  07/25/22 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

Kenny Logan Jr. has a smile on his face, and his right hand raised in the air. Standing on the field inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, last week, Logan is aiming to take a turn at asking his Kansas football teammate a question. It's the Big 12 Conference's media days for football, and sophomore running back Devin Neal is in the midst of answering questions from reporters. Logan, a senior safety, begins to grill - not really - Neal. "Who would be the best player on KU's defense," Logan asks. "Best player on KU's defense? I would probably say (super-senior defensive lineman) Caleb Sampson," says Neal, deadpan, before smiling as he continues, "Nah, I'm playing Kenny, you got it." "Who would be the hardest person to get by on KU's defense?" Logan presses, smiling still. "Kenny Logan," Neal responds, before laughing and moving on. 'That's just Kenny being Kenny' In all, the exchange lasts only about 30 seconds during a day that has athletes and coaches from various Big 12 teams talking about the months ahead.

If only for a brief moment, it breaks up a setting where the questions can become repetitive at times. And, as should likely be expected, Logan is the one involved. Because, among the Jayhawks set to play for head coach Lance Leipold this fall, there might not be a bigger personality than Logan. And don't just take a teammate's word for it, like junior quarterback Jalon Daniels. Logan feels that way, too. "Just because I'm always outgoing," Logan said, after picking himself. "I always like to have fun. I'll pick, mess with, anybody on the team, and they know that's just Kenny being Kenny. So, I would say definitely me. I mess with coach Leipold. I mess with coach Leipold when he's down. I mess with (director of sports performance) coach (Matt Gildersleeve). I'll mess with anybody just to brighten up their day." - Topeka Capital Journal

2022 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCHLIST: Bryce Foster, Texas A&M,...Foster started all 12 games at center as a freshman in 2021. The Katy, Texas, native helped anchor an offensive line that cleared the way for one of the nation's most productive running back tandems, with each back rushing for at least 900 yards and six touchdowns on the year. By season's end, he earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors, to go along with FWAA and The Athletic Freshman All-America Team accolades. A standout offensive lineman at Taylor High School, Foster did not log a snap at center during his high school career. - Texas A&M Football

  07/23/22 - Doug EmilienrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 WR) + More +

The only thing Jalon Daniels knew upon Doug Emilien's decision to transfer from Minnesota to Kansas was that Ky Thomas used to be one of Emilien's roommates. The connection between the two figures to be much closer - and soon. Daniels, who is expected to begin the season as the Jayhawks' starting quarterback, is likely to benefit from the spring addition of Emilien, a speedy, 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver.

So is Kansas, which faces plenty of uncertainty in the passing game after Kwamie Lassiter II, a sixth-year senior last season, moved on to the NFL. "Ky told me a lot about him coming in, told me that he was a beautiful route-runner, somebody that was going to come in and work with his head down no matter what the situation was," Daniels said last week at Big 12 football media days. "I can say he definitely came in and did that." A three-star prospect in the class of 2020 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Emilien played in just two games in his two seasons with the Golden Gophers. When Thomas, a running back who is from Topeka, decided to leave Minnesota for Kansas in January, Emilien chose to stick it out. It wasn't long before he made the same choice. "It was my decision, but he told me that we're trying to build something, and I want that," Emilien said in the spring. - Lawrence Journal World

  07/20/22 - Devin NealSr/2025, Kansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Devin Neal said he's excited by the fact that the Jayhawks don't have to spend preseason camp learning the offense and can instead focus on being more complex schematically. "At spring ball, we were testing a few things to see how unique we can be with our offense and dynamic with the different running backs," Neal said. "Now, we don't have to be running basic offenses. Now that we have that year, the coaching staff isn't just now getting in. we've developed our offense and we know what to expect. Now we can build on that and get more at-bats."

Neal said he is up to 215 pounds following the offseason workout and conditioning program and will attempt to play at that weight this season. "I can't play another season at 200," Neal said. "The next day is always sore, and obviously, just being stronger, being a running back, it's going to help me be more dynamic." Neal, who is 5-foot-11, said he thinks being stronger comes with being more athletic, which means he can be more confident when he's on the field. - Lawrence Journal World

  07/18/22 - Earl Bostick Jr.rSr/2023, Kansas, 6-6, 309 (DS#15 OT) + More +

Earl Bostick Jr. played for three head coaches and eight position coaches during five seasons at Kansas. But with a sixth year of eligibility available and the most stability he's had since graduating high school, there was no doubt Bostick, the Jayhawks' starting left tackle, was going to return for this season. "I stuck it out because I wanted to change the program since I got here in 2017," Bostick said. "I wanted to be part of that change or the first steps in changing the program to the right direction."

