Corner Asante Samuel Jr. has been absolute ball hawk for FSU's secondary, with three interceptions already this season after snagging just one as a sophomore. He's the leader of a mid-tier pass defense that, interestingly, is coming off its best game. The Seminoles held Notre Dame to 201 passing yards, although game flow played a role in that number. - Raleigh News Observer

  10/16/20 - Jordan TravisrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-1, 203 (DS#10 QB) + More +

After two weeks of quarterback play, Jordan Travis has proven to be one of Florida State's best offensive weapons. Travis made his first start against Notre Dame last Saturday and helped keep the Seminoles within reach in the first half. Travis threw for a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to Tamorrion Terry to give the 'Noles their first and, ultimately, last lead of the game in the 42-26 defeat at Notre Dame Stadium. Although the defense was lackluster, the offense has begun to show growth on the back of its win two weekends ago against Jacksonville State. Travis has proved himself to be a formidable quarterback.

And while just being a redshirt sophomore, the ceiling seems to only be getting higher after his first start. Though Travis suffered a hand injury late in the loss against Notre Dame, he is expected to be ready for Saturday's home game against North Carolina. FSU coach Mike Norvell said Travis practiced on a limited basis Sunday, adding that "everything is moving in a positive direction." Norvell was pleased with Travis' performance against the Irish. "His poise, his composure, some of the play-making ability that showed up through the course of the game was really impressive. And like I said in the opening, there are some plays he'd like to have back," Norvell said. "But I thought he did a great job in his first start and am excited to see him continue to build upon that with what he's going to be able to do here this week moving forward." - Times Union

  10/12/20 - Jordan TravisrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-1, 203 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis provided a much-needed spark for a lethargic Seminoles offense during his first career start, but it wasn't enough. The improved Seminoles suffered their third loss of the season, falling 42-26 on the road Saturday to No. 5 Notre Dame. Travis combined for 300 total yards of offense, scoring two touchdowns, but a poorly thrown ball that was intercepted in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter squashed a late chance to cut into the Fighting Irish's lead. "There were some bright moments, but we didn't get the job done," FSU coach Mike Norvell said.

While the offense showed signs of life, the FSU defense didn't have an answer for Notre Dame's ground game, which amassed 353 yards and four touchdowns. It was the most rushing yards against a Seminoles team since Notre Dame rushed for 365 yards on Nov. 10, 2018. Tailbacks Kyren Williams (185 yards) and Chris Tyree (104 yards) combined for 288 of the 353 yards with touchdowns of 46, 1 and 45 yards. The Fighting Irish finished with 554 yards of total offense, the most allowed by an FSU team since Boise State amassed 621 yards on Aug. 31, 2019. The team averaged 8.3 yards per play during the game. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State receiver Tamorrion Terry was visibly frustrated as he stood on the sideline and watched the Seminoles get embarrassed at Miami two Saturday ago. Terry played only 14 snaps in the game and his appearance was counterproductive. He had no receptions and one rushing attempt for a loss of four yards. The second-team All-ACC player has been one of the more reliable receivers on the wide receiver core, but was limited earlier in the season against Miami after an injury that he suffered in the first game of the season against Georgia Tech. If that wasn't enough, Terry's grandmother passed away the day before the Georgia Tech game. Battling through adversity has been the staple for this year's Florida State team, and Terry is a prime example of head coach Mike Norvell's philosophy. The redshirt junior stepped up in a big way in the Seminoles' 41-24 win over visiting Jacksonville State University last Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.

"Responding in a positive way when adversity strikes is for everyone, not just Terry. Obviously you can point to a lot of different examples so far in a short season when we have and we have not responded in the right way," Norvell said. "To be able to acknowledge that, and more important to be able to change that...but to always be in control of that emotion and that response, that's what's important. Because it allows you to stay focused on the job at-hand, it allows you when you are down 21-7 to make sure you're putting guys and yourself in the best position possible to go out there and achieve success on the next play." - Times Union

Jordan Travis came off the bench to lead Florida State to touchdowns on five straight drives as the Seminoles rallied to knock off FCS program Jacksonville State 41-24 on Saturday. Travis completed 13 of 18 passes for 215 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Keyshawn Helton. The redshirt sophomore also added a touchdown run, one of four TD runs from the Seminoles. Florida State (1-2) trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and went scoreless on four opening drives under the direction of true freshman quarterback Tate Rodemaker.

