an LSU receiver in nearly two decades, but it was the one yard he couldn't get that sealed the result against Missouri. LSU rode an 11-catch, three-touchdown performance by Marshall all the way into prime position after his final catch left the Tigers with first-and-goal at the 1-yard line, trailing 45-41 with 44 seconds to play. But after two unsuccessful attempts to run it in, Missouri swatted down a quick throw targeting Marshall to the left. Marshall was again the target on fourth down, but the junior receiver was unable to haul in the contested throw as quarterback Myles Brennan rolled to his right. Marshall was running an out route on that final play, and the defender was in outside technique. "I was confident my team was gonna punch it in," Marshall said after the game. "But unfortunately we weren't able to get the job done today." But more often than not, Marshall was the one forcing the mistakes, with his three touchdown catches all coming in big spots. All three of those statistical marks (11 catches, 235 yards and three touchdowns) put Marshall in elite company in LSU history. The receiving yardage is the fourth-highest total in program history, besting all four of the 200-yard performances put up by teammates Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson in the 2019 season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  10/12/20 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU + More +

First-year wide receivers coach Prentice Gill said the spring practices were especially important for Daniels, the first ASU true freshman to start from the outset of his career. "In this system, you need elite quarterback play," Gill said. "That not just the play itself, that's organizing and moving the pieces around. The seven practices helped Jayden get used to that and when (No.) 5 is used to it even if our guys do get a little lost out there, Jayden can get things done. It was huge. If we didn't have it, it would be really hard to function right now." Daniels averaged 274.8 yards total offense over 12 games in 2019 when ASU finished 8-5. He threw for 2,943 yards with 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Now listed at 185 pounds, the 6-3 Daniels said going home to California during early quarantine helped him to put on some weight. "Then come back here and get bigger and strengthen in different areas. I'm still not where I want to be, but to be put on some more muscle mass I'm able to take some more hits and get back up." Daniels seems pleased with the working relationship he is building with Hill. "He asks me what do I like, what do I want to run, and we just have different ways of getting to it. He's going back to the film to see what best fits me. It's very exciting knowing I'm able to go to somebody and talk to him about this is what I want to do or I like this but I don't like this." - Arizona Republic

  10/11/20 - JaCoby StevensSr/2021, LSU + More +

LSU is out of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 2017 and is the first defending national champion to drop from the rankings in nine years. No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia held steady at the top of the rankings Sunday, setting up a top-three matchup Saturday when the Crimson Tide hosts the Bulldogs. Clemson received 59 first-place votes. Alabama got two and Georgia one. Notre Dame moved up to No. 4 and North Carolina is No. 5. LSU dropped out from No. 17 after falling to 1-2 with a 45-41 loss at previously winless Missouri. The Tigers had been ranked in 43 straight polls, dating to Nov. 5, 2017. That was the seventh-longest active streak in the nation. - AP College Football