When Bostick enrolled at Kansas, players couldn't profit off their name, image or likeness. David Booth's name was not yet on Memorial Stadium. Texas and Oklahoma had not yet decided to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. Bostick has been a tight end, a right tackle and a left tackle. He has caught a touchdown pass and scored a two-point conversion. After playing his first two seasons for David Beaty and his next two for Les Miles, he is now entering his second under Lance Leipold. "I feel like every year is something different about college ball," Bostick said. "But at the end of the day, it's football. We just have to go out there and play football." - Lawrence Journal World

  07/12/22 - Monte McGaryrSr/2023, Kansas, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Monte McGary finally knows his long, complicated college journey will end close to home. McGary, who is from Omaha, Nebraska, is transferring from Utah State to Kansas and will be eligible to play this season after his application for admission to the university was approved on Friday. "Kind of the best-case scenario happened," McGary said. A 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back, McGary played free safety at Utah State last season but is expecting to play cornerback, his preferred position, at Kansas. He would be the 19th player the Jayhawks have added via transfer since the end of last season and the fifth in the secondary.

McGary said he chose Kansas over Illinois, Memphis and Western Kentucky because of the opportunity to play in the Big 12, as well as to be near family members who can help him and his girlfriend, Ty Stovall, raise their 2-year-old daughter, Xhuri. His intends to be on campus and join his teammates next week. "Being closer, definitely, is one of the reasons it'd be easier - to access some of the support that we have available and being able to access after being so far away the last few years," McGary said. - Lawrence Journal World

  07/11/22 - Devin NealSr/2025, Kansas, 5-11, 213 (DS#14 RB) + More +

What's possible for Devin Neal as a sophomore? Regardless of what was realistic to expect of Neal as a freshman in 2021, the Jayhawks wound up needing him to step up and he went on to lead them in rushing yards and touchdowns. He tallied 707 yards and eight scores on the ground, while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. That, in addition to recording seven receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown. The picture is a bit different now for Kansas at running back in 2022, considering the additions of redshirt sophomore transfers Ky Thomas and Sevion Morrison. Should they deliver as expected, Neal won't need to be relied upon as much. There's more of a bevy of weapons for offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki to look toward. - Topeka Capital Journal

  07/08/22 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Although the Kansas football team's players and coaches enter the season with a renewed sense of optimism, those on the outside will apparently need some time to buy in. The Jayhawks were again picked to finish last in the Big 12 preseason poll, which was released Thursday afternoon. Forty-one people voted in the poll and Kansas received 48 points, meaning not everyone projected a last-place finish.

It's the 12th consecutive season in which they received the fewest votes from the panel of media voters. They have been chosen last every year since 2011, the first season after the conference contracted to 10 teams. The panel has been correct for most of that stretch, as the only time the Jayhawks did not finish last was in 2014. That season, they went 3-9, including 1-8 in the conference, to finish ahead of Iowa State, which did not win a Big 12 game. Kansas finished 2-10 last season and went 1-8 in the Big 12, with the stunning overtime victory at Texas on Nov. 13 serving as the highlight of its season. - Topeka Capital Journal

  07/07/22 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

Kenny Logan Jr. is still gaining attention for what he accomplished last season. The Kansas senior, whose 113 tackles were the most in the conference by a safety, was selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team on Wednesday. He was the only player on the Jayhawks recognized by the conference, which named 29 players, including five defensive backs, to a first and a second team. Logan, an All-Big 12 second-team player last season, also forced two fumbles, recovered one, had an interception and broke up six passes.

He had a season-high 15 tackles in the 31-28 loss at TCU on Nov. 20 and followed that with 14 tackles in the finale, a 34-28 home loss to West Virginia on Nov. 27. He also finished with at least 10 tackles in three other games last season. A starter since 2020, Logan is expected to resume that role this fall for the Jayhawks, though the back end of the secondary will look different than it did a year ago. - Lawrence Journal World

  07/06/22 - Dominick PunirSr/2024, Kansas, 6-5, 313 (DS#5 OG) + More +

The Kansas football team added another offensive tackle to the mix when Dominick Puni, formerly of Central Missouri, decided to transfer and join the Jayhawks. Puni, from St. Charles, Missouri, is not a recent addition for coach Lance Leipold and his staff. Rather, he decided to transfer to Kansas on March 7, two days after he took an official visit to the university and attended the men's basketball game against Texas, and chose not to publicize it. A 6-foot-5, 300-pound graduate of Francis Howell Central High outside St. Louis, Puni has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

He played in seven games and started three at right tackle for Central Missouri in 2018, started all 13 games at left tackle in 2019 and started the first two games last season before missing the rest of the season with an unspecified injury (the MIAA did not play football in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic). JayhawkSlant.com was the first to report that Puni had transferred to Kansas on Saturday, once he enrolled at the university. Puni is the 19th player to transfer to Kansas since the end of last season and the third offensive lineman, though he's the first who did not leave Buffalo. - Lawrence Journal World

  07/01/22 - Lorenzo McCaskillrSr/2023, Kansas, 6-0, 223 (DS#60 OLB) + More +

Lorenzo McCaskill, a second-team all-Sun Belt linebacker last season at Louisiana, has decided to transfer to Kansas and will be eligible to play this season. McCaskill, who is 6 feet and 220 pounds, led Louisiana with 84 tackles last season while playing in 13 games. A native of Detroit, he spent his first season at Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi, before transferring to Louisiana in 2018 and will have just one season of eligibility remaining.

