  12/01/20 - Jabril CoxrSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 232 (DS#6 OLB) + More +

LSU linebacker Jabril Cox has been named among 16 semifinalists for the Dick Butkus Award for nation's best linebacker, the Butkus Foundation announced Monday. Former All-American Devin White was the first LSU player to win the Butkus Award in 2018, and he eventually was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Cox is LSU's fourth-leading tackler with 36 total tackles, and he is tied for second on the team with 4½ tackles for loss while adding one sack.

The 6-foot-4, 231-pound North Dakota State graduate transfer has become LSU's top defensive playmaker. Cox returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener against Mississippi State, and, against Arkansas, he returned another interception just shy of the goal line. "Obviously a game-winning play," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said of Cox's interception in LSU's 27-24 win over Arkansas, which set up a quick rushing touchdown. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  12/01/20 - Racey McMathSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 211 (DS#44 WR) + More +

LSU's offensive issues are getting compounded by the unavailability of key players. Star wide receiver Terrace Marshall announced Sunday that he was opting out the remainder of the season. LSU coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Monday that starting wide receiver Racey McMath is not expected to play this week against Alabama, and tight end/fullback Tory Carter will also not be available. McMath missed the Texas A&M game due to an injury he suffered against Arkansas. Orgeron did not specify why Carter will not be available. The 6-foot, 244-pound hybrid player was not available against Texas A&M. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  12/01/20 - *Terrace Marshall Jr.Jr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 205 (DS#7 WR) + More +

Marshall's departure, on the surface, was indeed a surprising development, news that came less than two weeks after he gave a speech in a players-only meeting to bring the team together before its 27-24 win at Arkansas. However, it's a decision that was brewing for about a week, multiple sources told The Advocate. Texas A&M was going to be Marshall's final game, and even Friday's news that the Alabama game had been rescheduled didn't change his mind. Orgeron figured this was "strictly a business decision" for Marshall, who is expected to be selected in the early rounds of the NFL draft, and the millions of dollars he'll make as a professional will fulfill the long-held dream he wrote about in a Sunday social media post that said retiring his parents has been his "#1 mission."

"I know he's going to have a great career in the NFL, and he's always going to be a great Tiger," Orgeron said. "He did a lot of things for us… He just thought this was the time to opt out. So, we're going to respect his decision and wish him the best." Orgeron said he respected that Marshall came and spoke to him in person. They had a close relationship. Orgeron recruited Marshall. He played with Marshall's great-uncle, the late Joe Delaney, at Northwestern State. When Myles Brennan was first injured, Marshall met with Orgeron in his office to talk about who the next quarterback would be. "So, it was a little different between a player and a coach with me and him," Orgeron said. "It was almost like family. So, he came and talked to me like a man. He explained his decision. I respected his decision." - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU receiving leader Terrace Marshall Jr. has decided to opt out for the rest of this season, leaving the Tigers without their leading receiver on the week they're scheduled to host No. 1 Alabama. Marshall, a junior, was one of three highly regarded college players to declare for the draft Sunday with a social media post, along with Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and Florida State defensive back Asante Samuel Jr. While Marshall's departure will make LSU (3-4) less competitive this season, coach Ed Orgeron has already begun showing signs of accelerating the rebuilding process that essentially began when 14 players from the 2019 national championship team were selected in the 202 NFL draft. LSU freshman tight end Arik Gilbert is second on the team in receiving and freshman receiver Kayshon Bouttee is fourth. - AP College Football

  11/27/20 - Zach Von RosenbergSr/2021, LSU, 6-4, 235 (DS#7 P) + More +

LSU senior punter Zach Von Rosenberg was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week after his impressive game against Arkansas, the award committee announced Tuesday. Von Rosenberg punted seven times in LSU's 27-24 victory in Razorback Stadium, and five of them were downed inside the 10-yard line. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Zachary High graduate averaged 48.9 yards per punt with a long of 61 yards. This is the second time this season Von Rosenberg was named for the weekly honor. He was named Punter of the Week after LSU's 44-34 loss to Mississippi State in the season opener, when two of his seven punts were downed inside the 10 and he averaged 49.4 yards per punt. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  11/26/20 - Racey McMathSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 211 (DS#44 WR) + More +

Starting LSU wide receiver Racey McMath is not expected to play against Texas A&M after suffering an injury in the Tigers' 27-24 win at Arkansas on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 224-pound senior pulled up hobbling after running a deep route in the third quarter. After laying down on the sideline and holding his left leg, McMath hopped on one leg as athletic trainers helped him to the training table. He did not return in the game. "Racey's out," LSU coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Monday. "He's very doubtful for the game."