Zerrick Cooper completed 22 of 30 passes for 232 yards and had a rushing touchdown. Cooper, who threw for back-to-back 3,000-yard seasons at JSU, was efficient but a fourth-quarter interception snagged by Florida State's Asante Samuel Jr. all but ended the Gamecocks' upset bid. JSU's Kolbi Fuqua also had a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Lawrance Toafili ran for 99 yards and a touchdown for Florida State, which finished with 256 rushing yards on 53 carries. The Seminoles were held to just 38 first-half rushing yards. - Florida State/AP College Football

Arkansas cornerback Jarques McClellion announced on Thursday that he was opting out of the season due to family issues with covid-19, joining receiver Shamar Nash and offensive lineman Chibueze Nwanna as opt-outs. McClellion announced his decision with a Twitter post, writing he's been quarantined twice since returning to campus on June 1, and noting he watched his mother "fight for her life" on a ventilator last year during the birth of his sister. "This has really hit home for me and my family being quarantined twice," he wrote. "I wish my university all the best this football season." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Through two games, the Florida State defense knows it isn't living up to expectations. Entering the season, the Seminoles' defense was expected to be the strength of the team led by a number of projected future NFL players. That hasn't been the case, however, as a number of standout individual performances haven't saved a unit that has allowed 477.5 yards per game to opposing offenses so far this season. "As a team, I feel like we just have to go out there and play more physical and with more effort," FSU cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. said. "We didn't play to the Florida State standard effort-wise and physicality-wise. We just have to go out there and basically play with pride." Whatever metric you consider, it has been a tough start to the season for the FSU defense. In two games, FSU's defense has fallen 17 spots in ESPN's SP+ defensive rankings from 33rd to 50th.

FSU hasn't impressed in many defensive categories, but their third-down defense has been especially startling. Even though FSU forced Georgia Tech into an average third-down distance of 8.9 yards and Miami faced an average third-down distance of 5.9 yards, the Seminoles have allowed their first two opponents to convert 59.8% of their third downs. That's the worst mark in the ACC and tied for 65th out of 72 FBS teams that have played this season. "On third downs it really was just missed assignments and guys not winning the 1-on-1. You've got to win your 1-on-1 and know what you are doing," Samuel said. "I feel like if we did those two things, the (Miami) game would have gone a lot more different." - Tallahassee Democrat

  10/02/20 - McKenzie MiltonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-11, 194 (DS#29 QB) + More +

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton took another step in his recovery when he suited up in shoulder pads and participated in a practice Tuesday. While it's still unclear when Milton might be ready to take a snap during a football game, his perseverance and positive attitude throughout the multi-year recovery process has been an inspiration for his teammates and coaches. "McKenzie Milton is like a bright sun on a gloomy day," UCF co-offensive coordinator Alex Golesh said. "KZ is literally the heartbeat of our offense." Milton has spent the past 22 months recovering from a horrific knee injury he suffered during the Knights' 2018 regular-season finale against USF at Raymond James Stadium. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair damaged nerves and restore blood flow to his lower right leg. The injury nearly forced doctors to amputate his leg.

He went through multiple surgeries and countless hours of rehabilitation before getting clearance from his doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota in August to return to practice. "When he started practicing with us, you look over and he's got a smile and balls are zipping everywhere," added Golesh, who joined the UCF coaching staff in December following a stint at Iowa State. "There's a sense of excitement among everyone on the offense. I know for me, seeing him play from afar and now being around him, to see him out there is incredible and humbling in ways because a lot of people said he shouldn't be out there or couldn't be out there. "It's a credit to him on his perseverance and drive to be able to get back." - Orlando Sentinel

The Tigers have gone to a jumbo package near the goal line to mix things up in recent years, but Clemson could call upon Uiagalelei - a quarterback - for a different look in 2020. Handing the ball to Etienne or letting Trevor Lawrence throw or run are great options at the goal line, but Uiagalelei's size makes him unique. The 250-pound freshman QB rushed for a pair of touchdowns on Saturday, and Swinney hinted that we could see Uiagalelei called upon near the goal line during closer games in the future. "I'd say anything is possible," Swinney said. "He's 250 pounds. He's a big, strong man. But anything is possible, that's for sure." - The State

As the top-ranked pro-style quarterback for the class of 2020, five-star prospect D.J. Uiagalelei had plenty of options in regards to where he would play college football. They included most of the top programs in the country, such as Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and Clemson. The California native could have gone to a place where he would have had a good shot of earning the starting QB job as a true freshman. Instead, Uiagalelei did the opposite, going to a place where he knew he would have to wait his turn, barring an injury. But Uiagalelei views the chance to play behind Trevor Lawrence as a blessing and not a hindrance.

