Early odds for who could go No. 1 overall in the 2022 NFL draft are out and some of the names in the Top 10 are very familiar ones for Arizona football fans. PointsBet has Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, a former Phoenix Pinnacle High standout, No. 1 in its odds to be the top pick at +225. USC QB Kedon Slovis, a former Scottsdale Desert Mountain star, is fifth at +1000. Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels is tied for eighth at +2000 in odds to be the overall No. 1 pick in 2022.   05/05/21 - Welton SpottsvilleSr/2025, LSU, 6-0, 222 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

North Carolina announced defensive back Welton Spottsville has entered the transfer portal. The 5-foot-11 rising junior appeared in 22 games the past two seasons for the Tar Heels with the majority of his playing time spent on special teams. The Heels recruited Spottsville as a receiver out of Havelock (N.C.) High School, where he racked up more than 1,000 receiving yards as a senior and helped lead his team to the 2018 3-A state semifinals. He was rated the No. 32 player in the state by Rivals.com in the Class of 2018. He converted to the secondary before his sophomore season, working mainly as a nickel back. In Carolina's spring game, Spottsville was working behind rising junior Giovanni Biggers on the second unit. The Heels' secondary, if healthy, should be one of the deepest units on the team. - Raleigh News Observer

  05/05/21 - Zach Von RosenbergSr/2021, LSU, 6-4, 235 (DS#7 P) + More +

Former LSU punter Zach Von Rosenberg agreed to an undrafted free agent deal with the Minnesota Vikings, his agent announced Monday afternoon. He became the ninth LSU player to land with his first NFL team either through the draft or free agency this offseason, and he will join former Tigers wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who recorded 1,400 yards receiving in his rookie season with the Vikings last year. At 30 years old, 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, LSU's former punter racked up accolades as a four-year starter for the Tigers. In the 2020 season he punted 59 times, the most in the Southeastern Conference and second-most in all of college football. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  05/04/21 - *Tyler ShelvinrJr/2021, LSU, 6-2, 350 (DS#8 DT) + More +

LSU managed seven selections in the 2021 NFL Draft that concluded Saturday - half of its 14 total in 2020 that tied Ohio State for the record in the seven-round format last year. But the Tigers are at least getting the band back together in Cincinnati as two rookies are joining 2020 overall first pick and starting quarterback Joe Burrow. Defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin of Lafayette was picked in the fourth round Saturday by Cincinnati after wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was the fifth player selected in the first round on Thursday by the Bengals. "I'm getting back with my brothers and ready to go back to work," Shelvin said after going to Cincinnat. "I talked to Ja'Marr but not Joe yet," he said. "I know he probably is busy somewhere. But I know he'll probably call me. Me and Ja'Marr are very close, and we're both ready to get to work. I can't wait." Shelvin made 26 solo tackles and 39 overall with three for losses in 14 starts in 2019 when LSU won the national title at 15-0 with Burrow and Chase directing the offense. - Shreveport Times

  05/01/21 - *JaMarr ChaseJr/2021, LSU, 6-0, 201 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Ja'Marr Chase being picked to the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 5 wasn't exactly a surprise, but a text from the LSU star's former quarterback offered a bit of hint. "Get your bags packed," Burrow texted his former teammate before the draft, as relayed by Chase after his selection. It only took Chase a few words to get to his excitement about the reunion as he spoke to ESPN's Suzy Kolber on stage. "It's a blessing coming true, being out here with my family, you know, especially having this great experience," Chase said. "But for the most part I can't wait to get to work with Joe...I'm ready to work."

The biggest roadblock to the reunion was likely the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4. When Atlanta picked Florida tight end Kyle Pitts at that slot, the crowd at Chase's watch party in New Orleans cheered, according to a report from NOLA.com's Rod Walker. The pick marked the first time since 2007 the same team picked LSU players in the first round of back-to-back drafts. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/30/21 - *Derek Stingley Jr.Jr/2022, LSU, 6-0, 188 (DS#2 CB) + More +

The unofficial start to college football season is less than three months away. The SEC on Wednesday announced its coach appearance schedule for its 2021 football media days, which the conference previously revealed would be held July 19-22. Alabama coach Nick Saban will speak to reporters Wednesday, while Auburn's Bryan Harsin will make the rounds Thursday. The event will be held in Hoover at the Hyatt Regency hotel, which has hosted 18 of the past 19 seasons' media days. The conference had been set to move its football media days to Atlanta in 2020, but that was canceled because the COVID-19 pandemic. Its 2022 site has not been announced. - Birmingham News

  04/16/21 - Austin DeculusrSr/2022, LSU, 6-5, 322 (DS#34 OT) + More +

LSU's depth on the offensive line is very similar to how experienced the unit was going into the 2019 season. The Tigers returned four starters from the 2018 season and thrived in the team's transition to a modern spread offense. Now, thanks to the NCAA's COVID-19 extended eligibility ruling, every starter from the 2020 season decided to return. Austin Deculus will be a fourth-year starter at right tackle, and, a year after being the only returning starter up front, he says this veteran group has what it takes to reclaim the Joe Moore Award for nation's top offensive line. Expect left tackle Dare Rosenthal, left guard Ed Ingram and center Liam Shanahan to have their positions locked up. Each of them could've left for the NFL and more than likely all have been selected somewhere in the draft. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/11/21 - *JaMarr ChaseJr/2021, LSU, 6-0, 201 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Star LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase will attend the NFL draft in person in Cleveland, which means the highly rated prospect will participate in the league's ceremonious return to its more usual fanfare after the coronavirus pandemic forced the annual event to be done virtually last year. Chase is projected to be a high first-round pick, and some mock drafts have him going as high as No. 5 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, where he'd rejoin former LSU teammate Joe Burrow, or No. 6 overall to the Miami Dolphins. The NFL announced last month that the draft, which takes place April 29 until May 1, will be held in iconic Cleveland locations, including FirstEnergy Stadium, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  04/03/21 - Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 202 (DS#54 CB) + More +

