  10/17/20 - Shai WertsrSr/2021, Georgia Southern, 5-11, 205 (DS#56 QB) + More +

Shai Werts threw three touchdown passes and added a 4-yard touchdown run to help Georgia Southern beat Massachusetts 41-0 on Saturday. Werts was 11-of-16 passing for 128 yards with no interceptions and finished with 13 carries for 76 yards. On the fifth play from scrimmage, Werts hit Malik Murray for a 47-yard touchdown catch-and-run, then added TD passes of 8 and 10 yards to Beau Johnson that gave Georgia Southern (3-1) a 21-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first half. UMass (0-1) was limited to 191 total yards, converted just 2-of-13 third downs with four three-and-outs, and never moved past the Georgia Southern 21-yard line.

UMass announced the cancellation of its 2020 football season on Aug. 11 due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic but later reversed course and on Sept. 21 the school said it would play a limited number of games to be announced as they are scheduled and Saturday's contest against Georgia Southern is the only one currently on the slate for the Minutemen. Georgia Southern's 25,000-seat Allen E. Paulson Stadium was limited to a capacity of 6,200 due to concerns related to pandemic. - Georgia Southern/AP College Football

NaJee Thompson's effort Saturday night certainly was special, and he was rewarded as the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Thompson, a junior slotback, blocked two ULM punts, with the second one recovered by teammate Rashad Byrd in the end zone for what proved to be the winning points. His three career blocks - tied for the seventh-most in Eagles history - all have come at ULM, and the first in 2018 also resulted in a score. "I just want to make plays for the special teams, 24/7," Thompson said after the victory. "Practice, when special teams come up, it's like a rush for me. In the game, every opportunity I take. Special teams, I definitely take pride in. I love it. Even when I get (to play) on offense, I get a limited opportunity, so when I go out there, I've got to make them count." Thompson is the first Eagles player to receive an SBC weekly honor this season. - Savannah Morning News

More than 97,000 fans and spectators filed into Tiger Stadium on Aug. 31, 2019 to watch LSU host Georgia Southern. Two of those fans were Laurie and Tony Beck, Anthony Beck II's parents. The Becks made the trip from Guyton, Georgia to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to watch their son make his first collegiate start for Georgia Southern. "When we got there, we were so excited," Laurie said. "The team was down there during warm-ups and my husband and I went to say hi. (Anthony) came over to us and he was so calm and cool. I couldn't believe it." Beck punted nine times in the Eagles' loss to the eventual national champions, highlighted by a 74-yard boot that fell inside the LSU 20-yard-line. The kick was a yard shy of tying the program record.

The outing against the Tigers wasn't the first time people were treated to Beck's powerful right leg. For Patrick Means, that showcase began in the fall of 2014. South Effingham High School, where Beck was a freshman, faced Richmond Hill, where Means is an assistant coach, midway through the region schedule. Means usually stands on the sideline to coach, but for this game he was in the press box. After the game, Means tracked down Beck's parents to offer private kicking lessons. "In the game, he hit some absolute bomb punts," Means recalled. "He's a prototype punter for the NFL. I'm sitting here talking to him that if he buys into this punting thing, you can go beyond college football if you want to." - Savannah Morning News
