Oklahoma, the No. 3 team in the poll, received the other two votes for first. Coastal Carolina, coming off its best season in program history, is ranked 24th. The Tigers' appearance at No. 2 marks the sixth consecutive season they have debuted in the top 5, and they have been in the top 2 in five out of the last six seasons. This is Clemson's third debut at No. 2 in Along with Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Ohio State, the top 5 was rounded out by Georgia, officially making the Tigers and Bulldogs' Week 1 matchup in Charlotte, N.C., a battle of top 5 teams. - Charleston Post Courier

Jermaine Johnson, a productive edge rusher for UGA, put his name in the transfer portal last December because he thought he could make even more plays somewhere else if given a chance for increased playing time. "It was kind of crazy," Johnson said of the many options presented. "I didn't know where I was going to go. It was kind of stressful. It was like a recruiting aspect, but you didn't have months to deal with it. I had to do it in like under a month." The place he landed at turned out to be Florida State. Seminoles coach Mike Novell didn't know Johnson, who took advantage of the NCAA's extra year of eligibility after his senior year at Georgia. He found out a lot about him by speaking to UGA defensive coordinator Dan Lanning, who worked under Norvell at Memphis.

Johnson and Norvell quickly bonded during their time in Tallahassee this offseason. Johnson was selected as one of three Seminoles brought to the ACC Kickoff event last month in Charlotte, N.C. "He believed in the man I am, the man I can be and also the player I am and the player I could be," Johnson said. Johnson was asked by a reporter who covers Miami about another former Georgia players, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, who transferred to play for the Hurricanes. "Tyrique's invaluable, he's a great player," Johnson said. "I saw how great a player he was and can when he came to Georgia. I talk to him every once in a while. He's very happy at Miami right now. He wouldn't want to be any place else." - Athens Daily Banner

Clemson sophomore quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei is a 2021 Heisman Trophy candidate because of performances in two strong starts when veteran star Trevor Lawrence was out with COVID-19 in 2020. The Southern Californian is also a quick study off the field. That was evident at the ACC Football Kickoff on July 22 when Uiagalelei was asked about his new Name, Image and Likeness deal with Bojangles. "California, we don't have Bojangles down there," Uiagalelei said during a press conference at the Westin Charlotte. "I remember one thing coming down here to the South, one thing I definitely learned is Jesus is No. 1 here. Then it goes football and then it's people love Bojangles."

Uiagalelei and North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell have signed deals with Bojangles under the NCAA's new Name, Image and Likeness policy allowing players to cash in on endorsement deals. Bojangles, a fast-food company specializing in fried chicken and other Southern favorites, is based in Charlotte. Uigalelei was asked during the press conference if he might parlay his "Big Cinco" nickname tied to his jersey No. 5 into a $5 Bojangles meal deal. "That would definitely work," Uiagalelei said. "I'll have to talk to Bojangles about that." - Charleston Post Courier

  07/25/21 - McKenzie MiltonrSr/2022, Florida State, 5-11, 194 (DS#29 QB) + More +

McKenzie Milton isn't afraid of sharing the limelight with fellow Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis. In fact, he's more than willing to push him toward it. Ever since Milton's arrival in Tallahassee in December, the graduate transfer has been working hard to fit into his new surroundings. That includes providing the right amount of give-and-take from his younger teammates in the Seminoles quarterback room. "I'm a shy guy who likes to stay to himself but he's forced me to get out a little bit more," Travis explained. "For example, we had a meeting about a month ago and he had me hop up in front of the team with the [video] clicker and go through plays. "That's not me but I'm thankful to have him push me out of my comfort zone because that's what I need."

Milton's arrival at FSU raised a few eyebrows and fueled speculation that if the Hawaii native was 100% healthy, he would be the favorite to start the season for the Seminoles. But FSU coach Mike Norvell isn't willing to commit to either player, going as far as to bring both to this week's ACC football kickoff event in Charlotte. "I'm grateful for both of those guys because they're both tremendous players, tremendous leaders and they make an incredible impact on our football team each and every day," said Norvell. "The thing I'm excited about is the work that they put in this summer. - Orlando Sentinel

After the NCAA set its interim name, image and likeness policy on July 1, some college student-athletes immediately signed deals. Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei waited. Instead, he first signed an agent, VaynerSports. Less than a month later, Bojangles welcomed Uiagalelei to its team. Both he and North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell signed deals with the chicken franchise, announced on Wednesday. "College football is a huge passion point for Bojangles and our fans, so we are excited to be able to work with the athletes that make this sport so great," said Jackie Woodward, chief brand and marketing officer for Bojangles, via a press release. "These local stars have enjoyed our delicious food to fuel their athletic careers, and we're thrilled to officially be part of their journey."

Uiagalelei confirmed the news with a 25-second Instagram video that featured Tigers offensive linemen Ryan Linthicum and Walker Parkers. The three are seated at a table sharing a meal with Parks feasting on what appears to be a chicken sandwich while Uiagalelei is pouring himself a cup of sweet tea. Before taking a sip, the sophomore quarterback compliments the company's consistency in the quality of food. "I'm excited to be one of the first college athletes to say 'It's Bo Time!'" Uiagalelei wrote in the caption. - The State

Florida State opens its fall football camp with the team set to report on Friday, Aug. 6 according to the school. The Seminoles hit the field for the first practice of the 2021 season on Saturday, Aug. 7. FSU is looking to put a dismal 2020 campaign behind them, one that saw the team finish with a 3-6 record. It was the worst season since 1975 when the team finished 3-8. The next season, Bobby Bowden was hired and he spent the next 34 seasons retooling the program into a football powerhouse.

