Dylan Morris, James Madison, Player News

Dylan Morris came under heavy criticism as the starting quarterback for the Washington Huskies during their 4-8 season in 2021. Morris, expected to be the backup again this season to Michael Penix Jr., has earned himself a big fan - Ryan Grubb, the Huskies' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach - for how he has handled himself after all that criticism. "I don't know if there's many guys that I admire more than Dylan Morris because I think that there's grown men that would be able to take about 1% of the criticism that Dylan's taken, and operate at the level that Dylan operates at," Grubb said Wednesday about the former Graham-Kapowsin High School star.

In 2021, Morris completed 220 of 362 passes for 2,458 yards with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. But the season started with a shocking loss to Montana and it didn't get much better. "He knows the expectations that this community has for this program, and there is nobody more disappointed on a 4-8 season than Dylan," said Grubb, who said Morris has grown a lot as a player since then. "I think he admitted to himself to things that he needed to get better at and he owned the mistakes that he made." Grubb said Morris is one of the hardest workers on the team and does a good job "being in the day - be great today and then tomorrow, do the same thing." Grubb said a quarterback has to "have thick skin" and he said Morris has taken that to heart. "I admire that kid a ton," Grubb said. "I don't that I would have had the mental fortitude to blast through some of the stuff that he has and still be really positive." - Seattle Times

Dylan Morris knows the difference. Last fall, the 6-foot, 202-pound quarterback was the unfortunate face of an offensive implosion - and thus, an easy target. He completed 60.6% of his passes and threw for 2,458 yards with 14 passing touchdowns and three rushing scores. He also threw more interceptions (12) than any other quarterback in the Pac-12 Conference. In an equally unforeseen and unacceptable 4-8 season, Morris was handed the reins to a helplessly archaic offense - and both he and the Huskies struggled. The sophomore passer from Puyallup said Wednesday, following Washington's 10th practice of the spring, it was "most definitely" the most difficult season of his career.

And as Morris sputtered, the social media masses stewed. The former Graham-Kapowsin quarterback and four-star recruit received ridicule from an enthusiastically vocal faction of the Husky fan base, while Sam Huard - a five-star freshman and perceived savior - waited teasingly in the wings. Morris, of course, understands the spotlight that accompanies his specific position. But he won't stare at the sun. "I was off social media all through the season and still am. It's not a real place," he said. "People can say what they want, but it's not a real place. Ninety-nine percent of those people are not going to say anything in person. Honestly, it's more amusing to me when somebody says something (online), because we're out here doing this, and where are they at? "But I just stayed off social media. With that stuff, like I said, it's not a real place. What they say doesn't affect what I can do on the field." - Seattle Times

Dylan Morris threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jalen McMillan with 21 seconds remaining, lifting Washington past Stanford 20-13 on Saturday night. Sean McGrew ran for 114 yards on 19 carries to pace Washington's best game of the year running the ball. Cameron Davis added 99 yards on 18 attempts to help the Huskies (4-4, 3-2 Pac-12) pile up a season-high 229 yards on the ground. Peyton Henry matched his career-high with four field goals.

Afterward, loud music blared from Washington's locker room as the Huskies celebrated their first win in Stanford since 2007. "That feeling right there is just going to give us so much more confidence," Morris said. "That's the resilience we have on this team. We harped on all this week details and coming out with energy and starting fast. That definitely showed in this game." Stanford has lost three straight since knocking off then-No. 3 Oregon. "Not the way we wanted to come out after the bye," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "Honestly (we) played defense good the entire game but once again it comes down to two minutes and we couldn't get the stop to end the game. That's how you lose." The Cardinal (3-5, 2-4) trailed most of the game before scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to take a brief lead. Quarterback Tanner McKee scored on a 1-yard dive and Joshua Karty kicked a 43-yard field goal that put Stanford up 13-12. The Huskies turned the ball over on downs on its ensuing possession but forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 2:51 remaining. - Washington/AP College Football

Dylan Morris is more than his measurables. The 6-foot, 200-pound passer from Puyallup is more than the testing numbers and statistics printed next to his name. He's more than his recruiting ranking. He's more than a purple jersey and a perpetually underrated right arm. On Friday, following UW's first fall practice, Jimmy Lake declared, "Dylan Morris is our starter." He'll take the opening snap Sept. 4 against Montana, while sixth-year senior Patrick O'Brien and five-star freshman Sam Huard watch from the sideline. There are multiple reasons why.

To begin, Morris - who threw for 897 yards with six total touchdowns and three interceptions in four starts last fall - is the starter because he's unrelentingly obsessed with personal improvement. He's constantly learning … and leading, too. "When you put that much time into something, and you work at it and it's important to you, guys know that," UW offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach John Donovan said. "You've got to be seen in the weight room. You've got to be seen in the film room. You've got to be seen studying. You've got to do the right thing. He does everything he's supposed to do. "I think guys will respond to him, because they respect him. When they see a guy doing what he's supposed to do when he's supposed to do it, and doing extra, you're going to listen to someone like that. He does have some great leadership ability." - Seattle Times

Following Washington's first fall practice on Friday, head coach Jimmy Lake was asked when he'd like to decide on a starting quarterback. But for the most part, it sounds like he already has. "Well Dylan Morris is our starter. Dylan Morris is our starter, so it sounds solidified to me," Lake said. "Like I told you guys down in Los Angeles (for Pac-12 Media Days last week), everybody on our team who is a starter or a returning starter, if they decide to slip and not play as well and someone plays better than them - at corner, at left tackle, at center, at quarterback, at wide receiver, at linebacker, punter, kicker, every single position - if someone eventually plays better than them during training camp then they all have a chance to be replaced. "But I feel very confident in our quarterback position right now, and Dylan Morris is our starter. We have two guys behind him who are very, very talented, and I'm excited to see what they do."

Lake certainly provided more clarity on Friday than he did the previous fall, when the Huskies' first-year head coach declined to name a starter before Morris took the opening snap against Oregon State on Nov. 14. In an abbreviated four-game sprint, Morris - a 6-foot, 200-pounder from Puyallup - threw for 897 yards with six total touchdowns and three interceptions, leading UW to a 3-1 record and a Pac-12 North crown. Last spring, Morris took the vast majority of first-team reps, with graduate transfer Patrick O'Brien and five-star freshman Sam Huard working in behind him. O'Brien - a 6-5, 230-pound sixth-year senior - joined the program this offseason after throwing for 3,394 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions in the last two seasons at Colorado State. - Seattle Times

Dylan Morris hit Cade Otton on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left and Washington rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to beat Utah 24-21 on Saturday night. Morris was brilliant on Washington's final drive, taking the Huskies 88 yards in less than four minutes, capping the winning drive by rolling to his left and throwing across his body to find his big tight end. Otton had eight catches for 108 yards and a pair of second-half TD receptions. It was the fifth time in school history Washington rallied from a deficit of 21 or more points to win, and the first since 1989 when the Huskies trailed UCLA 21-0 and rallied for a 28-27 win.

Morris was 23 of 38 for 272 yards and the two TD passes to go along with three interceptions. He was 6 of 9 for 71 yards on Washington's final possession. The unexpected matchup between the Utes and Huskies came about after both teams had their originally scheduled games canceled due to COVID-19 issues with their opponents. Washington was supposed to play rival Washington State while Utah was scheduled to travel to Arizona State. Jake Bentley was 16 of 23 for 144 yards and one touchdown in his first start for Utah. But Bentley also threw two interceptions, one in the third quarter that helped Washington's comeback and a desperation throw that was intercepted by Trent McDuffie in the closing seconds. - Washington/AP College Football