The 6-foot-4, 250 pounder is learning everything he can from Lawrence in their one season together, before Lawrence leaves for the NFL. "For me, if there was a quarterback like Trevor, coming here and being able to learn from him, that's a bigger accomplishment than going into a place and starting Day 1," Uiagalelei said. "I'm right behind the best quarterback in the country and the best player. For me, I get to pick his brain and see how he does it and just learn from him." Uiagalelei compares his situation now to the one Aaron Rodgers was in when the Packers quarterback was playing behind Brett Favre early in his NFL career. - The State

It would seem that Florida State defensive end Joshua Kaindoh's injury in the Seminoles' season opener Saturday was not as bad as it looked. Kaindoh, a redshirt junior from Baltimore, Md., left the Seminoles' 16-13 loss to Georgia Tech in the second quarter after he was on the receiving end of an illegal chop block penalty when a GT player dove and took out his knee. Kaindoh was evaluated in the injury tent, but never went back to the FSU locker room for further evaluation. He remained on the sideline for the rest of the game, never returning to action. FSU coach Mike Norvell shared a positive update on Kaindoh Monday, although he didn't disclose what injury he suffered. "I would say there's a positive prognosis on Kaindoh. That's something that we're going to continue to evaluate here day-to-day in the next week or so," Norvell said. "That is one of the things about having an extra week, it can kind of allow for guys to get a little extra time to heal up." The timing of FSU's bye week ahead of the Seminoles' next game Sept. 26 at Miami means Kaindoh will have two full weeks to get back to full health. - Times Union

UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton has made tremendous strides as he continues his rehabilitation from a catastrophic knee injury that nearly cost him his leg in 2018. While most people associated with the Knights football program believe Milton's return to the football field is inevitable, don't expect it to happen soon. UCF coach Josh Heupel ruled out Milton for the season opener against Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta and the foreseeable future. "McKenzie won't play in this football game here and realistically the first couple weeks of the season," Heupel said. "He's continuing to do more and more out at practice. His heath is continuing to get better. He's throwing with our guys and moving around the pocket and doing those types of things. I think he's getting more and more comfortable."

Milton's spent the past 22 months recovering from a horrific knee injury he suffered during the Knights' 2018 regular-season finale against USF at Raymond James Stadium. He had emergency surgery at Tampa General Hospital to repair damaged nerves and restore blood flow to his lower right leg. The injury nearly forced doctors to amputate his leg. He was in a wheelchair or on crutches for the first five months following the surgery and it wasn't until earlier this year that doctors cleared him to ditch a restrictive brace for a less bulky one that allowed him to increase his physical activities. - Orlando Sentinel

A woebegone Andrew Parchment spent part of his Sunday morning fielding uncomfortable questions, staring ahead at a row of assembled media at a virtual postgame news conference. As it quickly became apparent, however, the only thing the standout Kansas wide receiver wanted to look into was a mirror. "I would grade my performance," Parchment said, "as an F." Perhaps the most telling aspect of the senior's harsh self-evaluation? It was entirely unprompted. Parchment hauled in six receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown in the Jayhawks' 38-23 defeat to Coastal Carolina late Saturday night inside an empty David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. That line is nothing to be ashamed of, to be certain, but after the final whistle, Parchment was only interested in discussing his mistakes.

That was particularly true when, in the second question of the scrum, Parchment was asked to grade the performance of the team's quarterbacks, an inquiry that prompted the preseason All-Big 12 first-teamer's self-critical response. Did the question get lost in digital translation? It begged a more direct follow-up: What did Parchment think of the way KU quarterbacks Thomas MacVittie, Miles Kendrick and Jalon Daniels played in the opener? "I would grade my performance as an F," Parchment reiterated. - Topeka Capital journal