Since Jimbo Fisher's departure in 2017, the program has suffered through two head coaching hires and three straight losing seasons. Mike Norvell, who was hired in 2020, returns for his second season. The team struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic, failing to host spring or summer camps and losing several games to positive testing thresholds. Coupled with a young and inexperienced roster led to a disappointing showing in Norvell's first season in Tallahassee. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State quarterback McKenzie Milton and linebacker Amari Gainer earned spots on the Maxwell and Bednarik award watch lists released Monday. The award is given annually to the best college football player in the country. Milton led UCF to a 27-6 record during his time as the starting quarterback for the Knights, including back-to-back American Athletic Conference Championship titles and consecutive appearances in New Year's Six Access Bowl games in 2017-18. - Orlando Sentinel

Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei announced Friday that he has signed with VaynerSports. Uiagalelei's news comes a day after the NCAA's new interim name, image and likeness policy went into effect. There are seven known Clemson athletes who have announced NIL deals since then. Instead of signing a deal himself, however, the Tigers' starting quarterback opted to hire an agency, which is also covered in Clemson's NIL policies, released Wednesday night. VaynerSports is a branch of Vayner Media, a social and digital agency started by Gary Vaynerchuk and AJ Vaynerchuk in 2009.

The company expanded and launched VaynerSports in 2016 "to create an offering that featured great contract advisory, superior service, innovative marketing (and) endorsements, and mentorship in the world of business, branding, social media, investing (and) sports," according to its website. VaynerSports represents athletes like Leonard Williams of the New York Giants as well as South Carolina native and NFL free agent Alshon Jeffery and the LA Dodgers' Justin Turner. - The State

Florida State placed four players on Phil Steele's preseason All-ACC team. Defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who transferred from Georgia in the offseason, led the way with a third-team selection followed by running back Jashaun Corbin, offensive tackle Devontay Love-Taylor, linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. and defensive back Jammie Robinson, who were all fourth-team picks. Corbin finished second on the team in rushing with 401 yards and five touchdowns in his first season with the Seminoles after transferring in from Texas A&M. Love-Taylor appeared in seven games for FSU before suffering a season-ending injury. Dix played in all nine games last season as a true freshman, starting the final five games and finishing third on the team in tackles (45). Robinson appeared in 22 games at South Carolina before transferring to FSU this offseason. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State will open the 2021-22 college football season with a prime-time matchup against Notre Dame in front of a nationally televised audience. The Seminoles are set to host the Fighting Irish in Doak Campbell Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. with the game set to air on ABC. It's the fourth time both programs have met in Tallahassee in the short 10-game series and the first since 2014.   The Clemson-Georgia football game scheduled for Sept. 4 will kick off at 7:30 p.m., ESPN announced. The game will air on ABC. The ACC/SEC showdown will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The matchup represents the start of a six-game series the programs will play over the next 14 years. Coach Dabo Swinney's team enters the season as a national title contender after earning its sixth straight College Football Playoff bid last season. The Tigers lost star quarterback Trevor Lawrence to the NFL, but believe sophomore signal caller D.J. Uiagalelei can help to fill the void.   Andrew Parchment grew up playing football in South Florida so it only made sense he would develop an affinity for the Miami Hurricanes. But even as a young 'Canes fan, Parchment had a mutual reverence for rival Florida State. "If you watch college football and you don't know about Florida State and their history, you must be living underneath a rock," Parchment explained. "Even though I grew up a Miami fan, I understood what the history of Florida State is and I understand that through the players that came through here." Parchment hopes to make his mark in the program's storied history, joining the Seminoles program as a graduate transfer.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound wide receiver becomes the latest player to find a new home at FSU. He becomes the 10th player to join the Seminoles program after a brief stint in the transfer portal following brief stints at Northern Illinois, Iowa Central Community College and Kansas. "For me, it was crazy that a school like Florida State would be interested in me and I was excited not only to stay in a Power Five conference but to come back to the state of Florida," said Parchment, a 3-star prospect out of Cypress Bay High School in Fort Lauderdale. - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State reached into the transfer portal to add some much-needed depth and experience to its 2021-22 football roster with the addition of receiver Andrew Parchment and offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons. Parchment, a graduate transfer, comes by way of Kansas where he spent the past two seasons. He appeared in 20 games with 19 starts for the Jayhawks, totaling 1,028 yards and nine touchdowns on 89 catches.

"We're extremely excited about Andrew joining our program," said FSU coach Mike Norvell. "We feel like he brings a great playmaking ability and home-run threat to the receiver position. Being from Florida, it's also a great opportunity for him down here as he finishes his college career in front of family and friends as a Seminole." Parchment was a 3-star prospect out of Cypress Bay (Fort Lauderdale), who originally signed with Northern Illinois in 2017 where he played one season for the Huskies before landing at Iowa Central Community College and then Kansas. - Orlando Sentinel