McMath, whom Orgeron spoke highly of during the offseason, has started in all six of LSU's games this season, and he recorded his first career touchdown reception against Arkansas. The double-move in man coverage McMath used made him a wide open target for the 30-yard touchdown pass from TJ Finley, which gave LSU a 10-7 lead with 13:54 left in the second quarter. It was indicative of the kind of receiver Orgeron thought McMath could be, and, at least for this week, the offensive coaching staff will have to dig into a deep, yet young, group of receivers to replace McMath. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  11/25/20 - Jay WardrSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 188 (DS#10 FS) + More +

While Ward has had some tough moments this season, including during LSU's season-opening loss to Mississippi State, the sophomore was a big factor in the Tigers pulling out a 27-24 win over Arkansas on Saturday. With the Razorbacks in position for a potential game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes, Ward broke up a pass on a third-and-3 from LSU's 27-yard line. On the next play, Ward blocked a potential game-tying field goal to seal the win for the Tigers. - Birmingham News

  11/21/20 - *Terrace Marshall Jr.Jr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 205 (DS#7 WR) + More +

Terrace Marshall wanted to speak to the team. The LSU wide receiver knows he usually doesn't say too much. Most of the time he's a silent star, a quiet pass catcher who leads the Tigers in every receiving statistical category. He also knows his silence is a strength: Whenever he does say something, his point can get across. This was his time to speak: two weeks removed from a brutal 48-11 loss at Auburn; after two bye weeks, including an extra week off after LSU had to indefinitely postpone its game against Alabama because of another coronavirus outbreak; the Monday before LSU's first game in nearly a month, a matchup against a rejuvenated Arkansas program that began the week a 1½-point favorite.

"I just wanted to play a part of my leadership role on the team," Marshall told reporters Tuesday. Marshall earned his respect on the field. His nine touchdown catches in five games puts him within the 20-touchdown, Southeastern Conference single-season record, and it's possible he collects a few other school records before this abridged, 10-game regular season is over. His production - paired with a work ethic that provoked his mother to tell him "we need to chill out" when he trained nonstop during offseason quarantine - is what gained the respect of LSU coach Ed Orgeron. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU wide receiver Racey McMath has accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl, the event announced Monday evening. McMath, a 6-foot-3, 224-pound New Orleans native, is LSU's fifth-leading receiver with 11 catches for 147 yards. The senior from Edna Karr High is also a star special teams player for LSU, a gunner on the punt team who forced a fumble in the team's 45-41 loss at Missouri. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  11/21/20 - Racey McMathSr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 211 (DS#44 WR) + More +

A targeting penalty in the fourth quarter helped LSU continue its go-ahead drive, scoring with 3:59 left to dispatch Arkansas, 27-24, on Saturday. TJ Finley found Jaray Jenkins for a 13-yard touchdown to put LSU (3-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) ahead by three points. It was the capper to a 10-play, 67-yard drive on which Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon was flagged for a 15-yard targeting penalty and ejected.

LSU sealed the game when Jay Ward got his hands on an AJ Reed 44-yard field goal attempt with 1:24 left, the ball falling well short of the crossbar. Finley threw for 271 yards and two scores, the other in the second quarter on a 30-yard pass to Racey McMath. Arkansas (3-5, 3-5) had taken its first lead late in the third quarter when Feleipe Franks led a 5-play, 95-yard drive. Reed's 22-yard field goal early in the fourth put Arkansas ahead 24-20 ahead of Jenkins' final touchdown. Franks finished 17 of 26 for 339 yards with an interception and a touchdown. He ran for 43 yards and a touchdown, as well. Four of Franks' completions went for more than 50 yards. - LSU/AP College Football

  11/03/20 - *Terrace Marshall Jr.Jr/2021, LSU, 6-3, 205 (DS#7 WR) + More +

LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall had an uncharacteristically quiet afternoon in what turned into a 48-11 rout against Auburn. Marshall, who entered the game with 21 catches for 512 yards and 9 TDs, finished with just four receptions for 28 yards and a long of 13. The result means Marshall's school-record tying streak consecutive games with a touchdown catch ends at seven, which leaves him tied with two others for the LSU record. With two scores in last week's 52-24 blowout of South Carolina, Marshall tied the mark set by Dwayne Bowe (2005) and matched by Jarvis Landry (2012-13). Marshall entered the game against Auburn leading the Southeastern Conference with 128.0 yards receiving per game. His nine receiving touchdowns topped the league stats and was second in the FBS ranks. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  11/03/20 - Liam ShanahanrSr/2022, LSU, 6-5, 305 (DS#14 C) + More +

Do not blame LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini for this one. Yes, the defense allowed more than 500 yards for the third time this season as the Tigers lost 48-11 to unranked Auburn Saturday afternoon, but Pelini's unit blanked Auburn in the first quarter and kept LSU in the game into the second quarter. And, hey, that's improvement for that defense. It was LSU's offense, particularly its offensive line, that stunk like old smashed pumpkins in the sun. The Tigers mustered just 32 rushing yards on 27 carries. Tailback John Emery Jr. was LSU's leading rusher with 21 yards on nine carries. Tailback Tyrion Davis-Price, who rushed for 135 yards last week in a 52-24 win over South Carolina, gained zero on three carries. LSU's offensive line allowed four sacks and five hurries. "We got punched in the face," center Liam Shanahan said. "Absolutely killed. It stings. We got embarrassed on a national stage. We just never really got anything going through the entire game." - Daily Advertiser

  11/02/20 - Jayden DanielsrSr/2024, LSU, 6-3, 210 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Can Jayden Daniels factor into the running game more than he did last year? That should be a resounding "yes". Last year Daniel tallied 355 yards on 125 tries. His most notable scrambles were the 17-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds that gave ASU a 38-34 win over Washington State and the other a 7-yard run in the closing seconds at Michigan State that set up a game-winning 1-yard touchdown by Benjamin. But ASU ran a conservative offense because of the youth up front and didn't want Daniels taking unnecessary risks. But Daniels has progressed, the line should be better and new coordinator Zak Hill's offense is more tailored to Daniels' strengths and one of those is getting out and improvising when a play breaks down. That is a dynamic the defense is going to have to account for. - Arizona Republic