He is the second linebacker who has decided to transfer to Kansas in the last month. Tristian Fletcher, who was a freshman last season at Trinity Valley Community College, did so on June 11 during an official visit. "I appreciate KU and the coaching staff for the loyalty I have seen already," McCaskill wrote on Twitter. "For that, I will give this program all I have." McCaskill started 12 games last season at Louisiana, which reached a bowl game in each of his four seasons and was the Sun Belt champion in 2020 and 2021. He was the mike linebacker for the Ragin' Cajuns who had a base 3-4 defense but often ran 3-3-5 principles with a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive back. He decided to transfer in early January, not long after coach Billy Napier left for Florida, and Kansas offered him a scholarship on June 14. - Topeka Capital Journal

  07/01/22 - Craig YoungrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-3, 226 (DS#24 OLB) + More +

The only constant for Craig Young during his college years has been change. Young, who committed to play at Ohio State intending to play wide receiver, will be playing linebacker for Kansas in the fall. In the four years in between his decision and this spring, Young was moved to safety, asked to play linebacker, returned to safety - and, in January, he headed to Kansas, where he will play linebacker and nickelback. Come this fall, Young wants to be able to focus on doing one thing well above all else. "The role for me is just to be the best player I can be," Young said. "Do my job. Everything is going to fall into place if I just do my job and we'll win games."

Young, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining, was one of the best high school football players in Indiana in the Class of 2019. He was ranked the No. 10 player in Indiana by Rivals.com and received scholarship offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Iowa State and Indiana, among others, before choosing the Buckeyes. Young will likely assume a starting role come the fall - and if not, he's almost certain to be playing significant snaps for the Jayhawks. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is "really a bona fide athlete," according to defensive coordinator Brian Borland, who has been impressed by his talent. "His athleticism, his speed, his length is something that we need more of, and so he's been able to step in," Borland said. "It's a credit to his talent, but again, he's been so good in terms of really being hungry to learn, hungry to just work hard all the time (in the) weight room. Anything that we're doing, he's all business." - Topeka Capital Journal

  07/01/22 - Caleb TaylorrSr/2025, Kansas, 6-3, 315 (DS#200 DT) + More +

There will be something a bit different about Caleb Taylor the next time he plays in a college football game for Kansas. The 6-foot-2 defensive tackle has put on nearly 40 pounds since early last season, and he believes that extra weight will leave him better prepared for the rigors of the game come this fall. Taylor weighed 258 pounds prior to a loss at Duke on Sept. 25 - the third of four games he started as a redshirt freshman. By late March, he had weighed in at 297 pounds, the result of several weeks of proper dieting and a strength and conditioning program meant to help him better play his position.

"It took a lot of work, honestly," Taylor said. "Going into the weight room after practice, getting extra reps in, getting extra sets, being more conscientious of everything that I was putting into my body - but really the biggest part of it was the weight room, and since I did it like that, I was able to gain that much weight but not lose any strength, speed, anything. So, it's good weight. I feel good. I feel great, actually, and I'm glad I got it. I feel way better with it." Taylor, who finished with 14 tackles, played in every game for the Jayhawks last season but did not start again after a loss at Iowa State on Oct. 2 as the team tried to determine the best way to rotate its defensive tackles. He only played football for three years before enrolling at Kansas - and even then only played defensive end - so he found the move to the inside of the line to be a different type of challenge. - Lawrence Journal World

  06/22/22 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

The University of Kansas athletic department has joined forces with Altius Sports Partners for its name, image and likeness initiatives, KU Athletic Director Travis Goff announced Monday. The partnership, which is centered around Altius as a consultant for best practices in the NIL space, was announced by Altius late last week. It does not replace KU's deal with Sixth Man Strategies, rather opens a door for Altius to work with Sixth Man Strategies, and others, to provide NIL opportunities for KU's student-athletes. Sixth Man Strategies - and, later, 12th Man Strategies for KU football - has been handling KU's men's basketball NIL opportunities since the NCAA first began allowing athletes to profit on NIL last July.

According to the Altius release, "the partnership is designed to maintain (KU's) position on the cutting edge in the changing collegiate environment. The Altius Sports team will provide coaches and staff with educational workshops and resources targeting areas such as group licensing, managing external partnerships, and recruiting. Altius Sports will also assist in identifying and advising on strategies to support and empower the program's student-athletes across varsity sports." During Monday's quarterly meeting of the Kansas Athletic, Inc., board of directors, Goff said he was "alarmed" by what had taken place with NIL on a national scale during the past six months. But he added that he remained proud of the way KU approached the changing landscape and said he thought it would be critical for KU's athletic department to continue to evolve in the space. - Topeka Capital Journal