Add two more Ohio State football veterans to the list of those unable to practice this spring. Bucknuts first reported that cornerback Sevyn Banks and receiver Kamryn Babb are out for the remainder of spring practice due to injury. An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed both players are unavailable. They join defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, offensive lineman Harry Miller, linebacker Dallas Gant and cornerback Cameron Brown as players known to be out of practice altogether or refraining from contact drills. Banks started all eight games in 2020 at cornerback opposite Shaun Wade. He led the Buckeyes with seven pass breakups along with 23 tackles and one interception. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  03/20/21 - Myles BrennanrSr/2023, LSU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Imagine a day, years from now, in which an athlete suffers an injury that tore abdominal muscles and ligaments and required surgery. The athlete visits the doctor's office, sits on the examination chair, and the doctor walks up and says, "you're gonna need Myles Brennan surgery." That hypothetical was almost possible. A brand new surgery was almost named after LSU's quarterback, whose season-ending abdominal injury against Missouri last season was so rare that it confounded every specialist he saw. Ed Orgeron's 2021: Winning expectations, 'sense of urgency' and AD's warnings to stay out of politics

Brennan said copies of his MRIs were sent to NFL and MLB franchises, golf and tennis trainers. None of them had ever seen an injury like it before. In an interview with reporters Thursday, Brennan said the doctor he visited in Baton Rouge told him that he had two options: 1) let the injury heal on its own, or 2) undergo a surgery that would be the first of its kind. "Personally, I've never done surgery on this," Brennan said the doctor told him. "So, we'd be naming the surgery after you if you wanted to." - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/19/21 - Joe FoucharSr/2023, LSU, 5-10, 198 (DS#37 SS) + More +

Arkansas' defensive backs had blinders on during the first few days of spring drills under Sam Pittman last week. Literally. Each player in the Razorbacks' defensive backfield ran through position drills, team work and more with white tape attached to the upper-outside sight paths of their facemasks, blocking their periphery. Cornerbacks coach Sam Carter, who is in his second year with the program, was behind the move. "He wants us to keep our eyes in the right spot," Joe Foucha said Tuesday. "It's basically teaching us eye discipline. Don't look back at the quarterback (unless necessary), keep your eyes on your man. Just little things like that. "If it's a run, I know I've got to get in that run fit. I'm not turning my head to see who's trying to crack me. I'm more focusing on the run fit and keeping my eyes on the quarterback." When Arkansas hit the practice field outside Walker Pavilion on Tuesday, the blinders were gone. Carter felt as if the tactic had served its purpose. "Pretty much we kept our eyes on our man," Foucha said. "We didn't look and we kept our eyes on the quarterback if the player had to be looking at the quarterback. We basically kind of completed our task." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  03/13/21 - Micah BaskervillerSr/2023, LSU, 6-1, 224 (DS#32 ILB) + More +

LSU linebacker Micah Baskerville will not participate in spring football while focusing on academics, an LSU official confirmed Thursday. Baskerville still remains on the team, and he is expected to return for the 2021 season. The 6-foot-1, 231-pound junior was a key piece in LSU's defense in 2020, stepping into the starting lineup against South Carolina on Oct. 24. Baskerville started in five games last season and was LSU's fourth-leading tackler with 55 total tackles and 4½ tackles for loss. His role increased late in the season, when he started in five of the final six games in place of Damone Clark. Baskerville missed the Florida game Dec. 12, when he did not make the trip with the team to Gainesville. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  03/03/21 - *JaMarr ChaseJr/2021, LSU, 6-0, 201 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Last week, LSU announced that its NFL pro day is scheduled for March 31, and, on Tuesday, the university released of the eight players who will participate in the wake of a canceled NFL combine. The pro day, when NFL scouts test and time LSU's draft-eligible players, is all the more important this year because the annual NFL scouting combine did not happen because of coronavirus concerns. The list includes four players who opted out for the full 2020 season or at least part of the year. LSU wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall, both considered first-round talents, headline the offensive side while linebacker Jabril Cox, a Butkus Award semifinalist in 2020, is one LSU's top names on defense along with defensive back Kary Vincent, who started at nickel safety in three seasons in Baton Rouge. Safety JaCoby Stevens, fullback/tight end Tory Carter and wide receiver Racey McMath will also participate in the scouting event. - Baton Rouge Advocate

A year after LSU's spring football program was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, the athletic department has organized a full practice schedule that begins March 16 and ends with a spring game April 17. The schedule, which LSU announced Wednesday, has 15 practices plus the spring game. LSU's pro day is also scheduled for March 31.   02/10/21 - Mike Jones Jr.rJr/2023, LSU, 6-0, 227 (DS#40 ILB) + More +

Former Clemson linebacker Mike Jones Jr. has found his new home. Jones announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he is transferring to LSU. He started seven games for Clemson this past season, recording 30 tackles, four tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions. Jones played Clemson's Nickel/Sam spot in Brent Venables' defense, taking over for Isaiah Simmons after he was drafted in the top 10 of the 2020 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals. With Jones moving on, rising sophomore Trenton Simpson is the favorite to replace him. Jones signed with Clemson for the class of 2018 as a four-star recruit. - The State
