  Cole Johnson passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns, Latrele Palmer rushed for 167 yards and a score and third-seeded James Madison eliminated No. 6 seed Montana 28-6 in the FCS quarterfinals on Friday night. The victory, witnessed by 14,690, was No. 100 for JMU coach Curt Cignetti. Montana (10-3) lost starting quarterback Cam Humphrey and top receiver Sam Akem to early injuries. Akem had Montana's first reception of the game for 35 yards but was later seen on the sideline with his arm in a sling. Humphrey left the game after taking a hit while scrambling early in the second quarter. The Dukes (12-1) have won eight in a row and next face either No. 2 seed North Dakota State (11-1) or No. 7 seed ETSU (11-1) in a semifinal on Dec. 17 or 18. Johnson connected with Devin Ravenel on an 82-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter; Palmer reeled off a 50-yard scoring run in the second to cap a 96-yard drive; Kris Thornton caught a 3-yard pass from Johnson in the third; and Lorenzo Bryant added a 9-yard rushing TD in the fourth.   Cole Johnson passed for five touchdowns, ran for a sixth and James Madison scored 17 points after three takeaways in the last three minutes of the first half to defeat Southeastern Louisiana 59-20 in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday. The third-seeded Dukes (11-1), ranked No. 2 in the FCS coaches poll, take on No. 5-ranked and sixth-seeded Montana in the quarterfinals Dec. 10-11. The NCAA Selection Committee was to meet Saturday night to set the date. Saturday's game, played before 11,743 at Bridgeforth Stadium, hinged upon a 17-point surge in about the last 170 seconds of the first half. Before: The contest was a fairly tight 21-13 late in the second quarter. After: James Madison went into halftime ahead 38-13 after three turnovers - a Cole Kelley fumble and two interceptions - led to two one-play touchdown drives and an Ethan Ratke 25-yard field goal.

After the fumble recovery, Johnson threw a 21-yard scoring pass to Antwane Wells in the end zone. After the first interception, Johnson took off on a 35-yard keeper to score. The Dukes opened the second half with Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey returning a third Kelley interception 43 yards for a touchdown and the route was on. Tucker-Dorsey had two interceptions in the game along with five solo tackles and a sack. Wells finished with 123 yards and three touchdowns on six catches. - James Madison/AP College Football

  2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Cole Johnson, James Madison, QB, Sr.,...Johnson turned into one of the country's top signal callers in 2021, going 233-of-342 for 2,953 passing yards and 32 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He added 184 rushing yards with a team-best five rushing scores. Johnson paced the CAA in passing yards per game (268.5), passing touchdowns (32), completion percentage (68.1%), total offense (285.18) and pass efficiency rating (170.37).
